Salma Hayek was devastated when she was banned from wearing high-heels.

By Andrea Petrou on October 26th, 2011

Salma Hayek was devastated when she was banned from wearing high-heels.

The Mexican actress tore two ligaments in her foot last year and as part of her recovery she had to forgo her beloved stilettos, a wardrobe restriction she struggled with.

During an appearance on ‘The David Letterman Show’, the 5ft 1in beauty said: “The worst part about it is you can’t wear heels. You’ve never been a Mexican short woman! This is tragic. I often say, had it not been for high heels, I would still be in Coatzacoalcos with 10 kids!”

Salma, 45, says doctors are keen for her to undergo surgery to correct her foot, but says she’s too scared to.

She revealed: “They want me to have surgery but I’m not keen. I don’t like surgery.”

And it’s not just surgery on her foot that Salma is worried about.

The 45-year-old star – who has a four-year-old daughter Valentina, with husband Francois-Henri Pinault – says cosmetic surgery gives her the “heebie-jeebies”.

She said: “When I was 16, I looked 19. When I was 19, I looked 25. But I got stuck on 25 – thank God! – until I was 35. So that was good. But it’s also important to take care of your skin because if you’re not careful, one day you’ll wake up and a spider will have taken over your face and you’ll be full of lines.

“I have no Botox. The thought of a needle coming to my forehead, it really gives me the heebie-jeebies. So I’d rather put on my creams. It’s fun, it smells good, and it’s relaxing. Am I opposed to doing it later? I don’t know. I want to see how far I can go.”

Christian Louboutin is releasing a style book about his designs

By emilyborrett on September 22nd, 2011

For anyone who has a little bit of an Achilles heel when it comes to, well, heels, there’s a new glossy hardback coming out that you’ll definitely want on your coffee table as the legendary shoe designer Christian Louboutin has revealed he’s planning to release a book on his iconic designs.

Christian Louboutin is like the holy grail of designer heels with his legendary red-bottomed soles, so we can’t wait to take a peek at the new book (currently it’s missing a title, but hopefully Christian will find the time to think one up).

The book is planned to be divided into six chapters, with the first showing the designer’s work earliest in his career, including pieces that created for Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent and the other chapters showing his inspirations, the international stores, and gushing contributions from some of his loveliest, most famous friends – including Dita Von Teese and Kristen Scott Thomas.

We hope it’s out soon – we want it to go riiiiiiight to the top of our Christmas list IMMEDIATELY.

Cheryl Cole wants to create her own fashion line

By emilyborrett on September 21st, 2011

What is it about celebrities wanting to have a little bit of a go at absolutely everything these days? First we have Katie Price turning her hand to editor as she launches a magazine that is, hilariously, all about her, and now Cheryl Cole has revealed that her new shoe collection has inspired her to turn to fashion design.

Cheryl, who’s just launched her new shoe collection with the website StylistPick.com, said when asked about a potential foray into fashion: “Do you know what? I wouldn’t rule it out, actually. I have loved designing these shoes. I haven’t enjoyed a project so much in a long time. So, yes, it might be the start of something.”

To me there’s something mildly annoying about celebrities trying to turn their hands to creative industries such as fashion – other popular celebrity sidelines being acting, writing novels and perfumes – as if all the auto-tuning and clever styling that these people have has made them suddenly believe their own hype. Or am I just being mean about Cheryl Cole? Maybe I am just grumpy today.

Who knows if Cheryl has it in her to be a fashion designer. Maybe, just maybe, she will be like Victoria Beckham and amaze us. But then again, maybe it will just be crap.

Cheryl Cole has designed her own shoe line

By emilyborrett on September 15th, 2011

Cheryl Cole has made her first dainty steps into the world of fashion design, as she’s just designed her first ever shoe collection.

Cheryl, everyone’s favourite Geordie lass, is collaborating with the fashion site StylistPick.com to create her new line of limited edition shoes – and it’ll go on sale in December. We’re usually sceptical about celebrities attempting fashion design but we might leave a space on our Christmas lists, just in case..

StylistPick’s creative officer Juliet Warkentin said: “We are thrilled to be working with Cheryl. Cheryl is the style icon and is amazingly warm, a quality that has made her the nation’s favourite. We believe that the launch will have a huge fashion impact; establishing fashion’s greatest influencer as a major force in fashion design and further democratising fashion.”

Lovely little Cheryl has remembered that her fans aren’t as rich as she is and made the collection affordable as well as glam, having overseen the entire design process herself “from concept to design and packaging”.

Girls, it’s time to start learning how to totter in our heels like Cheryl. ARE YOU READY?

