Dame Helen Mirren is the top style icon for women over 50

By Andrea Petrou on December 19th, 2011

Dame Helen Mirren is the top style icon for women over 50.

The fashionable actress, 66, claimed the accolade after clothing brand CC quizzed 1,000 women for the poll and they believe the results show that “age isn’t a barrier to style or confidence”.

A spokesperson said: “These results show that age really isn’t a barrier to style or confidence. In fact, it can be quite the opposite.

“It’s inspiring to see that many women over fifty are comfortable in their self, confident in their style and brave enough to explore new clothing options.

“Dame Helen Mirren has as much style, grace and elegance off screen as she does on it and is a fitting icon for the women of her generation.

“All too often we are bombarded with images of youth and temporary trends, so it’s great to see such a varied list filled with women of real class.”

A host of famously fashionable veterans completed the top five including model Twiggy, 62, ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ star Joanna Lumley, 65, 63-year-old singer Lulu and Dame Judi Dench, 77.

Fashion designer Victoria Beckham, 37, was a surprising inclusion on the list, just outside the top five.

The spokesperson added: “Victoria Beckham has proven she carries universal appeal and her image over the past few years has altered from high glamour to a more classic look which appeals to women of all ages.

“The results show women in their fifties aren’t afraid to embrace younger styles when they’re done the right way.”

Red carpet Christmas outfit inspiration: Rooney Mara at the Girl with the Daragon Tattoo premiere and all the style from the Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol premiere

By Andrea Petrou on December 14th, 2011

When we’re having an “I don’t know what to wear” moment one of the places we’ll have a sneaky look at is red carpet events.

They are, afterall, a mecca for best dressed celebrities who have often been given top styling advice.

If you’re still stuck with what to wear to a smart Christmas party or for New Years eve then why not take some inspiration from girl of the moment Rooney Mara who went for a stunning white fishtail frock at the London premiere of The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo?

If that’s a little bit too much then Caprice showed how  effective a simple red strapless dress could be at the Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, while Talula also showed how faux fur can be stylish and keep you snug at the same event.

By Andrea Petrou on December 7th, 2011

The fashion world took on a Bollywood theme last night with Karl Lagerfeld showing off his Chanel Paris-Bombay 2011/12 collection in Paris.

Indian inspired dresses in metallics, soft floaty fabrics and beads sauntered down the catwalk all giving a nod to the glamorous Bollywood look.

Jewelled bindis featured heavily on model’s make up, whilst golds, reds, greens in tunics and saris finished the looks.

We can’t wait to see how the highstreet interprets these.

Christmas party dress inspiration from the red carpet premieres of New Year’s Eve and W.E

By Andrea Petrou on December 6th, 2011

If you’re looking for inspiration for that Christmas party outfit then this week’s red carpet events will give you just that.

Yesterday a huge host of A-listers turned up on the New Year’s Eve premiere red carpet in a range of frocks. Lea Michele shone in a stunning off-white long frock- perfect for more formal occasions – while Fergie and Hilary Swank went for embellished short numbers, which we think are perfect for that night out on the tiles.

Over on the W.E premiere red carpet Madonna sported the skinny jeans and blazer, which is a perfect alternative for frock fearing ladies, while Chloe Sevigny showed how to vamp up a Christmas party outfit in a red dress.

See the gallery below for more Christmas party frock inspiration.

Diane von Furtstenberg believes her greatest achievement is giving women confidence

By Andrea Petrou on October 19th, 2011

Diane von Furtstenberg believes her greatest achievement is giving women confidence.

The 64-year-old designer – who is most famous for the wrap dress she designed in the 1970s, which enjoyed a revival over two decades later – is proud that people enjoy wearing her creations because they make them feel good about themselves, though she hopes she still has things to achieve.

She said: “I am against anything that objectifies women,

“My greatest achievement is that I have given confidence to women with my clothes.

“The word ‘accomplished’ makes you think with a full stop. I hope I am accomplishing!”

Diane believes that female designers make more appealing outfits because they are practical fashions, whereas she thinks her male counterparts prefer “costumes”.

She said: “Women design clothes for women to wear. Men design costumes.”

Diane admitted she felt “humiliated” when she was learned pregnant after getting engaged to Prince Egon of Furstenberg but was determined to forge a career and insisted on learning the basics of fashion before marrying at 23.

She told the Guardian newspaper: “I was working in a clothing factory in Italy when I discovered I was pregnant. I was humiliated, worried people would think I’d done it to get the ‘best catch in Europe’. So I said to my boss: ‘I’m getting married and moving to America, but before I go, can I learn how to make clothes?’ And I stayed after work with the patternmaker, and that’s how I got into fashion.”

Rosie Huntington-Whitely says it takes “dedication” to become a good model

By emilyborrett on September 8th, 2011

Rosie Huntington-Whitely has spoken out about exactly what it takes to have a successful career in modelling.

Rosie, who’s probably every man in the world’s dream girl at the moment, is fast becoming one of our generation’s most loved models and a successful Hollywood actress with a leading role in the new Transformers movie. So it’s fair to say that Miss Rosie knows a thing or two about a successful modelling career.

