When it comes to the British TV Choice Awards, fashion-wise it’s usually a bit of a cringey affair (there’s not much you can say about Gail from Corrie’s wrap dress from Per Una) but yesterday there was one actress there that shone through for us: Doctor Who star Karen Gillan, who plays Matt Smith’s sexy assistant in the show.
We’ve been a fan of Karen’s style for a while because we like the way she mixes cool, tomboyish style with ultra-girly feminine twists, like yesterday where the clever girl teamed a crystal-encrusted peach shift dress with some simple, grungy jewellery, dark makeup and some mens-style patent loafers. She’s doing it Alexa Chung style, and we think she can pull it off.
We tried and tried in vain to find a replica of Karen’s dress on the high street, but we did find a very sweet nude-coloured tea dress from Topshop with the same girly, playful vibe as the actress’ and teamed it up with some uber-sparkly River Island jewellery to give the outfit the same sparkle. We’ve also found the perfect pair of patent women’s loafers too, on the Kurt Geiger site. Aren’t we good to you?

London-based shopping junkies will be happy to hear that there’s a new outlet for your addiction opening today, as the Westfield shopping centre in Stratford finally opened it’s doors today with plenty of fanfare.
Boris Johnson was there (bless him) wearing his trademark crooked tie and blonde thatch of hair, but that’s all we can pass comment on about our Mayor’s style – the less said the better really. More dynamically dressed was Nicole Sherzinger, who put on an incredibly energetic and raunchy performance in a fetish-look black and red PVC coat with fringed sleeves, which she later changed out of in exchange for a sexy black pencil dress.
Pixie Geldof was there for the proceedings alongside Channel 4′s Nick Grimshaw – Pixie looked cute and cool with white-blonde corkscrew curls and a simple black and white polka dot dress with scarily high court heels. Kelly Brook was also there looking very sunkissed and sexy in a black and gold mini-dress to show off the golden glow of her post-summer legs. Cow.
The Westfield shop is going to be absolutely ginormous, with apparently over 300 shops opening there and over 70 restaurants. I think I might get down there myself right now..

High Street Fashion Week has gone off with a big, sparkly, ticker-tape rainbow bang as the beginning of the week’s celebration of fashion’s best high street stores was ushered in with circus performers and models scaling the sides of buildings in the latest fashions. We’d never thought that abseiling and stilettos would ever go hand-in-hand but hey, we love to be surprised.
High Street Fashion Week, which honours our much-beloved British high street in a week-long slew of fashion parties, meet and greets and sales, takes place in the shopping mecca which is Oxford Circus and will continue until Friday.
Today kicks off with an absolute monster sale in the Debenhams department store with 25% off in ALL THE DEPARTMENTS. AND IT’LL LAST ALL WEEK. There’s also a 10% discount at the Oxford Circus Benetton store when you spend £50 – it’s time to max out your store card, girls. Meanwhile, fashion sightseers should head on over to the John Lewis where they’re housing Osman Yousefzada’s latest collection.
One of the other good things about the High Street Fashion Week is their sensational giveaway prizes and competitions, which will be going on all week. If you want to channel your inner world traveller, enter the competition to get your mitts on this elegant gold chakra bracelet (pictured above left), which as well as being boho-chic is supposed to make the wearer “articulate, resonant of voice, a good listener and thrive on creativity”. There was some speculation over the past few weeks whether or not the much-loved Notting Hill Carnival would be cancelled this year because of the recent riots across the UK – but we are so glad they went ahead with it. Besides the fact that to cancel Carnival would be punishment for everyone over the actions of a small few, it’s also an incredible, creative event that brings Londoners together.
As a lover of the theatrical, I’ve always been secretly a little bit obsessed with the carnival’s explosion of feathers, sparkles, colour and gem-encrusted detailing – it appeals to my taste in all things OTT. One group of carnival-goers stomped the streets of West London in sizzling red, orange and yellow feathers with contrasting blue beaded details on their head-dresses while another group wore lime green and hot pink bodysuits instead. There’s one thing to be sure about – there’s no time to be shy and retiring at Notting Hill Carnival.

