There isn’t a more iconic pair of shoes in American history than Dorothy’s ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz.”
And now, the most iconic shoe designers from around the world are going to show us their spin on the ultimate sparkly pumps.

The CFDA is quite proud of the variety in its Fashion Fund finalists this year – with good reason. A green designer (John Patrick of Organic, natch), a milliner (Albertus Quartus – whose design for Proenza Schouler Fall 2007 is shown) and a jewelry designer (Irene Neuwirth) are all included on the short list for the prize.
While the CFDA also touts that two of its finalists are non-New Yorkers, we could only find a few designers who were born or started out in California, none who were based there now.

I still haven’t gotten the hang of the fashion week schedules (I just wait for them to be announced each season) but there’s surely a method to the madness if the Council of Fashion Designers of America is already starting to work out a schedule so that American designers don’t have to show on Labor Day in 2009.
This has prompted Diane von Furstenberg, president of the CFDA, to announce that February’s New York Fashion Week will now take place from February 13 to February 20 (instead of February 6 to February 13), shaking things up early in readiness for the following September.

Even at the celebratory Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards last night, the memory of legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent was not far from the industry’s mind.
Inspired by Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking Suit and one of the night’s winners, Ashley Olsen donned a Calvin Klein resort 09 tuxedo. Naomi Campbell topped that by wearing vintage YSL, and CFDA president Diane Von Furstenberg also wore the symbolic style including a vintage YSL jacket.

One is famous for designing clothes, one is famous for the chic, ethical choices she makes in clothes (oh yeah, and being an A-list actress); but both Diane von Furstenberg and Natalie Portman are trying their hands for the first time at creating full lines of shoes for spring. New pictures of both lines have recently been popping up online.
First up, on the left, is Diane von Furstenberg’s gold Provence heel. The wide, ribbon-like straps are one of my favorite things on evening shoes right now. They seem to take strappy heels to a more modern place.
It seems the designer and president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America is extending the comfortable, sexy aesthetic she’s famous for in her clothing line to the footwear project as well.
“I wanted to create power shoes for the woman on-the-go and on her feet,” von Furstenberg told Fashion Week Daily. “My shoes are not just pretty accessories; they are functional and serve a purpose. Women on-the-go need power, comfort, and fashion.”
More photos of DVF’s line, and Natalie Portman info and images after the jump.

Russian beauty Natalia Vodianova is set to become the face of the spring DVF campaign – the first ad campaign the label has run in a while.
The pictures were shot last week in Manhattan by François-Marie Banier. Both model and photographer then attended the Guggenheim’s annual Young Artist’s Ball on Thursday where she told Fashion Week Daily: “Diane is an amazing and gracious woman, and to work with her was a true pleasure”.
“She’s done a lot for American fashion, and she’s just such a style icon. Plus her clothes feel like second skin,” she added. The duo is pictures above at The Naked Heart Foundation Auction And Cocktail Party in 2004.
The former Calvin Klein model will also appear next spring in promotional video for Louis Vuitton joining a bevy of supermodels including Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Stephanie Seymour. Guess she’s getting those three kiddies’ college funds in order. Except her husband is a real-estate heir and the half-brother of a Viscount. Maybe it’s the free clothes.

Edun designer Rogan Gregory, seen here with Bono and wife Ali Hewson, took home the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award at last night’s 7th on Sale gala. The ethical clothing designer has beaten out tough competition to win the $200,000 prize – like runners up Phillip Lim and jewelry designer Philip Crangi, who each recieved $50,000. Other finalists included Erin Fetherston, who will likely win in her own way with her Target collection, Scott Sternberg of Band of Outsiders, Michael Bastian and Victoria Bartlett of VPL, and Angela Donhauser and Adi Gil of Threeasfour among others. This is the first year that a business advisory committee made up of presidents and CEOs of labels like Calvin Klein, Cole Haan, and Diane Von Furstenberg will provide guidance and advice for all finalists.
For some pictures of the winner’s fall collection, click over to the next page.

A very hot trend this season is the full, pleated figure skating-style skirt as seen on
WhoWhatWearDaily. Usually super short and flowing, it can also be worn longer, as shown above on
Ashley Olsen and
Molly Sims. Pair it with a wide, high-waisted belt, opaque black tights and metallic or patent leather pumps to complete this ultra-fab look. And don’t worry, this is not a one season trend–you’ll get full wear of this chic skirt through spring and summer ’08. It was a haute trend throughout the runways of
PPQ (above, right),
Proenza Schouler, and
Donna Karan. Continue to the jump to find out wear you can find your own figure-skating-like fashions.
