The circus performers modelled high-street fashions for the launch of High Street Fashion Week

Today's prize up for grabs in assocation with High Street Fashion Week is this chic chakra bracelet worth £86. Read more below

High Street Fashion Week has gone off with a big, sparkly, ticker-tape rainbow bang as the beginning of the week’s celebration of fashion’s best high street stores was ushered in with circus performers and models scaling the sides of buildings in the latest fashions. We’d never thought that abseiling and stilettos would ever go hand-in-hand but hey, we love to be surprised.

High Street Fashion Week, which honours our much-beloved British high street in a week-long slew of fashion parties, meet and greets and sales, takes place in the shopping mecca which is Oxford Circus and will continue until Friday.

Today kicks off with an absolute monster sale in the Debenhams department store with 25% off in ALL THE DEPARTMENTS. AND IT’LL LAST ALL WEEK. There’s also a 10% discount at the Oxford Circus Benetton store when you spend £50 – it’s time to max out your store card, girls. Meanwhile, fashion sightseers should head on over to the John Lewis where they’re housing Osman Yousefzada’s latest collection.

One of the other good things about the High Street Fashion Week is their sensational giveaway prizes and competitions, which will be going on all week. If you want to channel your inner world traveller, enter the competition to get your mitts on this elegant gold chakra bracelet (pictured above left), which as well as being boho-chic is supposed to make the wearer “articulate, resonant of voice, a good listener and thrive on creativity”. That’s a good enough reason for us! Enter the competition on the website here.

Trend Alert: Tartan

By emilyborrett on August 30th, 2011

Black Check Tweed Mini Circle Skirt

Picture 1 of 9

It’s time to get on board with one of this season’s snuggliest and most wearable trends: tartan. No, you don’t have to start dressing like Princess Anne, don’t worry..

Tartan and check fabrics were all over the catwalks for the Autumn/Winter shows, from tough and masculine grey check twin-sets at Yves Saint Laurent to sixties-style checked military coats at Burberry Prorsum and blanket skirts at Rag & Bone.

We’re desperately keeping our eye out for a plaid maxi-skirt that we can wear with tough boots and a simple white T-shirt for for a laid-back 90s grunge look, but no joy yet. However, the high street is already working with this trend well. We love Topshop’s leather and check bomber jacket, which would look so so good with a pair of cigarette pants. Meanwhile at Asos they’re already selling bold tartan capes in eye-catching colours – the chicest way to wrap up warm this winter.

The best variety of tartan fashion, however, is at River Island. Their high-waisted 1940s style trousers worn with a silk blouse would be European perfection. Our top buy though is the checked pair of navy blue lace-up shoes with bow detailing – just put those bad boys on with a tea dress and you’re good to go with a quirky, British look.

Check out the gallery above for our favourite tartan pieces on the high street.

Shiny Style loves: Fun, exciting clothes from Fashion Union

Blue Closet Stripe Dress

I’m always excited to find about new up-and-coming affordable fashion stores, so it was a pleasure to learn about Fashion Union, an online fashion retailer who’s speciality is exciting, fashion-forward clothes at extremely reasonable prices. There are about a million different things on the site that I liked (the dress section is especially large – shopping heaven for me) but I eventually managed to whittle down my favourite buys for you lovely people and put them in the gallery above.

Simple shapes and bright jewel colours are hot at the moment and will be throughout Autumn/Winter, something that Fashion Union caters for extremely well with an assortment of full skirted dresses, chinos and city shorts that will lend an exciting burst of colour to any wardrobe.

There’s also a clear love for vintage in Fashion Union’s designs, with 50s-esque sun dresses and brightly coloured blouses that tie at the waist. I’ve already earmarked their adorable blue and white striped sundress for payday.

Even more exciting is their shoe section, which is completely in tune with the upcoming Autumn/Winter trends. I’m obsessing slightly over their loafer heels which come in either patent black or cream – check them out in the gallery, then click through to the site and check out the price. Amazing.

Like what you’re hearing? Have a look at ShinyStyle’s top picks from Fashion Union above.

Mother’s Day gift ideas: Purses

Vivienne Westwood Patent Wallet

Got money to burn? Why not treat your mum to this deliciously luxurious Vivienne Westwood purse that you can find here.

I don’t know about yours, but the state of my mum’s purse is absolutely atrocious – she’s a horder born and bred whose handbags and purses are stuffed completely full of a lifetime’s worth of train tickets, phone cards, store cards that have never been used and old dog-eared magazines. As a result all of her purses are completely knackered and burst apart at the seams every few months or so, only to be replaced with a new one – that’s why this year I’m thinking that I’ll get her a really good one that she can’t bring herself to spoil.

