Short and sweet: the best shorts and playsuits on the high street

By laurenbravo on March 20th, 2010

Shorts get a bad press. Despite a resurgence last year, lots of us still harbour deep-seated (or shallow-seated, depending on how high waisted you choose to go) fears about getting our pins out in a pair. Go too tight and you look like Daisy Duke, too long and you look like a lady explorer, too short and you’re veering into dangerous street-corner territory…

But done right, shorts will be a wardrobe winner this year. The spring/summer catwalks were a veritable leg parade, with everybody from Stella McCartney to Balmain showcasing shorts for all occasions. At Chloe they were high-waisted leather, at Marc by Marc Jacobs they were vintage-inspired satin hotpants, while Cynthia Rowley and Fendi both showed loose, tailored ‘tap pant’ styles reminiscent of a ’30s schoolboy on a boating holiday. There were city shorts, beachy shorts and countless knickerbocker styles to choose from.

On the high street, meanwhile, shorts are sneaking onto the radar by pretending to be skirts, in an array of cutsey prints and sorbet shades. For the most flattering approach, try teaming a high-waisted, mid-thigh pair with opaque tights, a simple vest, boyfriend blazer and chunky heels. We’re also gleefully welcoming back last summer’s staple, the playsuit. Opt for muted colours and fitted shapes for a look that’s more pin-up, less Playdays presenter.

Here’s a round-up of our favourites for your delectation. Go shorty…

New York Fashion Week: Cynthia Rowley Fall 2009

By Andrea Thatcher on February 15th, 2009

This is a lot like trying to get to your seat during fashion week. In an effort to “be more inclusive” Cynthia Rowley created a video showcasing her Fall 2009 collection that’s currently showing on her Web site, Taxi TV in New York City (yes, you watch it while riding around to the shows) and above. Produced by independent film makers Red Bucket Films and featuring indie band the Beets, It’s a cute presentation of a predictable collection that will appeal to Rowley fans. And, do we spy Make Me A Supermodel winner Holly Kiser also winning the round of musical chairs?

Designer Cynthia Rowley recently accepted Marymount University’s Designer of the Year award, and encouraged the young design students there as she did so.

“If I can do it, you can do it,” Rowley said. “There’s no formula, no rules, you have to create your own world and your own career.”

Puffy handbags are in

By Elaine LaPersonerie on September 7th, 2007

Texture is in this fall and, if you’ve noticed, there seems to be a lot of puff. From Chanel to Miu Miu to Louis Vitton to Cynthia Rowley, everyone seems to be into this quilted look. Net-A-Porter is showing this black leather Marc Jacobs Mayfair shoulder bag with gold hardware and a chunky chain link strap. I think it’s really classy, but for $895 I’m not sure it’s worth it. But with some quick internet surfing I found a similar bag at Fashion Flaire for $49.99. It’s not leather, but so what–it’s so hard to notice the faux half the time, anyway! Plus with the number of bag peddlers on NYC streets, everyone in the world is carrying a faux something! So, if you can’t swing for the pricier styles–look for something similar before you break the bank.
