Top five celebrity denim styles: Alexa Chung, Angelina Jolie and Kate Middleton

By Andrea Petrou on January 12th, 2012

We’re not afraid to admit that we have far too many pairs of jeans.

Yes, some may look like another pair, but the fit is different and it would of course be rude not to own as many styles as possible. Some show off our booties while others elongate our legs.

Some can be worn with heels for a night out while others are great teamed up with trainers for a casual day at the park.

However, sometimes we struggle to find that perfect look and that’s where celebrities come in handy. We heart Rihanna’s take on the boyfriend jeans, while Angelina Jolie shows how to wear the bootcut look and give it a smart edge.

Then there’s Jessica Alba and Alexa Chung who rock the coloured jeans, teaming them with a plain top to really accentuate that hue.

See the gallery below for all the celebrity denim inspiration.

By Andrea Petrou on April 13th, 2010

The denim trend hasn’t really faded out for a good few years. New styles hit the catwalk each season going from skinny, to bootcut to comfy boyfriend styles.

And this season it’s no different. A range of designers, such as our favourite Christopher Kane, included denim in their SS2010 and as we’re caught up in the 80s summer styles many of these were era inspired including faded and distressed styles.

We’ve therefore put together a gallery of the hottest looks, including jeans, shorts and tops, just incase any of you are brave enough to try out that hot double denim look.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen launch Textile Elizabeth James denim

By Andrea Petrou on April 9th, 2010

Elizabeth and James.jpg
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are two actresses come designers who have really done well in the clothing industry. They have their successful Row collection as well as numerous ranges of accessories including sunglasses.

Not content with their creativity however, the twins are moving into bigger and more pricier things. They’ve just launched the Textile Elizabeth and James denim line to their range.
The collection, which is inspired by the 1970s, will include three jeans styles: a high waisted crop flair, distressed bell bottoms and a casual button fly design.

Ashley said: “With the addition of Textile Elizabeth and James, the label offers a well-rounded collection of casual to dressy options for the trend conscious customer.”

Mary Kate continued: “The fit, wash, hardware and fabric of Textile Elizabeth and James embody the Elizabeth and James quality and design aesthetic our customers have come to expect. The details of each piece have been carefully executed for a worn, classic touch.”

Although the jeans won’t hit the UK for some time you can buy yours at Intermixonline But be warned these jeans aren’t cheap.

Get the look: Pixie Lott’s ballerina style shoes

By Andrea Petrou on March 25th, 2010

Pixie 1.jpg

We love Pixie Lott’s sassy and kooky fashion sense, which unlike Lady Gaga’s style can be worn almost everyday.

One example of this are these gorgeous Aruna Seth black flats the singer was spotted wearing to the Ivy this week.

We heart the peep toe style, which givse a summer twist to traditional ballet pumps, and the crystal butterfly.

Copy Pixie’s style and team up with shorts, tights and a blazer. Or wear with jeans for a spring daytime look.

However, a word of warning: Star style doesn’t come cheap as these shoes cost £365.

We think it may be time we sent our bank manager and credit card company some flowers….

Spring trend: Fantastic florals

By Andrea Petrou on March 11th, 2010

The days are getting longer and brighter with many of us seeing a few days of sunshine. And of course, that can only mean one thing. Spring is on it’s way.

We can’t wait for the warmer days and brighter nights but most importantly the opportunity to wear the latest spring trends.

One trend that’s going to be huge this season is florals, which were shown off by designers such as Christian Dior and Chanel at their SS2010 catwalk shows way back in September last year.

These prints have also been spotted on the likes of boho babe Sienna Miller as well as Chanel fanatic Alexa Chung and Sarah Jessica Parker.

So how do you wear, what could be busy, items of clothing? Well the trick here is not too go too overboard. Unlike the double denim trend that’s hitting our wardrobes at the moment, florals should be teamed up with something plain. If you decide on a flowery top, then opt for jeans or a pastel skirt underneath.

And if you go for a skirt or on-trend culottes then pick a plain white or pastel coloured tee.

View our gallery below for our favourite floral picks.

My Denim Inbetweener research and a gallery of the best fitting jeans on the highstreet

By Andrea Petrou on January 29th, 2010

After my rant about being a denim inbetweener I thought I’d take some time out and really go and do some research. So I packed my fan, put my friend’s number on standby and hit the highstreet to see if there really was a perfect fitting jean.

To make the test fair I picked three different styles in each shop and took in the two sizes I always try.

First stop was H&M and I have to admit I was hopeful, but when I found that familiar tug at the thighs with all three pairs of the 8s, I knew it just wasn’t going to happen, and I felt it was far too early in my challenge to begin the denim workout.

And the 10s, proved to be even more of a surprise. One of the pairs turned out to be smaller than the 8, and fitting my toe through the tiny hole was as far as I got. However the other two were as baggy and ill fitting as usual.

So I continued. Topshop fared no better than H&M and although I’d gone into those changing rooms looking groomed, the tugging and sweating got the better of me. The outcome? I came out sporting a hairstyle that would only work on Jamie Afro (think Monica’s hair in the Barbados episode of Friends.)

This trend continued into Oasis, French Connection, Mango, Gap and Zara and as my frustrations grew so did the hair.

So I took myself, and the hair to Marks and Spencer. And guess what? I found a near perfect match (well we’ll forgive a tiny muffin top). However, once again the bigger size was just too big.

Dorothy Perkins also faired well in my denim test as did Miss Selfridge, Wallis (which all form part of the Arcadia group with Topshop) and River Island.

