Time to sharpen those elbows and invest in some body padding. H&M has announced that high-fashion Japanese label Comme des Garcons will be creating a line for the low-priced retailer.
If past big-name collaborations are any indication, it will be hard to get your hands on these pieces without a fight.
Everyone’s favorite bargain retailer, H&M has released a new video podcast revealing some of their new spring styles hitting stores. Catarina Midby, head of fashion communication at H&M talks about the inspirations for their spring styles – like oriental prints and “happy colors” – and also gives us her top 5 items. The brown cropped biker jacket, $49.50 looks like one Serena wears on Gossip Girl, and an organic cotton poppy red blouse at only $29.90 satisfies your desire for style and your eco sensibility.
Everyone knows this is THE big shopping weekend–kicking off the holiday shopping the day after Thanksgiving, a.k.a. Black Friday. I’ve often wondered the reason for this name, so I Wickipedia’d it. It says, “‘Black Friday’ was originally so named because of the heavy traffic on that day, although most contemporary uses of the term refer instead to it as the beginning of the period in which retailers are in the black (i.e., turning a profit).” So that’s that, in case you were interested. Now on to the sales–continue over to the jump!
The H&M at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 51st St. was a madhouse today with the premiere of the Roberto Cavalli collection with the designer himself making a personal appearance at the location. A line began forming outside the store at 7 p.m. last night, and crowds of people camped out over the freezing cold night for the 8 a.m. special store opening. Store clerks told stories of girls running into the store and just grabbing everything in site and making a mad dash for the dressing room to sort out their treasures. One girl (and possibly more) in tears after falling face first onto the floor as she ran. One shopper, Vielka featured in the video above, arrived a couple hours late to the scene only to find barely any Roberto Cavalli apparel left. She was able to scrounge up a few choice pieces like Cavalli’s signature leopard print underwear and stylish black scarf. Continue to the jump for more pics of the store featuring Roberto Cavalli decor.
Fashionista has been reading her Swedish lifestyle magazines lately, and discovered this article about a celebrity-designed T-shirt line to be put out by H&M to benefit YouthAIDS. The Cardigans and Chicks on Speed designed the tops at left, and other contributors include Jade Jagger, Good Charlotte, and the Scissor Sisters. Hopefully the shirts will be available here sometime in the new year.
In the November issue of Lucky Magazine, the editors tallied readers’ votes and added their own ratings of the top stores for everything fashion. Nordstrom was voted the best department store overall with Macy’s as a close second. Barney’s New York, however, was rated the best department store overall by the Lucky crew. The best chain store rated by readers overall was Gap, but Nine West was rated best for shoes by both groups, Victoria’s Secret for lingerie, Sephora for Beauty and H&M for Hot-off-the-runway clothes. As for online retail sites, Shopbop.com was voted the best young-designer site, Eluxury.com was best luxury site, Zappos.com the top site for shoes, and Bluefly.com the number one bargain site.
New ads, with prices, are coming out for the Roberto Cavalli for H&M collection which launches Nov. 8. There’s a lot of animal prints and metallics to look forward to, with Cavalli’s signature sexy style. It’s a really good capsule collection with more classic Cavalli designs than his spring/summer collection. Prices seem to vary from around $100 for a silk dress to $70 for a silk blouse and $250 for a wool suit. Click over for more images.
New Yorkers, tell your boss you’re leaving early today. Grab your mom and girlfriends and go shopping this weekend…no, right now!! H&M is having a Buy 1 Get 1 Free on all reduced items through Monday October 8! It doesn’t get any better than this! Stock up on summer’s looks, after all, it’s still really warm outside!
After the NYPD raid on Monday in Queens of $13 million dollars worth of counterfeit apparel of brands such as Polo, Lacoste, North Face, Rocawear, and Seven For All Mankind, it really made me think, How bad is it to buy a fake? This video, above, on how a counterfeit Louis Vuitton purse is brought into the U.S. is pretty interesting–minus the “We’re gonna get you, suckers!” Of course, though, it can be pretty irresistible sometimes to buy a faux handbag or sunglasses for $10 to $20, especially when the original costs $100 or more. But what I didn’t realize was that U.S. companies lose $200-250 billion a year and 750,000 Americans have lost their jobs because of counterfeit and piracy (according to the U.S. Chamber of Congress).
Those chilly fall days aren’t here, yet, (hey, I’m not complaining!) but they will be soon, so here are some great daytime sweaters to wear to the office, shopping, lunch with friends–anywhere not too fancy. This first pick is a BB Dakota cable-knit tunic (left) for just $36.90. It looks chic with jeans with or without a long-sleeve tee underneath, and can even be worn as a dress with black or charcoal tights.

Italian designer Roberto Cavalli, known for animal prints and curve-hugging dresses (see image above) worn by Jennifer Lopez and Madonna, has been slated to join the likes of Viktor & Rolf and Stella McCartney to design a collection for H&M.
Margareta van der Bosch, creative director for H&M, said of the designer, “There is no place for shyness and no possibility of ending up with a mainstream wardrobe of everyday basics. The Roberto Cavalli collections represent an exuberant, successful lifestyle.”
