Every Spring/Summer we see an abundance of pastels adorning the highstreet and this upcoming season is no different.
However 2012′s take on this traditional trend is all about sheer, soft fabrics as well as feathers in pretty dresses, skinny suits and shift frocks.
Mulberry opted for yellow as its key colour while pale blues were a favourite at Ralph Lauren and Lanvin. Givenvhy showed off pastel pinks, while Christopher Kane went for bolder satins.
Hurry up summer we can’t wait to parade our pastels.
Gisele Bundchen has been confirmed as the new face of Givenchy.
The Brazilian supermodel appears in the latest campaign for the French fashion house, confirming months of rumours she was taking over from Mariacarla Boscono.
Gisele’s first ad is in “the expression of a love story between a surfer and a mermaid” and she stars alongside two male models (Chris Moore and Simone Nobili) in a gothic, beach-side spread with big, black surfboards.
Earlier this year, Gisele was named the world’s top earning model for the seventh year.
The 31-year-old beauty has topped the list, compiled by Forbes.com, since 2004, but this year saw her income increase by a huge $20 million to earn $45million over one year.
Proof of Gisele’s star status enhancing brands is easy to find, as after becoming the face of hair care brand Pantene in March 2010, the company’s sales went up by 40 per cent in Latin America.
Heidi Klum – who earned $20 million through her recent partnership with website Amazon.com and launching her own clothing line with sportswear brand New Balance – came second followed by Kate Moss in third.
It’s almost time to start wrapping up warm again (as I write this the house is cold and it’s raining outside, guh) – I am always sad to see summer go, because it’s my favourite season, but I always manage to cheer myself with the thought that colder weather means NEW JUMPERS.
Luckily, jumpers and pullovers are one of the key pieces that you’ll need this A/W if you want to keep in with the current trends. Thanks to Givenchy’s mental, luxurious take on grandma-wear which included shiny sweatshirts with prints of naked pin-up girls and wild animals on them, it’s all about silly, kitsch and often quite tacky knitwear.
The more stuff crammed into a jumper design, the better. If it makes your eyes water a little bit when you look at it, it’s probably perfect for this season. If you want to find something quite as spectacularly kitsch as the designs we’ve seen at Givenchy then you’re best off looking in vintage and charity shops, or having a quick flick through your mail-order catalogues. Or, if you just want a statement jumper there are also some cute pieces on the high street.
Check out the gallery above for our favourite statement jumpers.
It's all about quirky knitwear this season thanks to Givenchy. We love this quirky knitted jumper from River Island which will look great layered over a midi dress with costume jewellery.
It’s time for a round-up of Shiny’s dream buys for the week! I’m starting my fashion illustration degree in September and I’ve got serious fashion nerves at the moment; whenever I look at my wardrobe I feel like I’ve got nothing to wear (which is definitely not true, but sadly this is the way a compulsive shopper’s mind works).
So I’ve been scouring the high-street sites for the past couple of weeks mentally compiling a shopping list that I thought I’d share with you- this week I’m inspired by the “eccentric granny chic” look that Givenchy brought to the catwalk, which means quirky jumpers, layerable midi dresses, lavish costume jewellery and clashing prints. Basically, a look that is really fun to put together.
My ultimate star buy of the week is Topshop’s faux fur leopard-print coat, which is oh-so-sixties and will look amazing with a plain tunic dress and opaque tights. Check out the gallery for this week’s top picks from the high street.
It’s going to be hard to come back down to Earth after yesterday’s Royal Wedding madness (didn’t Kate Middleton look beautiful, just like a 21st century Grace Kelly?) but, alas, life goes on, and it’s time that we tidy our Union Jack bunting away. Our thoughts are travelling back to Paris today to take a look at one of France’s most beautiful, rock and roll fashion enigmas – Lou Doillon, daughter of style icon Jane Birkin and one of Karl Lagerfeld’s fabulous couture-clad harem.
Always seen in attendance at Chanel’s most exclusive dinners, cocktail parties and launches, and often hanging off the arm of Herr Lagerfeld himself, the actress is a strong patron of Chanel and lends the label’s designs attitude and edge in bucketfuls. With her shaggy brunette hair, French smile and razor-sharp cheekbones, Doillon’s is a face that you couldn’t mistake anywhere whether it’s at a Vogue party or in the front rows at Paris Fashion Week. She is, by the way, always at the front row at PFW – we want this girl’s life so much! Oh, and did we mention that she is the muse for Givenchy?
So many celebrities at the moment try hard to work the European bohemian look, but it is obvious from Lou’s family roots that this is one girl that doesn’t have to try hard at all.
With Jane Birkin as her mother and French director Jacques Doillon, it’s obvious that this is one actress with first-hand experience with the bohemian lifestyle. We’re completely in love with her nonchalant laid-back style, and it’s clear to see why Karl is too. Check out our gallery for our favourite Lou Doillon looks.
Guillaume Henry thinks Riccardo Tisci will be the ideal person to take over at Christian Dior.
The fashion house has been looking for a new creative director following the sacking of John Galliano and the Carven designer thinks his former Givenchy boss would be able to handle the pressure, although isn’t sure if he would want the coveted role.
He told vogue.co.uk: “He can do so many things, of course. I don’t know if he will do it, but definitely he could. Look what he has done at Givenchy. When you think of it, you used to think of Audrey Hepburn. You don’t think of her any more, but it’s still Givenchy.”
Henry says the Dior job isn’t something he’s interested in at the moment as he wants to concentrate on his role at Carven.
He said: “I work with pleasure but I can’t imagine doing anything but this. The first thing I wanted to do was establish the Carven DNA – and I’m comfortable with that now. There’s lots to do here.”