Now I want to get the low down from retailers on how they measure their sizes and I’m hoping I’ll be able to come back with some answers next week. I also want to conduct the same test with designer jeans to see if spending that little bit more ensures a perfect fit. And of course I want to hear about your experiences with this problem too (leave your comments below or email me at Andrea@shinymedia.com.)

Until then I’ve put together a gallery of some of the best fitting jeans out there. I know they won’t suit everyone but I hope it helps some of you.

You can also check out our Fashion Tips of Timeless jean styles, which I hope will go some way to helping you find that perfect fitting denim.

See pictures of Victoria Beckham’s new jeans line

By lotte on November 27th, 2009

Victoria Beckham jeans 1.jpg Victoria Beckham is relaunching her jeans range with a new name: Victoria Beckham Denim. They’re looking a lot more fashion-y than Victoria’s dVb jeans designs (which as far as I can remember had big, not very discreet crests on the back pockets), as you can see from these lookbook pictures. Although they’re still on the expensive side for jeans, with prices starting at £140, we’re loving the sleek designs. The variety means there’s probably something for everyone, since there are also jackets, shorts and a full range of leggings on offer.

After the success of her VB fashion line we’re expecting the jeans, released next spring, to be a big hit with celebrities – we’re placing bets on Blake Lively being pictured in them first.

Timeless Jean styles

By Andrea Petrou on October 23rd, 2009

Denim has clung onto the cusp of the fashion world for a good few decades and we don’t see it moving out of the stylish spotlight for a long time.

However, although denim itself has stuck, the styles have changed from season to season. This mean those pairs of skinny jeans you once loved, have been relegated to the back of the wardrobe and replaced with another seasonal favourite.

This not only costs money, but also means you have a wardrobe full of denim demons (yes we don’t throw anything away either).

We’ve therefore had a look at some timeless denim styles that you can wear throughout the seasons without looking dated and put together a few tips to ensure you get the perfect fit.

Forward fashion at your finger tips

By Andrea Petrou on August 18th, 2009

asos.jpg
If you want to stand out from the fashion crowd and get your hands on designs by someone who could possibly be the next Tom Ford, then get yourself onto the Asos website sharpish.

The shopping site, which keeps us up until all times of the night uming and ahing over the latest dress, is now stocking Laden Showroom an independent boutique previously in Brick Lane.

So why are we getting so excited about this boutique? Well the shop stocks a huge range of up-and-coming British designers, many of whom then go on to be big names.

We love the Renne London button batwing dress, priced at £48 and the Flamingo Fade Print Jersey Babydoll Dress, which will add a bit of 70s tie dye magic to your clothing collection.

However, we get the feeling these won’t last too long, so get typing fast.

Controversial Calvin Klein billboard replaced by Doutzen Kroes in a bikini

By Kimberley Foster on June 26th, 2009

calvinklein_billboard_bikini_doutzenkroes.jpg

It didn’t take long (just enough time to achieve maximum exposure, I’m presuming) for Calvin Klein to pull it’s controversial jeans billboard in Manhattan. The company has instead replaced the “threesome” ad with a much less provocative shot of Doutzen Kroes in a red bikini. I’m sure this will come as a sight for sore eyes to many of the locals, namely of the male variety.

Calvin Klein Jeans billboard upsets Manhattan

By Kimberley Foster on June 17th, 2009

calvinkleinjeans_billboard_newyork.jpg

Calvin Klein is in hot water yet again after a provocative billboard for its womenswear and menswear jeans line was unveiled in New York this week. The racy ad which depicts a young female semi-naked model lying across one man and kissing another has caused uproar amongst appalled Manhattanites. However CK designers are at a loss to see the problem.

“It’s my favorite campaign ever!” said CK menswear designer, Italo Zucchelli. “I hope they’re going to be, ‘Ooooh, what is that?’ And then they buy our jeans. In the best tradition of Calvin Klein.”

Get Jessica Alba’s jeans (though, sadly, not her body)

By Andrea Thatcher on October 2nd, 2008

Jessica Alba jeans.jpg

Jessica Alba is looking as good as ever post baby, as most celebs do!

She’s seen here in Divine Rights of Denim Envy High Waist jeans, $80. The pants boast tummy tucking and butt-lifting abilities, not that Alba needs them, but we might!

They’re made of cashmere denim, which sounds like something we need.

Divine Rights of Denim can be found at Nordstrom’s, Dillard’s, Macy’s, Buckle, M. Fredric, Ambiance and Von Maur. Happy shopping.

Audrina Partridge to turn denim designer

By Kimberley Foster on September 29th, 2008

audrina_denimdesigner.jpgNot to be outdone by her co-stars, Audrina Partridge is jumping on board the fashion bandwagon by launching her own denim line.

The reality star has reportedly landed her first endorsement deal, by signing a contract with fashion label Divine Rights of Denim, to not only co-design a collection, but to also be the face of it.

“She has that flavor to her,” said Divine’s director of sales, Angel Shoshan. “She can wear a wife beater and jeans, and she just looks comfortable and hot.”

If true, then she joins The Hills‘s Lauren, Heidi and Whitney in unveiling her own clothing range.

I guess wearing her favourite pair of DRoD jeans (‘Lust’ style, retails US$58) finally paid off for her.

Sneak peek at our fall denim guide: PZI Jeans for curvy bottoms

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on August 12th, 2008

PZI Jeans group shot.jpg

In a few weeks we’ll be bringing you a fall denim guide to help you decide on a new pair for this winter, but these PZI jeans have been the buzz of the office so we thought we’d give you a little peek.

PZI jeans are designed to fit the woman with a streamlined waist, fuller hips, and curvy bottom (see how they get their fit after the jump). We like them because they hug curves on the hips and thighs without being too baggy in the leg, and are fitted and sleek without clinging to the wrong spots or making you look top heavy.
