Style spotlight: Mrs Paul McCartney, otherwise known as Nancy Shevell

By Andrea Petrou on October 12th, 2011

Nancy Shevell has become one to watch in the fashion world following her wedding to one of the world’s most eligible bachelors.
The heiress who tied the knot with Sir Paul McCartney in a 40s style white frock designed by Stella McCartney, has caught the style crews eye thanks to her classic style.
Unlike many a superstar’s wife Nancy opts for understated chic. She’s a huge fan of the classic shift dress, which she dresses up with embellishments for a night out, while velvet is also a regular is her wardrobe.
However, she’s also a fan of the vintage trend, often spotted in a range of 60s and 40s pieces.

We’re sure with style like this she gets on very well with her designer step daughter.

Kate Middleton turns down opportunity to appear in US Vogue

By Andrea Petrou on October 10th, 2011

Britain’s Duchess Catherine has reportedly turned down an opportunity to appear on the front cover of US Vogue.

The 29-year-old royal – who married Prince William in April – was asked by the prestigious magazine’s editor Anna Wintour to appear in a spread but has declined the offer because she doesn’t want to be seen as a fashion icon.

A source told E! News: “Both William and Kate feel it would be wrong for Kate to promote herself as a fashion or style icon. That’s not what they are about and they take their royal duties far too seriously for that.”

Catherine was also said to be wary of upsetting William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, as she knows the monarch wouldn’t have been too keen on the idea.

The source continued: “Kate is keenly conscious that while her new grandmother-in-law may not chide her for appearing on a Vogue cover. But she would definitely not be amused, and Her Majesty is a real genius at making people squirm with simply a look or a ‘tut, tut.’

“To be brutally honest, a request to sit down with The Times, the BBC or one of the major American networks to discuss the monarchy in general is one thing. For Kate to be photographed draped in the latest creation of a couture house to, knowingly or otherwise, self-promote her status as some sort of fashion horse is something quite different.”

Salma Hayek says dresses are easier to style and gets praise from Demi Moore

By Andrea Petrou on October 10th, 2011

Salma Hayek: actress and creator of Nuance perfume range

Salma Hayek says dresses always make her look good quickly.

The 45-year-old actress was praised for her sense of style by good friend Demi Moore, but the ‘Puss in Boots’ star told her pal she finds it easier to pick out one garment rather than put together a whole outfit.

She said: “I was having dinner with my friend Demi – yes, that one – and she said, ‘Oh, my God! Every time I see you, you are so put together!’ And I told her it’s a lot easier to grab a fabulous little dress than to put together a whole casual outfit with jeans, a top, the right jacket, and great shoes. You slip on a dress and you can’t go wrong.”

Salma – who has a four-year-old daughter Valentina with husband Francois-Henri Pinault – also admitted that if she is in a bad mood, she heads to a beauty salon or goes shopping for new products.

She told Redbook magazine: “Get a pedicure, and if that isn’t working, go get a wax job! Sometimes a new lipstick just helps. Beauty products always cheer me up and give me hope. If it makes you feel pretty, why not?”

Opinion: How Steve Jobs made gadgets fashionable and stylish

By Andrea Petrou on October 6th, 2011

Apple's Steve Jobs who died Wednesday October 5th. He did more than any other person to make technology stylish and sexy

If you’d told us forty years ago that technology would be stylish and a fashion must-have then we would have laughed.

After all, us ladies were far more interested in the latest dress than we were the geeky cassette player or computer. Even when the mobile phone hit in the 80s and became a must have for yuppies, we still weren’t convinced.

Yes it was a sign that you had hit your work peak but come on, not only was it ugly it wouldn’t have fit into that handbag. And putting it in our trouser pockets- if they were the size of sacks- would have probably left us flashing a little bit more than we wanted to thanks to the sheer weight of the thing.

Technology was geeky and clunky and something we wouldn’t even consider lusting over. Then something began to change.

Suddenly the boring clunky PC, which back in the 70s was for hobbyists, had a rival in the shape of a rainbow Apple logo bearing device. Yes it was still a geeky machine but there was something about the sleeker design that made us take notice and think that if we had to use a computer it was this one we wanted.

