We’re not huge fans of the ombre trend, it can look a little too retro in a bad way. But we do love this Alexis Hudson Venus Poppy ombre bag, $525. The key is that the colors coordinate well, but still contrast nicely. And using a luxe fabrication keeps the comparisons away from hypercolor T-shirts.

Entries for the Amy Butler Sew Inspired bag design contest are due this Friday, and we’ve been keeping an eye on the competition.
Our favorite is the tropical print woven bag by local Philadelphia designer Courtney Chic, at left. You can look for her designs on Etsy as well! We may be biased toward cool Philly chicks, but so be it.
If you’ve got any home-sewn projects you’re proud of, be sure and send us a picture! We consider home-sewn a compliment, not like Heidi Klum on Project Runway.
Check out CraftyCrafty for ideas an inspiration for your own DIY projects and TheBagLady for the latest handbag news.

This Dolce & Gabbana framed leather handbag is technically part of their spring offerings, but I love it for fall. The soft brown sort of modernizes the gray tones we’ve been seeing and the black trim makes it a neutral fit for any outfit. Though, at $2,175 I doubt anyone who could afford it would be caught dead in a spring ’08 bag next fall. More like spring ’09.
One thing that makes me dry heave? The thought of people wearing it with the matching shoes!

Accessories, Designer Fashions, Handbags, High End Department Stores, Yay or Nay

When we were perusing the new spring/summer Gucci arrivals at Saks Fifth Avenue, we really liked this Gucci Joy Boston bag in the thumbnail and so clicked on it. But when we got up close, we weren’t so sure. Is the floral embroidery that looks more like applique in some parts, too much or just enough? Or does the basic black and white palette make up for it? If you had the $1,950 lying around, would you buy this bag, yay or nay?

Accessories, Contests and Giveaways, How to Wear

Adyna entered our 10 Outfits for 10 Occasions contest so now not only is she in the running for a Chloe & Reese dress, a handbag from The Sak, or a dinner at Bruno Jamais, but she gets her what to wear question answered as well. Adyna picked up some summer dresses she was hoping to convert to winter wear with a satin shrug that just covered the shoulders. She has a leopard print Bebe maxi dress, but we thought we’d show you the Roberto Cavalli for H&M leopard maxi dress since we know so many of you have them. Well, you were right Adyna, it is nearly impossible to find a black satin shrug. While we found one by DKNY at our local Marshalls, it was nowhere online and we wanted to show you something we knew you could get. So we found this chiffon shrug at David’s Bridal – one of our secrets for non-bridal formalwear. Keep reading for more details on this outfit!

Do you have a holiday wardrobe dilemma? Let us help you! With 10 Outfits for 10 Occasions ShinyStyle is going to help you figure out what to wear to the work party, to meet your inlaws, to have drinks with the girls, or go into the city for a holiday spectacular, or whatever! YOU tell US. When you submit your what to wear question, you will be entered to win one of three fabulous prizes.
First, you could win one of the fabulous dresses above or any dress from Chloe & Reese’s fall line which we just raved about here. Choose from all the satins, taffetas, and wools imported from Italy, Spain, and France and find the holiday dress that is perfect for you. The frocks are available up to size 16 and normally run $300 to $400 so we’re super thankful to Chloe & Reese for this prize.

Maybe you’re a handbag girl, and who among us isn’t? Then you can cross your fingers for this Dakota hobo in luggage from The Sak. The $159 bag is a lucious brown leather with buckle and tassle detailing that will definitely take you into spring and beyond. We’re honestly all a little jealous and would like to keep this bag for ourselves instead of handing it over to one of you lucky readers, but we will.

If you need a great excuse to get dressed up, you’ll love winning a $125 gift certificate to Bruno Jamais Restaurant Club which brings the French Riviera to the Upper East side and is now open Sunday nights for dinner, dancing, drinks and a reduced-price menu. For more information or reservations call (212) 396-3444.
Keep reading for rules and how to enter.

SoHo is getting filled to the brim with new designer stores opening each month. On December 8th, renowned British designer Karen Millen will be opening an American flagship store in Manhattan’s premiere designer district, at 112-114 Prince Street. The official launch party will be in March for the debut of Millen’s new spring collection on March 12th. The 2,800-square-foot space has an open, airy feel with wood floors, matte-finished glass and original accents of the building from the when it used to be the Mimi Fertz gallery.

There’s a fine line between casual and sloppy, and this bag mich just fall upon it. First Juicy Couture created the velour tracksuit and now the bag? I am not sure this is a necessary progression and it’s one that’s sure to leave a sour taste in the mouthes of fashionista’s across the world. If I think really hard then maybe I can see the benefits of a velour tracksuit, I guess it’s comfortable at least. But do handbags require comfort? If you happen to think the idea is fab, then check out Neiman Marcus where the bag is available in pink and cocoa for $123.

We’re generally of the school that one wild accessory with an otherwise basic outfit is more chic than a head-to-toe print or over-the-top bling. And this is definitely the accessory to make that statement with. While up close the “leopard” spots look a bit like blotchy bumble bees, we don’t think that will keep anyone from clutching this Savannah Austrian Crystal Minaudiere, $550. This would go perfect with your little black dress and some red heels for a sexy look that doesn’t require a lot of skin. With a leather lining and shoulder strap, this piece has all the luxe details you desire.

Fashionista Eleni tipped us off to the design your own bag page over at Freddy&Ma. There are a good amount of custom bag and create-your-own Web sites out there but I could tell from the get go that the selection was what set this one apart. With 10 styles, 5 trim colors, a whopping 75 gorgeous patterns, a choice of colors/paterns for different panels, and silver or gold hardware you can literally create the bag of your dreams, and one to match every outfit! I think there are people who would pay a lot more than $340, the cost of the bowler we created at left, for that freedom. This is a major time consumer, so we thought Friday afternoon was the perfect time to share it. Enjoy!

I immediately fell in love with this Alexander McQueen “Elvie’ bag (left) when I saw it on sister-site thebaglady.tv. The sharp pleats in the brown patent leather and metal buckle are a strong, unusual look, a perfect bag to go with the looser menswear looks this fall. But at $1,495 at net-a-porter.com it’s not exactly in most people’s price range. If you’re looking for a cute bag for fall for under $100, try the EXROILIM satchel from Aldo at aldoshoes.com (right) for $50. A take on the doctor’s bag, the double straps, buckles, and brown leather would also go well with slouchy trousers and a vest.

This was my favorite episode of “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style.” Tim and Veronica took a pediatrician with a very young attitude and made her all grown up! Stephanie from New York was very much into Care Bears and toys, and horizontal (gasp!) striped dresses that made her petite frame look akin to an 11-year-old (and they were just scary). She was looking for a new look for an ex-boyfriend’s wedding that was fast approaching. Tim helped her find dresses and skirts that elongated her legs so she appeared taller, had her pick new eyeglass frames that enhanced her face and chose dresses that made her look and feel sexy and confident. Tim advised three accessories one should always have. They are a great watch–nothing too gimmicky–I love Cartier; a decent handbag (I’ll take any bag, really, but I love the Coach totes), and classic black or brown pumps in leather (surprisingly, my latest pair is from Mandee’s, for $48, a happy bargain).
