Alexander McQueen’s McQ to show at LFW

By Andrea Petrou on November 24th, 2011

McQ will show for the first time at London Fashion Week in February 2012.

The Alexander McQueen diffusion line’s catwalk show of their autumn/winter 2012-13 collection will serve as a preview for the label’s debut store opening later in the year.

McQ are to open a store carrying womenswear, menswear and accessories in a Georgian townhouse in London’s exclusive Mayfair district.

Yesterday, it was announced that Stella McCartney will also show for the first time at London Fashion Week.

The British designer will showcase a “one off special fashion presentation” on February 18 ahead of an assault on the British capital which will see her launch a ‘World of Stella’ exhibition of Selfridges, a new fragrance launch, and the opening of a second store.

However, she will then present her new collection in Paris, France as she has done for the past decade.

Alexander McQueen – who was known as Lee to friends – committed suicide in February 2010 but his successor Sarah Burton recently revealed the company still runs as if he were alive.

She explained: “Lee used to always say that you have to know all the rules to be able to break them.

“We have an open studio, so a big room, and it’s very visual. On the wall, there are just hundreds of images from all different kinds of periods and fabrics. Lee taught me to do things in a three-dimensional way.”

Stella McCartney to show at London Fashion Week for the first time in 2012.

By Andrea Petrou on November 23rd, 2011

Stella McCartney will show at London Fashion Week for the first time in 2012.

Meanwhile, dates for the ‘Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs’ exhibition at Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris have been announced.

The celebration of the long-running collaboration between the designer and the French leather goods firm will begin on March 6, the day before Paris Fashion Week wraps up and is set to run until September 16.

Despite being linked with a move to Christian Dior to take over from disgraced designer John Galliano, Marc recently revealed he has no plans to leave Louis Vuitton because he enjoys considerable freedom with the company.

He explained: “I could never do this anywhere else. It’s not just a Paris thing – Vuitton allows me. It’s really, really something I feel particularly proud of and am grateful to the team for. We’ve all worked really hard and gone through a lot to get this to where it is now and we’re starting to see results.”

Get the look: Fearne Cotton’s lilac prettiness at LFW

By emilyborrett on September 21st, 2011

Fearne Cotton was already nailing next season's pastel trend at LFW in a pretty lilac maxi dress with contrasting fuschia lips and leopard-print heels. Who knew it would work so well?

We love how when LFW rolls around, absolutely all the celebrities make a huge effort – even if they try to act all “oh, this old thing?” about their outfits when they’re there. Everyone’s favourite annoying radio presenter Fearne Cotton is no exception, as she wafted in to London Fashion Week yesterday to show off her new collection of designs for Very.co.uk in a gorgeous lilac maxi (we have to find out where she get it from).

Clever Fearne may just be the absolute queen of contrasting different shades and colours – after all, lilac is not the easiest colour to co-ordinate – but the tattooed nostril-ed one pulled it off with an elegant vintage bob and a plummy fuschia lipstick to contrast with the sugary tones of her dress. Adding a rock and roll twist were a pair of perfect leopard-print heels on her feet, which were teamed with a zinging yellow pedicure for a fun, playful look. We love.

We can’t find the maxi that Fearne wore (WHERE IS IT FROM??? I NEED IT!!), but there are still plenty of lilac beauties available on the high street that are great for a girlie party look. The star of this gallery, though, has to be Topshop for it’s amazing make-up range, which offers a whole rainbow of different colours of nail polishes and lips – thanks to Toppers for making the perfect fuschia lipstick just like Fearne’s, which you can find in the gallery above.

London Fashion Week SS12: House of Holland #LFW

By emilyborrett on September 19th, 2011

House of Holland Spring/Summer 2012

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

Love him or hate him, it’s pretty much impossible to dispute that when it comes to London Fashion Week, Henry Holland rules this town with his cheeky, anarchic attitude towards fashion that you get the feeling is largely influenced by his cool brat-pack of high-profile friends. The designer everyone wants to be best friends with in the hope that he’ll honour you on one of his T-shirts, his show is always going to be one of the hottest tickets in town when Fashion Week rolls around again.

The new House of Holland Spring/Summer collection that he showed on Saturday was typically Hollandesque in that there were all the bratty, cartoonish elements in his design that always remind us of old poppy coming-of-age Nickelodeon shows from the 90s and much-loved teen movies- Holland always keeps things sassy with some eye-popping prints and clunky little-girl styles that take the “Kinderwhore” look to a whole new level.