Whether you watched the VMAs on Saturday night or not, it’s always fun to have a peep at what the stars wore to one of the USA’s biggest A-list events.
Katy Perry, who came away smiling like the cat got the cream with three awards, went through more than one outfit change but our absolute favourite quirky Katy look for the night has to be the girlish Eastern-style powder blue chinoise dress, which looked cute and cartoonish with her pink hair and a matching pastel-coloured parasol.
As we all now know, Beyonce glowed with new-baby happiness all the way down the red carpet in a sizzling one-shouldered, draped orange maxi with her hair swept to one side, vintage-style. We loved her chandelier earrings too – pure 70s Halston glamour. Meanwhile, our favourite home-grown talent Adele also rocked a look from a different decade as she went for a clinging black midi-dress with huge 60s hair and makeup. Perfect.
Katie Holmes sassed it out on the red carpet with expertly teased waves and a black lace skater dress and tan suede wedge boots, while poor old Jessie J still looked sexy and upbeat despite her crutches in a jewelled black corset-body and a pair of white jewelled Bebaroque tights.

We’ve had our eye on “Bridesmaids” actress Rose Byrne for a while now, but we just loved her outfit she was papped in yesterday for an appearance on the “Late Show” that we had to do a piece on it.
The whole thing is just so chic and genius – the dark jewel colours of the leopard print are a modern update of a sexy classic, but the neat shift shape of the dress show off her tiny frame and keep the look from being OTT. Because the dress is such a statement, Rose cleverly went for simple and classic accessories, matching the black leather of her skinny belt that cinches in her waist to her black patent heels.
We’re a huge fan of dainty, understated jewellery right now, so it was nice to see Rose trying out the trend with a simple and delicate gold pendant. When we were looking for pieces to replicate Rose’s look we came across an amazing Egyptian-inspired gold pendant from Asos, which you can see in the gallery above.

Kim Kardashian’s lavish wedding party on Saturday had to be cut short because of complaints from the neighbours.
The party was supposed to go on until 4AM, but a pesky old fire marshal turned up at midnight and ordered the music to be stopped following phone calls of complaints from those who lived nearby.
A source told the New York Post newspaper: “Around midnight DJ Cassidy, who had been spinning for an hour, was ordered to shut down because the neighbours were complaining about the volume of the music. The neighbours didn’t come over, but they called the police. Kim took the news OK and seemed relaxed about it, but her sister Khloe was pretty upset.”
Besides the inconvenient early closing of the party, the wedding was apparently a great success. Ryan Seacrest tweeted after the celebrations: “Beautiful … Kim looked regal, a perfect night. I just danced w the whole family. (sic)”.
The celebrity guests included Avril Lavigne, Lindsay Lohan, Eva Longoria and Demi Lovato. Meanwhile, the newly wed Kim was spotted on Sunday morning coming out of her hotel with her new hubby wearing a new Juicy Couture tracksuit with the words “Mrs Humphries” on the front. Well, we suppose it’s one way of letting the world know.

With all this kerfuffle and fuss over London Fashion Week going on, we nearly forgot that it’s boho-queen Nicole Richie’s 29th birthday today. Sorry Nicole! We remembered just in time though.
LA’s favourite socialite and fashion designer has dramatically turned her life around since her 2006 health scares, when that famous bikini shot had everybody convinced that she was suffering from a severe eating disorder. A few years on and two pregnancies later with her boo Joel Madden, Nicole is looking healthier, happier and her House of Harlow 1960 jewellery line is loved by such big names as Madonna and Ashlee Simpson.
Not to mention that the girl’s got style. If it wasn’t for Nicole, would 1970s style have come back in quite the way it did? Queen of the maxi-dress and long, chocolatey bangs, she’s got that laid-back California-girl style that we all want to get (but sadly will never be as glamorous when you’re wearing it out and about in Staines). She’s pioneered some of the biggest trends over the last few years. Skinny jeans? Check. Oversized sunnies? Check. “It” handbag? Check.
In every major trend that’s come about in the last few years, Nicole’s been one of the first to get to the front line and show us how it’s done. After "The Simple Life", Nicole ditched the stripy hair and dungarees, lost a serious amount of weight and struck up a friendship with famous LA stylist Rachel Zoe. And so, Nicole's trademark hippy-luxe style is born.
Not content with making us spend our hard earned cash keeping us up all night thinking about all it’s latest styles, Topshop is now moving into the mini-festival space.
The highstreet clothing heaven is putting on a range of events called the “Topshop Bandstand Picnics”, which will play host to a range of top bands, sports day games and make-overs.
However, we’ll let it off for once again making us part with our cash as these events are for charity and being held in conjunction with the Teenage Cancer Trust.
The events, which will take place throughout June in London, Bristol, Liverpool and Birmingham, will be presented by T4′s Jameela Jamil and Miquita Oliver, the first event takes place on 12 June in London’s Regent’s Park and as well as listen to music you’ll also be able to buy fun cakes from Lola’s cupcakes and one-off Topshop rain ponchos. And the more you buy the more money that will be raised for charity.
Grab your blanket and head down to one of the events. After all, it’s for a good cause.
