Alice Dellal becomes the new face of the Boy Chanel handbag collection.

By Andrea Petrou on December 20th, 2011

Alice Dellal is the new face of the Boy Chanel handbag collection.

The London-based socialite, musician and model – who is known for her signature half-shaved head and punk style – was handpicked by Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld after the pair met at a photo shoot some months ago.

A Chanel spokesperson said: “[Karl Lagerfeld] had a crush on this unique, charismatic young lady, who is both a model and musician, during a photo shoot several months ago. This previously unforeseen alliance finally became self-evident. Alice Dellal represents the perfect incarnation of all that is unique about the Boy Chanel handbag collection, which strives [to be] far from conformist notions of femininity.”

Karl took the pictures for the campaign, which will be released worldwide in March.

Alice follows in the footsteps of previous Chanel handbag models including Jerry Hall, Lily Allen, Rinko Kikuchi, Blake Lively and Diane Kruger.

Alice – who is the sister of shoe designer Charlotte Dellal – has previously described her style as “tomboy” and says her dad used to be her fashion icon, even revealing her half-shaved head was inspired by him.

She said: “When I was little I was such a tomboy – I loved a baggy T-shirt and leggings. Charlotte’s always been very stylish – she used to dress me when I was really young. We’d look identical, but we’re so different. She’d be reading Agatha Christie and I, well I, wasn’t. I was always more attracted to what my Dad was wearing. Charlotte and Mum are much more similar. Charlotte would get Mum’s hand-me-downs, then I’d get them after she was done with them. If I’m feeling a bit glamorous though, I love wearing a pair of her shoes.

“Charlotte actually suggested I have it my hair done like this. My brother and my Dad always used to shave their hair and I remember thinking ‘Why can’t I do the same?’ It’s kind of ironic that it was my sister’s idea, but I would give her total credit for it. The style’s becoming more normal though – I see quite a few girls with similar hair now.”

Dannii Minogue refuses to throw away handbags

By Andrea Petrou on December 7th, 2011

Dannii Minogue refuse to throw out her handbags.

The Australian beauty says she won’t get rid of her designer bags, unless they are damaged, because she will always find a use for them.

She said: “I was on a 10-week waiting list for my beaded bag years ago, and it cost a bomb. I still love it. Unless handbags are damaged, it feels like sacrilege to chuck them. If you loved them once, you’ll surely have occasion to use them again.”

As well as investing in designer handbags Dannii, 40, is a huge fan of good quality luggage as it can last for ages and ages.

She told Britain’s Glamour magazine: “My Louis Vuitton roller bag was a 30th birthday gift, and it still looks brand new. I use it on every single flight I take. I can pack so much stuff in it and it takes the weight off my shoulders.”

Tilda Swinton joins a host of celebrities to auction their handbags for charity

By Andrea Petrou on November 24th, 2011

Tilda Swinton has joined a host of celebrities to auction their handbags for charity.

The generous We Need To Talk About Kevin star has donated two designer handbags, one from Chanel and another by Victor & Rolf to Save the Children’s ‘Bag to Save a Life’ appeal which will launch tomorrow.

Encouraging people to get involved, Tilda said: “Bid high! Bid so much higher than you think you will or can! Think of a dicey number and double it. And then double that. No fancy bag can ever carry what your generosity will mean to the children it will help to live.

“Make this beautiful object truly valuable by investing real money in real life – and carry the evidence with pride. Don’t count the cost. Think of it as paying something back for all there is to be grateful for in your days.”

Other celebrities including Sienna Miller, Florence Welch, Gemma Arterton, Georgia May Jagger, Annie Lennox, Minnie Driver and Anna Friel have also given a selection of designer handbags from Christian Louboutin, Mulberry, Jimmy Choo, Miu Miu, Prada to the appeal.

The Bag to Save a Life online auction is part of the No Child Born to Die campaign to stop the deaths of more than eight million children in some of the world’s poorest countries every year.

The online auction is live from tomorrow and will close on Sunday December 4th. Visit www.savethechildren.org.uk/bagtosave to place a bid.

Victoria Beckham “knows a lot about handbags” says designer Katie Hillier

By Andrea Petrou on November 3rd, 2011

Victoria Beckham “knows a lot about handbags”.

