Wardrobe stories: my grandmother’s fur coat

By Lauren Bravo on April 15th, 2013

The Made in Chelsea set aren’t the only ones who can pull off a family heirloom. In the first of our Wardrobe Stories series, co-editor Lauren Bravo explains how her grandmother’s old coat became her go-to for winter glamour

My grandmother was a glamourpuss in the old school sense. Always coiffed, always manicured, but not starched – instead she had that sense of joyful, playful style that you just can’t fake or teach. Silk scarves, lacy gloves, a flash of scarlet lipstick, a perilously high heel for an octogenarian after two hip replacements. She was still teaching a keep-fit class as an octogenarian after two hip replacements too, mind.

Nanny delighted in showing off her sassiest shoes and telling me, “you can have them when I’m dead, not before.” She was a size five, meaning I could never squeeze my hooves into the Bally stilettos anyway, but that wasn’t the point. She was all about ‘heritage’ before Christopher Bailey et al cracked out the tweed – she knew what it meant to covet something beautiful, and patiently wait to inherit it. Never mind that everyone else was in Sketchers and Punkyfish zip-ups; my Grandmother’s wardrobe was my holy grail.

The very last time I saw her, the day before she died of pancreatic cancer, she was asking hospital nurses for her hairspray. Her funeral was on the hottest day of the year, and I wore a fuchsia pink wiggle dress and seamed stockings – completely inappropriate and yet everything she would have loved. “I’ve come as Funeral Barbie,” I told the vicar, solemnly.

But even Nanny might be surprised that her legacy has kept me warm for five winters and counting. I pounced on this coat during the big, sad wardrobe clearout that followed her death, and I brought it back to life by hacking a foot off the bottom – sacrilege, perhaps, but it was 2008 and none of us had conquered ‘midi’ without feeling like Edwina Currie yet.

It’s a (fake) brown astrakhan swing coat with a furry golden collar so big that it’s a bit like walking around in an Aslan costume. There is nothing like throwing on an outlandish coat to make everything underneath it look immediately better – or completely irrelevant, because HEY look at your coat. I can wear it to Londis and I still feel a bit like the feisty mistress of a 1930s gangster. The lining is ripped in places and there’s a big hole in the pocket that I’m forever losing tissues through, but still it manages to make me feel like a queen.

This coat has probably earned me more compliments than all my other clothes put together, even if I suspect half of those people are simply saying “coat!” in the same way we say “haircut!” or “ooh what a large and vibrant tattoo!”. It’s massive, it’s ostentatious, it’s not for everyone. But it’s a tribute to my eternally glamorous grandmother – and really bloody warm as well.

Paris Fashion Week Highlights: Louis Vuitton AW 2012

By Andrea Petrou on March 9th, 2012

Louis Vuitton went right back to the 1800s for its AW 2012 collection emulating the wealth of those boarding the Orient Express.

Furs and jewels oozed off models who marched next to a steam locomotive set. Edwardian hats, long coats and ballgowns in metallic fabrics were key items.

The luxury theme continued with porters trailing behind carrying that iconic Louis Vuitton luggage, including statement vanity cases, boxes and small suitcases, which was what the brand is so well known for.

See the gallery below for all the pictures.

NYFW: Marc by Marc Jacobs AW 2012

By Andrea Petrou on February 16th, 2012

The Spring/Summer trends have just hit the highstreet but we’re already lusting after Autumn/Winter style thanks to New York Fashion Week.

One designer that’s caught our eye is Marc Jacobs who sent his models down in military clad jumpsuits and hats for his winter 2012 Marc by Marc Jacobs range.

Stripes and flat lace up boots completed this look, while 60s geometric prints also got a look in thanks to Marc’s use of these in shift dresses with skater style skirts, coats and blouses.

Keeping in with the winter tradition fur also made an appearance on double breasted buttoned military style coats, while reds, dark blues and blacks made up the majority of the colour palate.

If only we could get our hands on these now.

Top Ten fake fur and leopard print coats and jackets

By Andrea Petrou on November 24th, 2009

Leopard print and fur is once again making it’s style debut this season with a range of celebrities sporting the love it or hate it trend, which manages to worm its way in nearly every other season.

Last week we reported that Pixie Geldof turned up to the Twlilight: New Moon New York premiere wearing a leopard print fake-fur gilet, while Alexa Chung and Lily Donaldson were also spotted in this trend at a fashion awards ceremony last week.

However, there will always be some designers and stars who take this trend that one step further opting for the real thing. This has caused a myriad of controversy over the years, with campaigners strongly protesting against it.

Many moons ago supermodels including Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford leant their support to a PETA campaign stating they would rather go nude than wear fur. However, Naomi Campbell went back on this a few years ago posing in a real fur jacket on the catwalk. Donna Karen has also been criticised for using the real thing in her collections.

And it seems the rage continues with PETA creating a Fur-Free Friday, after Thanksgiving where animal activists are going out of their way to remind holiday sale shoppers not to include fur on their shopping lists. One celebrity backing this campaign is actress Eva Mendes who said: “I didn’t always know how animals were killed for their fur, and I even wore fur once myself.”

However after she learnt that millions of animals are killed every year in the fur industry, she “swore that [she'd] never wear it again.”

She’s therefore advised us to fake it this season. We’ve taken heed and put together a gallery of the best fake fur coats and jackets out there.

However we want to hear from you. Do you agree that real fur is wrong or are protesters making too much of a big deal about it.
