Gwen Stefani asks kids for fashion advice

By Andrea Petrou on November 23rd, 2011

Gwen Stefani asked her children for advice on her new kids’ clothing line.

The No Doubt singer – who has two kids, Kingston, five, and two-year-old Zuma with singer Gavin Rossdale – loved the “creative” stage of designing her Harajuku Mini for Target children’s range, which includes biker jackets, skinny jeans, trainers, and backpacks – and she even got some assistance from her own youngsters.

She said: “My kids have a big opinion about it.

“I’m just excited. I think that moms’ are going to walk into Target and lose their minds – ‘Are you serious right now? And it’s $20? All right, I’m taking five.’

“I feel really proud of it. It’s fun to be creative. It’s fun to bake the cookies and have everyone eat them. It’s a great feeling.”

The blonde beauty – whose first fashion line, L.A.M.B., which consisted of shoes, watches and bags, debuted in 2003 – wanted her children’s brand to have a similar style to her signature looks over the years, but she still can’t believe the range has finally come to fruition.

She added to Access Hollywood: “I’ve been working on this thing for almost three years. So, for me, it’s like really surreal that it’s actually happening.

“I really wanted to do this so bad. Being able to make stuff for the right price point and get it out there so people can actually have access to it. This is like the ideal situation to have. It’s really exciting.

“This is really cute and really wearable. It’s so fun-the first time I went in for the fittings, and they brought out all the little mannequins-they actually have diapers on them! When you’re fitting, you’re fitting with a diaper.

“I wanted it to look like all of my signature looks that I’ve done through the years, kind of for children. I wanted to bring fashion to kids.”

Gwen Stefani teams up with Target to create affordable clothing range

By Andrea Petrou on July 19th, 2011

Gwen Stefani is teaming up with Target to create an affordable range of clothes for babies, children and young teenagers.

The No Doubt singer – who already has her own fashion range L.A.M.B. – will work on the collection, entitled Harajuku Mini, with the budget store, which will be a spin-off of her successful Harajuku Lovers young contemporary apparel and accessories collection and Harajuku Lovers fragrance.

She told WWD: “Harajuku Mini is a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to do a cool children’s fashion line inspired by the supercute and playful kid’s clothing you find in Japan. The whole idea is about being creative, expressing your own individuality and having fun getting dressed. Target has given me the creative freedom to design kid’s clothing that is different than most anything you usually see out there with great quality, attention to detail and most of all, available at amazing prices.”

Trish Adams, senior vice president of apparel and accessories for Target said: “Gwen is a creative force and her ability to create fun, wearable fashion made her an ideal partner for Target.”

Prices for Harajuku Mini for Target – which will be launched in two phases, one in November and the next in January – range from $3.99 to $29.99.

Donatella Versace not worried about celebrity designers

By Andrea Petrou on April 19th, 2011

Donatella Versace has rubbished the efforts of celebrity designers claiming they are no competition to her.

The 55-year-old Italian – who took over as creative director of Versace after her brother Gianni was murdered in 1997 – has slammed a “lack of creativity” in lines designed by famous stars.

She said: “I think it is more a question of marketing. Some of these collections are for cheaper, mass market fashion. I don’t think that creativity is there.

“You need to live among real things, you need as much information as possible.”

While Donatella did not single out any famous person in particular, there are a number of celebrities with their own clothing lines including Victoria Beckham, Gwen Stefani, Katie Holmes and Jessica Simpson.

Although she’s not a fan of celebrity designers, Donatella – whose famous fans include January Jones and Angelina Jolie – has previously revealed she is worried that young designers find it difficult to get started in the industry, saying: “Since the big fashion groups started, of course, it’s harder for young people to get started. Now you talk about merchandising, marketing, where to put a product, how much it should cost, entry prices, and for someone straight out of college, that’s scary. I think that the pushing of the commercial side of fashion over the past 10 years has maybe killed creativity a little – I’m talking generally here – but that may be changing again now.”

Gwen Stefani is vain

By Andrea Petrou on April 6th, 2011

Gwen Stefani is incredibly “vain”.

The 41-year-old singer is renowned for her immaculate grooming and because of this, Gwen – who has two children, Kingston, four, and Zuma, two, with husband Gavin Rossdale- admitted she struggled with her changing shape during her pregnancies because she felt “gross”.

She explained: “I mean, I’m very vain. That would be my middle name. Of course I am, you know what I mean? I love the visual.

“You feel pretty gross when you are first pregnant. You don’t feel cute, you feel disgusting. You’re getting fat. It was hard.”

While Gwen is obsessed with her appearance, she doesn’t think the latest crop of singers, including Rihanna and Lady Gaga, are inspired by her look because she wears more clothes than they do and doesn’t think about promoting a sexy image.

She told America’s Elle magazine: “I don’t see myself in those girls. I usually put pants on. I see these girls as more going for the sex-symbol thing. I was more, in the band, like a tomboy. Of course, I think every girl is sexy, so there’s going to be a little of that. But I see a lot of younger artists going more toward the sexy thing.”

Gwen also revealed Valentine’s Day (14.02) is always special for her and Gavin, because the pair – who have been together for 14 years and married for nine – enjoyed their first kiss around that time.

She said: “The first time we ever kissed was right around Valentine’s Day – we were in New Orleans on tour. So, yeah, I always think about that because it’s unbelievable that we’ve been able to stay together. I feel so proud of us – it’s one of my biggest achievements.”

Gwen Stefani can’t compete with top quality designers when it comes to her own fashion range.

