Dream fashion collaboration: Pierre Hardy For Gap

By Andrea Petrou on October 20th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

Exciting news as Gap unveil the fruits of their most recent collaboration with design geniuse Pierre Hardy; one perfect pair of black suede and leather shoe boots. Well, sometimes simplicity is best. The shoes won’t hit stores in the US until the 28th of October at the slightly un-Gap price of $195, but we can forgive them – it is a beautiful shoe, after all.

Gap’s had a rough time of it these past few weeks; it’s taken a cutting verbal beating from the internet and worldwide fashion-lovers for its’ attempt to ditch their iconic logo for a newer, spiffier one (turns out that the phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is an important lesson to learn in fashion), so this collaboration could be exactly what the brand needs to get back into their customers’ good books. And we’ll certainly be helping out – by fighting tooth and nail to get a pair when they become available to buy in the UK.

Gap announces UK website

By admin on August 12th, 2010

Stand by your laptops ladies, Gap has just announced it’s launching an online store in the UK this year.

The retailer will be joining the likes of Zara, which is launching its UK online store on 2 September and H&M, which will follow on September 16 to bring us all the delights of the store straight to our fingertips.

According the WWD, the store, which already has a transactional site stateside, will roll out its online venture to to around 65 other countries – including the UK. And it will also be launching online stores for its sister company, Banana Republic.

Oh dear, with three great stores moving online there’s no hiding from the huge possibilities. We’d better hide those credit cards.

Like the dresses the celebs were wearing at the MET Ball? Think you could never afford one? Well think again.

Gap, which was the sponsor of last night’s event, has teamed up with designers including Alexander Wang, Sophie Theallet, Thakoon and Rodarte who created some of the dresses for the event. And it’s now giving you the chance to get your hands on some of the one-off creations for yourself.

However, like with anything that seems perfect in life there’s a catch. And that’s that you’ll have to bid for your dress from tomorrow. Log onto the Gap site tomorrow and keep bidding! Good luck.

Highstreet stores accused of “vanity sizing”

By Andrea Petrou on April 21st, 2010

Jeans.jpg

It’s been a few months since we last kicked off about clothes sizes.

Last time it was jeans that fell foul of our fashion eye after we had a rant about the different fits and sizes. And now research has found that some highstreet stores are increasing the size of their garments to convince shoppers that they wear a smaller clothing size.

According to The Times stores such as Marks & Spencer, Gap and John Lewis are creating “vanity sizes”, which means they are expanding the ideal measurements described for each clothing size, to make us feel better about ourselves.

For instance, in some stores we can easily slip into a size 10 dress, but in another we can’t even get our foot in a size 10.

Marks and Spencer of course denied the claim telling the paper it had not altered its measurements for suppliers since 2003, following a 3-D body scanning survey of women’s bodies, it has reportedly increased its ideal measurement guidelines.

“We are not sweetening the sizes or softening the blow for anyone but in 2007 we introduced a size 6 and a size 30 to our range and we tweaked the sizes on our website so they are based on an average body,” a store spokeswoman told The Times.

“We were trying to more accurately reflect what customers’ body shapes would be showing them. We did not change the size of the garments.”

Gap said that its sizes “depend on the fit and style” of the garment, while John Lewis said “emerging fashion trends and seasonal influences dictate sizing adjustments.”

We’re not sure what to make of this research, but we have been silently campaigning for shops to introduce universal measurements for a good few months now (wouldn’t it be lovely just to grab your size and leave instead of tirelessly trying on different ones?). We’ll be asking for your help with this shortly.

In the meantime we want to know what you think about this research. Should stores continue with their “vanity sizing” or are they doing more harm than good? Vote below and let us know.

Stella McCartney gives her famous friends a sneak preview for her GapKids collection

By Andrea Petrou on March 17th, 2010

Stella M.jpg

We don’t usually talk about children’s clothing here on ShinyStyle, unless of course they go up to an age 18 which we can just about squeeze into.

However when it’s Stella McCartney designing for GapKids we think it definitely deserves a mention, and by the looks of it the sizes are just about big enough to get into.
The Brit designer was joined by her model friends including Kate Moss and Laura Bailey who bought their children along to the sneak preview yesterday.

We’re already in love with the denim shirts and military style jackets. The collection goes on sale on 29 March, and of course we’ll be there ready and waiting. If the clothes don’t fit us at least our nieces and nephews will get treated.

