Yay or Nay Wednesday: Gucci Joy Boston Bag

By Andrea Thatcher on January 16th, 2008

Gucci%20joy%20bag.jpg

When we were perusing the new spring/summer Gucci arrivals at Saks Fifth Avenue, we really liked this Gucci Joy Boston bag in the thumbnail and so clicked on it. But when we got up close, we weren’t so sure. Is the floral embroidery that looks more like applique in some parts, too much or just enough? Or does the basic black and white palette make up for it? If you had the $1,950 lying around, would you buy this bag, yay or nay?

Brittany Snow goes strapless at the 2008 Palm Springs International Film Festival

By Andrea Thatcher on January 7th, 2008

Brittany%20Snow.jpg

Brittany Snow walked the red carpet at the 2008 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala this weekend in support of her film Hairspray, the sing-along version of which is being presented at the festival. Luckily she was dressed a lot chicer than her character in the film. We love her sleek style in a strapless, below-the-knee dress. The dress’s sparkling modern embellishment really makes the look.

WWD luxury report – bag popularity contest offers some surprises

By Andrea Thatcher on November 8th, 2007

luxury%20list%20bags.jpg

The annual ranking of handbag brands has been released by WWD today with some surprises. First off, Coach nabs the top spot as the brand luxury consumers are most familiar with, above Louis Vuitton by no small margin. 76% of consumers recognize a Coach bag as compared to 63% who recognize the venerable LV. But just as surprising are the vast differences among the “it” bags which are driving other competitors in the sector. Gucci came in number three and credits the Indy Bag, left, for sales growth. This bag is very traditional and less high-fashion with its logo print, despite a high price tag of $2,350. On the other hand, eighth-ranked Fendi is relying on its rather out-there To You bag, $1,300, which is very interesting but may not appeal to mass consumers.

Gucci high-heel platforms for a grand holiday debut

By Andrea Thatcher on October 9th, 2007

gucci.jpgThe season’s wedges and pumps don’t need to limit you to thick heels for special occasions, and sometimes you can even forego the stilettos in favor of a little more comfort. If you’ve got a long night of parties and mingling ahead, some extra support in the shoe department is a top priority. Platform sandals get a makeover right in time for the holidays with the Gucci High Heel Kelly platform sandal ($675). Covered completely in black suede, this one features a demure gold trim and with an extra large bow-style knot on the front; consider it a miniature present for those pampered feet! Wrapping up nice and chic at the ankles, it’s perfect for pairing with a holiday minidress, cropped satin pants, or an A-line skirt to show your (very sculpted, surely) gams.

Oxford Heels, from the Fall ’07 Runway to Your Closet

By Andrea Thatcher on August 28th, 2007

oxford1.jpg oxford2.jpg

With fall’s sleeker, more grown-up looks, designers like Fendi and Gucci strapped platform oxford heels on their models’ feet to go with the more classical look of their collections. The pair above from Fendi is studded, sky-high, and ultra-expensive. Instead, try the Rosanne pair from Bakersshoes.com, below, for only US$79.95.
