Dita Von Teese likes to wear red lipstick every day

By Andrea Petrou on December 8th, 2011

Dita Von Teese likes to wear red lipstick every day.

The glamorous beauty – who is renowned for her 1940s styling – likes to spend time on her outfit, but even when she is in a rush she believes rouged lips help create a high-impact look.

She said: “One of the things that I do to have a glamorous day is take a bit of time to put on make-up and chose clothes that I like to wear – it doesn’t mean being uncomfortable, I don’t wear corsets or stockings every day but a little bit of red lipstick goes a long way.”

To get the best effect, Dita – who was previously married to rocker Marilyn Manson – believes lighting is pivotal, as is practice, because even she gets make-up wrong if she hasn’t applied it for some time.

She added to Stylist.co.uk: “Have a good vanity place to do your makeup and a place with good lighting – natural light is the best. Also, always have enough extra time so you’re not rushing to get ready. The more often you do it, the better – practice makes perfect. If I don’t do my eyeliner for a week or so I’m not so good at it.

“Practice is everything when it comes to beauty. I don’t always have a perfect hair day either but it helps to have a back-up plan for when things go wrong like wearing a hat or learning how to do a French twist.”

Dita Von Teese thinks she has a classic look

By Andrea Petrou on November 16th, 2011

Dita Von Teese thinks her look will “work at any age”.

The 39-year-old burlesque model explained she had an “epiphany” at a recent shoot, and discovered she can still maintain her “classy” style when she gets older, as her hair, make-up and clothing choices have become like a “uniform” to her.

She said: “I was doing a photo shoot and the make-up artist had made me up to have grey hair but I was still wearing the same clothes and had the same make-up. I was scanning me in the mirror and I just had this epiphany that I was perfect – I looked like a classy, old lady.

“I won’t have to change my look when I get older, it’ll work at any age. I’m not sure what Paris Hilton will be wearing when she gets to 70.

“My look is like a uniform to me, I know each morning what I’ll be doing with my make-up and hair, how long my hem line will be. I like to evolve my look, but I don’t feel compelled to update it.”

However, the raven-haired beauty – who has appeared in campaigns for the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood in the past – admitted she isn’t naturally blessed with a trim figure and “works hard” to look so glamorous.

Dita added in an interview with Vogue.co.uk: “I don’t try to tell people I’m naturally anything, I’m not going to tell you that I eat pizza all day and look like this – I don’t.

“I work hard to maintain a glamorous look, and to tell women that they can achieve it too. We all want to have a plump, juicy and luscious figures – I just try hard to stay fit.”

Christian Louboutin is releasing a style book about his designs

By emilyborrett on September 22nd, 2011

For anyone who has a little bit of an Achilles heel when it comes to, well, heels, there’s a new glossy hardback coming out that you’ll definitely want on your coffee table as the legendary shoe designer Christian Louboutin has revealed he’s planning to release a book on his iconic designs.

Christian Louboutin is like the holy grail of designer heels with his legendary red-bottomed soles, so we can’t wait to take a peek at the new book (currently it’s missing a title, but hopefully Christian will find the time to think one up).

The book is planned to be divided into six chapters, with the first showing the designer’s work earliest in his career, including pieces that created for Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent and the other chapters showing his inspirations, the international stores, and gushing contributions from some of his loveliest, most famous friends – including Dita Von Teese and Kristen Scott Thomas.

We hope it’s out soon – we want it to go riiiiiiight to the top of our Christmas list IMMEDIATELY.

Asos Marketplace highlight: Poppy Valentine

We’re massive fans of the relatively new Asos Marketplace here at ShinyStyle, where young independent fashion and jewellery designers can have a platform to showcase and sell their work. Today it’s pin-curls and court heels at the ready for Poppy Valentine, the vintage-inspired independent label we’ve just discovered that specialises in 40s and 50s designs.

The high street is brilliant for vintage-style pieces, but sometimes you just can’t beat a handmade piece made from genuine vintage fabrics where a lot of love and care has gone into the garment – and that’s what Poppy Valentine is all about.

Our personal favourite design from the collection is their 40s-style wrap dress, which comes in a variety of different prints and isn’t completely unlike the kind of thing Miu Miu has been making lately. They’re completely elegant and perfect for channelling your inner Dita Von Teese with some coiffed hair and red lipstick.

Check out the gallery above to see Poppy Valentine’s designs – just one of many good reasons why you should give Asos Marketplace a go.

Dita Von Teese to create her underwear range

By Andrea Petrou on April 14th, 2011

Dita Von Teese is set to release her first lingerie range under her own name.

The burlesque star has signed a global licensing agreement with Australia’s Lime Door Brands for a collection of underwear to appear with her name.

