New York Fashion Week S/S 2009: Proenza Schouler

By Gemma on September 9th, 2008

proenza_schouler1.jpg

Remember when Marc Jacobs showed that insane collection of Stepford-Wives-gone-Amy-Winehouse floral dresses and see-through trousers two hours late and sent the world of fashion into a headspin? This is Proenza Schouler’s version of that. With more money to throw into their collection this season, risks were taken where the boys have previously played safe. The result was a mixed show of everything from 80s jumpsuits to slinky silk dresses.

There were some stunners, but there was also a leather crop top…

The MTV VMA’s 2009: Britney Spears is back on form

By Gemma on September 8th, 2008

britneyvma2008.jpgMTV always inconveniently hold their annual Video Music Awards at the same time as Fashion Week. How much red carpet glamour can a fashionista take when the catwalks are already taking up all of her time?

Luckily, this year it was all about one person…Britney Spears. After her car crash performance of ‘Gimme More’ during her last VMA appearance, the former teen queen had a lot to prove. And prove it she did. Though she didn’t perform this year, she did take part in a skit and show up in a sparkling silver Atelier Versace dress (with decent hair extensions for once) that reminded us of the ‘old’ Britney we all know and love.

One standing ovation and three wins later, it looked like her crown was firmly back in place.

New York Fashion Week S/S 2009: Diane Von Furstenberg

By Gemma on September 8th, 2008

Before fashion week began, I predicted that luxe hippy would reign, and it looks like Diane Von Furstenberg and her creative director Nathan Jenden have gone and proven me correct. The Diane Von Furstenberg collection for S/S 2009 is based on the designer and her friends when they were in their twenties, and also pays homage to fashion icon Diane Vreeland, who taught us we could be “a little bit goddess, a little bit rock star.” Take a look at the vid for more…

What do you think of the new 90210 spin-off?

By Kimberley Foster on May 23rd, 2008

Reading this piece by the Fug Girls today regarding the new 90210 spin-off gave me a giggle. Someone over at CW has leaked a promotional video of the new television series and what you’re about to witness, I am afraid to say, is pretty average. I am inclined to agree with the Fugsters that what was once our favourite after-school teen soap, has now been ‘updated’ to a poor man’s version of Gossip Girl. The original 90210 broke trends in fashion (albeit bad ones, but we obsessed about them nonetheless). With this new lot, I can’t see anything particularly new or inspired fashion-wise, or remotely intriguing plot-wise. I hate to say it, but sometimes it’s often best to leave the past exactly where it stands… in the past.

YouTube Watch: Preview of Stacy London’s “Fashionably Late” with Rebecca Romijn

By Andrea Thatcher on November 19th, 2007

On this preview on YouTube for “Fashionably Late,” Stacy London gabs with Rebecca Romijn about how Rebecca balances her busy life while keeping up on the latest fashions. Rebecca admits that she was obsessed with fashion for a while, but has since learned to not focus on it too much. Stacy shows a picture of Rebecca at one of her movie premieres dressed in jeans with a Juicy Couture vest and white vintage blouse–she looks very put together in an easy ensemble. Rebecca put this outfit together herself saying she was going for a chic, but casual look for a day premiere, and suggests sifting through your closet for vintage clothes that are now back in style. Be sure to check out “Fashionably Late” on Friday, November 23rd at 10 p.m. ET.

UGGs get a fashion makeover this winter

By Andrea Thatcher on November 5th, 2007

uggsandra.jpg

If you just can’t fathom the idea of sporting a pair of UGGs with your latest outfit, you may want to reconsider your abstinence from this Australian brand that many fashionistas have deemed simply ugg-ly. UGGs boots are putting a fashionable step froward this winter with unique collage styles in suede, leather, and somewhat attractive styles.

Take the UGG Australia Sandra Wedge Boot, $325, for instance. This one features antiqued dark chocolate suede and leather, trimmed with genuine sheepskin cuffs and plenty of lining. A 3″ wedge heel ensures you’ll enjoy height benefits while trekking over snowbanks, and UGGs even encourages you wear it barefoot to make the most of the moisture-wicking micro pile lining. This one easily pairs up with the season’s leggings and skinny pants, without compromising on style.

So my bra is showing, wanna make something of it?

By Andrea Thatcher on October 26th, 2007

Louis%20Vuitton.jpg

Apparently the New York Times does, since they ran an article on underwear as outerwear in the Style section. This may seem like old news but the Times’ take is that visible lingerie has gone from acceptable and fashion forward in certain circles to “display pieces” for the general public. The article’s art seems to focus on runways as the highjackers of our mode morals. Personally, I don’t think the look at left, from the Louis Vuitton Spring 2008 runway, is what we need to be worried about, risque-wise. I’m more worried about the high school girls idolizing Paris Hilton, who wears full-on garters as clothes to parties as of late. But then, I resisted the visible bra strap trend of the 90′s when I was in high school and have continued on to a somewhat conservative approach to style. What do you think? How far do you go with your suggestive style?

Black patent leather is the easiest way to dress up and dazzle, and whether you choose a tote, bowler, or oversized clutch, Stella McCartney offers us a few distinct designs to keep us in line with the season’s trends.