Not only did it look good but it was easier to use. And it wasn’t just us who had fallen for the tempting Apple with the logo becoming synonymous and a regular resident in popular chic arty and creative offices.

The brainchild behind this new stylish company was of course Steve Jobs, a man who made technology, not to fit in with our current needs, but to make us want what he made.
And make us want, he did. With the help of Senior Vice President of Industrial Design Jonathan Ives, the pair got to work making portable technology that we had to keep out of our handbags and this time it wasn’t because they were too big and clunky but because we wanted the world to see we had an Apple product.

In came the iPod and suddenly our personal cassette players and that mix tape from that special person went out the window. We didn’t care that our other halves had sweated over picking those songs, and suddenly forgot how we sworn we’d never lose that cassette, all we could think about was how to get our new love – the shiny iPod that everyone who was anyone had. In fact we’d go so far as saying we would have swapped that other half just to ensure we had that new gadget in our handbags.

And so it had begun. The more products Steve Jobs and co bought out the more we wanted, after all you weren’t a fashion gal without the latest iPod. And then came the shiny iPhone, a product right up there with, dare we say it, the Mulberry bag, sleek, touchscreen and the with the opportunity of an app store, it was every fashionistas’ dream.

The need to have one of these was more than when we wanted that Nokia phone with the interchangeable covers when we were 12. And finally, after the celebrities and cool people had received theirs, we were able to get ours. Yes the hideously expensive monthly phone plan meant we wouldn’t be able to go out, but hey who needed to see their friends when we could call them with our new phone.

And of course businesses knew we were hooked, so hooked in fact that we’d buy that floral case, diamante number and anything that really made our phone stand out.

As for the iPad – yes, we did forgo those Christian Louboutins to get our hands on one of these….

Steve Jobs you succeeded in making the fashion world stand up and take note of technology. You made it stylish and sleek and for that you’ll always be remembered. RIP.

Blake Lively splits with Leonardo DiCaprio

By Andrea Petrou on October 5th, 2011

Leonardo DiCaprio and Blake Lively have split up.

The ‘Inception’ star had been dating the ‘Gossip Girl’ actress since May and although they have decided to part ways, representatives for both told UsMagazine.com they will “remain friends”.

Despite refusing to confirm their relationship in the five months they were dating, Leonardo, 35, and Blake, 24, were spotted on a string of dates throughout the summer including trips on a yacht in Disneyland, California, and a water taxi in Venice, Italy.

Leonardo also treated Blake to a helicopter ride to Saint-Paul de Vence, France for a $500 lunch at La Colombe d’Or Restaurant, a stay at the $5,000-a-night suite at Hotel de Paris and a trip on a $52 million yacht.

Blake even flew to Sydney, Australia in August to celebrate her birthday with the actor, who is shooting his new movie ‘The Great Gatsby’ in the city.

The couple enjoyed a meal at exclusive restaurant Aria and were seated at one of the eatery’s best tables which boasts a panoramic view of Sydney Harbour.

A source said: “[Blake] looked gorgeous and they looked very much like a couple. They seemed to be having a really nice time and were definitely enjoying the view.”

However, Blake spent last weekend in Boston where she enjoyed a romantic meal with ‘Green Lantern’ co-star Ryan Reynolds at sushi palace O Ya in the Leather District, the Boston Herald reported.

Glee star Lea Michele makes her own red carpet style

By Andrea Petrou on October 4th, 2011

Lea Michele never listens to fashion advice.

The Glee actress says she was told by the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, not to wear black for her first Golden Globe Awards but decided against his tip.

She told InStyle.com: “Ryan Murphy had told me, ‘Don’t wear black. You should never wear black. So my stylist pulled floral, beautiful colours.”

“As I’m walking to the bathroom to try them on, I see the Oscar [de la Renta] dress hanging up in her closet. I said ‘I’m wearing that.’ And I called Ryan, and said ‘Ryan, I’m wearing black!’ ”

However, it seems Ryan wasn’t upset about Lea not taking his advice as he recently praised her fashion choices.

