With the Fall 09 Fashion Weeks passing in a flash and awards season firmly behind us, it’s time to talk 2009 trends. Who better to discuss it with than fashion expert and frequent contributor to every fashion television show and segment you can name – James Aguiar.
This past fashion week Aguiar was in the tents for www.tonic.com focusing on eco-friendly fashions. We asked him how the green movement has progressed for Fall 09.
“More designers are concerned with going green by using organic fabrics and keeping manufacturing close to home,” he said. “Also, less fur has been a trend for a long time replaced by the most luxurious knitwear we have seen in seasons.”
The Carmen Marc Valvo cocktail party Wednesday night was fabulous, of course, but the clothes were still the stars studded around the room on mannequins both live and artificial. It was all red-carpet-worthy eveningwear – maybe we’ll see a piece on Sunday? A video presentation was playing throughout the evening, which you can watch here. Plus check out our gallery below, including a snap of Carmen!
Unlike the Barbie girls, these ’20s-inspired dollies were dropped on some God-forsaken playground in the ’80s and have been resuscitated a little worse for the wear to stomp the Diesel Black Gold runway.
Behnaz Sarafpour put out a tight collection of what she’s best at for Fall 09, which is probably what many consumers are looking for right now. Pieces that exemplify a designer and will hold a special place in their wardrobes, as many of Sarafpour’s clean, geometric dresses would do for day, and pretty little velvet dresses would do for night.
And thanks to Fashionista for clearing up why I was a lot late for the show when I thought crosstown traffic had made me only a little late – the invite I went off of said 2:30 while the official schedule said 2:00. I literally saw the show going on as I dashed past the windows of Exit Art to see the second half from practically the doorway. But it was actually an excellent vantage point for a video of the models’ final pass.
Badgley Mischka’s Fall 2009 collection embraced more of the traditional darker colors for fall and winter with blacks, bordeaux and ultramarine with some bright crimson and teal pieces thrown in for good measure. Eveningwear was featured prominently and accented with some fabulous accessories. We were backstage before the show getting an up-close look at the shoes and jewelry that really helped Badgley Mischka’s designs sparkle.
Everyone loves a bit of Eighties rock ‘n’ roll and that’s why we *heart* Miss Sixty. The front row was adorned with young starlets including Mischa Barton, Kristen Bell and Minka Kelly – which gave you enough of a hint at who this line is targeting. Models thumped down the runway in shoulder pads (yup, really!), magazine-print jumpsuits, tough leather jackets, and too-tight-for-words acid wash jeans. Leggings were virtually painted on the models’ legs in loud prints and for a bit of warmth they were matched with fluffy wraps and coats. But keep your eyes peeled for the shoulder pads – srsly!
Max Azria went somber and sophisticated with his BCBG line for fall 2009. While there was lots of eveningwear, it wasn’t really the stuff that dance and bar night dresses are made of – BCBG’s usual niche. Beautiful draped velvets and modern silhouettes seemed made for an older customer than BCBG usually designs for. Perhaps Azria’s plan is to shift BCBG a bit upmarket and hold onto the girls who wore the line in their younger days to make room for BCBGeneration’s younger customer.
Unfortunately, her famous family (and their significant others) remains the best thing about Charlotte Ronson’s fashion line, as far as I can tell. Samantha Ronson and Lindsay Lohan were on hand for the fall 09 collection, as were Mark Ronson and The Like drummer Tennessee Thomas. The clothing was sort of amateurish styling of Marc Jacobs parodies. I did like the floral print used, and the floral shirt dress after the jump was one of the pieces I enjoyed from the show.
My favorite was Carmen Marc Valvo’s dress, too bad Katie Couric puts on such an annoying show of “OMG, like I can’t believe I’m DOING THIS! I’m a serious journalist!” Yeah, right. Joining Ms. Couric were Jenni Garth in Badgley Mischka, Brittany Snow in Marchesa and Tori Spelling in Betsey Johnson, among others.

Fall 09 New York Fashion Week is here! We’re excited, and we hope you are too. The first show on the official schedule is happening right now – The Heart Red Truth’s Red Dress Collection – and we’ll have pictures for you asap. For some stray fashion week gossip/observations, keep reading.
While many designers are scaling back their fashion week presentations, Oscar de la Renta will be showing twice this season.
“[2008] has a been good year for me,” the designer told The Daily last month. “While some businesses faced tough times, I actually added 15 employees to my company. Sales-wise, the last three months have been solid for us.”
Like Calvin Klein, de la Renta will put on one fashion show for the press, the other for retailers. The shows are slated for 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesday February 18.
Vera, DKNY and J. Mendel are all pretty much confirmed out for New York Fashion Week in the tents, with more designers announcing smaller presentations in showrooms and other venues every week.
But who’s actually showing in the tents? Anyone? Yes. IMG has finally released a partial list of designers for Mercedez Benz Fashion Week. Click through for the list.