Victoria Beckham is banned from wearing heels at New York Fashion Week

By emilyborrett on August 23rd, 2011

Victoria Beckham might feel a little out of her comfort zone at the upcoming New York Fashion Week, as a doctor has advised her against wearing her usual high heels at the event for health reasons.

Victoria, who has in the past confessed to not being able to live without her heels, recently suffered a slip disc after giving birth to her new baby girl Harper and has been warned by doctors to avoid stilettos and the like to stop the problem getting worse. But Dr, it’s NEW YORK FASHION WEEK! She can’t wear flats!

A source apparently close to Victoria spoke about the high-heels ban: “Victoria’s not had an easy past few weeks. But she’s a trooper and after getting the all-clear to attend Fashion Week – provided her back doesn’t significantly deteriorate – she has been advised to avoid heels. Although her heel-wearing wasn’t the cause of her back problems, stilettos don’t help her condition. Victoria has been frantically surfing the web for an acceptable pair of flats, ones which don’t make her look like a golf club.”

Mama Beckham isn’t too pleased with the prognosis, having previously expressed her hatred for wearing ballerina flats. She said: “I beyond hate ballerina flats – I can’t even walk in them.” However, she’s sucking it up and focusing on getting better for Harper and the rest of the Beckham clan.

When you get a chance, Posh, you should actually put your feet up – we can’t wait to see the new collection either.

Manolo Blahnik redesigned Kate Moss’ wedding shoes five times

By emilyborrett on August 23rd, 2011

Kate Moss may have looked like a floaty chiffon-clad gypsy angel on her wedding day, but apparently she was a bit of a choosy Bridezilla in the run-up to the big day as iconic shoe designer Manolo Blahnik has confessed that he had to re-design her bridal heels five times before she was happy with the result. Wowsers.

Manolo, who is one of the biggest designer shoe names around, happily created Kate a special pair of heels for her big day to wear with her Galliano gown but admits that it wasn’t the easiest job he’s ever had.

The designer told WWD: “We did them five times to get them the way she wanted. My workers are the best people. I wouldn’t be here without them. The shoes arrived the day before and there were too many jewels on the heel because of the long train, so we had women working up until midnight to change it.”

Well, we suppose if you’re one of the most famous models in Britain, not any old pair of Blahniks will do. The shoe designer, who’s been a friend of Moss’ for a long time, then went on to say how thrilled he was with her final look. “I’ve known Kate since she was a little girl. The wedding was divine. Kate has such a presence. You just have to feel it.”

Sienna Miller has donated her favourite shoes to charity

By emilyborrett on August 18th, 2011

The actress Sienna Miller has donated her favourite pairs of shoes to the charity “Small Steps Project”, which raises awareness of children in Cambodia working on landfill sites.

Along with other celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Colin Firth and Eva Green, Sienna will be auctioning off her very favourite shoes, with the profit going to the Small Steps Project, at the Royal Society of Medicine on the 12th of October.

The charity was started by celebrity journalist Amy Hanson, who was shocked by the poverty and living conditions in Cambodia when she visited in 2008. She said about her time there: “When I went to Cambodia, I witnessed huge landfills filled with our waste and excess packaging where the local children would look for scraps to sell in order to support their families. Ideally we want to raise enough money to get the children away from the rubbish dumps and into schools, but for now we’re focusing on providing durable boots to prevent the children from harming themselves with the shards of glass and sharp objects on the ground.”

A very worthy cause. If you happen to be the same shoe size as Sienna, and you’ve got money to burn then get down to that auction in October!

Flat shoes are a no, no for Christina Hendricks

By Andrea Petrou on April 11th, 2011

Christina Hendricks never wears flat shoes.

The ‘Mad Men’ actress – who is famed for her curvaceous figure – revealed she is a huge fan of high heels and if she is not wearing them she usually goes barefoot.

She said: “I’m either barefoot or in high heels. I’ve fallen madly in love with some Charlotte Olympia heels- they’ve got a big bow on them. If I find a pair that’s comfy and high, then I pick them up.”

Christina is not just passionate about shoes, she has very specific tastes when it comes to clothes and prefers to wear eclectic items that show off her waist where possible.

She explained to Britain’s InStyle magazine: “My day-to-day style is very feminine and eclectic. I like to mix vintage with new or tough with sweet. My ‘Mad men’ character Joan is a lot more streamlined than I am, I like a little bit more romance in my clothes.

“I know from the show that it’s good to show off my waist. It’s a nice quality I have. I’m drawn to things with a nice waistline, but if something doesn’t have one, then I tailor it so it does.”

We have plenty of well-dressed, chic celebrities whose style we want to emulate, but there aren’t many stars that come as bonkers as American singer Nicki Minaj, whose style is an incredible blend of Disney-ish pops of colour, fierce ghetto styling and alien gravity-defying hair. The ghetto Lady Gaga, minus a few bizarre personal habits and behaviours, we always look forward to seeing what Nicki will wear to the next big red-carpet blowout.

