How will the economy affect the Golden Globe red carpet

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 9th, 2009

Golden Globes predictions.jpg

Ostentatious jewels and status bags are on their way out, so what will this mean for the ultimate status show down – awards season?

Rachel Zoe, who will be styling best actress nominee Anne Hathaway and presenter Cameron Diaz for the Globes, doesn’t think the move away from bling and glitz will necessarily mean boring black.

“My instinct is always escapism,” she told WWD. “Red-carpet and awards shows to me are not pretentious. It’s an escape from reality….[In the] recession, everyone’s getting hit. People look to Hollywood for an escape. People need an escape, life is tough enough.”

Awaiting awards season – Globes attendees confirmed

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 5th, 2009

Awards season is nearly upon us, and first up are the Golden Globes this Sunday. Who can we expect to grace the red carpet?

Nominees Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz and Tina Fey have confirmed their seats at the dinner, and it was just announced that Drew Barrymore, Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez, Hayden Panettiere, Amy Poehler, Salma Hayek and Jake Gyllenhaal will be among the presenters.

Also of note: this year’s Miss Golden Globe is Rumer Willis. We’re not sure how we feel about star offspring who are actually kind of celebrities in their own right filling this position. Guess awards shows need to do whatever they can to pull in the ratings.

Golden Globes non-event coverage: who we wish we’d seen

By Andrea Thatcher on January 13th, 2008

Golden%20Globes%20black.jpg

With the Golden Globes reduced to a half hour press conference, the red carpet traded for a picket line, and all the parties cancelled, it was not a very glam evening. But with many winners being of the lower-profile, less headline-grabbing sort, would a gala telecast have been a letdown anyway? Would everyone have worn black?

Take Julia Roberts, for instance. Pretty much the most megawatt star you can find, she has been sticking to basic black on the red carpet for a while (here at the American Cinematheque Awards and the Charlie Wilson’s War premiere). Her film did not win any of the five awards it was nominated for, giving way to lesser known performances like Cate Blanchett in I’m Not There and Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Men.

For more on why Angelina Jolie and Juno star Ellen Page, while excellent performers, probably wouldn’t have upped the glamour quotient anyway, keep reading.

Past pics of 2008 Golden Globe winners: Cate Blanchett and Keira Knightley

By Andrea Thatcher on January 13th, 2008

We’re not really sure it was worth listening to Billy Bush and Nancy O’Dell to hear about the Golden Globe winners live, so if you’ve waited until Monday morning to check out the highlights, good job.

Two of our favorite fashionista winners were Cate Blanchett for best supporting actress in I’m Not There, and Keira Knightley whose film Atonement won for best motion picture, drama.

Here we show Cate at the American Film Institute awards in December. We love the dress but find the length a little awkward. One of Keira’s 2007 style high points was the L.A. premiere of Atonement in an ethereal Rodarte dress.

Even if the show doesn’t go on, we’ll still have Elton John’s Oscar party

By Andrea Thatcher on January 10th, 2008

Elton%20John.jpg

On Monday we told you that sadly the Golden Globes would not be going ahead due to the ongoing writers’ strike. What if the Oscars are next?! Although we’re sympathetic to the writers’ cause, we couldn’t help but feel a little bit disappointed about the lack of red carpet action. But maybe there will be some stylish action…

Elton John and David Furnish have announced that despite the possible lack of awards ceremony their annual Oscar party and charity event for his Aids Foundation (sponsored by Chophard and VH1) must definitely go on.

No style icons to be made at Golden Globes this year – ceremony cancelled

By Andrea Thatcher on January 7th, 2008

Reese%20globes.jpg

Seeing Reese’s smiling face and sunny dress at last year’s Golden Globes makes us so sad that there will be no such fabulous fashion moments this year. There’s still hope of televised coverage of various Golden Globe parties, and at least pictures of them, but it’s just not the same.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been trying to come up with a solution that would appease the Writer’s Guild so that they would not picket the ceremony but have so far been unsuccessful. While no statement has been made on the Golden Globes Web site at press time beyond saying a decision would be made today, the internet is buzzing with the cancellation.

It will be really disapointing if the entire awards show season goes the way of the globes. Good thing we’ve got fashion week in February to perk us up.

Golden Globe Nominees – What will Keira Knightley, Cate Blanchett, and Anna Friel wear?

By Andrea Thatcher on December 13th, 2007

Golden%20Globes%20Premiere.jpg

The Golden Globe nominations are out, and some of our favorite fashionistas – plus a few newcomers – have made the list. But who will make the really important list: the best dressed list? With American Gangster, Atonement, Eastern Promises, The Great Debaters, Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood nominated for best motion picture drama, and Across the Universe, Charlie Wilson’s War, Hairspray, Juno and Sweeney Todd up for musical/comedy, we can count on some of our favorite stars making the red carpet their runway for the night. Read on to see what we’re hoping for as well as a picture of Hayden Panettiere at the nominations.