By Andrea Petrou on March 29th, 2011

Gwen Stefani can’t compete with top quality designers when it comes to her own fashion range.

The No Doubt singer launched her clothing line L.A.M.B. in 2004 and although she thinks her lack of formal training means she will never be an equal to couture designers such as Vivienne Westwood or John Galliano, Gwen admitted she prefers to design casual wear.

She explained: “What qualifies me? I don’t have qualifications really. I don’t have technical qualifications. I just have a vibe of what I like and I have strong opinions about what I like and what is me.

“I’m not going to ever be a Vivienne Westwood or a John Galliano. I’m trying to make clothes to wear every day, that’s what L.A.M.B. is. It’s not a couture line.

“I think fashion is more of a fun sort of thing. It’s an expression of yourself and your personality and your mood, it’s not something we take super deep. For me the line is genuinely for myself. I want to make a line of clothes that I want to wear – it’s kind of selfish.”

Although Gwen admits she has no formal training she has always made her own outfits from a young age and often put together her own looks for performing.

She told CNN: “I just always liked getting dressed up and playing with make-up and hair. My mom and her mom and her mom, they all made clothes … every holiday we would go to TJY, a little fabric store, and look at patterns and pick out our outfits.

“When I started with the band, when I was 17, I would waste all my time at school thinking about it (fashion) and drive to the fabric store and just find stuff.

“I didn’t know how to sew very well, it really was like using glue guns and velcro and just trying to make it work. I think it all came from the music really – just trying to find fun outfits for the stage.”

Strong statements lips are set to be the key make-up trend for the next two seasons.

By Andrea Petrou on March 25th, 2011

Strong statements lips are set to be the key make-up trend for the next two seasons.

For years, stars such as Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera have been showing off the perfect pouts with bright colours, and now the rest of the industry is following suit.

Top make-up artist Daniel Sandler exclusively told BANG Showbiz: “This spring, strong statement lips lead the way for that ‘casual glamour’ look. A vibrant lipstick is not to be reserved just for the night, casual glamour is for the day or night and the trick is to keep the skin looking fresh and light so the lips can be the focus of the face. A vibrant shade such as Boots 17′s Lasting Fix Lipstick in Pink Power (£4.29) will definitely make a statement but there are 20 shades to choose from – take your pick of the bright ones!”

Daniel – whose range of cosmetic brushes are available in Boots stores – also stressed the importance of applying make-up properly.

He said: “Make-up is about using colours that suit you and applying it properly. Practice makes perfect. Essential tools of the trade such as Professional makeup brushes from the Daniel Sandler range make application simple, especially my Base brush which effortlessly helps base glide on and blend easily. My top tip is to prime the base brush with a little water to speed up application and help prevent bad blending.”

Gwen Stefani wears red lipstick because her husband likes it

By Andrea Petrou on March 9th, 2011

Gwen Stefani wears red lipstick because her husband likes it.

The No Doubt singer – who has had huge success in the fashion world with her L.A.M.B. clothing label – revealed her trademark red lips are not a fashion statement but simply a favourite of Gavin Rossdale and also admitted she takes inspiration from “hot” girls in the street.

She said: “I don’t have a favourite brand, I switch it up all the time. I change colours too, I was wearing pink lipstick the last day but I wear red for my husband because he likes the red.

“I get inspiration from everywhere, it could be anything, it could be some hot girl walking along the street and I go ‘I wanna be like her’.”

Gwen revealed she has always been interested in fashion but doesn’t put too much time into thinking about her style.

She explained to elleuk.com: “My style is always evolving, it always has ever since I was a little girl. It’s just something that’s really organic and natural. I don’t put a lot of thought into it in the sense of ‘what am I going to do next?’ it just kind of happens.

“I have loved playing dress up since a very young age. I’m a typical girl in that I love getting dressed up to go out but when I get there I take a look around and then want to go home. I’m all about getting ready.”

Gwen Stefani’s Stripy Sunday

By alanamcverry on April 20th, 2010

Gwen1.jpgOn Sunday, Gwen Stefani stepped out in what has proved to be a highly controversial outfit. Being one who never writes before thoroughly researched, I trawled through the abundance of bloggers who had signed on to write off her look as a fashion faux-pas. I, on the other hand, intend to (in the spirit of Gwen herself) go against the grain, and stand up in applause of the stripy skirt suit, white leggings and strappy towering heels. She does again, however, incite my paranoia that she is in cahoots with Vivienne Westwood on a conspiracy to influx the fashion market with iconic draped and wrap over pieces, and 7 inch strappy heels. Despite my suspicions of a merging of interests, I feel nothing but amazement at the image of the flawless forty year old mother dressed in candy striped eccentricities. At fifteen years her junior, and no kids in tow, I still fail to match her ability to not only look flawless, fashionable and fantastic at every occasion, but also must bow down to the vixen of versatility. When I scout the stock of images that lay available to me, I find four amazingly contrasting, intriguing, and boundary pushing outfits all in the space of two weeks! This is not just fashion, this is intelligent fashion. Only three days prior, Gwen steps out in a stunning silver dress and white leggings that compliment her snow queen features. Only a week before that she manages to do the undoable, to look classy and glamorous in black hot pants and a mid-drift revealing see through top. Did I mention she is forty and has two children in tow? Finally, no stone remains unturned in Gwen’s formulation of fashion firsts, just check out the baby sailor outfit. Gold star Gwen, you have definitely produced supremely adorable accessories.
