Designer Olympic creations

By Andrea Petrou on July 27th, 2012

Britain has been buzzing with the Olympics for a good few months now. And with the event officially kicking off today, there’s bound to be much more excitement surrounding the games over the next few weeks.

However, it’s not just the public that’s been taken in by this huge event, with designers across the globe all making sure they give a nod to this sporting event.

Prada, Karl Lagerfeld and of course Stella McCartney are just a few of the designers who have paid tribute to this event, creating capsule collections, and in some cases, the outfits for different country’s teams.

See a few of these in the gallery below.

Freida Pinto doesn’t go to flea markets for fashion bargains anymore

By emilyborrett on August 30th, 2011

Freida Pinto seems to have finally realised how famous and successful she is, because she’s admitted that she’s no longer trying to scrimp and save every penny at flea markets.

The “Slumdog Millionaire” actress may be rich enough to not buy second-hand clothes anymore, but she’s still amazed that she can employ stylists to dress her now. Freida said: “I have access to certain things that I wouldn’t ever have before. I used to go down to the flea markets and put these things together and take them to my tailor to be fixed up. And now there are other people who do that for me!”

While the down-to-earth star has been previously used to hunting in flea markets, she’s also confessed that she loves getting ready for red carpet events and getting to wear couture gowns. Freida explained her love of the red carpet: “I look at it as fun. I think it’s terrifying if you’re trying to do something you’re not comfortable with, or trying to channel something you’re not. But if you’re just being true to the kind of clothes you wear, it’s fun.”

Gallery: Celebrity Big Brother Launch Party

By emilyborrett on August 16th, 2011

Jenny Frost looked pretty and glamorous in her black maxi dress, hanging off Jeff Brazier who looked sweet in a tweed blazer

We always knew that Big Brother would be back, and now that lovely old Channel 5 has bought the show it’s not going to be long until it’s back on the airwaves. Yesterday the press launch party took place in Hertfordshire, with Big Brother’s most famous (and forgotten) faces in attendance.

Naturally, Brian Belo was there – the day he doesn’t come to anything BB related will be the day we die of shock – and he actually looked quite nice yesterday in a crumpled white shirt with some slim-fitting men’s chinos. Another Brian that looked quite lovely was our favourite, Brian Dowling, who looked very dapper and sharp in a two-piece grey men’s suit.

On the girl’s side we had the beautiful TV presenter Emma Willis, who looked fresh and pretty in a polka-dot tea dress with red detailing and red patent heels. Also there was the ex-Atomic Kitten and Snog Marry Avoid? presenter Jenny Frost, who showed off long, tanned pins in a split-skirt black maxi dress, with lots and lots of gold jewellery. Keep up the good work, Jenny.

We must also note that some ex-housemates did not make much of a sterling effort: last series’ Sam Pepper wore scruffy cut-offs, his usual cap and a bright yellow T-shirt. I’m sorry, Sam, but didn’t anyone tell you that this is a glitzy event? BRIAN BELO is here, for god’s sake. 2009′s Marcus Akin was there – you know, the one that looks like a rubbish Wolverine – in a cringey Ed Hardy tee and leather bracelets. No one should wear Ed Hardy when they’re emptying the cat litter tray, let alone going to a press party. Take note Marcus.

Designer Elie Saab prefers celebrities, not models, to wear his designs

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

The Lebanese fashion designer, Elie Saab, has admitted that he much prefers to see actresses and celebrities wearing his designs instead of models, because they are much more like “real women”.

His collections are well known for their sparkle-encrusted feminine dresses, and have been favoured for the red carpet in the past by the likes of Emma Watson, Rihanna, Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart. Saab feels that women like these “do justice” to his designs.

He explained to Britain’s HELLO! magazine: “Unlike the catwalk, where the 17-year-old models are so tall, the red carpet is like a podium for real life – it means so much more to me to see them in my dresses.”

We’re real women! Just send us a dress and we’ll wear it for you! Might have to take it up a couple of sizes though..

Spotted: Jaime Winstone, Gizzi Erksine, Lady Gaga, Daisy Lowe and more

By emilyborrett on August 1st, 2011

Glamorous chef Gizzi Erskine was festival perfection this weekend at Bestival in a sweet playsuit and beehive

It’s been an excellent few days for celebrity-spying as there have been festivals, premières and photo-calls galore. While some of us have been sleeping off our holiday excesses and stressing about our depleted bank balances (thank you Summer, you most expensive of the seasons), our favourite celebs have been up and at it.

Our favourite celebrity chef Gizzi Erskine, who is infinitely more beautiful and fashionable than the likes of Gordon Ramsay or Heston Blumenthal, was spotted at Bestival this weekend looking like vintage perfection outside her Tiki Lounge in an adorable playsuit with her trademark beehive and some quirky pineapple-shaped sunglasses. This is playful fashion at it’s best – we’ll be keeping a close eye on Gizzi from now on.

Meanwhile, back in the Big Smoke, a fashion happening was going on at the unveiling of Pearl Lowe’s new 1920s-inspired collection for Peacocks. Pearl’s feline daughter, Daisy, was there modelling one of the creations, a wine-coloured velvet dress with a beautiful crochet collar. We can’t wait for this lot to go on sale.

There was also a party honouring the launch of a new book on hip-hop going on at the Red Bull studios in London, where Kelly Brook was spotted there looking healthy and happy in a brilliantly-white midi dress with matching heels. As well as Kelly, T4 presenter Jameela Jamil rocked up in a cool zipped corset top teamed up with primrose-yellow hotpants and chunky gothic accessories.

