Jean Paul Gaultier thinks Anna Wintour is “monstrous”

By Andrea Petrou on October 13th, 2011

US Vogue editor Anna Wintour

Jean Paul Gaultier thinks Anna Wintour is “monstrous”.

The flamboyant French designer insists he wasn’t a fan of fashion movie The Devil Wears Prada – which is thought to be based on the US Vogue editor and her offices – because he doesn’t think it was true to life.

He said: “Anna Wintour is a lot more monstrous than she is described.

“Is she a positive figure [in fashion]? She is a figure.”

Jean Paul also spoke of his sadness about John Galliano – who was recently found guilty of racist and anti-Semitic behaviour and was sacked from Dior and his eponymous label John Galliano – and what he has lost because of the incident.

He added: “I know John a little and I must say that what he does for his work shows he is not a racist.

“When you see the video you can see it is someone teasing him… John is very talented. He has done some beautiful things for Dior.

“I think it is completely sad he doesn’t have his own label anymore. I think it’s bad. There are some people who say and do terrible things and they are not even punished for it.”

Top five tweed must-haves

By Andrea Petrou on October 12th, 2011

Tweed is one trend that never really disappears and always has a presence in our wardrobes whether it be a hat or jacket.

However, this season it’s taking centre stage thanks to the likes of Celine and Jean Paul Gaultier who both made this fabric a main look in their A/W 2011 collections.

One piece that’s hot on the highstreet this season is the chic tweed jacket,  and it’s good news for those looking to go for a modern look thanks to the huge range of cute tweed shorts and shoes.

For those wishing to look a little bit more classic and give a nod to Downton Abbey a double breasted equestrian style blazer is a great option.

Below are our top five Tweed must haves. Just click to buy.

Paris Haute Couture Week: Jean-Paul Gaultier

By Andrea Petrou on January 26th, 2011

By Emily Borrett.

It’s not exactly a secret that Jean-Paul Gaultier is a bit of a maverick in the world of fashion design, but I don’t think anyone was quite expecting the couture collection that he showed in Paris today. Amidst a flurry of chiffon, draping, nudes and pom-pom ruffles, Gaultier showed a collection that was one part silent movie actress, two parts bondaged punk from the King’s Road, circa 1979. And let’s just say this – Vivienne Westwood may have invented punk, but we think Gaultier might have just re-invented it.

No model was without a mohawk today on the runway – something that probably should have looked cheesy and cliché, but instead worked brilliantly contrasted against rolled fringes and clipped retro waves to make a new style that was completely modern and pure Gaultier down to the core. He applied the same prim-meets-rebellious approach to his collection, which was an unbelievable mashup of old-school dark glamour and mean, snarling attitude. A sleek white trouser-suit was teamed with a spiked leather handbag shaped like a landmine. A sheer, distressed black sweater was worn with a timeless fringed skirt. Classic 1950s silhouettes were worn with (what looked like) the same kind of bejwelled stripper heels that we see Taylor Momsen stomping about in every day. On paper it shouldn’t have worked, but on the catwalk it was poetry.

As usual at one of Gaultier’s shows, there was more than a hint of the dominatrix in the collection as dresses came down the catwalk in rubbers, leathers and lacey fabrics. He’s a sucker for a vamp – that’s what we love about the guy. However, in addition to the usual gothic fare today there were some surprisingly cheery prints that were like sexy beams of sunshine amongst all the dark reds and black. ShinyStyle’s surprise favourite? The rainbow-coloured tuxedo, which had so much potential to be a horror but instead stuck two fingers up to everyone and radiated attitude.

And so, ShinyStyle gives Jean-Paul a special Shiny fashion salute. Today he brought true spirit and creativity to the runways of Paris.

Paris Fashion Week highlights: Hermes

By Andrea Petrou on October 7th, 2010

The Paris Fashion Week whirlwind came to an end last night, with fatigued fashionistas giving out their final air kisses before packing their designer bags and heading back home.

However, that was  after they had watched the last PFW show, which was of course Hermes. Not only did this close the event but also marked the end of Jean Paul Gaultier’s seven year designer stint at the house.

And what a finale it was. JPG gave us a stunning collection with a strong nod at the equestrian theme and the brand’s leather saddle making past by marching horses up the catwalk.

Leather made an appearance in tailored jackets, trousers and of course trousers. As you would expect with such a theme there were also jodhpurs and, quite originally jumpsuits, which were wound into the theme thanks to suede patches.

There were waistcoats and thick leather corsets as well as chiffon dresses for the evening.

It’s a show we’ll definitely remember..until next season at least.

Happy Birthday, Dita Von Teese

By Andrea Petrou on September 28th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

Classic, 1930s jewel-encrusted Dita-style - furs and an awful lot of costume jewellery, round about the time that she ceased to be an underground act and became a burlesque superstar.

Happy birthday to the “queen of burlesque” and pin-up girl for all things bright and beautiful, Dita Von Teese, who is turning 38 years old today. (It feels weird typing that – she looks about twenty.)