Katie Hillier – the designer who has worked alongside the star on her luxury bag collection for the past two years – thinks people in the fashion industry need to “rethink their opinions” of the former Spice Girls singer because she is “super-smart”.

She said: “Victoria is super-smart – people need to rethink their opinions of her. She knows a lot about handbags. In fact, she knows a lot about everything to do with fashion.

“Working with her is not only really good fun; it’s satisfying because the product is so amazing. It’s hard to design a bag that speaks for itself.”

Katie – who also designs for the likes of Marc by Marc Jacobs and Loewe – explained as the 37-year-old singer-turned-designer is so focused on the “quality” of her garments, she enjoys working on a line that “means something”.

She added in an interview with the London Evening Standard newspaper: “With Victoria, it’s all about the quality. I get emails from her saying, ‘The little inside pocket doesn’t have the right stitching.’

“Our focus isn’t on designing a logo but on finding the right leather. I enjoy working on something that I know means something.”

Handbag designer Luella Bartley says Alexa Chung dresses for herself

By Andrea Petrou on October 25th, 2011

Alexa Chung dresses for herself, according to handbag designer Luella Bartley.

The British model-and-presenter is known for her unique laidback style and Luella says she is a classic example of how English women should look.

Luella – who the best-selling Gisele style bag for Mulberry in 2002 – told the Observer newspaper: “English women are more concerned with looking cool and interesting than sexy or alluring. Alexa dresses in a very stylish way that is not about being sexy. I like to think she dresses for herself. That’s quite English. Men don’t come into it in a way. English women are feminists without thinking about it. We spend more time trying to make statements than looking nice. But not all English girls are like that – there are still the Cheryl Coles.”

And despite designing an iconic bag, Luella – whose own label closed in 2009 – insists she’s not a fan of It-bags.

She said: “It seems awful – I mean the It-bag, that’s the beginning of the end of culture in general. My label Luella was supposed to be lighthearted and all about individuality – not about the most wanted handbags.”

Katie Holmes gets style inspiration from her daughter Suri

By emilyborrett on August 8th, 2011

Katie Holmes has admitted that she often takes inspiration from her tiny daughter Suri’s already refined luxurious sense of style.

Being the super-child of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Suri has developed an expensive taste for designer dresses, ladylike handbags and high heels. (To be honest it’s no surprise that Katie digs her daughter’s style so much when little Suri dresses like a 40-year old PTA member.)

Katie said about her daughter’s budding love for fashion, “My daughter has been choosing her own outfits since she was two. We go to fabric stores and sew together … Suri is my style critic. I know I look good when Suri asks if she can have my outfit when she’s older. Suri is magical when it comes to clothes – she’s quite an artist.”

Nicole Richie plans to expand her handbag line every season

By Andrea Petrou on July 4th, 2011

Nicole Richie plans to expand her handbag line every season.

The socialite’s House of Harlow 1960 line have unveiled a 14-piece handbag collection – ranging from a $150 red hard-cased crocodile print clutch to $625 taupe and ivory burn-out pony hair hobo – that will debut next month and Nicole has promised to expand the range further over time.

She said: “Handbags have always been a part of the equation since we first launched the House of Harlow 1960 brand.

“We just needed to make sure all of the components were aligned before setting foot into that category. The collection is quite small in terms of the styles we are launching with. I wanted to make sure that each piece is special and then be able to grow it slowly and organically season after season.”

The seventies-inspired collection incorporates materials such as vintage leather, calf hair and velvet, along with fringe detailing, along with toggles, studs and jaguar head hardware, and Nicole says she always tries to listen to what her customers wants when creating each piece.

She told WWD: “When I design, I always try to design pieces that are universal, meaning anyone can wear and carry it. At this stage of my design process, I really try to gather direct feedback from my customers, whether through in-store personal appearances, my web site, twitter or Facebook.

It really helps me when they provide me with their desires, feedback and comments on what they are looking for, so I can try my best to cater to their needs, yet stay true to the brand’s identity.”

The House of Harlow 1960 handbag collection will be available at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Shopbop.com.

Mischa Barton refuses to spend lots of money on a trendy handbag

By Andrea Petrou on April 12th, 2011

Mischa Barton refuses to spend lots of money on a trendy handbag.

The actress – who has her own line of bags – says she doesn’t see the point in splashing out on a “handbag-of-the moment” and would rather save her cash for a classic item.

