Banana Republic launches green Heritage for Women line this spring

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 22nd, 2009

Banana Republic SS09 Runway 013.jpg

We love shopping green, but it’s a hard row to hoe! (Like that? Gardening reference in a GREEN article. Gosh we’re funny.) If you want to try things on, as in not shop online, you have to seek out expensive lines and city boutiques. So we’re super excited that Banana Republic is bringing more sustainable fashion to the mall.

Plus, when it’s BR, you know it’s not going to be too hippy dippy, and that the quality will be good. They describe it as eco-chic meets weekend chic. Items in the line will include the Classic Novelty Gaucho, Silk Explorer Shirt, Long Embroidered Strapless Dress, Short Sleeve Jamie Pocket Tee and Cargo Khaki Bloomer.

Designer Pick of Earth Week: Theory for Barney’s Green Ellisa Trench

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on April 22nd, 2008

We all know by now how hard it is to find organic, eco-friendly clothing. And when you can, it’s mostly T-shirts and jeans – which are fabulous. But sometimes you need more of a style statement.

That’s why we were thrilled by this Ellisa trench from Theory for Barney’s Green, $515. It is crafted of organic sateen with a double breasted style and ruched belted waist.

If you’re a designer shopper, it’s getting easier to go green with your fashion with programs like Barney’s Green and brands like Edun, Loomstate, and Stella McCartney. It is a lot harder for the bargain shopper, but come back Thursday for our bargain pick of Earth week and we’ll do our best.

Nvohk embraces a new, consumer-driven business model for fashion designers

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 17th, 2008

The plight of the fashion designer who wants to create and sell their clothes to the masses, but lacks the funding to do so has really come into the spotlight lately. The increased interest in independent and up-and-coming designers combined with industry-illuminating media like Project Ruwnay has shown average consumers the process a designer has to go through to get their clothes in stores.

Well, Nvohk is turning that process on its head. Calling itself the first “community managed, eco-friendly, surf-inspired clothing company,” the brand calls upon regular people to chip in $50 a year to fund the clothing line and participate in business decisions. In return, community members receive reward points based on profits redeemable for Nvohk clothing, and a 25% discount on the clothing.

It might sound a little cooky, but 1,900 people have signed up since December.

Designers Lutz and Patmos care about consumers’ money woes

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on February 29th, 2008

While most designers are saying to heck with recession and continueing to allow their prices to climb, Tina Lutz and Marcia Patmos seem to actually care about their customers.

“When we met, we were so poor, but we still wanted to be stylish,” Lutz told WWD. “We have lowered Lutz & Patmos’ prices by 30 percent since we started the company. But we wanted to do something more.”

That something more is a new contemporary line of eco-friendly knitwear to be sold exclusively at Barney’s under the label Leroy and Perry. The collection is named after two streets in the West Village where the design duo first struggled for success.

The pair teamed with Barney’s Green to create three sweaters made from organic cotton or yarn from recycled T-shirts and bamboo. Each style will retail for under $300.

The Lutz and Patmos ARP cape cardigan above is $485.

PETA’s Trollsen twins mock the Olsen twins

By Andrea Thatcher on December 12th, 2007

Trollsons.jpg

Wow, that is one harsh graphic. I’ve certainly thought the Olsens were too skinny, or God-forbid looked a little trashy on occasion, but I’d never come up with something like that. But PETA did. The Olsen twins have felt the full force of PETA’s wrath over their decision to wear fur, with a new online campaign which features a creepy spoof dress-up game nicknaming them ‘Hairy-Kate’ and ‘Trashley’ Olsen. ‘Dress up the Trollsens’ asks users to dress the girls with ‘fatal fashion’ items including dead dogs, bleeding fur coats, choked chinchilla caps and murdered mink miniskirts. Unnecessary and harsh it may be, but no doubt it will help secure PETA even more publicity. Furthermore, a video parody of a Full House episode is also available to watch – but beware of graphic scenes of animal cruelty.