She may have originally only entered our consciousness because of her relationship and marriage to pop-rock weirdo Marilyn Manson way back when, but she’s certainly not famous through connections anymore. Her sexy, cartoonish old-school style, which is a bit of a mashup between Betty Boop and Jessica Rabbit, has won her millions of fans and secured her title as the “Queen of Burlesque”. She’s loved by both men and women respectively – women love her because she’s sexy without adhering to modern stereotypes of “female beauty”, and men love her because, well, she’s just really sexy.

And fashion loves her too – she wiggled down the catwalk earlier this year in full vamp-mode for Jean-Paul Gaultier’s couture show, attired in black retro-looking bondage, PVC and not much else besides a crazily fierce oversized head-piece in Paris. She’s a regular face not only on the catwalk but in the front row too, bagging many a sought-after front row seat for some of the most prestigious fashion houses in the world, and a regular advocate of the likes of Christian Dior and Marc Jacobs.

Dita is a girl’s girl, an amazing dresser and a true fashion-lover. And that’s why we love her. Love, love, love. So much love for the best-dressed striptease artist in the world. Happy birthday, Dita.

Paris Fashion Week: who’s been wowing us so far

By emilyborrett on July 8th, 2010

Its a busy week for couture as fashionistas flock from all over the globe to Paris, fashion mecca, to gawp at what fantastic creations our most beloved designers have made for the upcoming Autumn/Winter Season. All of the most stylish celebrities were out in full force to eye up the haute couture, including Anna Wintour (naturally), Leighton Meester, French wild child Lou Doillon, Blake Lively and Jessica Alba.

The event is nearly over (it ends on the 11th) but it hasn’t disappointed in terms of spectacular design and craftmanship. Jean Paul Gaultier put on a sensational show that oozed old-school Hollywood glamour, sending models down the catwalk with cigarette holders and huge, Carmen Miranda-esque headpieces. The enticing blend of leathers, silks and furs really lent to the decadent vibe of his collection.

Valentino opted for romantic structuring in his collection; he showed us that the nude trend is still live and kicking as models walked the runway in creamy, peachy structures that were almost bird-cage like. A beautiful, dreamy collection of clothing, but probably the one of the least wearable things I’ve seen considering that you can’t sit down in it. It’ll be interesting to see how the high street tries to take influence from Valentino.

However, the favourite collection has to be (always has been, always will be) Chanel’s A/W collection, where the order of the day seemed to be an explosion of metallics, embellishments, golds and silks. I died a little bit looking at this collection – it’s disgustingly, incredibly gorgeous. I wish I was rich, or married to Karl Lagerfeld, or both. Words can’t describe how sickenly beautiful his collection was, so check the gallery below. (Here’s hoping Primark will start selling replicas of these dresses for a fiver).

Haute Couture Fashion Week Spring 09: Jean Paul Gaultier

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 29th, 2009

Catwalk Queen‘s Gemma Cartwright writes…

Jean Paul Gaultier’s couture collection could have been a rehashing of one of his shows from almost twenty years ago.

But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The designer was arguably at the height of his career when Madonna wore his cone bra corset for her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, and this collection paid homage to that era, with corseted pieces and lots of wide shoulders with nipped in waists. It was an almost exclusively greyscale palette, but that added to the drama. Think curly calligraphy on swathes of chiffon and organza, textured dresses with stiff skirts, and high-waisted matador trousers with braces…

Get to know Jean Paul Gaultier’s Paris

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on September 30th, 2008

If you can’t be in the City of Light for Paris Fashion Week, a day dream tour of the city with Jean Paul Gualtier is the next best thing.

Lucky New York Times’ writer Henry Alford experienced what stateside fashion fans can only fantasize about. He visited everywhere from the Moulin Rouge to the Musee Grevin under Gaultier’s instructions, and ate at the Eiffle Tower with the legend himself.

Fall 2008 Couture: join Janet Jackson & Jermaine Dupri in the front row at Jean Paul Gaultier

By Andrea Thatcher on July 3rd, 2008

From CatwalkQueen: Yes that is what the title says… Janet Jackson and her man Jermaine Dupri (‘JD’) have been hitting all the major shows this season. From menswear in Milan, to couture in Paris, JD has been YouTubing his experiences all the way. In this vid, check out Jean Paul Gaultier’s autumn/winter couture show, as the famous couple saw it – from the front row! Personally, I was wowed by the designer’s colourful bird creations inside cages. We’re not quite sure what JD said at the end of the tape to upset Janet, but one thing’s for sure, this man is definitely living the life… jels!

Best actress Marion Cotillard at the Oscars

By Andrea Thatcher on February 24th, 2008

Marion.jpg

Marion Cotillard gave one of those emotional, awestruck Oscar speeches that are sure to be replayed on morning shows and award show recaps for years to come. Especially since it’s even more dramatic with a French accent.

The drama we loved was that of her Gaultier mermaid dress. Not only did it have a fishtail hem, but scale-like embroidery down the entire length.

It looked very nice on her, and was one of the more daring dresses of the evening – which tells you it was a very safe red carpet.

Cotillard won the best actress award for her portrayal of Edith Piaf in “La Vie en Rose.”
