Alice Dellal becomes the new face of the Boy Chanel handbag collection.

By Andrea Petrou on December 20th, 2011

Alice Dellal is the new face of the Boy Chanel handbag collection.

The London-based socialite, musician and model – who is known for her signature half-shaved head and punk style – was handpicked by Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld after the pair met at a photo shoot some months ago.

A Chanel spokesperson said: “[Karl Lagerfeld] had a crush on this unique, charismatic young lady, who is both a model and musician, during a photo shoot several months ago. This previously unforeseen alliance finally became self-evident. Alice Dellal represents the perfect incarnation of all that is unique about the Boy Chanel handbag collection, which strives [to be] far from conformist notions of femininity.”

Karl took the pictures for the campaign, which will be released worldwide in March.

Alice follows in the footsteps of previous Chanel handbag models including Jerry Hall, Lily Allen, Rinko Kikuchi, Blake Lively and Diane Kruger.

Alice – who is the sister of shoe designer Charlotte Dellal – has previously described her style as “tomboy” and says her dad used to be her fashion icon, even revealing her half-shaved head was inspired by him.

She said: “When I was little I was such a tomboy – I loved a baggy T-shirt and leggings. Charlotte’s always been very stylish – she used to dress me when I was really young. We’d look identical, but we’re so different. She’d be reading Agatha Christie and I, well I, wasn’t. I was always more attracted to what my Dad was wearing. Charlotte and Mum are much more similar. Charlotte would get Mum’s hand-me-downs, then I’d get them after she was done with them. If I’m feeling a bit glamorous though, I love wearing a pair of her shoes.

“Charlotte actually suggested I have it my hair done like this. My brother and my Dad always used to shave their hair and I remember thinking ‘Why can’t I do the same?’ It’s kind of ironic that it was my sister’s idea, but I would give her total credit for it. The style’s becoming more normal though – I see quite a few girls with similar hair now.”

Trend Alert: Sixties-inspired accessories

I feel like Autumn/Winter 2011 is my lucky season as it draws inspiration from all of the fashion eras I should have been around for – especially the sixties, where on the runway we saw a curious blend of super-sexy fabrics such as leather and silk, but used in ladylike, prim 60s shapes for a sex-siren effect. For anyone who hasn’t tried the vintage look before, the devil is in the detail and a few classic accessories are invaluable.

You don’t need a whole new wardrobe to make this look work for you – if you’ve got a classic trench coat or a pea coat and a shift dress, to turn it into an on-trend look team the two with a simple contrasting leather handbag, a beehive and demure court shoes. Et voila, fashion magic is happening.

We’re a little obsessed at the moment with Fiorelli’s handbag designs for Dorothy Perkins, especially their beautifully simple square handbag in contrasting nude and black leather – it’s exactly like the kind of “best” handbag that my grandmother used to horde back in the day (and my grandma always looked impeccable). Forget big totes or horribly fussy OTT clutches, as the sixties purse is going to be your new best friend from now on.

Check out the gallery above to see all of our favourite sixties-inspired accessories.

Miranda Kerr says Rosehip oil is a handbag essential

By Andrea Petrou on March 15th, 2011

Miranda Kerr counts Rosehip oil as one of the essential products every woman should keep in their handbag.

The Australian model finds the essential oil is particularly useful as a make-up remover and that it can also be a useful tool to protect against the effects of exposure to the sun and ageing.

Writing on her blog for KORA Orangics.com, she said: “Essential Fatty Acids main function is their ability to counteract the drying effects of sun exposure and other environmental influences that lead to signs of aging and age related skin damage.

“This is without a doubt, a product that every woman should have in her handbag and one that I will continue to use throughout my life.

“I use this under my moisturiser of an evening and as a makeup remover around my eyes. I also use it more frequently if my skin is particularly dry at any time.”

Miranda – who is married to Hollywood hunk Orlando Bloom – endorses a brand of Rosehip oil through her KORA Organics range, which she says has a particular blend of ingredients designed to give the optimum care for skin.