She said: “I think handbags are a great area to work in because you can do anything with them. They can really change an outfit. You always look at girls’ bags and you don’t want to spend a fortune on them. You want them to be functional, have pockets and work, but you don’t want it to be a piece of c**p. I don’t want to spend a fortune on crazy of-the-moment handbags. If it’s going to cost me like $600 to get a handbag of-the-moment then I’m probably not even going to bother to do it. I just have my classics that I like.”

Mischa believes the success of her handbag line is due to the fact a lot of the pieces are stylish yet affordable.

She told online blog Zap2it: “I think what really works for them is that we’re really able to keep the price point quite low, but still funky and cool. Some of them are not supposed to last forever. They’re more like fun bags, and then we have the more serious ones. We’ve been working on the proper like, doctor bags, the ones that do last a long time.”

Safor launches affordable handbag range, fans include Gwyneth Paltrow

By Andrea Petrou on March 31st, 2011

Safor is launching a new affordable handbag line.

The luxury British leather and exotic skins accessories label – which counts Gwyneth Paltrow among its many fans – has revealed plans to expand the line and make it more accessible for women in their 20s.

Founder and designer Sarah Forsyth told vogue.co.uk: “It was quite couture-based. What we’ve done is bring in a new line – it’ll still be very classic and high end but we’re hoping it’ll appeal to a broader demographic. It’s been designed with 20-somethings in mind.

“With the economic climate as it is, I wanted to create pieces that everyone could buy into, not just the wealthy elite. The couture line will still exist and we’ll keep adding new leather skins and new fabrics to keep it fresh and exciting.”

Sarah also revealed ‘Country Strong’ star Gwyneth was so delighted with a clutch bag the company sent her that she wrote a note thanking them for the gift.

She said: “I actually sent her this purple and blue faux lizard clutch not thinking I’d hear anything back and then we saw a picture of her wearing it. We then received a handwritten reply from her saying she loved it and thanking me very much -it was very unexpected indeed!”

Victoria Beckham to design a range of handbags

By admin on August 9th, 2010

She’s one of the most stylish women in the world and already has a successful line of dresses (worn by celebs), jeans and sunglasses, but Victoria Beckham has now bagged herself another collection.

The singer, come designer, has announced she will now be creating a line of handbags (it was always bound to happen considering her personal collection of bags total to a huge £1.5million) with the help of top designer Katie Hillier, who has worked her designing magic on some of the world’s most recognisable handbags including Marc Jacobs, Luella and Stella McCartney.

Posh’s spokesperson told Mail Online: “There is a bag line in development.”

“Katie has consulted on the technical aspects of bag construction in line with her experience in the industry.

“This collection is not a collaboration – as with all her ranges, Victoria has sought the best consultants to ensure the highest level of quality at manufacture for her designs.”

We wonder if we’ll be able to afford one.

Highstreet VS Deigner: Max C and Chanel

By Andrea Petrou on December 4th, 2009

Max.JPGHigh street stores are becoming more style savvy, creating clothes and accessories, which almost mirror those designed by high end brands.

Yes the fabric may not be as plush, and they are probably more prone to wear and tear, but, unless they’re classic wardrobe must haves, do you really need anything more? After all fashion changes so quickly.

So we were really pleased when we spotted this Max C bag, which is similar to Chanel’s quilted bowling bag. We would be more than happy to have this stylish high street alternative on our shoulder especially when you consider the whopping price difference.

Max C comes in at a very reasonable £40 compared to Chanel’s £860. Leaving us more than enough left over to get matching shoes and outfits.

Christmas party outfits: Clutch bags

By lotte on November 18th, 2009

Are you the type of girl who only takes their essentials with them to a party, effortlessly knowing exactly what you’ll need that night? Or are you, like me, someone who can’t work out which bits of makeup to pack, or whether or not you really need to stuff your digital camera into that elegant little clutch bag? Unfortunately, clutches are often the only way to really perfect a special outfit, because there’s something just that little bit more classy about casually tucking your bag under your arm while you sip at a martini.

So, despite their inconvenient size, here are some of the most desirable evening clutches on the high street now. They’re big enough for your phone, keys, credit card, compact and lipstick (which is, by the way, supposedly all you’ll need). These clutches are all party-ready, but most of them will be wearable well after Christmas is over – classic designs and detailing means a few of them are suitable for daywear too.
