Designer pick of the week: Yuki

By Andrea Petrou on September 22nd, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

If you’re looking for a few classic staples that you can wear both to work and out on the town this A/W, you don’t need to look any further than R-T-W designer Yuki, whose clothes take direct inspiration from Tokyo’s Shibuya Street and Japanese street style.

The current collection, which is for sale on various online designer boutiques such as Bunnyhug.com, are mainly comprised of classic tailored shirts that could be worn to the office or to a club, depending on how they’re styled. It’s a palette of rust, camel, neutrals and classic whites that have been seen all over the catwalks this season – but instead of spending a bomb on a blouse from Chloe, Yuki retails at high-street prices. I’m currently lusting over the rust-coloured shirt with diamanté detailing on the pockets and the preppy “unbalanced” shirt in cream.

You may think that Yuki has been somewhat below the fashion radar but not so – the brand has been slowly and surely getting love from the media world and celebrities such as Sienna Miller and Peaches Geldof are fans. Check the gallery below for some of their sharp designs.

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on October 28th, 2008

High End POTW.jpg

We’re not sure whose caviar dreams include spending $1,000 plus on a Halloween get-up, but at least this one is fabulous and has a life outside a closet full of slutty Disney princess costumes.

The Luella Penelope Ribbon Dress, $1,130, is darkly gothic and fashionably sexy.

It also requires some creativity on your part. Sure, you could be a witch, or you could be a dark fairy, a dead socialite? Tell us your stylishly spooky ideas in the comments!

Designer Pick of the Week: Calvin Klein Collection satin dress

By Andrea Thatcher on June 3rd, 2008

Designer POTW CK.jpg

In honor of Francisco Costa’s win for womenswear with his Calvin Klein Collection at the CFDA awards, we chose a dress from his spring 2008 collection for our designer pick of the week.

While most of the collection was comprised of whites and neutrals, we really loved the blue-greens that Costa wove throughout the presentation – like this spectra satin organza strapless dress.

The color really popped and is the perfect thing for spring and summer. It’s easy to go to blues and reds to compliment your whites, but if you’re feeling more fashion and less yankee doodle, teal and sea blue shades are perfect.

Designer Pick of the Week: Christian Louboutin satin slingback

By Andrea Thatcher on February 19th, 2008

DPOTW%20Louboutin.jpg

When searching for a designer pick of the week, Bergdorf Goodman’s selection of spring Christian Louboutins seemed like a great place to look.

And it was. We discovered these satin slingbacks, $795, in the perfect shade of bright green for spring. Then think how well they’d double for Christmas finery next winter with a little black dress!

Assymetry is big, and bows are bigger, so this stylish shoe is sure to please trendsetters while also appealing to the more classic consumer.

If that price tag is a little rich for your blood, be sure to check in every Thursday for our Bargain Pick of the Week selections.

Designer Pick of the Week: Donna Karan satin balloon skirt on sale

By Andrea Thatcher on January 22nd, 2008

Donna%20Karan%20balloon%20skirt.jpg

With the volume seen at Christian Dior, it’s clear that balloon skirts aren’t going away quite yet. To the contrary they may be getting bigger – in size and importance!

We’ll have to wait for the rest of the upcoming shows to find out, but if you’re willing to take a gamble on a fabulous deal then there’s this Donna Karan Collection satin balloon skirt to consider.

The skirt is one of many great finds in the Bergdorf Goodman sale featuring up to 70% off top designers. This piece was originally $1,495 and is now down to $583. The pleats and texture are simply sophisticated while making a big style statement.

Designer pick of the week: Randolph Duke

By Andrea Thatcher on October 30th, 2007

After a seven-year hiatus from the catwalk, Randolph Duke sent a “Glamorganic” eco-friendly collection down the runway during Los Angeles Fashion Week. The clothing, inspired by jungle foliage, was a mixture of gowns and sleek suits. The collection earned Duke his first-ever standing ovation, and will certainly not be leading to any more hiatuses anytime soon.

Designer pick of the week: Stella McCartney

By Andrea Thatcher on October 23rd, 2007

Known for her ethically conscious clothing and celebrity friendships as much as for being the daughter of Beatle Paul, Stella McCartney’s clothing is feminine with an attention to detail. This beaded mini dress is one fine example of McCartney’s craftsmanship. The racer-back taupe sleeveless dress is made from silk and covered in dome metal beads. It retails for $4,145 at net-a-porter.com.

Designer pick of the week: Stella McCartney

By Andrea Thatcher on October 16th, 2007

At Paris Fashion Week, Stella McCartney showed her spring/summer collection. Full of easygoing flowing dresses in wildflower prints inspired by the ’70s, the models looked like the cast of the musical “Hair.” Her trademark jumpsuits also made an appearance, as well as pajama- and nightgown-inspired garments. The looks would be equally appropriate for an afternoon in the park or a Sunday lounging around in bed. The look above, worn by model Jessica Stam, is the epitome of the perfect spring frock.

Designer pick of the week: Zac Posen

By Andrea Thatcher on September 25th, 2007

Zac Posen has been the “it boy” of the fashion world since making his runway debut at the Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion show in 2001. This blue gown stood out even amidst numbers of other show-stopping dresses. Even among turquoise pleats, ruffles, and layers, the dress showed off model Liya Kebede’s fantastic body and reminded one of the rippling Mediterranean Sea, a perfect inspiration for summer.

Desinger POTW: Patent leather cropped city jacket by 3.1 Phillip Lim

By Andrea Thatcher on July 24th, 2007

Phillip%20lim%20runway.jpg

Take this look straight from the runway! A cropped, black leather jacket is a style staple, and the patent leather finish on this version from 3.1 Phillip Lim keeps the too cool topper modern. Which makes it a perfect Designer Pick of the Week.

Phillip%20lim%20jacket.jpg

While La Garconne, who sells the jacket for $794, recommends pairing the piece with dresses or jeans for work or play, we think this would make a great signature item. If it suits your frame – long and lean or evenly proportioned – or if you want to minimize a larger-on-top figure, wear it with everything!
