Giorgio Armani wanted Charlene Wittstock’s wedding dress to be completely modern

By Andrea Petrou on July 5th, 2011

Giorgio Armani wanted Charlene Wittstock’s wedding dress to be “completely modern”.

The Italian designer created the South African beauty’s gown she wore to marry Monaco’s Prince Albert II on Saturday and says he was conscious for the dress to be different from Albert’s late mother, Princess Grace.

Writing for vogue.com. Giorgio said: “The idea was to go for a completely modern look, without an obvious sense of nostalgia or revivalism.

I felt this was appropriate given that there would inevitably be comparisons with Princess Grace, and though such comparisons are of course a sign of admiration, each person has their own individual and unique style, and style is an expression of the times.”

Giorgio says former Olympic swimmer Charlene was a pleasure to work with and the perfect muse, saying: “Charlene is without a shadow of a doubt very beautiful.

Tall and slim, she is sporty and at the same time has a natural elegance about her. Dressing her is such a pleasure – she knows how to wear my creations with the nonchalance and confidence of youth. I believe Charlene has the ideal figure to show off great dresses, because they highlight the fine curves and beautiful structure of her back and shoulders.”

The dress took 2,500 hours to create, including 700 hours for the embroidery alone, and featured 40,000 Swarovski crystals, 20,000 mother of pearl teardrops and 30,000 stones in gold shades.

Armani designs tour outfits for Alicia Keys

By Andrea Petrou on May 7th, 2010

Alicia and Armani.jpg

Armani is a busy man.

It was only this morning that we reported on his design venture with Lady Gaga’s American Idol performance outfit, and now our fashion radars have picked up on another collaboration.

This time the designer has teamed up with friend and singer Alicia Keys to create a range of outfits for the singer’s The Element of Freedom, European Tour.

According to Vogue the wardrobe includes four signature Giorgio Armani and Emporio Armani looks, featuring a military leather jacket with crocodile print detailing, a one-shoulder silk chiffon gown in dark grey with intricate beading, and a show-stopping LBD in viscose lamé with a cascade ruffle.

And like any singers outfit the costumes will also come complete with sparkle courtesy of Swarovski crystals, sequins and beading.

Everyone’s hopped all over the Karl Lagerfeld-as-rapper image from the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar, so we decided to show you some of the other designers’ fantasy shoots.

Here’s designer Michael Kors as James Stewart as L.B. Jeffries in Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” which is a fabulously styled movie.

Donatella Versace chose to portray “The Princess and the Pea” on a pile of matresses.

“I am not a great believer in fairy tales,” she said. “Every woman should fight hard for her own happy endings. Although occasionally, it is nice to wake up as a princess.”

For more on what the likes of Tyra Banks, Donna Karan and more chose for their shoots, keep reading.

Fall 2008 Couture: Armani Privé

By Andrea Thatcher on July 2nd, 2008

armaniprivecouture_aw0809.jpg

From Catwalk Queen:The Telegraph’s unstoppable Hilary Alexander called it “everything the well-dressed and well-heeled wealthy woman of today could conceivably want in her wardrobe,” and we are obliged to agree. What John Galliano is doing with see-through skirts this week, is what Giorgio Armani is doing with tailoring and bow ties. His sharp autumn/winter couture 2008-9 collection, was a walk down memory lane for Armani’s history of silhouettes.

Giorgio Armani has dressed a plethora of celebrities, and now he can add dressing a superhero to the list. The latest Batman movie, The Dark Knight, will see Christian Bale wearing an array of Giorgio Armani hand made-to-measure suits whenever he plays Batman’s alter-ago, Bruce Wayne. Not that Wayne wears suits throughout the movie, he had the choice of custom made Armani single-breasted or three-button suits, single-breasted tuxedos and black wool coats.

