Gallery: Fantastical costumes at Notting Hill Carnival

Notting Hill Carnival 2011

There was some speculation over the past few weeks whether or not the much-loved Notting Hill Carnival would be cancelled this year because of the recent riots across the UK – but we are so glad they went ahead with it. Besides the fact that to cancel Carnival would be  punishment for everyone over the actions of a small few, it’s also an incredible, creative event that brings Londoners together.

As a lover of the theatrical, I’ve always been secretly a little bit obsessed with the carnival’s explosion of feathers, sparkles, colour and gem-encrusted detailing – it appeals to my taste in all things OTT. One group of carnival-goers stomped the streets of West London in sizzling red, orange and yellow feathers with contrasting blue beaded details on their head-dresses while another group wore lime green and hot pink bodysuits instead. There’s one thing to be sure about – there’s no time to be shy and retiring at Notting Hill Carnival.

Check out the gallery for some of the photographs taken from Notting Carnival, and try to get inspired. Maybe with a few more feathers and spangles in our daily lives, the world would be a better place.

Get the look: Ellie Goulding

By emilyborrett on August 8th, 2011

For a launch party at Selfridges, Ellie rejected the traditional cocktail dress for a vintage leather jacket with a prim high-necked blouse and hotpants that manages to be cool and sexy at the same time

Seeing the photos of Britain’s own Ellie Goulding performing at the legendary Lollapalooza Festival in the States made us swell up with national pride (which is hard to come by if you’ve been following the news in London for the past couple of days). We haven’t seen many British singers as young and fresh-faced as Ellie be so successful so quickly, so good on the girl.

Not only is the singer-songwriter super-talented but she’s got a sense of style that we really admire; she manages to fly the flag for quirky British style and nail the trends without looking too pretentious or try-hard at all. Whether she’s spotted slouching around London in a baggy T-shirt with skinny jeans or a dress for an awards ceremony, Ellie always pulls it off.

Check out the gallery above for our favourite looks of Ellie’s along with a few high-street pieces that you can use to replicate her style – we even found the actual top that she wore to Coachella this year. Don’t say we’re not good to you.

Kate Moss’ wedding to Jamie Hince will be like a “small festival”.

By Andrea Petrou on May 9th, 2011

Kate Moss’ wedding to Jamie Hince will be like a “small festival”.

The supermodel – who is set to marry The Kills rocker in a ceremony in Oxfordshire, South East England, on July 2 – is planning for her nuptials to last for days and has spared “no expense” in preparing for the ceremony and celebrations.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “Kate wants it to be a party to remember and like a small festival.

“She doesn’t want her guests to leave for days so she’s making sure there I plenty of food and entertainment. It’s a no-expense spared do – thought most of her budget will probably go on alcohol.”

However, the 37-year-old catwalk beauty has had to change some of her plans as the original church in Budford where she wanted to get wed is not big enough to fit in all of her guests.

Three bands are to play at the reception to be held at her Oxfordshire home, while additional music will be provided by DJ Kevin O’Leary.

Kate’s hen party is expected to be held next month at the Isle of Wight Festival, which is being headlined by the Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters and Kasabian.

Competition: Win two tickets to Farm Festival

By Elaine LaPersonerie on July 23rd, 2010

farm festival.jpgFor those of you who’ve been bitterly weeping into your unworn wellies this summer, cursing all your friends who’ve had the cash to swan off to all the biggest festivals such as Glastonbury, there’s still time for you to get a taste of festival life.

Farm Festival, the two-day event set in a farm -yes, a farm – in Bruton, Somerset, is an intimate event that will probably end up the most fun you’ve ever had in your life, ever. This year is going to be my first time (how poignant) but I’m friends of FF veterans who go every year and love it. The line-up is featuring such fun, danceable bands as Wild Palms, The Electric and Egyptian Hip Hop, whilst in the day time there’s going to be childish delights such as Punch and Judy, Arts and Crafts and face painting. Like a retro primary-school summer fete, but with cider and dancing.