Her advice to any aspiring young models? “It takes hard work, determination and the ability to pick yourself up and try again when things go wrong. I advise you to get a reputable team around you, too. And always trust your gut feeling.” In addition to Rosie’s recommendations, we also recommend swishy hair, a bee-sting pout and legs like a baby giraffe’s. That seems to be quite important too.

Rosie’s support “team” is her mum, who she attributes for her success and drive as a young model. She told Britain’s ELLE magazine: “My mother inspires me. She’s been the driving force behind me the whole way and I strive to make her proud. I’m always drawn to women who are strong, independent, individual, who have an air of mystery about them and who aren’t afraid of their sexuality.”

An “emotionally thin” Lady Gaga wears her heart on her sleeve for her art

By emilyborrett on August 10th, 2011

Our favourite bonkers hitmaker, Lady Gaga, has described herself as “emotionally thin” – for anyone as bemused as we are by that phrase, it just means vulnerable, but Gaga doesn’t like that word as it implies that she just cries all the time.

When asked in an interview what she’s come to learn about herself recently, she replied: “I learned that to be a great artist, you must be emotionally very thin. Your tears and anger and your happiness must be just under the surface of your first layer of skin. I like to say ‘emotionally thin’ because it’s much more dramatic. Vulnerable to me implies only tears.”

We really like a celebrity that we can relate to, and that isn’t afraid to wear her (mental and technicoloured) heart on her sleeve. Take care, Gaga. We love you!

Lady Gaga has “worshipped” Madonna her whole life

By Andrea Petrou on July 6th, 2011

Lady Gaga has “worshipped” Madonna her whole life.

The ‘Edge Of Glory’ hitmaker – whose musical style has been compared to that of the legendary singer – explained she also feels “connected to and inspired by” the likes of Barbra Streisand, Cher and Blondie.

She told The Advocate magazine: “They’re my sisters. I feel so connected to Madonna in a lot of ways, and I feel connected to Barbra, and I feel connected to Cher and Blondie and all of the women who came before me.

“I worshipped them my whole life, and I would never be where I am today without all of them to inspire me. I feel so grateful that I have such strong women to look up to.”

It would appear the feeling is mutual for Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry, who recently praised Lady Gaga for bring a breath of fresh air to the US music scene.

She said: “Gaga is truly talented and slightly mad. I find her encouraging.

“It’s such a conservative period in the US. We have even had attempts at censorship, which I find appalling and terrible. Artists like Gaga are necessary during periods like this.”

Lady Gaga a design inspiration

By Andrea Petrou on May 31st, 2011

Lady Gaga is a creative “inspiration” according to the Polaroid chairman.

The eccentric singer was named as creative director of the company last year and while the appointment was greeted with disbelief in some areas, chairman Bobbie Sager believes the products Gaga has worked on – including the GL20 camera sunglasses which can take videos and play them back as you wear them – show it was a wide decision to bring her on board.

He said: “For the 21st century, you can’t just think out of the box. You have to crush the box. That’s where Lady Gaga comes in. She’s not just a spokeswoman. She’s the creative director. On any of these products, she’s the inspiration and she’s been in several long technical meetings.”

Along with designing sunglasses, Gaga also has plans to release her own range of fragrances in 2012 after signing a deal with cosmetics firm Coty Inc. last year and even hopes to design her own clothing collection.

She said: “I can’t wait to do my own line. It’s definitely something I want to do in the next year, as I do have my own style. I’m already talking to my boy Akon about it.”

Kimberley Walsh says she is inspired by curvy women like Beyonce Knowles when she dresses.

By Andrea Petrou on May 23rd, 2011

Kimberley Walsh says she is inspired by curvy women like Beyonce Knowles when she dresses.

The shapely Girls Aloud singer said she chooses clothes that suit her figure and looks to other celebrities such as Beyonce and Halle Berry for ideas.

The beautiful pop star, who is dating Justin Scott, said: “I guess I tend to look towards curvier women like Beyonce and see what looks good on them. And Halle Berry also has a great body. If I had her figure I don’t think I’d complain!”

The 29 year old – who is taking a break from music to build a career as a TV presenter – added she likes to dress to a 50s style to flatter her shape – and she has learned not to get too hung up on her body flaws.

She said: “I always dress to suit my shape. I won’t wear a trend if it doesn’t suit my figure. I love that whole 50s style, mainly because it suits my body shape, rather than it being a trend.

“I’d like to have longer legs – but wouldn’t everyone? It’s just the way it is. But they probably wouldn’t look right with the rest of my shape anyway!”

Anna Sui for Target disassociates itself from Gossip Girl comparisons

By Kimberley Foster on July 14th, 2009

Following the internet leak of the Anna Sui for Target lookbook last month, Target execs have been quick to backpedal on any suggestion that the range has been inspired by Gossip Girl.

“One of Target’s top executives got nervous about being that closely associated with the show, given the [debauchery] its characters get into,” a source told the New York Daily News.