Unlike Lady Gaga, whose fashion movements we literally cannot predict at all, we always know that whatever Miss Minaj wears next will be fabulous. A huge advocate of skin-tight clothing which shows off her frankly unbelievable curves (the woman is a real-life Barbie doll), she’s always spotted in figure-hugging jumpsuits and Herve Leger dresses which are teamed up with stonking great heels and an amazing wig. We especially love her blonde, leopard-printed wig – see a whole array of amazing ‘dos in the gallery above. Nicki Minaj, we salute you!

Trend Alert: Our top five skyscraper summer sandals

By Andrea Petrou on June 18th, 2010

Yesterday we gave you a gallery of our top 5 flat summer shoes, which are hot this season. However we know many of you out there like a little bit of height with your summer outfits, after all heels can add inches and turn a maxi dress or a playsuit from a casual to a smart outfit.

There’s a huge choice of heels out on the highstreet at the moment ranging from clogs, as shown at Chanel’s SS2010 shows and worn by Alexa Chung, to platforms, which give a nod to the 80s trends that are infiltrating this season’s style.

However, one of our favourite looks at the moment are sexy strappy sandals, which give a nod to the gladiator trend. Team up with shorts for a smart festival look (although you may have problems if it’s raining) or a maxi dress or skirt for a sophisticated BBQ look.

Here’s our pick of the top 5.

Victoria Beckham advised to have foot surgery after years of wearing high heels

By Andrea Petrou on November 27th, 2009
David Beckham and James Bond celebrate the launch of Adidas Originals

We knew there was a reason why we stuck to flat shoes most of the time. They may not look as good as heels, and next to our friends who can bear the pain, we’re also a darn sight shorter.

However, at least we won’t have to worry about getting problems like Victoria Beckham.
According to rumours the Spice Girl turned fashion designer, has been advised to have surgery to remove bunions on her feet after years of wearing skyscraper heels.

But despite the warnings Victoria has pulled out every trick on the book, including doing exercises and having insoles put into her shoes, to prevent having the op as it means she won’t be able to wear heels for a good few months.

Now that’s true fashion dedication.

Review : Scholl Party Feet Snowflake Limited Edition

By Andrea Petrou on September 9th, 2009

Scholl Party Feet Snowflake Invisible Gel Cushion.JPGNow I’m not a girl that can wear heels, in fact many of my beautiful boots and sandals have lain discarded in my wardrobe for a number of years and been slowly replaced by flats, flip flops and trainers.

Even going out means an extra pair of flats to change into after a couple of hours. So when Scholl sent me it’s new Party Feet snowflake limited edition range, which are placed in the front of your shoe to prevent that horrible pain you get when wearing heels, I was understandably unconvinced.

Yes they looked nice and sparkly but do they really do the job? I took them on a night out with my heels to find out.

Putting them into my shoes was a bit tricky. They were extremely sticky and stuck to every part of the inside of my shoe and when I had finally got past that hurdle the next problem arose.
Because they sit in the front of your shoe, they make the gap between your feet smaller, meaning the shoes can feel a little tight. I was ready to pack my trusty flip flops but I soldiered on.

For research purposes (of course) I decided to go to a bar, where seating is a luxury, meaning I would be have to stand all night. An hour into the eve and I felt the familiar twinge of pain, that only standing with heels on would give.

However, I was surprised after that I didn’t feel a thing, especially during the 10 minute walk home, which normally would have crippled me had I not had the Party feet on.

The real test came the next day however. I don’t know about you but when I wear heels the night before, I always get pains in my calves, however, it seems the Party Feet did actually work, because there was none of that the morning after.

The only thing I would say is that the tops of my feet were a little bit sore from where they had been pushing on the tops of my shoes.

Party Feet have made me think again about wearing heels, and I’m pleased to say they actually did work and because they can be used again and again I think I’ve found my sole mate for life.

We’ve set aside our stilettos (sometimes) but now our flip flops too?

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on June 9th, 2008

Flip flop.jpg

Most of us think we’re giving our feet a break when we slip on flip flops for a majority of the summer, but apparently we’re wrong.

They’re so comfy compared to our sky-high heels we like to wear our thong and flat sandals as often as we can, and that’s the problem according to New York City podiatrist Dr. Oliver Zong.

According to Dr. Zong, “a soft-soled shoe generally does not allow the foot to naturally roll from heel to toe since it generally has a softer midfoot – and the lack of support will generally cause more injury then good.”

For more info and a comfortable sandal suggestion that’s good for your feet, keep reading.