Alexa Chung is a huge fan of Carven and Henry says it’s very flattering to her in their prices.
He said: “We adore her. The girl in the spring/ summer 2011 lookbook does look a little like her, but that happened really by chance. She’s great because she doesn’t try to be anyone else; she’s just a really cool girl, but without looking like she spent hours getting ready. Her look has no frontal sexuality, but it’s so attractive. There’s a light around her.”
Riccardo Tisci initially turned down his job as creative director at Givenchy.
The designer – who is widely tipped to take over from shamed designer John Galliano at French fashion house Christian Dior – explained while he was first chosen to replace Julien Macdonald at Givenchy in February 2005, he was reluctant to give up running his own line.
However, when his mother told him she had to sell her home after falling on hard times, he quickly changed his mind.
Riccardo explained: “I wasn’t interested. Not at all. I was going to say no. But the week before, my mother called me and said to me, ‘I am going to tell you something I haven’t even told your sisters: I think I am going to sell our house because your sisters are struggling, they’re having children, they need the money. I will go to a retirement home.’
“When I heard that it was like a knife in my heart. I felt like such a failure, that my mother had to sell the house of my father whom I don’t remember.
“And then I went to Paris, and they showed me a contract with all these zeros on it, and it was like help from God. I thought ‘If I sign this, my mother will never have to worry again.’ So I signed it.”
The Italian designer credits his mother with giving him the “confidence” he needed to believe in his skills in the fashion world.
He added to the Financial Times newspaper: “My mother, she gave me everything. She gave me the confidence to believe in myself. It’s a strange time in fashion – everything has got so big.
“We can get very insular, the fashion tribe – we think we’re a lot of people but actually we’re very small – but my mother, my sisters don’t understand fashion now, which is how I know what the final consumer feels. They don’t want to buy image, they want to buy substance.”
Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci is set to take over from John Galliano as the chief designer at Dior.
The Central Saint Martins graduate is said to have been “confirmed” for the job, although the French fashion house has yet to confirm the news.
Style.com fashion editor Derek Blasberg tweeted: “‘I was just told backstage at the @KatyPerry concert (of all places!) that Riccardo Tisci is CONFIRMED at Dior. (sic)”
However, the 35-year-old sartorialist claimed to be happy in his position at Givenchy earlier this week.
He said: “I felt this was a strong, positive season. And I’m happy at Givenchy.”
Galliano was sacked from Dior recently after being filmed shouting an anti-Semitic rant at women in a French cafe.
In a statement, the fashion house’s president Sidney Toledano said: “I condemn most firmly the statements made by John Galliano which are in total contradiction to the essential values that have always been defended by the House of Christian Dior.”
Another name recently suggested for the job at Dior was Lanvin head Alber Elbaz.
Kate Moss will look “fresh and modern” on her wedding day.
The supermodel is set to marry Jamie Hince later this year and celebrity hairdresser James Brown is set to style her tresses and while they have not yet discussed her look, James is certain she won’t have a dated up-do.
James – who hosts his new TV show ‘Great British Hairdresser’, which searches for the UK’s next greatest hair stylist – exclusively told BANG Showbiz: “I might well be doing her wedding hair! I don’t know what it will be though because Kate’s not like that, she doesn’t plan her looks ahead. She looks in her wardrobe and what’s in there she wears. She just chucks it on and goes, which is why I think she always looks so cool.
“Why do brides wear have up dos on their big day? They have this lovely long gorgeous hair and then they put it up and turn into Irish dancers. It’s fresh and modern to have it down so I can see Kate with something like that.”
James has worked with Kate for over 20 years says he’s proud of every look he’s given her.
Talking about the best cut he’s given, James – who has also worked with Lily Allen, Sienna Miller and Liv Tyler – said: “I suppose when I cut all Kate’s hair off into that little crop in 2000 and everyone kind of went mad, but then every time I do something to her hair it makes the front page!”
James hosts ‘Great British Hairdresser’ alongside model Abbey Clancy and magazine editor Jo Elvin, which airs on Mondays on E4 at 10pm.
We’re head over heels over Cate Blanchett’s Oscar dress, but we know it’s not to everyone’s taste.
Well known for her kooky style, Cate pulled off this stunning light lilac backless frock by Givenchy.
However, unlike many others the detailing didn’t stop there. Yellow beading formed the back straps of this chiffon number, while cut out detailing in the middle really made this frock stand out.
But tell us what you think. Is it a red carpet fab or red carpet flop?
It’s been a busy month for fashionista as the various fashion weeks have taken them from New York to London and to Milan. However as Milan Fashion Week came to an end the fashion crowd were packing their bags and heading off in the direction of France for Paris Fashion Week.
Staring yesterday, the 9-day event will be host to 91 catwalk shows to keep the fashion crowd alert. Day one, which was yesterday, saw a few collections from up-and-coming designers like Aganovich, from London, and Anthony Vaccarello who was targeted by Vogue’s influential September issue.
And we have to say we were impressed with the latters designs.
Vaccarello sent his models down the catwalk in classic Parisian chic. Asymmetric structured dresses in black and black frock flounced down the catwalk alongside risque sheer styles that showed off more than a little bit of cleavage.
There were also backless bodices as well as rouched mini skirts and open blazers with nothing underneath. We need to be hitting that gym if we want to be wearing these designs next season.
Keep reading as we’ll be bringing you all the gossip from Balenciaga, Balmain, Celine and Givenchy – who will all be showing off their new creations here as well as Giles Deacon who is showcasing his first collection for Ungaro. Jean-Paul Gaultier willalso reveal his last ever collection for Hermes, before he hands over to Christophe Lemaire. It’s going to be very exciting.