As part of the deal, Dita and the branding firm will also become co-owners of other brands, including a line of dresses.

Dita, 38, told WWD: “I’m delighted to be in the process of creating both a line of retro-glamorous clothing and lingerie.”

The brands will first be introduced to Australia later this year, with plans to expand to the UK, then other markets later.

Michele Hamdorf, CEO of Lime Door, said: “Dita Von Teese is world-renowned as a burlesque performer. She is probably best described as an old-school Hollywood siren.

“Her success has been based on her strong head for business and her distinctiveness. As a brand strategist and developer, I am certain that our collaboration will prove similarly successful.”

The star’s raunchy performances often see her in little more than scant underwear, and she has previously spoken about the importance of wearing fancy smalls.

She said: “Indulging in elegant lingerie isn’t about the seduction of another person, it’s about seducing yourself first and embracing womanhood and femininity.”

Dita also has already proved herself in the underwear market, with a successful line for Wonderbra.

She added: “I did a line with Wonderbra, which was only in Europe – it did really well. I’d like to remind women, especially in America, that lingerie can be beautiful and functional. You don’t have to have your work lingerie and your date lingerie; it can be the same thing. I want to do bigger sizes, because I have a lot of female fans that are curvy girls.”

Dita’s collection will include sizes from extra small to plus sizes, as well as bras that are sized up to E cup.

By Andrea Petrou on February 10th, 2011

A slew of celebrities took to the runway in red dresses to show their support for the American Heart Association’s annual Wear Red Day in the lead up to New York Fashion Week.
Dita Von Teese kicked off the red dress parade in a slinky satin number by Zac Posen, while Denise Richards wore a pale red dress by British designer Matthew Williamson, complete with a silver belt and frilled bottom.

Natasha Bedingfield gave a nod to the vintage trend with a frock that was split to the waist by Nicole Miller and Cat Deeley sashayed down with Alberta Ferretti.

Audrina Patridge however, really lit up the stage in a sequined number by Badgley Mischka.

Take inspiration from these gorgeous dresses for Valentines Day.

Happy Birthday, Dita Von Teese

By Andrea Petrou on September 28th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

Classic, 1930s jewel-encrusted Dita-style - furs and an awful lot of costume jewellery, round about the time that she ceased to be an underground act and became a burlesque superstar.

Happy birthday to the “queen of burlesque” and pin-up girl for all things bright and beautiful, Dita Von Teese, who is turning 38 years old today. (It feels weird typing that – she looks about twenty.)

She may have originally only entered our consciousness because of her relationship and marriage to pop-rock weirdo Marilyn Manson way back when, but she’s certainly not famous through connections anymore. Her sexy, cartoonish old-school style, which is a bit of a mashup between Betty Boop and Jessica Rabbit, has won her millions of fans and secured her title as the “Queen of Burlesque”. She’s loved by both men and women respectively – women love her because she’s sexy without adhering to modern stereotypes of “female beauty”, and men love her because, well, she’s just really sexy.

And fashion loves her too – she wiggled down the catwalk earlier this year in full vamp-mode for Jean-Paul Gaultier’s couture show, attired in black retro-looking bondage, PVC and not much else besides a crazily fierce oversized head-piece in Paris. She’s a regular face not only on the catwalk but in the front row too, bagging many a sought-after front row seat for some of the most prestigious fashion houses in the world, and a regular advocate of the likes of Christian Dior and Marc Jacobs.

Dita is a girl’s girl, an amazing dresser and a true fashion-lover. And that’s why we love her. Love, love, love. So much love for the best-dressed striptease artist in the world. Happy birthday, Dita.

The alter ego of Nicola Roberts

By alanamcverry on April 23rd, 2010

NicolaRob22.jpgAs far as my opinion of Nicola Roberts goes, she’s not someone I give too much thought to. I think she’s a reasonably stylish gal, despite her unfortunate beginnings in a television created bubble pop band. Big fan of the red hair and the pale skin, yet something has gone very wrong here. So lets learn a lesson, if you are slapping on the suncream to keep your skin pasty white this summer (as I will be), you have to be more careful with what you wear. Particularly if you’re quite slim too, showing off too much skin can just make you look like a bit ill. Combining a fragile pasty frame with a very small outfit and nothing to fill it reminds me of ladies of the night funding some kind of habit thats emaciated their frames. If you subscribe to the petite and pasty club, all showing dresses never look right. Even dita von teese tends to only show off one asset at a time at most, otherwise there’s just too much glaring white skin on show. So cover it up a bit, and tone down the colour if you want to avoid looking like your biggest fashion influence was the older side of the red light district. I’m not suggesting she’s all the way there with this outfit, but she’s definitely buying her ticket.