This time round the theme for his new designs was “Pastel Punks”, was immediately obvious when the first model came down the runway in a pastel colour-blocked shirt and high-waisted acid wash jeans with snakeskin heels. We bet he’s already made copies of everything in the collection for his bezzies. We loved the clever playing off of ultra-sugary pastel tones and childlike-colour blocking against the snarling aggression of sleek snakeskin boots and fishnet ankle socks.

Anyone who was hoping for some more of Holland’s patented sugary plaids won’t be let down as there are plenty of his trademark checks in bold mint and lilac colours – now all we’ve got to do is bust out our purple clogs, find some old school knee socks and we’ve got one look that Cher from Clueless would die for.

For his Spring/Summer 2012 collection, Holland has basically taken the archetypal Bad Girl, sat her down in front of some cartoons and given her a new cheeky bubblegum spin – and we have to say, trashy as the designs are, they are gloriously trashy and we can’t help loving him a little bit for just bringing some fun to the stuffiness and seriousness of one of fashion’s most prestigious events – because, really, isn’t that pretty punk and therefore pretty British of him?

London Fashion Week SS12: Jaeger London #LFW

By emilyborrett on September 19th, 2011

Jaeger Spring/Summer 2012

Picture 1 of 13
Picture 1 of 13

Jaeger is one of Britain’s most well-loved brands and in fact part of our country’s fashion heritage, so naturally their new Spring/Summer 2012 collection, which was shown on Saturday afternoon amidst a typical London downpour, deserved a bit of a scrum to get in. Which of course there was.

Jaeger’s design aesthetic normally leans towards the darker, sharper end of the spectrum with angular shapes and plenty of cool greys and blacks, so we were pleasantly surprised when on the weekend, instead of their classic and sometimes austere silhouttes and colours, we were treated to an unusually girlish array from the brand that blasted away any preconceptions that Jaeger cannot be playful with their designs. Because this collection shows that they certainly can.

Tunic dresses and tops were a big staple on Jaeger London’s catwalk for this season, artfully skimming over the models’ figures for a shape that wasn’t overtly sexy but still remained to be girlish with a lot of thanks to some very sweet scalloping and soft sorbet colours as well as virginal whites –  blush pink, icy blue and pale yellow all featured in the collection, while the brand also incorporated some more sizzling colours into their smart-casualwear. We were particularly taken by a pair of hot orange tapered trousers, which was effortlessly teamed with a light raincoat with matching orange piping.

For us, though, the show had to be all about the dresses, for as we watched the collection progress we began to see a theme of light, airy sun-dresses that fluttered around the models’ legs as they walked, teaming the stark simplicity which Jaeger is known for with other elegant, delicate touches such as chiffon hems and sweet bows at the neckline.

As Fashion Week goes, this collection may have not been earth-moving – we’ll leave that to the likes of Erdem and Westwood – but it was a gentle, pleasant surprise and a reminder that one of the UK’s oldest fashion labels shouldn’t be underestimated. We can’t wait to see what they do next.

London Fashion Week SS12: Felder Felder #LFW

By emilyborrett on September 19th, 2011

Felder Felder Spring/Summer 2012

All of the media’s coolest kids, including Peaches Geldof and Zara Martin, were out in full force last Friday at the beginning of LFW to watch Felder Felder’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection and add some hip gravitas to the proceedings.

Naturally the whole collection was just so London Fashion Week – if you ask me, LFW is the coolest of the runway seasons, even if Paris and Milan are a little more prestigious – with the Felder twins cleverly combining floaty chiffon-silks and pale digital prints with leather choker collars for a clean, tough and sexy approach to summer dressing. There were knowing hints at bondage and punk influences amongst the swirling, girly prints as leather straps in mint green and black criss-crossing across the bust of the dresses – these are designs for the girl next door with a dark secret.

The Felder girls listed their influences for the collection as “one part beach goddess, one part punk princess: otherwise known as Kate Moss on holiday”, and we can see that the supermodel has had an influence on these new Felder Felder pieces. The mystical, swirling digital prints of the floaty gowns combined with tough, glossy accessories and studs are pure Kate Moss all the way – we can predict these pieces being worn by A-listers next year at Coachella festival, for sure.

