Style spotlight: Sophie Dahl

By Andrea Petrou on March 27th, 2012

Sophie Dahl’s life has been like a fairytale. The granddaughter of author Roald Dahl was spotted at her super curvy stage by a scout after she helped pick up her shopping, and the rest, as they say, is history. Gracing the catwalks in basques and lingerie at the beginning of her career, the supermodel broke the super skinny taboo showing that curvy girls could be just as beautiful.

She also paved the way for plus sized models to be considered in campaigns and on the runway. However, like many a celebrity in the spotlight the pressure to be skinny took its toll and Sophie shrank down to a teeny, but still as beautiful size 10.

Although we haven’t seen too much of the model of late, her style is still one we love. Keeping in with the classic look the model is often spotted in LBDs on a night out.

When she’s with her hubby Jamie Cullum, Sophie will often opt for cute ballet pumps, whilst small kitten heels come out for an evening event.

Sophie is also happy to try different trends with tartans and patterned fabrics being staple pieces in her wardrobe.

See the gallery below for all her style.

Top five fad diets to avoid

By Andrea Petrou on January 6th, 2012

Every year, around this time, millions of ladies announce they will be going on a diet.

Some of us do it in a bid to get that celebrity figure, others to cleanse themselves of too much Christmas turkey and some to simply fit into that next size down pair of jeans without having to walk around breathing in the whole day – we hold our hands up to the latter.

However, there’s one thing we all want when it comes to the “D” word and that’s of course a quick fix. Let’s be honest if we could lose those stones and love handles with a magic pill we’d choose it over salad, no alcohol and no cakes, which is why so many of us turn to those “miracle diets”.

Some are endorsed by celebrities while others promise the world and whilst many may work there comes a price – think smells that you blame your other half for and starvation so bad you’ll tempted to push your pet out of the way and stick your face in their bowl. We give you the lowdown on the top five fad diets we think you should avoid.

1. The Master Cleanse diet, most commonly known as the lemonade or maple syrup diet.
Beyonce swore she lost 20Ib on this diet which is basically a concoction of lemon juice, water, maple syrup and cayenne pepper drank six to 12 times a day.
However, this isn’t the kind of lemonade you buy freshly from food markets. Beyonce may have looked fab but she said the juice made her “evil” – we assume she meant that horrible grouchiness you feel when you, well, haven’t eaten for days. And we all know what the spicy cayenne pepper was put in there for…. if you still want to do this diet we recommend staying close to a toilet at all times.

2. The baby food diet
We probably hate the stuff when we were babies, but it now seems some, including the likes of Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, are falling over themselves to get a jar of baby food.

The diet claims to help you lose pounds by swapping one or two meals a day for tinier, baby-size purees.

In theory this works, after all if you cut down your meals you’ll lose weight. However the effects will include hunger, probably a few trips to the loo and in extreme cases the urge to steal that last spoonful of grub from a nearby baby.

3. The Cabbage food diet
If you’re an extreme dieter then the cabbage food diet may have been one of the first you tried and probably never went back to. Apart from the obvious side effect that you’ll get from this diet, it’s pretty mundane.

For the first seven days you’re only allowed fruit, vegetables, skimmed milk and tea and coffee with the odd fat free yoghurt thrown in.

On the fourth day you have the privilege of  bananas and lean meat and brown rice on day six but thats as exciting it gets.

4. The Paleo Diet
This diet is based on what our ancestors were thought to have eaten- hence the name.
Boffins decided that if we ate meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, non-starchy and root vegetables, with a smattering of herbs, spices and some fruit and nuts we’d end up slimmer.

However, following this diet means avoiding wheat and dairy as well as many carbs meaning you don’t get the nutrients you need.

5. The tape worm diet.
We’re not sure if even we would be desperate enough to try this one and frankly we wouldn’t be able to afford it.

The diet is basically what it says on the tin – you plant a tapeworm inside your body and according to scientists it absorbs nutrients, which means that you can consume more calories and still lose around two pounds a week.

Apart from the gruesome reasons why this diet is no good, there are a few more flaws.

Firstly although there are a few places offering “tapeworm pills” implantation treatment is only offered in Mexico for around $1500. However, the effects including the formation of cysts in the liver, eyes, brain, and spinal cord as well as bloated belly and the risk of piling on the weight once the worm is expelled really don’t sell this one to us.