Gap turns Love magazine’s fashion icons into t-shirts for charity

By Andrea Petrou on February 15th, 2010

LoveT-shirt.jpg

A few weeks ago we gave you a sneak preview of Love Magazine’s new covers featuring a range of supermodels including Lara Stone and Natalia Vodianova in the buff.

And if you loved them as much as we did then you’ll be pleased to hear the pictures aren’t going to disappear anytime soon, instead they’ll be making a far more public appearance.

Gap has created seven styles of grey cotton T-shirt, each bearing a cover from spring/summer 2010′s Fashion Icons issue in aid of the DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

Profits from the £30 t-shirts featuring the full set up of Naomi Campbell, Jeneil Williams, Kristen McMenamy and Daria Werbowy, will see the full on-sale price go towards the DEC Appeal.

However Kate Moss has asked that all profits from T-shirts featuring her image go to a UK children’s charity.

Stella McCartney designs t-shirt for World Aids Day

By Andrea Petrou on December 3rd, 2009

red.jpg

ShinyStyle seems to have taken on a bit of an ethical fashion theme today with our eco-friendly clothing gallery and charity scarves for Fight Cervical Cancer in Style.

Therefore we thought it only right to continue with news of Stella McCartney’s cute new charity tee to mark World Aids Day. The designer has teamed up with Gap to launch this gorgeous white t-shirt with a red printed necklace decoration, with 50% of proceeds going to Bono’s RED fund.

Stella said: “It’s an understatement to simply say I am happy to support World AIDS day with Bono and (Gap) RED. I hope by being part of this I can help in some way, since 1.5 million people still die every year of AIDS in Africa. I encourage people to buy it, they look great and help save lives in Africa.”

The t-shirt goes on sale on Saturday, which has put us in a bit of a queueing predicament, as we’re now not sure whether to wait in line patiently for this or for Sonia Rykiels lingerie range for H&M.

Uggly or a winter winner?

By Andrea Petrou on November 26th, 2009

We’ve been split on Ugg boots and similar ever since Lauren bought the fashion to light in her column. Looking at the comments we received and the number of you who Twittered, it seems there’s a divide between those of us who define them as trend and those who think they are tragic.

So we want to get to the bottom of this. We’ve put together a gallery of boots for this year which, we think fall into the love them or hate them category. Take a look at the gallery by clicking on the picture below and then let us know your thoughts by voting.

We look forward to reading your views.

Gap launches Channel Pierre Hardy boots and we find a cheaper alternative

By Andrea Petrou on October 8th, 2009

Channel Pierre Hardy.JPGFashionistas have been falling over themselves to get their hands on Channel Pierre Hardy’s boots for Gap.

One magazine editor has also admitted her team have a good few pairs each of these fur lined suede marvels, and we can see why. They are gorgeous.

The boots, which cost £108, aren’t cheap but this hasn’t deterred many people as they stampede to get their hands on a pair.

So we’ve had a little look around to try and find something similar, and of course at a much cheaper price. Cue these little gems from Clarks Originals.

They may not have the buckle detailing or height of Gap’s boots but for £89 this fur lined footwear, in a range of soft autumnal shades, could make a good alternative.

It is cool to love khaki – take it from Alexander Wang, Vena Cava, and Albertus Swanepoel. This year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists have joined forces with Gap to bring you their versions of the classic khaki, instead of the usual white shirts. These range from dresses to hats to jackets.

This is as political as we’ll get, promise…

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on October 17th, 2008

Vote for tee.jpg

Gap won’t tell you who to vote for and neither will we, but they do have a new T-shirt that’s easily customizable if you’d like to be a bit louder with your politics!

The Vote T, $15, features the words “vote for” and a blank line that Gap suggests filling in with things like love, peace, music, laughter, etc. Or you can leave it blank and just let it speak for voting itself!

There are also “vote for” buttons for your Facebook page, click here to take a look. (And hey, while you’re on Facebook, join our blog network!)

All about the Gap

Gap to consolidate GapKids, babyGap, GapMaternity and GapBody stores

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on June 11th, 2008

Gap Body.jpg

Looks like Gap bit off more than they could chew with all their real estate holdings. Much like Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy and Piperlime recently consolidated their online shops, the retailer will be consolidating its sub-brands into its regular Gap stores.

GapKids, babyGap, GapMaternity and GapBody stores will soon be closing down and their merchandise being redistributed to regular Gap stores.

“We want to put those together with the adult store, unless there is a certain location where it makes sense for those stores to be there,” Gap CEO Glenn Murphy told WWD. “It is easier to run; one management team, one lease to deal with. The variable expenses make more sense, the coverage between people in the stores makes a lot more sense.”