At the ICA in London, celebrities showed up to the screening of new indie-flick Our Day Will Come – Jaime Winstone and designer Pam Hogg turned up flaunting their London street-style credentials in clashing prints and tailoring, as did girl rapper M.I.A. in a huge black biker jacket with a slouchy denim shirt.

At a photocall in Berlin, the Black Swan actress Mila Kunis was photographed smiling like the cat got the cream besides heart-throb Justin Timberlake in a rose-pink silk cocktail dress.

It was all go for the paparazzis across the pond as well, as popstrel Lady Gaga was seen leaving the infamous celeb hangout Chateau Marmont dressed up to the nines as usual in a clinging black dress split up the front with a plunging neckline, with gleaming PVC ankle boots. Someone’s already embracing the Autumn/Winter fetish trend!

In Los Angeles, Freida Pinto was seen at the première of her new film “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”  wearing an emerald-green maxi dress. She looked absolutely stunning, but then she’d look good in a bin-bag.

Check out our gallery to see the best-dressed celebrities from the past few days.

Spotted at the Pre-Grammy Gala: Katy Perry, Kelly Osbourne, Kelly Rowland and Leona Lewis

While the fashion glitterati are all out in full force at the moment for NY Fashion Week, all of the music industry’s brightest were out in Los Angeles last night for the Pre-Grammy Gala and Salute to Industry Icons honouring David Geffen (try saying that with a mouthful of chips). Some legendary LA veterans were there tonight, such as writer Jackie Collins and diva queen Whitney Houston, looking every inch the Hollywood party-girls in shimmering cocktail dresses, but there were also plenty of young whippersnappers out as well showing their fashion credentials.

Representing old Blighty were Kelly and Sharon Osboune and popstrel extraordinaire Leona Lewis. Both of the Osbourne women looked at their goth best in lace dresses – Sharon opted for an elegant midi-length dress with a curve-hugging skirt, while Kelly kept her lace sheerer and her hemline higher to show off her teensy new body. Meanwhile, we’re still undecided on Leona’s outfit. She’s already not known for always getting it right at events (remember when she tried to be Gaga?) but we’re struggling to decide whether her fluorescent two-piece was on-trend or just plain horrible. Whatever verdict we come to, we’ll say this – her fringe looked nice.

Meanwhile the Stateside stars showed exactly why they’re the industry’s biggest divas. Jennifer Hudson appeared for the paps wearing a gorgeous figure hugging dress (someone has obviously been dieting, BTW) that showed off her curves to perfection. She completed the Monroe-esque look with a shock of red lipstick and vintage-style bangs; we hope she keeps this look forever. Katy Perry was gorgeous as usual in an extravagant sweetheart necklined gown, but looked a little more sombre than normal, especially with her poker-straightened hair. Bring back the blue wigs please.

Kelly Rowland and Miley Cyrus were polar opposites last night, with Kelly looking classy and beautiful in a Grecian draped blue gown, whilst Miley opted for the dodgiest shiny dress we’ve ever seen, complete with fishnet cut-outs and PVC. Put it away Miley, you’re only twelve.

ShinyStyle’s top 10 fashion moments of 2010

By Andrea Petrou on December 16th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

As the end of the year draws to a close and we start looking forward to the beginning of 2011, we’ve decided to do a little reminiscing over the past year. Who’s designed the best collections, who’s worn what, who’s launched this and whose names we should know. Below is the top 10 countdown of our favourite all-time fashion moments over 2010, the ones that we think have been the most important. Check it out below.

10. Lady Gaga's infamous meat dress

Picture 1 of 10

Whether you loved it or hated it, the meat outfit that Gaga wore to the VMAs this year certainly got people talking. Her choice of dress material raised severe criticism from animal rights groups such as PETA - her claim that the message of the outfit was that she was "not a piece of meat" was met with some cynicism. Was she being avant-garde, or just extreme for the sake of extreme?

Fashion Crush: Diana Vickers wears design by Charlotte Taylor to the launch of her new single

Who remembers how Diana Vickers used to look? The birds’ nest of hair, the crazy-lady nightgowns and her trademark clawed hand? Those fashion faux-pas of the past seem a terribly long time ago for Vickerz, who has a new single on the way and, we assume, a much better stylist. No longer does she dress like a poor man’s Stevie Nicks – like a butterfly, she’s emerged from her chiffon-and-patchouli cocoon as a sleek, fierce creature of fashion.

Top marks to the singer for turning up to the launch of her new self-penned single “My Wicked Heart”, wearing a kooky printed outfit from up-and-coming designer Charlotte Taylor, one of our favourite designers who showed at Vauxhall Fashion Scout earlier this  year. Bright blue and yellow penguin-print is difficult to pull off unless you’re already a well-established bizarre fashion bitch, but Diana made it look effortless, teaming the print with a scruffy up-do and metallic blue loafers. We love.

We’ve been fans of Charlotte Taylor’s designs for a while now, and seeing pop’s girl next door  pull it off has inspired us to try and rock them too. To take a look at the ready-to-wear pieces from her A/W collection, click here. You’ll have to save up, though.

As a celebration of Miss Vickers’ new found extroverted sense of fashion, we’ve compiled a gallery of some of her best recent looks. Shiny Style loves you, Diana!