One way fashion benefits from writers strike? More celebs in the front row

By Andrea Thatcher on January 29th, 2008

Ellen%20Pompeo.jpg

The Grey’s Anatomy stars seem to have been the first to confirm their fashion show attendance. We’ve already reported that Chandra Wilson and Sara Ramirez will be at the Angel Sanchez show, and now Ellen Pompeo is reported to be showing up for Y-3 after attending Giorgio Armani Prive in Paris last week. She is seen at the SAG awards at left in a Nina Ricci creation she supposedly picked from the pages of Vogue magazine.

It seems that many celebrities are looking to supplement incomes affected by the writer’s strike, either asking flat out for money, flights, and hotels in return for attending shows or even saying they’ll only attend if they can get a contract for an ad campaign.

“Gone are the days when celebrities came to the shows in exchange for a wardrobe,” Alison Brod, of Alison Brod Public Relations, said to WWD. “They want to make money.”

Lori Levine, of talent booking firm Flying Television, told WWD that Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen and Narciso Rodriguez are always popular with celebs. She expects stars with strong relationships with designers – like Jessica Simpson at Michael Kors, Claire Danes at Narciso Rodriguez and Teri Hatcher at Badgley Mischka, to be out en force.

Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2008: Giorgio Armani Prive

By Andrea Thatcher on January 22nd, 2008

Armani%20collage%201.jpg (Click image to enlarge.)

Beautiful tailoring came in carefully molded suits and elegantly draped evening gowns at the Giorgio Armani Prive haute couture show on Monday. The gowns really stole the show with beautiful lines, fan pleating, and subtle details we’re just itching to see on the red carpet. The dresses were traditionally romantic and feminine, while the suiting acheived the same affect in a more modern way. Jackets were molded onto the body and skirts expanded on the volume we saw at Dior in a more subtle, geometric way.

Many more pictures after the jump.

David Beckham to be new face of Emporio Armani underwear

By Andrea Thatcher on November 12th, 2007

d%20beckham.jpg
David Beckham’s incredibly hot with his clothes on or off, (Ok, maybe a little hotter without!) so I can’t wait to see pictures posted everywhere of him in his underwear! The world’s hottest soccer player is giving his fashionista wife a run for her money–he’s now signed with Armani to be the new global face of Emporio Armani underwear. And we’ll actually be seeing the ads in person, as the line will finally be launching in the U.S. in February, exclusively at Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s department stores. Beckham began shooting the ad campaign last week in Los Angeles, which will premiere in fashion magazines around the world in January.

Spring Costume Institute exhibit to focus on Superheroes … fashion world scratches it’s head

By Andrea Thatcher on October 23rd, 2007

Roberts%20Clooney.jpg
Like the rest of the fashionable we wait with baited breathe for the Costume Institute spring exhibit each year. And like good little patrons of the arts, we don’t just mean the Gala (while yes, that is the most heart-pounding red carpet of our voyeur year). We love the exhibits themselves! Validating fashion as an art form, bringing the country together in celebration of one theme from fashion, a trip to NY if you’re not in the city, it’s all very exciting. So it’s with disappointment we relay our underwhelmed attitude toward the 2008 exhibit. Superheroes? Seriously? Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy. The Fashion and Fantasy part sounds fun and exciting, but the superhero part is going to be way more intriguing to my husband than myself. I can’t imagine Giorgio Armani, the honorary chair of the event, being that excited either. Maybe Julia Roberts and George Clooney, co-chairs of the gala dinner will be excited, as actors. But can we have one thing in fashion not infringed on by Hollywood?

Armani to design cell phone and other electronics for Samsung

By Andrea Thatcher on October 4th, 2007

samsungp520.jpg
Is your Razr so totally last season? It was recently announced that Giorgio Armani has partnered with electronics brand Samsung to design a phone and an LCD television––just the beginning of a range of electronics items from the designer. The cellular phone––called the Armani-Samsung luxury phone, but known in tech circles as the P520––is intended to compete with LG’s Prada phone and the iPhone. The phone is expected to launch in November and will look as sleek as an Armani suit. Samsung states that the black and chrome look is intended to “achieve an iconic status.”