If you’re thinking of getting something similar for your ma this year, don’t just go for something practical and cheap from the reduced bin at TKMaxx – she may say thank you, but really she’d probably prefer something a bit glam and silly. After all, wouldn’t any girl rather be given a pair of Vivienne Westwood heels instead of practical wellington boots, no matter how useful they are? You know I’m right.

We’re making this easy for you – above in the gallery are some of our favourite purses to buy online. Have a peek!

First look: Lanvin for H&M preview

By Andrea Petrou on October 20th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

It’s the fashion moment that we’ve all been waiting for: H&M teasingly let us have a sneaky preview of their campaign photo for their dream high-street collaboration with Lanvin. And so far we’re loving what we’re seeing – sharp androgynous tailoring and some dramatic LBDS that we can’t wait to introduce to our wardrobe.  Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou, Alber Elbaz.

It’s been a long time coming to get our hands on edgy, trademark Lanvin style at our favourite H&M prices, and it’s only a little while longer to wait until the collection goes on sale; it hits shops on the 23rd of November. Mark it down on your calendar, because you’ll have to get there early to avoid the inevitable shopping-centre stampedes.

So far H&M is being cruel and withholding any further photos of the collection (the teases), so keep checking back on the site for more news on this couture/high-street mash-up.

Trend Alert: Best midi-skirts on the high street

By Andrea Petrou on October 6th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

The Louis Vuitton AW10 show that sparked the trend

Picture 1 of 6
Picture 1 of 6

Earlier this year Louis Vuitton showcased their ladylike, Mad Men-esque Autumn/Winter collection at Paris Couture Week to worldwide applause from the fashion world – it was revolutionary! Women don’t have to worry about squats and leg waxing anymore, because all of a sudden it’s become cutting edge to dress demurely and cover up your pins with an elegant below-the-knee midi skirt. Celebrities who in the past have opted for hemlines as short as they get, such as Alexa Chung, are now sporting the ladylike midi with fashion gusto. The Queen must be delighted.

However, us regular people have been a little more hesitant to embrace the trend in the worries in the fear of looking dowdy, or not pulling the look off. But as temperatures continue to drop as winter approaches, I predict that you’ll be feeling pretty bitter when you’re stuck in miniskirts come December – which is why the midi is a trend we should all try to embrace.

The trick to the midi is moderation. Just because your skirt has suddenly got longer, it doesn’t mean that you can’t look sexy any more, especially if you get your hands on one that nips you in at the waist for a 50s bombshell figure – it’s all about striking the balance between sexy and ladylike. For example, if you’re wearing a midi and a cosy winter jumper, make sure that you’ve got some viciously fierce heels on your feet to remind everyone that no, you’re not a prude. Or, for true Louis Vuitton understated sexiness, wear yours with a vampy corset top for a party look. Check the gallery above for the top 5 midi-skirts that I’ve found on the high street.

Shiny Style loves: Dressrail.com

By Andrea Petrou on September 15th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

Normally when somebody tries to recommend a “fashion on a serious budget” high street store, you think of Primark and its never-ending flow of churned-out fashion for a fiver; cheap, poorly made and never as nice once it’s home as when you saw it on the rail. Nah, we all say, I’ll stick to Topshop and H&M. But perhaps new online fashion store DressRail can teach us to shop out of our comfort zone, and save more than a few pennies too, with their wide range of extremely affordable and actually quite cool clothes.

The beauty of this site is that the clothes don’t look like budget fashion at all – some of the items, like the buttery-tan coloured leather miniskirt and the camel-coloured shorts wouldn’t be out of place on a Celine runway, whilst there was some serious Sarah Jessica Parker, Halston Heritage-loving going on in the designs of some of the party dresses with their fluttering folds of chiffon and batwing sleeves. Scrap your Net-a-porter wishlist and head on over here instead – I’m predicting big things for DressRail.

Trend Alert: The new backpack

By Andrea Petrou on September 10th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

When I started secondary school, you could tell who was cool and who wasn’t by what kind of school bag they had. If you had a shoulder bag, you were cool. If you had a backpack, and wore both straps on your shoulders (as your mum instructed, so you didn’t get a bad back) you weren’t. And yes, I was stuck with the backpack – it was so heavy that I walked like one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I still, to this day, blame that backpack for being so terminally unpopular for the first three years of high school.

