Christopher Kane designs a range of black cabs for Vodafone.

By Andrea Petrou on May 24th, 2011

Christopher Kane has designed a range of black cabs for Vodafone.

The British designer has combined the Union Jack flag with the signature celestial prints from his Spring/Summer Resort 2011 collection to create a unique makeover for the 100 taxis which took to the streets yesterday and are fitted with mobile phone chargers and a new system enabling customers to pay by text message.

Christopher said: “The black cab is such an iconic part of London’s landscape. I am honoured to have the opportunity to put my own distinctive stamp on it. Looking forward to seeing one on the street and hailing it down!”

Vodafone Director of Brand Marketing, Danielle Crook, added: “Christopher Kane was the perfect choice for this design partnership as he always pushes the boundaries to produce eye popping couture that will be sought after worldwide. These new Vodafone cabs ensure Londoners can always stay in touch with friends and family on the go, whilst also bringing a touch of high fashion to the streets of London.”

Christopher – who was previously named as the winner of the British Fashion Council/Vogue Fashion Fund – is no stranger to unusual works, revealing his London Fashion Week show in February was inspired by lollipops and pencils cases.

He said: “This will be known as ‘The liquid collection.’ It was inspired by the pencil cases I had at school and lollipops. But we didn’t want it to be over elaborate – we wanted it to be about really wearable, sophisticated clothes.

“It’s more minimal than anything I’ve done before. But it’s time for a change. No more lace or any of that. I didn’t want any decoration.”

Mel C says Victoria Beckham has “broken down a lot of barriers” in the fashion world

By Andrea Petrou on May 17th, 2011

Mel C says Victoria Beckham has “broken down a lot of barriers” in the fashion world.

The singer says she’s very proud of how much her former Spice Girls bandmate has achieved with her self-titled fashion label and was impressed with how well the dresses fitted when she wore two for a recent awards ceremony.

She told You magazine: “When I was up for the Olivier Awards, I called Victoria and asked if I could borrow one of her designs. She sent these gorgeous gowns over right away. I wore two that night; one for performing, and one for the ceremony, and they made me feel amazing, really pulled me in in all the right places. Victoria has broken down a lot of barriers to get where she has in fashion, to earn respect, and she works really hard.”

Mel also revealed how she is more comfortable with her body now she is a mother to two-year-old daughter Scarlet.

She said: “It used to keep my awake at night if I’d eaten something I shouldn’t have. I used to think that if anyone found out I would be mortified. Now I’ve come to terms with my problems and conquered them, I can talk about it.

“I feel, after Scarlet, that I am completely cured of that. You never know what’s around the corner, but I feel I have a very healthy attitude towards food and exercise and beauty and I haven’t had Botox or anything. I’m not saying I won’t in the future, but having my little girl has made me really quite relaxed about my physical self because she’s just mellowed me.”

Ralph Lauren designs his clothes for “functionality”

By Andrea Petrou on April 15th, 2011

Ralph Lauren makes sure all his designs are “functional”.

The designer says every item in his fashion empire follow a certain trend and says he is often inspired by cars because they are practical yet stylish.

Talking about his new Ralph Lauren Sporting watch, he said: “I’m inspired by functional things, things that are there for a purpose instead of there for decoration. This is a classical, beautiful watch that has never been done before, never seen any kind of influence but my influence.”

Ralph says one of the reasons he started deigning watches was because he knows how much they mean to people and are classic pieces.

He told Britain’s The Times newspaper: “I was never someone who goes all over the world collecting watches. I have likes. Over the years looking for certain things I got to love certain watches, and it doesn’t really matter if they are a Rolex or a Cartier, they have a message to me; their aesthetic, the look, the dials, the space. Watches are something that you hold on to because they carry memory. You hand them down.”

She said: “I would love, love, love to be a Bond girl. That’s a goal, isn’t it?”

She told You magazine: “It was always Justin Timberlake. I was obsessed with him. I watched him in ‘The Social Network’ and it was reignited – ‘I want to marry you!’ ”

The 22-year-old beauty – the daughter of Gavin Rossdale and Pearl Lowe – says her mother has been the biggest influence in her life and she even feels grateful to have been told to get a job while she was still at school.

She added: “My mum is amazing, she’s incredibly creative – I remember her drawing pictures of flowers when I was a child – and she has taught me such a lot. And she was always good at teaching me to be independent. Aged 14 I had a Saturday job in Agent Provocateur on Broadwick Street in London.”

Emma Watson’s new fashion range for Alberta Ferretti inspired by Jane Birkin.

By Andrea Petrou on March 7th, 2011

Emma Watson’s new fashion range for Alberta Ferretti was inspired by Jane Birkin.

The ‘Harry Potter’ actress – who recently released her third and final set of designs for ethical clothing brand People Tree – has worked with the designer on a “green” capsule collection and Alberta revealed 64-year-old actress-and-singer Jane was influential when Emma was working on the eco-friendly designs.

She said: “Emma had a Jane-Birkin-in-the-70s image in mind.”

Alberta also revealed she has admired Emma for some time and is impressed with her dedication to green issues.

She told WWD: “I’m grateful Emma accepted this creative partnership that can contribute to fashion and to the health of the planet.

“She’s an actress I’ve followed since her early days. I like her freshness, her spontaneity and simplicity. She is intelligent, with a strong personality, a young, modern girl of today but aware of social issues at the same time and very rigorous. This is a moment that demands strong attention to these issues and we can help in communicating them.”

Emma – who has worked on five pieces including two dresses, a shirt, a long skirt and a pair of denim shorts for her line called Pure Threads – spoke about her devotion to the ethical clothing cause and said she is delighted that Alberta has gotten involved.

She said: “I’m pleased that a luxury brand such as Alberta Ferretti has decided to create ecological clothes. I believe this is a big step forward for all of the international fashion industry, but also an important step for an increased sensitivity to the problem of ecology.
