Philip Green hired by the Government to help identify potential savings

By admin on August 13th, 2010

Their wives may wear his Topshop clothing line, but now it seems politicians also want a piece of Topshop mogul Philip Green.

The Arcadia boss has been hired by Prime Minister David Cameron to conduct an efficiency review into the government’s annual spending bill over the next three years.

He will work with the government free of charge to set out to cut inefficiencies and identify potential savings.

Green told the Guardian: “I believe that our shared experience in the procurement of many goods and services, across a broad geographical area of the UK will enable us to have important benchmarked information which will be extremely useful.

“I will give this efficiency review my very best effort knowing how hugely important it is to the recovery of the country. I want to help focus, motivate and energise to achieve these efficiency savings. It is these actions that will restart growth in the UK.”

Green will report his findings to the minister of the Cabinet Office Francis Maude and chief secretary to the treasury Danny Alexander in October.

We wonder if we’ll be spotting any of these politicians in Topshop or Burton suits in the future.

Have your say: Should Primark be criticised for selling padded bikinis for 7 year olds?

By Andrea Petrou on April 15th, 2010

Primark.jpg
A few weeks ago Katie Price came under our Shinystyle spotlight for announcing that she was thinking of creating a range of make-up for children and judging by your votes many of you agreed that it was encouraging children to grow up too quickly.

And it seems she’s not the only one accused of encouraging this. Primark this week has come under fire from MPs and parenting charities after its decision to sell padded bikinis for 7 year olds.

David Cameron joined Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Mumsnet kicked off at the store, which has since removed the £4 range from shelves.

Following complaints Primark issued a statement claiming: The company has stopped the sale of this product line with immediate effect. Primark will donate all the profits made from this product line to a children’s charity, and apologises to customers for any offence caused.’

But it doesn’t look as though the chain will be getting off that easily as yesterday politicians were still furious

Mr Cameron said yesterday: ‘There is a classic example today where Primark are apparently pushing padded bras on seven-year-olds, which I think is completely disgraceful.

‘The sort of country I want is one where it is not just the Government that feels outraged about the early commercialisation and sexualisation of our children, but companies should stop doing it, they should take some responsibility,’ he added.

Do you think Primark behaved immorally by selling these bikinis or do you think it’s just a lot of fuss over nothing. Vote and leave your comments below and let us know.

Samantha Cameron steps out in M&S

By Andrea Petrou on October 9th, 2009

Sam one.jpgPolitician’s wives are fast becoming a popular topic of conversation in the fashion world as they move into the limelight.

We’ve analysed many a politician’s wife in the past from Michelle Obama to Cherie Blair and now we’ve turned our attention to Conservative leader David Cameron’s missus Samantha.

At the Tory Conference today, where her husband tackled the difficult issue of the national debt, his supportive wife stepped out in a £65 Marks & Spencer dress and Zara heels. This is a far cry from the £600 Erdem dress and £300 Jimmy Choo heels she wore to introduce her husband at the Labour Party Conference.

We love the polka dot style look of this outfit, which we think shows a solidarity to us women, who have depended on the high street in these current times.

But we want to know what you think. Do you like this look and do you see Mrs Cameron replacing Michelle Obama in the fashion stakes? Or do you think politician’s wives are still looking as dowdy as ever?

Apart from, of course, Nicholas Sarkozy’s wife Carla Bruni who looks stunning in everything she wears, but we have to remember she did have head start being top model.
