New York Fashion Week: Proenza Schouler S/S 2012

Proenza Schouler Spring/Summer 2012

Proenza Schouler may still be a relative fledgling label in the fashion industry, but, my god, they churn out incredible collections like they’ve been going for the last thirty years. Design duo Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez couldn’t be doing any better right now – and I am completely besotted with their new tiki Hawaii-inspired S/S 2012 collection.

The Spring/Summer line was deceptively austere at the beginning of the show, with neat waisted jackets in charcoal grey and prim little high collars, but look a little closer at the skirt and short suits and there was actually some cool, unusual tiger-print panelling. From a glance, a little bit drab – but get closer and it’s actually got a cheeky, subtle twist.

Dark muted tones soon gave way to crisp white tailored pieces and yellow florals. We especially loved their cute tie-waisted skirts in delicate blue and white prints with yellow floral overlay – so summery and playful that we want to hit the beach right away. There was a bit of a mesh between different eras – the Hawaiian-style prints reminded us of American summer holidays in the 1950s, while the super-sexy tiger-printed mini skirt-suits gave more than a nod and a growl to the power-bitch era of the 80s.

The 50s/80s era clash reared its head again in the collection when McCullough and Hernandez cleverly combined classic pin-up styles such as full-skirted sun-dresses and high-waisted beach shorts, but reworked the classic styles by making them in black and white PVC for a sleek, modern look. It might get a bit hot on the beach, but who cares if you’re lucky enough to be wearing a bit of Schouler?

All in all, it’s a really great, flirty collection that we can guarantee A-listers will be scrapping over very, very soon. To see our highlights of the Proenza Schouler Spring/Summer 2012 show, check out the gallery above. Surf’s up!

New York Fashion Week: Rodarte S/S 2012

Rodarte Spring/Summer 2012

Anyone who was lucky enough to be at the Rodarte show yesterday in NYC probably felt like they were in the presence of something amazing, as the Mulleavy sisters behind the label have produced what we think could be one of their finest, most beautiful and  moving collections to date. The front row was a sight to be seen as well, with every A-lister in the Big Apple vying for a seat – amongst others were the photographer Terry Richardson, Anna Wintour, the Fanning sisters and the fabulous Anna Dello Russo.

Even though I am writing about this collection from my box room in gloomy Hackney, when I saw the latest Rodarte pieces I was immediately transported back to dreamy, wistful feelings of summertime by their Van Gosh-inspired sunflower printed day-dresses and gowns. The models’ haunted faces and wispy blonde hair teamed with these dreamy sunflower dresses in delicate silks and chiffons had an ethereal Virgin Suicides vibe to me.

Colour was an incredibly key part of the Spring/Summer collection because the Mulleavy sisters had actually taken the colours from Van Gogh’s most famous paintings and re-crafted the concept into haunting, wearable fashion – pale, buttery yellows and dreamy sky blues shimmered on the catwalk amongst metallic brocade work and embroidery, gradually shifting into darker blues and purples to represent the swirling night sky of the painter’s Starry Night.

To me, the collection completely embodied the hazy, dreamy nostalgia of summers past with their fairy-tale creations. A very special creation indeed, that I think may end up being one of my favourites out of the whole season. Because how could it not?

Steal her style: Rachel Bilson’s Showtime TCA Party look

By emilyborrett on August 4th, 2011

Rachel Bilson's style shone through in these tapered red-pink trousers, with a slouchy floral shirt and contrasting leopard-print heels. She's still got it!

Rachel Bilson’s been so quiet on the acting front recently that we completely forgot she’s one of our favourite dressers like, ever. When we spotted her cool smart-casual outfit that she wore to the CBS, the CW and the Showtime TCA Party yesterday we just knew that we’d have to do a post about it.

Clashing and contasting prints are going to be a massive trend this Autumn, something that clever Rachel has wised up to. She teamed up a sizzling pair of cerise tailored trousers with a slouchy dark floral blouse and some leopard-print Louboutins – something that on paper shouldn’t work at all but on her really, really does.

There are some pretty much identical pieces on the high street – yay! You can replicate Rachel Bilson’s amazing party outfit by looking at our picks in the gallery above.

Shiny loves: Desire Clothing’s sizzling summer designs

Cream Bow Print Sundress

Picture 1 of 11

Make like trendsetters Chloe Sevigny or Kirsten Dunst this summer and wear your sweet folksy-print sundress with chunky sandals and a pair of vintage sunglasses. You can find this dress here.

May I just start off by saying, HOW HAVE I GONE THIS LONG WITHOUT KNOWING ABOUT DESIRE CLOTHING? I bet you’re all sitting at home reading this thinking “Geez Emily, we all know Desire sell great stuff, keep up with the times grandma”, but I have genuinely never got around to checking out their online store before. I wish I had – they could have solved so many of my “what shall I do with my last thirty pounds?” dilemmas.

This was initially supposed to be a piece about their awesome new shoe designs for summer, but I was so won over by their clothes that this has turned into a general free-for-all which just features all of my favourite stuff from the site crammed together. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first checked out the site – I’m afraid I’m a terrible snob and am always wary of labels that promise bargain-basement prices – but I was more than pleasantly surprised by what I found.

There’s an array of summer fashion as veritable as any available on the likes of Topshop or Urban Outfitters, from aztec-printed maxis to caped cocktail dresses and sexy gypsy tops. I’m a massive fan of their long-sleeved floaty sundresses (see the first image in the gallery) which I can totally imagine being seen on some cool New York actress like Chloe Sevigny on a summer’s day.