But suddenly, a new breed of backpack has appeared. It’s lightweight, chic and a bit of a wink to the 90s “Clueless era” when fresh, preppy schoolgirl style ruled. And when it’s being championed by the likes of Daisy Lowe, the Olsens and The City’s Whitney Port, you know you’re onto a good thing.

Even Chanel’s making them – in lush, buttery-looking quilted leather with the iconic double C emblem. Back to school chic has never been so good. Check the gallery below for some of the best back-candy around at the moment.

Shopping: the unsung heroes of the high street

By laurenbravo on April 23rd, 2010

wenn2294353.jpgEveryone has a few guilty shopping pleasures. You know, those secret shopping destinations that you thought nobody else knew about. The ones with bad lighting and a few too many diamantes, where you forage for fashionable pieces amid the lycra shockers. They’re hard work, but it just makes bagging that bargain all the sweeter in the end…

Peacocks

Cast your mind back, if you will, to a time long, long ago… around 2002, perhaps. Remember how Primark was then? Before it upped its style game and started churning our catwalk copies faster than you can say ‘sweatshop’, Primark was a well-kept style secret. A diamond in the rough. At least 85 per cent tat, you had to wade through scores of housewives wrestling over velour tracksuit bottoms to stumble over hidden treasures – cute pyjamas for pocket change, accidentally trendy shoes and dresses that weren’t designed to be hip but somehow managed to be.

Fast forward eight years and now this is Peacocks; a trashy, brashy and occasionally fabulous haven for bargain shoppers. My personal theory is that among their team of jaded designers, there is one bright young spark who hasn’t quite lost their Central St Martin’s ambition and is determined to channel it into outfitting the nation’s undeserving tweens. Which explains the startlingly on-trend shoes and jewellery pieces that crop up among the standard cheap and cheery fare.

Great for: shoes, and not being seen in the same Primark dress as eleventy million other people.

Not great for: classy investment pieces. But then you probably knew that.

TK Maxx

An odd concept, where cut-price candles and patchwork denim mules nestle up against Guess jeans and Fiorelli leather bags, TK Maxx is one of the most egalitarian shopping experiences on the high street. Unlike other designer outlets, the key to shopping ‘to the Maxx’ seems not to be looking out for labels, but scouring for styles you might actually wear (then crossing your fingers and hoping it’s Chloe). Other tips include: take your time, take water, take a break and take a friend who is good at saying “I know it’s Versace, but you look like the Cookie Monster.”

Particular highlights are the underwear section, which looks like a church hall jumble sale but houses every size of bra imaginable, from egg cosies to bonafide boulder holders. I once found a beautiful balconette from Damaris’ Mimi Holliday diffusion line for about a third of the RRP. Keep that story in your head as you wrestle through the granny pants.

Great for: an enormous range of designer jeans and an eclectic, wide-ranging underwear selection.

Not great for:
statement pieces. Most tops and dresses are straight out of an Italian drag queen’s wardrobe.

Matalan

Matalan seems to exist in that exotic collective of stores that nobody seems to live anywhere near, like Ikea. And DFS. And Furniture Village. Unless of course you live in Purley Way, Croydon, which I assume means your life is a veritable carnival of furniture-buying and interest-free credit. For the rest of us, Matalan is one of those places you go on a bank holiday with your Mum while Dad is buying a new lawnmower. Hardly the makings of a devastating style adventure.

But, what do you know? The clothes are often right on the money. And hardly any money at that. The store’s Designer Collections are full of little treasures like this swirl print dress and this on-trend playsuit, all far cheaper and far less ubiquitous than their Topshop counterparts. And with such a comprehensive online store, you don’t even need to drive to that out of town retail park. Bonus.

Great for:
Fun, playful pieces that you’ll wear for a month or two.

Not great for:
Quality, or anything especially edgy. You’re with your Mum, remember… ooh, what a nice cardie.

Oxfam

We all know them – some of us fondly, some with scorn – as musty places to pick up Jilly Cooper paperbacks, beige handbags and Primark dresses costing more than they did in the shop. But ever since Mary Queen of Shops gave that Orpington branch of Save the Children a makeover, charity shops have been quietly upping their game. It’s been out with the old, moth-eaten garb and in with ranges customised by local designers, well-sourced vintage and quality high-end pieces the like of which our pennies would never stretch to new.

Oxfam shops are a great example of this development, with fashion-focused ’boutique’ branches opening across the country, a new online store recently launched with vintage from the 1950s onwards, and a new pop-up store opening in Selfridges next month. The Oxfam Curiosity Shop, running from 14-20 May, will be staffed by celebrities and stocked with donations from big fashion names, including Alexa Chung and Elle MacPherson.
Even better is the warm, fuzzy glow that comes with knowing you’ve contributed to a good cause, rather than slipping a bit more into Phillip Green’s pockets. How very Lily Cole of you.