I should also warn those interested in going now that there is a very important rule that must be adhered to, and that’s wearing a hat. Hats are compulsory, and the crazier the better – the best hat-wearers will be awarded prizes at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on Sunday.

Sounds kind of cool, right? Tickets are a snip at £35 each (that’s with free camping, yay) and can be bought on WeGotTickets.com. However, if you’re a bit skint but still want to go, the lovely makers of Farmfestival have kindly donated two tickets for you and a friend to be won in an online raffle organised by Topman. All you have to do is click here and follow the simple instructions to enter.

For those of you that want to go, I’ll be there covering the festival for Shiny Style. So happy camping, and I’ll see you all next week.

Trend Alert: Top five biker boots

By Shiny writer on July 22nd, 2010

While I don’t want to wish the summer away, there’s no denying that the autumn season is fast approaching, and if you’re like me, you’ll be wanting to begin stocking up that autumn wardrobe.

Yes I know the highstreet is still full of summer stuff but there are a few items that you can begin collecting, which will form a staple part of next season’s clothing.

One such trend is the biker boot , which is undoubtedly the ideal footwear for transcending from your summer to autumn wardrobes. Buy them now and team them up with playsuits and statement jewellery, a la Pixie Lott for a casual summer and festival look. And when the weather cools down partner these must-haves with skinny jeans and chunky knits.

Here’s my top five.

Dressing to the max: the long and short of the maxi dress trend

By laurenbravo on July 4th, 2010

wenn2806326.jpgFor about the last five years or so, I have considered any skirt or dress that reaches as far as my knees to be deeply unflattering. Or at least, deeply unflattering on me. On other people they might be elegant, chic, sexy even. But on me, I instantly look like someone dressed as a mum for a school play.

Being top-heavy, my legs are my slimmest part and therefore the bit I want to get out at every opportunity. It deflects from my bulkier bits up top, like wearing a subtle sign that says, “Just so you know, I’m not built like a tank the whole way down.”

So I’ve spent a draughty five years pushing the boundaries of hemline decency. Every dress has been shortened, then shortened even more the next year. My tights have got more and more opaque to compensate, my heels lower and tops more voluminous to balance out the harlot potential. It has been a long work in progress, but finally I’ve found a look that works for me. Hurrah.

The snag, of course, is that saying you’ve “found a look that works for you” is waving a red flag to the fashion bull. It’s like when someone on Eastenders says, “this is going to be the best Christmas we’ve ever had.” As soon as the words leave your lips, a flashing alarm goes off somewhere thousands of miles away, in a big control room, where I like to picture Anna Wintour, Karl Lagerfeld and Alexa Chung all sitting round in massive leather chairs. “Lauren Bravo’s found a look that works for her!” They cry. “Quick, make fashion do the opposite!” And so, summer 2010 became the summer of the maxi dress.

Maxis have been creeping up (or down) on us for years, but up to now I’ve been able to ignore it, dismiss it as a micro trend that will never catch on because Brit girls like to flash the flesh too much. But not so, it seems. Everywhere you look this season, women are flapping about in acres of fabric. And, more distressing, most of them look good. They’re elegant, chic, sexy even.

There is a crucial ‘most’ in the above sentence, though, and that is the deceptive secret of the maxi – it DOESN’T WORK ON EVERYONE. For starters, they cover up a significant portion of our bodies, leaving us only with arms and décolletage on show. Which is great if arms and décolletage happen to be your best bits, but how many of us claim that? And how many of us, alternatively, spend entire August afternoons sweating it out in inappropriate jackets so that nobody sees our bingo wings?

Then there’s the maxi’s lack of shape. This can be a blessing – skimming over your hips and thighs, providing ample coverage for a belly full of fried calamari – or a curse – making you look like someone of indeterminate gender hiding in a shower curtain.

And then there’s the lack of accommodation for, um, ample chests. The vast majority of maxis come in two styles – ruched bandeau or triangle halterneck. Neither are friends to any bosom bigger than a C-cup, with the former looking a bit like two puppies in a sack, and the latter presenting the age old dilemma of cavernous cleavage vs wearing a prudish camisole underneath. And I do not approve of clothes than necessitate extra things worn underneath just to protect your modesty.