My absolute favourite design on the Desire Clothing site is their off-the-shoulder gypsy top, which you can buy in a variety of different florals on the website. I want one in every print.. better do a few stomach crunches first though.

If you’re not looking for a whole new wardrobe but just want to revamp things a little, invest in a pair of their S/S shoes, which combine chunky platform styles with crisp whites and sizzling colour for a style that is completely on-trend this season.

Trend Alert: Top 5 espadrille wedges

By emilyborrett on May 30th, 2011

The gorgeously feminine sexed-up espadrilles on the catwalk at D&G

Picture 1 of 6

When it comes to compiling a holiday or a summer wardrobe, everyone knows the importance of a good pair of shoes. After all, the right apparel on your feet can either make or break an outfit. But sometimes it just seems too daunting to pull on stilettos or monster heels just to feel confident and stylish – and that’s why we’re thanking God for the espadrille wedge, one of this season’s hottest shoes thanks to designers D&G. Pretty, leg-lengthing and comfy, investing in a pair is going to be a serious thought this summer.

Luckily this is one particular trend that the high street is embracing wholeheartedly, so you don’t have to pay designer prices for a great pair of summer shoes. When we trawled the internet to look at what’s out there we found masses of great styles, but to keep things simple we’ve condensed things down into our top 5 to save you time (you lucky, lucky reader).

ShinyStyle’s star buy? Topshop’s floral cotton wedges, complete with a pretty print and ankle ties. Wear them to a summer BBQ or out to a party – no matter where you are, your feet will be beautifully adorned.

Trend Alert: Sizzling prints for Spring

By emilyborrett on April 7th, 2011

Fruit Print Dress

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

Everyone went crazy for Stella McCartney's tropical fruit-printed dresses and blazers - this copycat version from Very.co.uk is an absolute steal.

Spring is definitely, finally here (I wish for good) and it’s time to ditch our fail-safe slouchy black sweaters and leggings for something a bit more cheerful. And what better to celebrate this gloriously unexpected weather with but some eye-wateringly pretty prints, just crying out to be worn in the rare British sunshine?

There were prints as far as the eye could see at the Spring/Summer 2011 catwalks. Breathtakingly pretty and feminine florals at Erdem, both seen on prints and stitched onto hand-made lace, shockingly bright leaf-prints at House of Holland, a sumptiously tropical offering from Stella McCartney of dress and separates printed with images of fruit.. I could go on.

Fashion prints have never been so sexy, so carefree, fun and happy, and the wonderful thing is that the high-street has wisely cottoned on to this. In the gallery above is our very favourite printed pieces available from the high street right now – so get stuck right in. This is a trend that excludes absolutely no one – all you need is the confidence to wear something eye-grabbing and fun, and there’s a piece out there to suit absolutely everyone.

Spring/Summer 2011 must-haves: This season’s hottest shades

By Andrea Petrou on April 7th, 2011

Floral Cat's Eye Sunglasses

Picture 1 of 8

Full-on glamour is the trend rocking the catwalks at the moment - we love how this Asos pair has a modern twist to a classic shape. Buy them, love them, wear them with everything.

Glory be, how great is this Mediterranean weather? I actually got a little bit sunburnt yesterday when I spent a long day on the grass with friends (I was supposed to be doing university work, but who can work in weather like this? We have to take advantage when it might be snowing or something next week.) And so, to thank this weather that’s winging it’s way over from Spain, apparently – thanks, Spain – we’re looking at one of summer’s most important fashion item, sunglasses.

Luckily for you readers there’s an absolute abundance of cool eyewear on the market at the moment, thanks to the inspirational catwalks of designers such as Henry Holland, Jil Sander and Prada, where eye-popping colour, futuristic shapes and glamourpuss styles were key. Our absolute favourite style of sunnies this season is the 50′s cat’s-eye sunnies, which have made a huge comeback, and will add a touch of glamour to any outfit this summer.

To see our favourite sunnies around at the moment, check out our gallery.

Duro Olowu collection at London fashion week

By Andrea Thatcher on September 26th, 2007

Duro%20Olowu_London%20Fashion%20Week.JPG
On Tuesday September 18th, British designer Duro Olowu showed his second-ever runway collection during London fashion week. The Nigerian-born designer created a collection of bell-sleeve trapeze dresses, gingham blouses, busy prints, ruffled necklines, and jade, jade, jade. The collection was pulled together nicely and very consistent, but the clashing prints on some items aren’t for everybody and it’s more likely the nicely tailored jackets and pants will sell to a wider audience.

Isabel Toledo takes Anne Klein in a new direction for spring

By Andrea Thatcher on September 15th, 2007

Anne%20Klein_NY%20fashion%20week%20show.JPG
For her second collection for Anne Klein, Isabel Toledo created clothing she described as “industrial glamour.” The Cuban designer adorned dresses with childlike hand-painted floral prints, courtesy of her artist husband accidentally smearing paint on a dress. The line was a melding of American sportswear, garden party, and industrial design. Highlights of the collection included a trench coat covered in rainbow tiles, black-and-white striped skinny pants, and a cinched-waist gray frock. The items were a bit inconsistent, though, with flirty, feminine classic spring dresses with floral prints followed by shiny silver and leather. While Toledo is obviously still trying to find her comfort zone, the collection was a refreshing change of pace for the label, which has struggled to find its voice in recent years.
