ShinyStyle loves: Fringed fashion

Jessie J wore a quirky lilac-fringed bodysuit for her performance at V Festival

If you’re sad that summer is pretty much over now and you’d like to cling on to your louche, festival-style outfits as much longer as possible, it’s worth taking note of the summer’s fringing trend which will happily still be wearable when winter comes. We spotted more than a couple of artists rocking the trend at V Festival over the weekend, as Jessie J wore a quirky eighties-inspired bodysuit with purple fringed sleeves for a dramatic take on dancewear and Katy B teamed black skinny jeans and a band T-shirt with her fringed black cardigan for a 70s hard rock look.

Wild West-influenced styles are huge for this Autumn/Winter, a look that fringing and tasselled pieces will fit into nicely. For wrapping up warm you could try Urban Outfitter’s amazing plaid hooded cape with tassels (checks and tartan are massive this season too) and team with a little dress and opaque tights for a snug and chic back-to-school look. Or if you want to go a bit more down the evening-wear route try a showgirl-style fringed dress like the amazingly sexy dip-dyed red one that we found at Rare – big earrings and some simple high-heeled sandals will make you look like a glamorous heiress.

Of course, if you’re tentative when it comes to the idea of head-to-toe fringing and can’t get the image of Dolly Parton out of your head, a simple fringed bag or accessory can add a touch of laidback bohemian cool to an outfit. We love ASOS’ black fringed hoop earrings – so Edie Sedgwick.

Check out the gallery for our favourite fringed pieces on the high street.

Rihanna showed off her shaggy new 70s brunette 'do with a sexy waist-tied deniim shirt and leather hot-pants

Was I the only person in the world to have not gone to V Festival this weekend? It’s certainly been the only thing anyone on my Facebook has been writing about anyway.

It looks like the line-up this year was absolutely amazing for pop-lovers, with the likes of Rihanna at the top of the billing. Ri-Ri herself was every bit the Bajan vision she normally is in a sexy tie-waist denim shirt and a pair of figure-hugging leather shorts. We couldn’t help noticing that her scarlet hair is gone all of a sudden in exchange for a shaggy, honey-brunette ‘do, which looks great but we’re unsure as to which we prefer..

Jessie J looked radiant and excited to be performing despite her broken leg in a mental Lets Get Physical style panelled bodysuit, with long lilac fringing trailing along the sleeves to compliment her new purple hair. Jessie wasn’t the only one to rock fringed outfits for the festival either, as Katy B performed in a cool black shredded jacket and Noisettes singer Shingai Shoniwa wore a scarlet bodysuit with fringed details..

The festival’s biggest fashion surprise, however, was N-Dubz’ Tulisa in a Jeremy Scott-style one-shouldered dress in a bold animal print. Long gone are the days of baby pink trackies onstage for our new favourite X Factor judge – Tulisa clearly knows that now is the time to have a little bit more fun with her look. Yabbadabbadoo!

Shiny loves independent festivals: Farm Festival 2011

By emilyborrett on August 15th, 2011

There were quirky decorations all over the festival, but I was particularly charmed by the beer tent which was adorned with old-fashioned umbrellas, bunting and antique lampshades

Anyone who’s been reading ShinyStyle for a while may remember last year’s post about Farm Festival, an intimate independently-run event in Somerset that marries anarchic creativity with a love for music and not taking yourself too seriously.I’m all for small, intimate events that celebrate creativity and aren’t all about draining your bank balance, so it holds a great lure for me. Farm Festival is one of my favourite events of the year, so naturally I had to come again. This post is a little late but hopefully some of you readers will read about my experience there and want to give it a try next year.

