These brilliant purple high-waisted slacks are sporty, sexy and on-trend. You can find them at American Apparel.

Fashion Week is long gone now, but spring is on the way – there’s no better way to celebrate that than with a graphic explosion of colour, as seen at Jil Sander (pictured). The fashion house’s long eye-popping column skirts, teamed with fluorescent lipstick and beautifully cut plain white tee-shirts, has become one of the most referenced catwalk collections of the year. Beautifully simple, youthful and fun, this is one trend we can get behind.

It’s so easy as a lover of the high street to fall into the trap of black, black, black. Little black dresses, black heels, black everything. Very classic, yes, and a bit Chanel, but – whisper it – a tiny bit boring. If you’re not interested in vampy dramatic black clothing or ballerina-esque neutrals, then this might be a trend that you want to try out.

It’s a trend that might be tricky to nail if you’re new to experimenting with colour – believe me, I know I definitely am – but the key to this look is to keep things simple. For full-on eye-popping fashion choose a statement piece in a vivid colour, such as a maxi skirt or pair of tailored trousers, and team it up with simple accessories and a clean white shirt for a look that’s both youthful and modern. Or, if you’re feeling a bit too timid to meet the trend head-on, give a nod to the look with a fluorescent handbag or pair of heels. River Island is fantastic for bright shoes – check out their “Fashion Fix” section for a selection of eye-popping shoes.

Also high on our colour-popping hit list is American Apparel. It may seem an obvious choice, but you really need to look no further for a wide range of sexy, youthful basics in eye-wateringly bright colours. We love their twill slacks in bright purple.

Designers donning all black outfits. Stereotype or colour conspiracy?

By alanamcverry on April 21st, 2010

chantal.jpgI live in East London. I see a lot of people who ‘do’ fashion stuff. I come across a lot of people who do, or who plan to, design clothes. And one thing I have noticed, no matter how much they tell us purple is the new black this season, for them black has never been, and will never be replaced by anything. I came across this photo of Chantal Thomass, Parisian designer, on a sunny day in almost May, head to toe, clad in all black. A vacuum of colour and pattern, come on Chantal, is this not just too much of a cliché? In fact many fashionista attended parties I have stumbled on accidentally have been much dominated by the same fascination with absence rather than presence of pigment. If fashion design, like any good design, is about pushing boundaries, creating something new and exciting and avoiding the obvious, then should one not practice what they preach?
Now, I wear a lot of black, in fact if I was allowed to call it a colour, it would be a favourite, but my relation to fashion is much more of a reactionary one. I do not give birth to the haute couture babies that propagate and morph into the wearable high street fashion. It is not my initial actions that fuel self imposed irrational imperatives to be on trend with these seasons shades. So, is it all just a sneaky way of making us buy more clothes? If the new black was always black, seasons could go by and no fashion updates would need to be purchased. Or maybe they simply only like colour as a concept rather than a reality. Either way, I’ve always said, I would never get my hair cut by someone with a mullet. And similarly, I aint buying colour from someone who doesn’t know how to make it look good.

New York Fashion Week: Matthew Williamson Fall 2009 Gallery

By Kimberley Foster on February 17th, 2009

Blogged by our sister site, Catwalk Queen

Many were thanking Matthew Williamson today who, besides Marc Jacobs, gave us a break from the safeness of black and clumpy clothes with a burst of multi-color print and texture. As part of Team British Invasion, Williamson dazzled crowds with a mixture of shimmery beads, zigzag knits, ruffled cocktail dresses, skinny leather trousers, fur-trimmed shaped coats and sequinned gowns. A nod to his Pucci days came in the form of geometric-shaped prints, which featured in everything from column dresses to shiny suits, and worn with zebra cut-out ankle sandals. Although he did get a little carried away at times, overall I can see how many (especially New Yorkers) might flock to this collection for a touch of uptown society style.
