Karl Lagerfeld thinks Coco Chanel would have “hated” his work

By Andrea Petrou on October 17th, 2011

Karl Lagerfeld thinks Coco Chanel would have “hated” his work.

The flamboyant designer – who is creative director at both Fendi and Chanel – believes he has done well at the fashion house because he was given total freedom, though he doesn’t think the label’s founder would have approved of his creations.

Asked how he copes with his workload, Karl said: “I have it in my blood. When I was asked to Chanel, it was not trendy. I made something of it because I was given total freedom by the owner. What I do Coco would have hated. It’s my job to keep Chanel updated.”

Karl also admitted he often forgets work he has done in the past, but is not upset by this as he thinks it has helped with his career.

Discussing his many collaborations – including work with Coca Cola, Macy’s and Magnum – he told CNN: “I’m a walking label no? My name is Labelfeld not Lagerfeld. I have a sort of Alzheimer’s for my own work, which I think is a very good thing. Today too many people remember what they did – just forget it all and start again.”

Designer spotlight: Chanel through the ages

By Andrea Petrou on April 6th, 2011

We couldn’t do a designer spotlight series without including Chanel, after all this iconic fashion house has bought us a great deal of style joy over the past century.
The design house was the first to bring chic elegance into the mainstream and combine different fabrics including fur, tweeds and on-trend hats.

And this is really what attracted celebrities right through the 50s and 60s to now to wear them. Under Karl Lagerfeld’s current designs, Chanel has become alot more funky – think mini dresses, luxe fabrics and tiered styles, yet that elegance still remains. Fans now include the likes of Lily Allen, Emma Watson and Sarah Jessica Parker, just to name a few.

See the gallery below for styles ranging all the way back to the early 1900s to today, as well as celebrity fans.

Keira Knightley prefers “masculine” perfumes.

By Andrea Petrou on March 22nd, 2011

Keira Knightley prefers “masculine” perfumes.

The ‘Atonement’ actress is the face of Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle perfume and admitted before she tried it she only wore men’s fragrances because she hates sweet scents.

She explained: “Before Coco Mademoiselle I wore men’s fragrances. I didn’t want something light and flowery – I’m not that kind of girl.

“It’s the first perfume I tried and thought, ‘Yes, that fits.’ It’s the mixture of strength and subtlety. It doesn’t overpower but it makes you feel you can stand up straight and that’s important to me.

“One of the things I love about it is that although it’s extremely feminine, it gives me this feeling of power.”

Keira also revealed she loved the beige catsuit she wears in the new commercial for the brand, which is directed by Joe Wright admitting it made her feel like “superwoman”.

She told The Daily Record newspaper: “All I knew before I saw it was that it was a beige catsuit. I didn’t have any details. I discovered it in Karl Lagerfeld’s offices once it was done and when I put it on, I immediately felt like I was slipping into a second skin. I felt like superwoman.”

ShinyStyle first looks: Chanel Coco Cocoon collection with Vanessa Paradis

By Andrea Petrou on May 17th, 2010

On Friday we here at ShinyStyle were lucky enough to get a sneak preview of Chanel‘s latest Coco Cocoon bag collection, which hit stores over the weekend.

The famous range, which this year comprises of the signature padded style we’ve all grown to love, has been updated with furs, different colour linings and of course a new face. Gone is Lily Allen and in her place comes Vanessa Paradis.

The model and actress is of course no stranger to the brand. In 2004 Karl Lagerfeld appointed her as the ambassadress of the “Ligne Cambon” handbags. The following year, the designer asked her to pose again, this time for the “New Mademoiselle” bags.
And now she’s been picked for the “Coco Cocoon” handbags line.

View the gallery for a few of the new styles and Vanessa’s ad campaign.

Friday fun: Lady Gaga finger puppets

By Andrea Petrou on April 30th, 2010

Want to have Lady Gaga wrapped around your finger? Or would you prefer her under your thumb? If the answer to any of these is yes, then you’re in luck.

A clever designer, Mullish Muse, over at craft and designer auction site Etsy has created a range of finger puppets based on celebrities and there’s one of Miss G to be had. We love these tiny felt dolls, which really are a fantastic likeness to the kooky singer, considering how small they are.

And if you don’t want the Lady then there are also a range of other puppets including Bono and fashion icons Anna Wintour, Vivienne Westwood and Coco Chanel. Put them together and have a mini puppet celebrity party.

We wonder what Anna Wintour would say about Lady Gaga’s style though?