But don’t flee back to your underwriting quite yet, busty ladies! There is hope out there. Maxis like this one from Julien Macdonald or this New Look number give the well-endowed goddess and little more dignity. Urban Outfitters and Oasis even have a few with that all-too-rare feature in women’s dresses, SLEEVES.

There’s the length issue to contend with. Maxi propaganda states that long, wafty dresses can only be worn by long, wafty people; one of those hideously unfair fashion diatribes like ‘only skinny people can wear skinny belts’ (you notice there are no trends named ‘stout and dumpy’). But it’s a rule made for breaking. The secret to pulling off maxi as a shorter lady is picking your shape wisely and being nifty with a needle and thread if need be. Make sure it covers your ankles, but isn’t sweeping the floor, and fits properly up top so you don’t look swamped. Try to find something relatively slim-fit so that you’re not wallowing around in a paisley marquee, and if all else fails, crank up the heels.

But body issues aside, the real key to maxxing it up is deciding on your style. Are you a Grecian goddess (draping, chiffon, upswept hair), a prairie girl (broderie anglais, denim waistcoat, belt), or an urban hippie (straight jersey t-shirt maxi, minimalist sandals, iPhone)? Or will you, like me, be keeping a firm grip on your minis until Anna, Karl and Alexa come round to prise them out of your hands?

Glastonbury festival: Sienna Miller, Kate Moss and Alexa Chung dance the weekend away

By Andrea Petrou on June 28th, 2010

While festival goers danced the weekend away at Glastonbury the stars we’re also out in force enjoying the bands and showing off their festival fashion. And it seems denim shorts were the trend of the day. Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, Emma Watson and Sienna Miller all went for these denim lovelies teaming them up with shirts, ankle boots, and in Sienna’s case an on-trend Trilby hat.

An off duty Kate Nash and Channel 4 presenter Jameela Jamil took the short trend that step further opting for high waisted versions of these. Kate teamed hers up with a loud top, while Jameela went for a sleek black top and sun hat.

On-stage Florence Welch opted for a white leotard with one shoulder detail before changing into a flowing boho style frock to enjoy the rest of the day, while Shakira went for her statement casual look, opting for jeans and a plain top for her stage performance.

Billie Piper was also spotted in a tribal style maxi dress, while Pixie opted for a short black number, which she teamed up with knee high socks.

Cannes 2010: Celebs dress up for the Robin Hood premier

By Andrea Petrou on May 13th, 2010

It was the first day of of the 2010 Cannes festival yesterday and as we would expect stars turned out in their hundreds.

However unlike other premiers and awards events where A-listers dress up to the nines, this week long event takes a whole new different meaning on fab frocks.

At the Robin Hood premier, which took place at the event yesterday frocks were big and fabulous, and if we’re honest some really took our breath away. Kate Beckinsdale wowed in a blue frock while Kate Blanchett opted for black.

Take a look at our first Cannes 2010 gallery for the Robin Hood premier and tell us if you agree.

Gallery: Wellington boots to help you survive the snowy weather and keep your feet warm during those train delays

By Andrea Petrou on January 6th, 2010

With the snow hitting every part of Britain, getting out and about and into work could prove difficult, especially for those of us who face train cancellations and don’t have the right footwear. Soggy shoes and socks, are after all not a good start to a working day, once you finally get in, or if you just want to bring out your childlike side and start a snowball fight.

In this type of weather the only shoe that will get us through the day is either a snow or ski boot. However we assume many of you won’t want to fork out for these, so we’ve put together a gallery of the next best alternative, and that’s of course the trusty wellington boot.

Yes, we know, many of you haven’t seen one of these since you were a child, unless you were one of those girls who armed yourself with a pair for last years festivals, but these fantastic plastic and rubber shoes will do the job of keeping out that soggy snow, and there are many fashionable ones out there now. Buy a size bigger and double up on those socks for toasty toes.
