Mamma mia, forget all about London Fashion Week now as we’ve moved further across Europe to one of the ultimate big-daddy fashion capitals of the world: Milan. Expect drama, expect glamour, and hopefully expect a diva tantrum or two along the way as well.

Proceedings are certainly kicking off in style in Milan as one of the first designers to show there is Gucci, one of the biggest names in Milan Fashion Week and definitely one of the most fabulous. Creative director Frida Giannini listed her inspirations for the new collection as 20s actress Louise Brooks, Man Ray photographs and vintage architecture. All of these art-deco inspirations were immediately apparent in the sleek, shiny lines and dynamic silhouettes of the designs.

It was a highly aesthetically pleasing event, as liquid-looking metallic prints and bold black and green lines zig-zagged across tuxedo jackets for a hard, bold take on menswear redesigned as womenswear. Opulent monochrome pieces, with hints of jewel tones here and there in emerald-green inserts and gold accessories immediately made us see the inspiration of the roaring twenties, when fashion became feminist – all these women looked liberated, fabulous and like they were heading to a cocktail party at the top of a skyscraper in Manhattan.

We have to say we were most excited about the flapper-style cocktail dresses which came out onto the runway with incredible monochrome patterns with extremely delicate gold fringing – absolutely incredible.

Gucci don’t need to be worried about anyone creating a collection that is more polished and luxurious than this – they’ve got this one in the bag. But then again, they always do.

Gucci creative director Frida Giannini believes fashion is all about “natural elegance”.

By Andrea Petrou on April 6th, 2011

Frida Giannini believes fashion is all about “natural elegance”.

The Gucci creative director – who rose up through the ranks from design director at the Italian fashion house to her current role – thinks fashion is important but admits clothes cannot make a person look good if they are lacking natural style.

She explained: “The base of everything is what’s inside, your natural elegance – authenticity is important. If you’re not elegant in yourself you can never look sophisticated, unique and original.”

Frida – who is responsible for both womenswear and menswear at the iconic label – revealed she gets the inspiration for her menswear line from an eclectic mix of people including Jimmy Stewart, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones.

She says she designs clothes for men with an Italian soul and prefers to look to past icons rather than today’s celebrities when creating new collections for the brand.

Frida explained to Esquire magazine: “I design for international men but with an Italian soul. I try to reference men from the past, men such as James Stewart and other actors from the Fifties and Sixties because they were so elegant and so charming. But at the same time I’m attracted to rock stars from the Seventies such as The Rolling Stones and David Bowie.”

From CatwalkQueen:Gucci’s first full ad campaign for UNICEF will star Rihanna, it has been confirmed.

The Grammy-award winner was tapped by the label to represent its collaboration with the United Nation’s Children’s Fund.

“We’ve come a long way from Miss Bisou to Gucci,” said the singer, referring to her first ad campaign. “We have grown a lot in the endorsement world. It’s an honour to represent Gucci.” (Is that the royal “we”?)

Milan Fashion Week: Gucci

By Andrea Thatcher on September 28th, 2007

Gucci_Milan%20fashion%20week.JPGI was blown away by Frida Giannini’s spring Gucci collection. It reminded me a lot of Gottex, with its fabulous designs and colors mostly in yellow, black and white with splashes of hot pink. Her ultra-mod ’50s-updated big skirt, jacket, and belt ensembles (left) almost had me drooling and instantly shriek–I want that! The evening gowns are just to die for, most with one-shoulder strap, but all in such intricate, elegant designs in fresh, urbane patterns that I can totally picture myself donning at a posh charity ball–(sigh) if only… Check out more on the show after the jump.