Great for: one-of-a-kind finds, vintage rarities and quality cast-offs.

Not great for:
smelling boxfresh. Get some Fabreze in.

And the rest…

MK One

Great for: those floral t-shirt dresses that are so overpriced in so many places.

Not great for:
avoiding VPL or pregnant teenagers.

Debenhams

Great for:
great concessions and designer ranges, like H! by Henry Holland. And when the shopping’s taken the wind out of your sails, you can refuel with a nice teacake in the cafe.

Not great for:
cred.

Tesco

Great for:
picking up some decent, trend-led pieces along with your cauliflower and Coco Pops.

Not great for: an indulgent shopping experience. Who can concentrate on whether a dress is flattering with the smell of pastries wafting over from the bakery counter?

Gallery: Lighten up with the best spring jackets

By laurenbravo on April 6th, 2010

It’s that time-old dilemma. As Buddy Holly (nearly) sang: the sun is out, the sky is blue, there’s not a cloud to spoil the view, but it’s Britain… and it might turn crap.

It’s quite a momentous decision, every year, the first time you leave the big winter coat at home and venture out unprotected. Will the heavens suddenly open? Will everybody look at you in the street with admiration, you the poster girl for carefree summer style, or will they be thinking “you’re not in Florida love, put a jumper on”?

Then there’s the confidence issue. Many women confess to hating our upper arms (the day designers learn to recognise that little pocket of armpit flab that oozes out of strappy dresses will be a day to celebrate), and with few spring/summer clothes giving us that sacred gift, the sleeve, we end up forced into myriad of cardigans and cover-ups that make us feel like Lorraine Kelly at a wedding.

No more. This season, the spring jacket has really come into its own, with a variety of gorgeous fabrics, shapes and colours that say “fashion statement” rather than “I’m hiding my visible bra straps”. There’s last year’s biker jacket, revamped from traditional black into soft pinks and creamy ice cream shades. Then there’s a continuation of the underwear-as-outerwear trend with lacy, silky, bed jackety affairs (aim for 30s boudoir rather than Sybill Fawlty’s sickbed), and some fantastic floral pieces to team with plain separates and let do all the talking.

Keep the shape cropped, the colours breezy and the fit trim. Oh, and don’t forget an umbrella… there’s not a cagoule in sight.

Short and sweet: the best shorts and playsuits on the high street

By laurenbravo on March 20th, 2010

Shorts get a bad press. Despite a resurgence last year, lots of us still harbour deep-seated (or shallow-seated, depending on how high waisted you choose to go) fears about getting our pins out in a pair. Go too tight and you look like Daisy Duke, too long and you look like a lady explorer, too short and you’re veering into dangerous street-corner territory…

But done right, shorts will be a wardrobe winner this year. The spring/summer catwalks were a veritable leg parade, with everybody from Stella McCartney to Balmain showcasing shorts for all occasions. At Chloe they were high-waisted leather, at Marc by Marc Jacobs they were vintage-inspired satin hotpants, while Cynthia Rowley and Fendi both showed loose, tailored ‘tap pant’ styles reminiscent of a ’30s schoolboy on a boating holiday. There were city shorts, beachy shorts and countless knickerbocker styles to choose from.

On the high street, meanwhile, shorts are sneaking onto the radar by pretending to be skirts, in an array of cutsey prints and sorbet shades. For the most flattering approach, try teaming a high-waisted, mid-thigh pair with opaque tights, a simple vest, boyfriend blazer and chunky heels. We’re also gleefully welcoming back last summer’s staple, the playsuit. Opt for muted colours and fitted shapes for a look that’s more pin-up, less Playdays presenter.

Here’s a round-up of our favourites for your delectation. Go shorty…

Firstly he is given the job of creative director at Pollini and now we hear that the British designer is Target’s newest GO International designer – as we speculated way back in January.

First look at Jovovich-Hawk for Target

Target may not associate with bloggers but that won’t stop Catwalk Queen from talking about Jovovich-Hawk’s new diffusion range for the retailer. After all, they – and we – adore Milla Jovovich! Come to think of it, a lot of these dress look like they could have come from our favorite Milla movie – Dazed and Confused! The first pics from the collection have been unveiled and they have the designers’ folksy stamp all over it. Those light smock dresses and vintage-style prints are ideal for the warmer months.
