Dame Helen Mirren is the top style icon for women over 50

By Andrea Petrou on December 19th, 2011

Dame Helen Mirren is the top style icon for women over 50.

The fashionable actress, 66, claimed the accolade after clothing brand CC quizzed 1,000 women for the poll and they believe the results show that “age isn’t a barrier to style or confidence”.

A spokesperson said: “These results show that age really isn’t a barrier to style or confidence. In fact, it can be quite the opposite.

“It’s inspiring to see that many women over fifty are comfortable in their self, confident in their style and brave enough to explore new clothing options.

“Dame Helen Mirren has as much style, grace and elegance off screen as she does on it and is a fitting icon for the women of her generation.

“All too often we are bombarded with images of youth and temporary trends, so it’s great to see such a varied list filled with women of real class.”

A host of famously fashionable veterans completed the top five including model Twiggy, 62, ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ star Joanna Lumley, 65, 63-year-old singer Lulu and Dame Judi Dench, 77.

Fashion designer Victoria Beckham, 37, was a surprising inclusion on the list, just outside the top five.

The spokesperson added: “Victoria Beckham has proven she carries universal appeal and her image over the past few years has altered from high glamour to a more classic look which appeals to women of all ages.

“The results show women in their fifties aren’t afraid to embrace younger styles when they’re done the right way.”

Dame Helen Mirren tops list of Hotter Than Ever Women Over 50

By Andrea Petrou on May 27th, 2011

Dame Helen Mirren has topped a list of Hotter Than Ever Women Over 50.

The 65-year-old actress – who is renowned for her enviable figure – was named number one in the study by home shopping retailer for 50-plus women, isme.com beating off competition from 61-year-old model Twiggy and actress Joanna Lumley, 64, who placed second and third in the list.

Singer Lulu, 62, Kim Cattrall, and actress and director Emma Thompson, 52, were also voted into the top 10.

However, Helen is unlikely to be too impressed with the accolade, recently revealing she hates when people focus on her looks.

She said: “We have to let go of this c**p. It creates even more pressure on women, and I certainly don’t want to be a part of that. I’m not beautiful; I clean up nice.

“Why don’t we talk about the fact, for example, that I just did ‘Arthur’, and the cinematographer was a woman, the film operator was a woman, the whole camera team were women? That’s where we should be putting our attention. The fact that I look good at the age I am is bloody irrelevant.”

Scarlett Johansson, Lea Michele and Catherine Zeta-Jones turn up for the Tony Awards

By Andrea Petrou on June 14th, 2010

While we were crowding round the BBQs, eating burgers and cheering on England, the US stars had more demure events to be thinking about.

This weekend saw the 61st annual Tony Awards, which celebrate the best in American theatre and although they are not as well known as perhaps the Oscars or Baftas, A-class celebrities still strutted their fashion stuff on the red carpet.

Catherine Zeta-Jones accepted her best actress in a musical award for her Broadway debut in the musical A Little Night Music, in a baby blue strapless organza gown complete with beading, while Lucy Liu looked went for cute and girly in a pink frilled Marchesa frock.

Scarlett Johansson went for celeb favourite Elie Saab opting for a black beaded gown, which she showed off when she went to pick up her award for Best Performance in a Play by a Featured actress while Paula Abdul opted for frills and fishtail in a Tony Ward Couture frock.

However, not everyone went for beaded and bare skin. Naomi Watts took a risk in a nude suit style fock with long sleeves by RM by Roland Mouret gown that kept bare skin at a minimum while Cate Blanchett took an even bigger one in a silver Armani Prive suit.
Thankfully we think the risk paid off.

We also think a special fashion mention goes out to Helen Mirren who, like Scarlett, opted for a black frock to wow on the night, and Glee star Lea Michele who shone in sunshine yellow.

Oscar 2010: Were we right about Helen Mirren’s red carpet dress?

By Andrea Petrou on March 8th, 2010

Helen Mirren Oscars 2010.jpg

Earlier today we set about predicting what Helen Mirren would be wearing for this year’s Oscars. Looking back at her previous trends, which screamed elegance and bared her trademark sheer sleeves we thought we’d definitely see these trends tonight. We also predicted she would be wearing Lacroix.