Miranda Kerr wants her son to date Stella McCartney’s daughter

By Andrea Petrou on October 4th, 2011

Miranda Kerr wants her son to date Stella McCartney’s daughter.

The Australian supermodel walked for the British designer – who has four children with husband Alasdhair Willis – at Paris Fashion Week and spotted a potential future love interest for Flynn, her nine-month-old son with spouse Orlando Bloom.

She said: “It’s funny because Stella’s little girl Reiley is almost the same age as Flynn so watch out – Flynn might start dating her.”

The 28-year-old beauty also admitted combining work with raising Flynn can be difficult while he is still so young.

She told People.com: “I’m still breastfeeding so I have to express milk and send it back to Flynn and then try and see him on my breaks.

“I was up for hours last night as he’s teething. And when he’s crying, he just wants Mommy! It’s such hard work.”

However, Miranda admits her husband is a great help with the baby as he is very hands-on.

She added: “He loves changing diapers! But seriously, he’s very hands on. I really couldn’t ask for a better dad.”

Despite her praise for Orlando, Miranda insists the couple have no plans for any more children in the near future.

Asked if they are ready to expand their family, she said: “Not yet but let’s see.”

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley keeps her figure thanks to three personal trainers

By Andrea Petrou on October 3rd, 2011

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has three personal trainers.

The British beauty – who is the face of Burberry Body – admits she needs to always be in the gym to maintain her trim physique, and has trainers in all three cities in which she works.

She said: “It takes lots and lots of hard work. I have three personal trainers – James Duigan in London, Jason Walsh in Los Angeles and my friend Justin in New York. That means there’s no excuse not to be in the gym wherever I go.”

In addition to a strict exercise regime, the 24-year-old model also controls what she eats, and tries to put few carbohydrates into her body.

She added to Britain’s Grazia magazine: “Everything starts with exercise. Then you want to look after yourself and put good food in your body.

“I have a really good response when I cut out carbs so that’s something I always do before a great event. I eat a high-protein diet and lots of greens.”

Kim Kardashian admits it’s “hard” work to maintain her stunning figure

By Andrea Petrou on July 26th, 2011

Kim Kardashian admits it’s “hard” work to maintain her stunning figure.

The 30-year-old socialite – who is famed for her womanly curves – says her love of food means she has to work out very regularly to stop her from gaining weight, which isn’t always easy.

She told Britain’s Hello! magazine: “I love to eat, but I also love to work out, so hopefully they cancel each other out. If I need to get in shape for a photo shoot or to get back into my bikini, I cut back on processed foods and carbs for two weeks.

“I have always been curvy and for a long time I’ve been doing a class in West Hollywood called Barry’s Bootcamp. But recently I started working out with Tracy Anderson. It looks really easy but is really hard work. After 12 weeks working out with her, I really saw a difference. But it’s hard because I really love food and have a really sweet tooth. My weakness is ice cream and frozen yoghurt.”

Kim also revealed how she isn’t a fan of Botox after once using the non-invasive fillers.

She said: “I’m totally not against plastic surgery. I tried Botox and wasn’t impressed. That’s the only thing I’ve had done. My eyes looked different, but it didn’t make me look any younger, so I’m going to stick to anti-wrinkle cream for now.”

Daisy Lowe had a weight meltdown

By Andrea Petrou on June 8th, 2011

Daisy Lowe had “meltdowns” about feeling like a “massive tree trunk”.

The 22-year-old beauty says it has taken her several years to be comfortable with her curvaceous figure and though she knows she isn’t fat, Daisy admits she can’t help but feel big next to slimmer models.

She said: “It has taken me seven years to get to the point where I can be comfortable with not being as thin as the rest of them.

“The public can say, ‘It’s really cool that you’re not conforming to this anorexic ideal’, but then I still have to go and stand next to all of the other girls. I’m not saying that I am big, but when you stand next to a beanpole, you’re going to look like a massive tree trunk.

“Literally, it’s only in the past six months that I’ve come to terms with it. Before then…it was hard. I used to have private meltdowns all the time.”

The stylish star – whose parents are fashion designer Pearl Lowe and rocker Gavin Rossdale – also admitted when she isn’t working, she loves to wear the clothes of her actor boyfriend Matt Smith, particularly when he is away filming as they make her feel closer to him.