The mother-of-one added: “KORA Organics Luxurious Rosehip Oil is a carefully blended powerful Treatment Oil combining Noni Extract, Organic Rosehip, Jasmine, Rose and Pomegranate Oils.

“The combination of these additional Essential Oils work synergistically with the Rosehip Oil to provide a rich source of anti-oxidants and Essential Fatty Acids for the skin.

“We will also always represent the true season changes of the natural and organic ingredients and raw materials used in every product whilst maintaining the nutritional integrity of each ingredient and every product.”

Spring Trend: Beautiful bags

By Andrea Petrou on March 12th, 2010

Just when we thought the expensive “IT” bag had taken the hint and disappeared (well for a good few years anyway) it’s decided to return once again to the shelves.

According to Selfridges its sales of designer bags have increased by a massive 60% over the past year with many handbags queens making a beeline for the Mulberry Alexa Chung inspired satchel bag. There’s also been a huge increase in the much coveted Marc by Marc Jacobs ‘Hillier’ bag in bright purple and red City bag by Balenciaga.

However, we know, like us, many of you may not be able to fork out those thousands, or at least high hundreds you need to buy one of these bags so we’ve decided to have a little rebellion against the IT bag, giving you alternative spring 2010 trends instead with a much fairer price tag.

Ten fashionable gifts under $100

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on December 11th, 2008

10 under $100 1.jpg

We wrapped up $20 gifts under $200 and are on to the $50-$100 price range. The first thing we looked for? A fab coat for gifting to your favorite girl. We like this Gap plaid belted coat, on sale for $94.99, because the plaid can be a little holiday, a little preppy or a little indie depending on the giftee’s style. It’s a little something different for the girl who usually sticks to pea coats.

Designer Pick of the Week: Tod’s Took Shopping Media bag

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on November 18th, 2008

DPOTW Tod's handbag.jpg

We’re always on the lookout for stylish bags to take to work. To us, this means it has to hold a notebook and camera.

A little more special than the average leather tote, Tod’s Took Shopping Media bag, $1,750, has the style we look for in such a bag. Zippers and pockets look modern in new proportions on this slim

Our only question mark is the shoulder straps. No dimensions are given and we’re wondering if they’d slip over bulky winter coats or not. Or is it cute enough not to care? You decide.

New Chloe shipment in at Net-a-Porter

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on July 16th, 2008

Chloe Kerala bag.jpg

There’s a ton of new fall arrivals from Chloe on Net-a-Porter today. Along with knits and jewelry pieces, we spotted the Chloe Kerala shoulder bag, $1,070.

We can’t tout enough the usefulness of red accessories. They go with a lot more than you think, and punch up an otherwise basic outfit adding chic appeal.

It seems even Chloe is toning down the buckles and straps for fall, with a much cleaner look.

Designer Pick of the Week: Alexander McQueen biker bag

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on July 15th, 2008

Alexander Mcqueen biker bag copy.jpg

In honor of the new US-only Alexander McQueen online shop, we decided to choose another item from the designer to feature for our designer pick of the week.

This Biker Flapper shoulder bag, $1,740, really caught our eye.

A lot of times it’s the less detailed, more “everyday” designer bags we really latch on to because when you’re spending that much money, you really do want to be able to wear the bag almost every day.

Designer Pick of the Week: Mulberry Roxanna Patent Tote

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on April 15th, 2008

Mulberry bag.jpg

It greets us every time we go to the Intermixonline homepage and it has worn us down.

Sure, it’s not very fashiony and it kind of looks like the Hayden Panettiere for Dooney & Bourke bags, but we love this Mulberry Roxanna patent tote, $795.

Red patent leather accessories can be more versatile than you might think – a colorful bag is an easy way to add a pop to an otherwise boring outfit.

Designer Pick of the Week: Emilio Pucci tote

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on April 1st, 2008

Pucci tote.jpg

This bag has everything you need for spring – a bold print in a color palette that will keep you seasonally-appropriate but not too trendy. An entire wardrobe full of summer’s brights would be blinding, so a chic, toned-down piece like this Emilio Pucci tote is a perfect addition to your bag collection.