Again a lot of love and care had gone into the event, which was bigger and more inventive than last year. As soon as I’d unpacked and pitched my teepee (the easiest tent to put up ever, apparently, but it still perplexed me) I headed over to the beer tent with my friends to get a pint of Black Rat cider and was struck by the whimsical and charming decorations. The entire ceiling of the tent structure had been decorated with antique lampshades, upside-down umbrellas and school fete-style bunting trailing down the walls. Outside, each dustbin was lovingly hand-painted with patterns of flowers, leaping fish and abstract designs and curious wooden handpainted creatures and objects peeped out of the grass. It is quite a magical place which, thanks to the intimate size of the festival, you can learn like the back of your hand within a couple of hours.

On Saturday I was transported back to the 90s for the headlining act Dodgy, whose hit “Staying Out For The Summer” I’d completely forgotten about (I have pretty much mentally blocked out the 90s) but surprisingly could remember most of the words to. I am ashamed to admit that I didn’t spend nearly as much time this year checking out the live acts – but that was only because I was running around in their mysterious Lazer Cave tent and dutty winding in the Dubstep tent. I don’t even like dub that much but Farm Festival’s dub tent is probably one of the most fun places in the world, I’d regularly drive to Bruton to go.

As usual I hit the vintage stalls pretty sharpish with my boyfriend and friends to hunt for ridiculously OTT glitzy clothes to wear in the evening. The prices had gone up a little this year but so had the quality of the vintage, so it’s a fair trade off. I dithered for a long time between a white neon-printed pair of city shorts, an achingly beautiful pair of old men’s brogues and a gold brocade wedding dress – naturally in the end I chose the gold brocade dress, priced at £16, which I wore all weekend until I was told to take it off.

The hats were, again, quite spectacular. I saw a lot of boys cavorting with their T-shirts off wearing Viking horns and wolf hats (perhaps they think it justifies silly behaviour?) while the girls opted for romantic flower garlands, wide-brimmed straw hats and vintage pillbox hats. Also brilliant were the gallant face-painters, who did particularly excellent tiger facepaint and painted my face like a magic kitten for two pounds.

If you want to see for yourself a few snapshots of my FarmFest experience, check out the gallery above. It’s been a brilliant highlight of my summer.

Alexa Chung and Alex Turner call it a day on their four-year relationship

By emilyborrett on August 1st, 2011

Alexa and Alex in happier times back in 2008

It’s bad news for one of Britain’s coolest couples, as news has reached our ears that young fashion icon Alexa Chung and Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner have decided to end their much-publicised relationship.

We were surprised to hear this – we’ve always thought the couple seemed so solid – but reports have surfaced that the couple have been rowing recently and decided that enough was enough. It’s said to be a sad but happy split, as the pair say that they hope to stay friends.

Having said that, it’s hardly surprising that the two have drifted apart with their hectic schedules, as Alex is frequently on the road with his bands and Alexa has a full diary for the summer as she settles down to work in New York.

For the four years that they’ve been together, Alex and Alexa have been known as one of the UK’s coolest and most well-shod couples, appearing at pretty much every festival worth being seen at in his n’ hers festival fashion.

It’s sad news, but good luck to the couple – we don’t think that either of them will have much trouble finding love again once they’re ready to get back on the celebrity dating scene.

Shiny Style loves: Jewellery at RockNRose

Butterfly Headband

Here at ShinyStyle we’re all suckers for quirky, unusual accessories to add interest to a trusty old outfit. I’m especially a fan of vintage-inspired designs, which are having a bit of a revival at the moment, so it was great to finally check out the up-and-coming jewellery brand RockNRose today and see what their store is all about. What I found was a riotous and quite magical explosion of colour and shape which took inspiration from antiques and Victoriana to create a new, exciting jewellery brand. Pixie Lott and Peaches Geldof are already fans.

Especially exciting is their special collection of intricate headbands. If you’ve ever fancied a high-drama, quirky look like Anna Dello Russo or similar, this is the place to try it out, as RockNRose offers a pretty and theatrical array of fascinators. Our personal favourite is their much sought-after hummingbird headpiece, which is handpainted leather and gives a nod to this Autumn/Winter’s craft trends – wear it with a cocktail dress for a cool and exciting party look.