He said: “When I met Lea, she was only sort of interested in clothes- but in the last two years she’s become a red-carpet star. I think what happened is Lea went to an event, and someone said, ‘Oh, you look pretty.’ It was an interesting moment for her.”

Fashion meets technology: LED light dresses as seen on Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Rihanna

By Andrea Petrou on October 4th, 2011

Although we love the latest trends over here at ShinyStyle, sometimes we like to cast our minds a little bit further afield. And today is one of those days.

After seeing X Factor’s Kitty wearing an LED light leotard during bootcamp we began to think about how this technology has firmly wormed its way into the fashion world.

Most of this can be blamed on Katy Perry who kicked started this look way back in 2009 when she wore a purple frock complete with LED light detailing from designers Cute Circuit. She has since been spotted in a range of these at events ranging from premieres to the MET Gala.

And her style choice has filtered down to other celebrities. Queen of quirk Lady Gaga opted for an LED light outfit for her tour, while Katy’s BFF Rihanna took a leaf out of her style book and was spotted in a black and red LED frock during her concert.
And its not just the celebrity world that’s gone mad over this trend with the likes of Atton Conrad and Hussein Chalayan also opting for this look for part of their catwalk collections.
Will you be wearing this style? View the gallery and let us know by leaving your comments below.

Kate Bosworth has an “effortless approach” to style says her stylist

By Andrea Petrou on October 4th, 2011

Kate Bosworth has an “effortless approach” to fashion.

The stunning actress is often voted one of the world’s best-dressed women and her stylist, Cher Coulter, believes it’s because she has fun with what she wears and is willing to be risky.

Cher told People: “She’s got this effortless approach to style, and never overdoes it. She’s also fun and fashionable and willing to take risks. She’s simple, chic and always looks happy in what she’s wearing.”
Cher also says Kate can look good in both casual and smart clothes because she has the face and body to carry it off.

She said: “We like to get creative with current trends, but Kate has to feel good and comfortable.

“Kate loves denim because it’s easy and casual. She always wears denim to remain comfy while running around town. On the flip side, she also loves to dress up denim by pairing it with a silky button-up and a necklace slung just under the shirt collar. Kate’s a chameleon – she can wear anything!”

Carla Bruni praises Emmanuelle Alt’s “feminine” look

By emilyborrett on August 31st, 2011

The French first lady of style, Carla Bruni, has praised her old friend and new editor of French Vogue Emmanuelle Alt for her femininity.

Carla and Emmanuelle have been firm friends since their teens – but while Carla’s look has matured, she insists that her good friend Emmanuelle is still as girlish as ever thanks to her refusal to succumb to plastic surgery and heavy makeup.

Carla said about the Vogue editor: “There is still something of a teenager about her. Emmanuelle has an unaffected way to be feminine. She doesn’t wear make-up and hasn’t had surgery.”

Emmanuelle Alt has taken the helm at French Vogue after Carine Roitfeld’s reign as editor recently ended. As a well-shod expert on the sartorial, Emmanuelle was the perfect candidate to take over at the iconic magazine – and Carla Bruni agrees, saying that the editor knows what French women want from fashion.

She told Vogue magazine: “She reflects how French women are feeling – simplicity is the state we all want to be in. We are tired of useless sophistication.”

Style spotlight: Vogue editor Anna Wintour

By Elisabeth on August 26th, 2011

US Vogue editor Anna Wintour has gained a reputation as the most influential person in fashion. But if you ask the woman in question herself she’d tell you she doesn’t see herself as a “powerful person”.

Speaking to Forbes Anna said: “”I don’t think of myself as a powerful person. You know, what does it mean? It means you get a better seat in a restaurant or tickets to a screening or whatever it may be. But it is a wonderful opportunity to be able to help others, and for that I’m extremely grateful.”

You say that Anna, yet the stories that you’re able to make or break someone’s design career with just a flick of those well-manicured nails of yours tell us otherwise. What do you think readers?

But what about Anna’s personal style? Let’s take a look at some of her sartorial choices over the years…