She told the July issue of InStyle magazine: “He dresses really well. I love his style.”

Pippa Middleton-style behind is ‘achievable’

By Andrea Petrou on May 25th, 2011

Celebrity fitness instructor Mark Anthony claims a butt like Pippa Middleton’s can be achieved by walking differently.

The exercise expert – who has counted ‘Harry Potter’ actress Bonnie Wright, glamour model Katie Price, and singer-turned-actress Billie Piper amongst his clients – insists there are small lifestyle changes that can be made in everyday life in order to achieve a perfectly-toned behind like the much-admired sister of Princess Catherine.

Mark said: “You can achieve a pert ‘Pippa’ bottom by making a few adjustments to your daily routine. When you’re walking to work, take long strides, squeeze your glutes and keep your abs tight and firm.

“When you’re sitting behind a desk, throw your shoulders back and keep your abs lovely and tight. If you can try and keep to this posture when you eventually stand up you engage your glutes every single time. So technically you`re firing up the muscles in your bum every time you stand up at work!”

Mark – whose recent work has involved helping to launch the new Solero Explosions lolly by getting British reality TV star Jessica Wright in shape ahead of her holiday – also urged those wanting to get in shape for the summer to drink more water and eat small, regular meals.

He added: “By consuming at least two litres of water a day this will help you flush out the excess water retention that your body is holding.

“Smart eating is key to maintaining your energy levels. Make sure that you are eating small regular meals throughout each day and never miss breakfast. Reduce the amount of salt in your diet and try to limit alcohol to weekends. Always include a light snack in between breakfast and lunch and between lunch

“Don’t be afraid to reward your hard work occasionally with a treat – there are only 90 calories in a delicious Solero Explosion, so you can indulge without the guilt.”

My Detox Diary days 4 and 5: Purifyne 7 day cleansing programme

By Andrea Petrou on December 9th, 2009

Purifyne.JPG
Before I started my cleansing programme on Saturday morning, I wrote down all the things I would eat as soon as it was over. It included many of my fast food favourites and I even threw in some chocolate for good measure.

However, as I see in day 5, the list, which has been silently giving me motivation from my fridge door, doesn’t actually seem very appealing anymore. In fact after seeing the effects of the 5 days and the way my body is working to release the toxins, I’m actually quite put off the type of food I used to gorge on.

This is something that is said to happen as a detox not only cleanses your body but your mind too. Unfortunately I’m not talking about getting rid of all those embarrassing memories, it’s more about your approach to food.

Yesterday, for the first time since I began, my stomach didn’t feel empty and I had bucket loads of energy. My running seemed to form the theme for the day and after that it was the housework (believe me that’s a big achievement) followed by a swim and sauna.

It’s recommended you visit the sauna as much as possible when you’re on the programme as it helps you get rid of the toxins inside you more quickly.

My headaches have gone and my spots faded, apart from the stubborn one or two that are still lurking around. However, I experienced some more effects, which I won’t go into too much detail about, except for saying you probably wouldn’t want to stand under my arm on the tube.

I’m also slightly bloated. Apparently this is because some fruit and veg in the juices have high acidic values, which could temporarily increase stomach acidity with some people who are more sensitive and thus lead to bloating. Nevertheless, it’s not a major problem, it just means that my size 6′s are just a little bit snug at the moment.

It also seems others are seeing my benefits more than me. On my first trip out since I began the detox, friends told me that I was “glowing” and looking extremely healthy.

Apparently I am in Royal company when it comes to this. Princess Diana was one of the first public advocates of cleansing and colonics; she used them three times a week to get her glowing complexion. If you’re feeling washed out, tired and looking haggard, chances are that a revitalising cleanse will restore your skin to health.

However, I’m still waiting for another known benefit to kick in and thats the reduction of cellulite.

The level of toxins in your system is one of the main causes of this. The first place that your body stores dietary toxins is in the cells just under your skin. Poisoning these cells with junk food and coca can disrupt this layer of cells, causing the cellulite but apparently cleansing can reverse this process.

I do think that I will possibly need to do this a few times to see this effect, afterall, Purifyne isn’t a miracle worker.

Read on tomorrow to see how I feel for the rest of the day.
