Designer Elie Saab prefers celebrities, not models, to wear his designs

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

The Lebanese fashion designer, Elie Saab, has admitted that he much prefers to see actresses and celebrities wearing his designs instead of models, because they are much more like “real women”.

His collections are well known for their sparkle-encrusted feminine dresses, and have been favoured for the red carpet in the past by the likes of Emma Watson, Rihanna, Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart. Saab feels that women like these “do justice” to his designs.

He explained to Britain’s HELLO! magazine: “Unlike the catwalk, where the 17-year-old models are so tall, the red carpet is like a podium for real life – it means so much more to me to see them in my dresses.”

We’re real women! Just send us a dress and we’ll wear it for you! Might have to take it up a couple of sizes though..

Paris Haute Couture Week: Elie Saab

By Andrea Petrou on January 26th, 2011

Chanel’s show in Paris yesterday was always going to be a hard act to follow, but Lebanese designer Elie Saab dove right in and showed his credentials with an array of gowns in the beautiful Saab style that we’ve come to love. Favoured by red-carpet young guns such as Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, we already knew that the show was going to be a glamorous affair.

In the past Elie Saab has created very flirty, youthful dresses for young starlets, with hemlines falling way above the knee in shimmering tones of peach, beige and pink. However, it seems that the brand has grown up, as the majority of its’ collection was comprised on full-on, look-at-me superstar gowns. There were the same classic nude tones that Saab has favoured for a while in there, but we also saw vibrant Valentino reds, olive-greens and barely-there silvers which were breathtaking in swathes of chiffon and lace. And – gasp – black! We loved Saab’s final few black gowns which were endlessly dramatic and sexy, with slitted skirts to show off amazing pins and sweetheart necklines. Absolutely Jessica Rabbit-worthy.

As we saw before in Chanel’s couture show, ruffles and volume were the adornment du jour. We could have died for the rose-hued clusters of fabric that were smattered amongst hemlines and necklines – heartbreakingly feminine and pretty.

More conventional than other shows this week, the collection may not have got people talking in the same way that Givenchy’s cyber-kimonos or Chanel’s frothy babydoll shapes probably have, but Saab created yet another stellar collection of gowns which we expect to see on the red carpet in the very near future. And if it’s good enough for Hollywood’s elite, it’s sure as hell good enough for us.

Golden Globe Awards: Scarlett Johansson wears Elie Saab

By Andrea Petrou on January 16th, 2011

We’ve got lots of galleries lined up for you and as soon as we get the pics we’ll be bringing you all the red carpet dresses from the Glee girls, Angelina Jolie, Helena Bonham Carter and lots more.

However, while we eagerly await the pics we thought we’d focus on the gorgeous Scarlett Johansson, who like many stars this year looked hot hot hot. The starlet opted for an on-trend nude embellished frock by Elie Saab complete with sheer sleeves – another hot red carpet trend this year – and a short train.

She’s definitely one of our best dressed.

Paris Fashion Week highlights: Elie Saab

By Andrea Petrou on October 6th, 2010

Fashion house Elie Saab has been a firm favourite with fashion pack-leaders such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and Blake Lively at pretty much every red-carpet event that’s happened over the past year, so the standard expected for their SS2011 collection at Paris Fashion Week was always going to be high. But they outdid themselves with what they presented on the runway.

The label is getting well-known for their sugary, sparkle-encrusted candy-coloured dresses that have been coveted on the red carpet a lot recently, and the beginning of the collection promised to be much of the same, as a model walked out in a pair of lilac tapered trousers, tied in a sash-bow at the front, and matching blazer worn over an embellished lilac vest. Good enough to eat. Following suit was a candyfloss-looking pleated chiffon gown in a matching pale purple, and stunning coral embellished minidress bow detailing around the navel area that I’ll probably be seeing in my dreams for years. Very, very girly, yes, but the collection avoided being nauseating by having a few more modern, understated basics thrown into the mix – notable was the fitted cream dress with very Balmain-style padded shoulders, and the sky-blue fitted maxi. It’s colour was so dreamy, it didn’t need any fussiness or detailing – and so it didn’t have any. Perfect.