Well, we we’re right about the frock. Like fellow Brit Kate Winslet, Helen also opted for silver, but went for a straight dress, covered with a layer of organza and, yes, you guessed it beaded sheer sleeves.

However, we weren’t so bang on with the designer. Instead of Lacroix Helen opted for Badgley Mischka, a designer she is familiar with.

Well, we suppose one out of two isn’t bad is it?

Oscars 2010: Best dressed

By Andrea Petrou on March 7th, 2010

We have to admit we were very impressed with the Oscar 2010 dresses, and for once in any awards event there were hardly any shockers.

However, we decided to whittle it down to six this year (and believe us it’s taken alot of time to decide) or we’d have to put nearly every attendee in.

So who made the list and why? First on the list is Brit newcomer (and Lauren’s fashion favourite) Carey Mulligan, who really stood out in a cutting edge Prada gown. However, she didn’t let the red carpet glamour swallow her style. Her dress was embellished with tiny metal keys and pairs of scissors.

And it seems the Brits are on a style roll because coming up a close second isKate Winslet.

We also have to include Sarah Jessica Parker who wore a rather unique Chanel Couture frock. Ladies be warned, the “neck strap” trend will be coming to a highstreet store near you very soon.

However it would be unfair to give a special mention to Sandra Bullock, who picked up the award for Best Actress for her role in Blind Side, and for once showed she really had style in a vintage fabric beaded long dress.

Coming up forth and fifth are Meryl Streep, who showed that just like her Devil wears Prada role, she really has a sense of style in a white cowl neck dress, and Demi more who wore an on-trend nude ruffled frock.

Do you agree with our decisions? Leave your comments below and let us know.

Oscar 2010 red carpet predictions: Helen Mirren

By Andrea Petrou on March 7th, 2010

This year iconic British actress Helen Mirren has been nominated for her role in The Last Station. Avid followers of Mirren’s red carpet style will know that the actress always looks elegant in beaded and sleeved frocks made of taffeta, silk and sheer fabrics, which really give her the edge over some other stars.

For the 2007 Oscars the 64 year old, who claims she is “always a mess” unless walking the red carpet, opted for a cream and gold rouched frock by Christian Lacroix with three quarter length beaded sleeves, which she teamed up with Jimmy Choos. She carried on the tradition in 2008 where she opted for a an elegant vibrant red custom-made Georges Chakra satin gown, embellished with Swarovski crystal sleeves and again in 2009 when her slinky frock screamed sophistication, and dare we say, royalty.

So will Dame Helen continue the elegant theme tonight?

We have a strong suspicion she might, and if the rumour mill is anything to go by she may be wearing Christian Lacroix. However it may not be a new style; apparently she asked her publicist if she could pull an old Lacroix out of her closet that she wore to the Oscars a couple years ago.

We have to admit we like her thinking.

View the gallery below to see some more of Helen’s red carpet outfits.

Heidi Klum, Helen Mirren, Anne Hathaway, and Katherine Heigl don red for the Oscars

By Andrea Thatcher on February 24th, 2008

red%20dresses.jpgClick image to enlarge.

Red was definitely the stand-out color on the red carpet, and the dresses were so different that each of the ladies really stood out as well.

Heidi Klum was one of the first out of the gate in a dramatic Galliano gown. Maybe either the collar or the big train would have been enough, both together seem a little bit much. But Heidi carries it off regally.

The purple ones – Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Helen Mirren, and Felicity Huffman on the Emmy red carpet

By Andrea Thatcher on September 16th, 2007

Purple.jpg

Plenty of ladies wore shades of lavender and purple on tonight’s red carpet for the 59th Annual Emmy Awards. The “New Adventures of Old Christine” and “Seinfeld” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the no-need-for-an-introduction Helen Mirren, and Desperate Housewife Felicity Huffman (in David Meister) all showed off some cleavage in varying hues. The hues of purple varied, not the hues of cleavage … wow, I’m as funny as Ryan Seacrest.
