Celebrities and fashion luvvies may be clearing out of London as LFW comes to an extragant, air-kissing close, but the party isn’t over yet – Milan Fashion Week is here and we get to have a peek at what the most luxurious fashion houses have in store for us next S/S.
It seemed fitting that Gucci’s S/S collection should be first down the runway for the Milan leg of Fashion Week; NYFW was about edgy, understated grunge, LFW was about British quirkiness and having a bit of fun, but Milan is all about over-the-top European glamour and luxury. Gucci top dog Frida Giannini promised everybody “sophisticated seduction” for the SS2011 line, and seductive it was.
From the first outfit on the runway, the collection was screaming “MONEY MONEY MONEY!!! WEALTH!!!!!” in a practically edible mix of slippery, jewel-coloured silks with chunky gold accessories and some serious power-tailoring. All the models needed were some big floppy hats and a rich elderly Russian on their arm and they could have been walking down a port in St Tropez to get back on their yachts. Golds and camel tones, this season’s “it” colour, were also heavily present in the form of super-embellished and fringed little dresses and blouses, as was plenty of vampy black leather that wouldn’t have looked out of place on an Italian dominatrix.Very dramatic, very luxe and very, very Milan. Ooer, I’ve come over all Italian all of a sudden. As for the finale dress… well, check the gallery.

The annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show kicked off on Saturday starring a host of angel-winged supermodels at the newly renovated Fontainebleau Miami Beach. VS veteran Heidi Klum led the glamorous event which included Miranda Kerr, Karolina Kurkova, Marisa Miller, Doutzen Kroes, Selita Ebanks and Marks & Spencer face Noemie Lenoir. Adriana Lima wowed in a $5 million Black Diamond Fantasy Miracle Bra, encrusted with rubies and black and white diamonds, designed by jeweller Martin Katz. While Brazilian model Alessandra Ambrosio returned to the catwalk after giving birth just three months ago! She shed an unbelievable 45 pounds to be able to squeeze into the skimpy lingerie and swimwear. Check out all the glitz via our photo gallery.

When a designer takes her bow looking just as amazing as the model wearing the same creation as her, you know the clothes are going to sell. Monique Lhuillier constantly delivers reliably commercial, chic and romantic eveningwear, and this season she’s pulled out all the stops with brocades, silks and yards and yards of tulle. If you love a bit of glamour, you’ll be in heaven with this collection.
The spring 2009 Tuleh show was a real treat. Held at Martha Stewart’s offices, that venerable lady was present along with plenty of Voguers and society boldfaced names. But no matter the typeface, prints were the story here. Sometimes romantic, sometimes funky – especially in the combinations.
Video’s are so much better from the front row! Take a look at mine above. Also, I took so many pictures, I had to create a gallery.

Ten students from San Fran’s School of Fashion at Academy of Art University, presented yesterday at New York Fashion Week. But, two A+ ladies and a gent from this show stared the daunting white Bryant Park tents in the face and had fun with fashion.

Left to right, top to bottom: Two looks from the runway show, Victorya Hong and Christian Siriano, from this season of Project Runway, Jack Mackenroth, also from this season, Victorya, and stylist David Evangelista, Christian and Elisa Jimenez, also from this season, a makeup artist backstage, and Jay McCarroll, legendary winner of season one.)
All the antics from Project Runway contestants past and present captured here make me wish I hadn’t had to hightail it back to Bryant Park for one more show at the close of Victorya Hong’s presentation. But I stayed focused then, and that’s what I’ll do here – on to the fashion!
After flipping through Victorya’s past designs on Project Runway, I realized two things. It’s incredible that she lasted as long as she did, and tonight’s runway show was leaps and bounds beyond anything she ever showed the PR judges. The construnction, and particularly the fit, were much more sophisticated on Victorya’s runway. Clearly she is not the sort of designer that is inspired by wacky challenges and incredible time constraints, she spreads her wings when she has time and a clear vision.

After Fendi’s fashion show on the Great Wall of China, it seems like designers are clamoring for bigger, more exotic locales to present their collections. Like Pierre Cardin, who staged his latest show on the Gobi Desert. “I’ve been on a lot of voyages,” Cardin told WWD. “But this one was very special for me. The light and the emptiness and the color of the sand against the blue sky — it was like showing fashion on the edge of infinity.” The show was concieved as a prelude to a musical production for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing which Chinese officials have invited Cardin to stage. We can’t wait to see how his design aesthetic influences that spectacular show.