Other designers have surprised and shocked us with drastic changes in their collections’ aesthetics this week, but Elie Saab has stuck to what it knows: beautiful, girly cocktail dresses and separates. You can look at it two ways: you can say that it’s unadventurous and more of the same, or you can say that they’re just on to a Very Good Thing. Maybe sometimes sticking to what you know isn’t so bad at all.

Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Ashley Greene step out for the LA premier of Twilight Eclipse

By Andrea Petrou on June 24th, 2010

It was the night that Twilight fans had been waiting for and many camped out a week in advance to see Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and co, grace the red carpet for the premier of Twilight Eclipse, which was held at the Nokia Plaza in LA.

And we don’t think they were disappointed. Kristen Stewart graced the red carpet in a white Elie Saab asymmetric blackless number and Christian Louboutin shoes. However, she changed these half way through as they were hurting her feet. Dakota Fanning also went for an Elie Saab beige feathered frock, which she teamed up with beige shoes while Ashley Greene opted for a gorgeous a light-blue column dress by Alexis Mabille Couture.

And the boys didn’t look to bad either. Robert Pattinson looked every inch the Hollywood star as he walked the red carpet in a maroon Gucci suit, which, let’s face it, only he could get away with while Taylor Lautner opted for a sleek grey tailored number for his appearance.

Take a look at the gallery below for all the Twilight Eclipse premier pictures.

Get the look: Anna Kendrick’s red carpet style at highstreet prices

By Andrea Petrou on June 22nd, 2010

Anna Kendrick is one of the Twilight starlets who has been out shadowed by Kristen Stewart but she’s a fashion icon in her own right.

The star who plays popular girl Jessica in the films has never put a fashion foot out of place turning up to events in gorgeous dresses ranging from sassy and short to elegant ball gown. And she’s also right up to date with her designers.

She wore a stunning Elie Saab couture gown to this years Oscars and an Emilio Pucci short frock to the BAFTAs. However, unlike many of the starlets who hit the red carpet Jessica’s style can easily be copied, especially her short frocks which when toned down with a pair of flats can be a perfect summer evening outfit.

We’ve put together some of her red carpet dresses with some highstreet suggestions, which you can wear on a night out or to a summer BBQ.

Haute Couture Fashion Week Spring 09: Dita Von Teese, Mischa Barton and Kanye West at Elie Saab

By Andrea Thatcher on January 28th, 2009

Elie Saab Dita Von Teese Mischa Barton.jpg

Dita Von Teese and Mischa Barton celebrate Elie Saab’s Spring 2009 Haute Couture collection with the designer. You can read about the confectionary collection at the link above. While we find Von Teese’s hair and makeup a bit harsh, her black ensemble is perfection. Mischa Barton’s short, one-sleeved gown and over-the-shoulder hairstyle looked most glamorous while seated on the runway, as you can see after the jump.

Best-dressed at the Emmys pick

By Andrea Thatcher on September 21st, 2007

Jennifer%20Morrison_Emmys.JPGAfter looking through hundreds of red-carpet shots from the Emmy’s this past week, we’ve selected “House” co-star Jennifer Morrison as the most glamorously dressed starlet. Her sparkling silver beaded gown by Elie Saab is both elegant and sexy. I’m definitely diggin’ the one-shoulder strap and the way the gown is designed to look like it gathers at the hip. Plus showing some serious leg is always hot! Her silver platform sandals by Brian Atwood are accented with a dazzling jeweled brooch, pleated vamp detail, and halter slingback strap. And I love her hair. The style looks great on her and goes perfectly with the dress’ flapper-like beaded string design. If you look closely at the picture on the right, you can see that Jennifer’s wearing fabric tape on her back to keep her dress in place. That stuff is awesome, I use it all the time! Check out our close seconds at the jump.