As well as their own vintage-inspired designs, they sell the real thing. Check out the Vintage section of their online store for specially sourced, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Have a peek at the gallery for our favourite bits and bobs from the RockNRose store – and girls, don’t buy everything at once!

Kate Moss is the ultimate festival style icon says Alice Temperley.

By Andrea Petrou on June 20th, 2011

Kate Moss is the ultimate festival style icon, according to Alice Temperley.

The British designer – who dressed Pippa Middleton for the royal wedding reception – believes the 37-year-old model always gets her music festival look right and maintains it is simple to achieve.

She told Vogue.co.uk: “Take really comfortable loose pieces that look effortless to wear. Converse are the perfect shoes, unless you need wellies, as they helps protect your feet if you tread on anything horrid – not too hot not too cold.

“A pair of sunglasses are a must and a good satchel or pouch bag that you can wear across your body with the few essentials – the smaller the better. Loose layers and a piece of cashmere so you don’t get caught short when the sun goes behind a cloud.”

Alice recently revealed how happy she was to work with Pippa on her dress for the wedding reception of Pippa’s sister Duchess Catherine and her husband Prince William.

She said: “I was delighted that Ms. Pippa Middleton asked us to design her dress for the royal wedding evening reception. Pippa is a beautiful young woman and a pleasure to work with. She looked incredible and the green looks great on her skin tone.”

A fun weekend at the farm: Crazy headgear at Farm Festival

By Elaine LaPersonerie on August 4th, 2010

Well, I went to Farm Festival, guys, and it was pretty cool.

As I arrived at Gilcombe Farm on Friday, I was instantly struck by Farm Festival’s unique charms – a fun, creative atmosphere that’s similar to one that you’d experience at Glasto, but for a fraction of the price. Balloons up to the rafters in the music tent, hand-painted artwork popping up all over the place – you could really feel the love that had gone into creating this event. Even the dustbins were individually decorated and painted.

Music favourites for the weekend were Chicago-based The Electric on Saturday night, who were all about really old-school rap and strong R & B vocals from their female vocalist, who really had a set of pipes on her. The ensemble is the new musical venture from rapper DJ Vadim – for an idea of how they sounded, you can check his stuff out on Spotify. The rap/vocals combination was a bit like N-Dubz, except really good and not embarrassing. Other bands such as Manchester-based dance darlings Egyptian Hip Hop and Wild Palms also put on a good show. The only hitch was trying to dance without spilling my cider.

There was also some pretty great shopping opportunities about; I spent a long time looking about the vintage clothing stalls with my boyfriend and friends. We picked up some great bargains. My friend picked up a vintage 1970s orange and gold jumpsuit (very Nicole Richie) for the meagre sum of seven quid, while I found a Missoni-style knitted tank top and oversized denim shirt for three pounds each. I would say Farm Festival was worth it for the vintage alone – unlike many shops in London, where you’d pay up to fifty or sixty pounds for one item, I couldn’t see anything priced over a tenner and the clothes were actually nice.

Similarly to the event’s creators, the festival-goers put an equal amount of love into their appearance – there were some dope hats in circulation this weekend. Hats were piled high with flowers, feathers, fruit and, in keeping with the farm theme, farm animals. My personal favourite was the woman we dubbed as “Sunflower Lady” (we didn’t realise she was actually meant to be a daffodil, but the nickname stuck), who donned a giant daffodil hat with a green dress. She was a beam of happiness on a quite grey Somerset weekend. Probably most notable for sheer effort were the family of dolphins at Gilcombe Farm – a group of fifteen-odd festivalers all tangled up in a giant blue fishing net together, each wearing their own dolphin hat/sculpture made out of tinfoil. They even walked like they were dolphins. The UK did us proud this weekend – all of Farm Fest, young and old, little and large, were turned out in headgear that Lady Gaga would be proud of.

Thanks for a good weekend, Farm Festival – I’ll see you next year.