As for colour this season, FF seem to have had the same thought as many other designers and opted for ice-cream soft, warm colours for their Spring/Summer designs – but naturally even the sunniest of colours, such as mint green and coral, were given a dark edge with flashes of black leather and studs.

All in all, a beautifully executed collection from the Felder Felder girls that might just be one of the best shows this LFW. Sign us up for one of each piece, please.

London Fashion Week SS12: Marios Schwab #LFW

By Elisabeth on September 19th, 2011

Marios Schwab is one of those designers who seems to be world-famous in the fashion industry, but completely unknown to anyone else. His shows tend to cause a bit of a stampede, and yesterday was no different. Held up by the late arrival of many editors, the show ran almost 45 mins late, but it was definitely worth the wait.

As opposed to all cheerful and bright collections we’ve seen this week, Schwab went to the dark side for his Spring/Summer show. Inspired by the heroines of Film Noir cinema, the girls came down the catwalk to the tune of an old horror movie soundtrack.

The favourite label of the Duchess of Cambridge, or Kate Middleton as we still like to call her, Issa London has seen its profile raised enormously over the past year. With Kate no doubt continuing to fly the flag for the UK based label, the feminine designs shown at London Fashion Week are certain to be a hit for spring/summer 2012.

The SS12 collection is filled with glamorous, flattering shapes with girly nipped in waists in canary yellow, coral pink, and turquoise. Inspired by her birth country Brazil, Daniella Issa Helayel sent the final model down the catwalk in sequins and feathers that were like taken out of Carnevale di Rio de Janeiro.

Expect to see these designs on a royal near you next summer!

Matthew Williamson will showcase his latest collection at the Tate Modern during LFW

By emilyborrett on August 30th, 2011

Matthew Williamson has been given the opportunity to showcase his new collection specially inside the Tate Modern during London Fashion Week  (yes, it’s nearly here again, guys!)

This has never been done before, so it’s going to be a bit of a unique fashion happening. A member of Williamson’s team told Vogue: “For our spring/summer 2012 collection we have chosen to show in the turbine hall inside the Tate modern gallery on the Southbank. It’s the first time a designer has been able to show in this iconic London landmark building and we are thrilled to have this opportunity.”

Matthew said about his Tate plans: It’s an amazing space which I feel will contrast really well with the collection. I’m looking forward to creating an intimate space within the hall and seeing the intricately detailed clothes work against the stark, minimalist structure.”

Whether you have the time of day for modern art or not (I don’t at all) we think you’ll all be able to find the time for some beautiful Matthew Williamson dresses, no?

Herve Leger says todays models are uninspiring

By Andrea Petrou on March 28th, 2011

Herve Leger says he could no longer show his collections at Fashion Week because he finds today’s models uninspiring.

The designer – who used the likes of Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista in his high-profile presentations during the 90s – says the current crop of beauties aren’t in the same league and wouldn’t do his clothes justice.

He told the Daily of Lagerfeld: “If I had to go back to catwalk presentations I would be in a panic…Already the models I find are too skinny, too sad. And I knew the age of the super top models, Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford, who were always lively and smiling. Today you go between several defiles and you will see the exact same type of girl – it just doesn’t inspire me. Of course I do presentations, I do three presentations a year: spring, fall and cruise, that I show at my showroom and what I like is to have the buyers come to me. They buy, things sell well, and that really gives me the feeling of existing for something because I know that somewhere out there in the world I have clients that adore what I’m doing and that’s really reward enough.”

While he’s not impressed with today’s models, Herve is a big fan of Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld because he’s so inspiring to work with.

He said: “He is a genius! He is someone very wonderful. I started my career as a hair stylist, then hat maker, and then I met Karl and it was a shock. There is nobody like him. I had the chance to work very closely with him at Fendi and Chanel, and he gives everything. You just have to look at him work. We learn a lot with him…he is good at everything, it’s a spirit and a vision of things, and he is very, very modern.”

Designer Spotlight: The best of Christopher Kane

By Andrea Petrou on March 22nd, 2011

Christopher Kane Spring/Summer 2007

Picture 1 of 11
Picture 1 of 11

We’ve already looked at the likes of Henry Holland and Vivienne Westwood in our designer spotlight galleries, celebrating the great British talent that dazzles us at London Fashion Week each season and inspires what gets produced on the high-street. So today we’re going to look at home-grown talent Christopher Kane, who has been wowing us at LFW with his body-conscious, sexy designs since 2007.then

Ever since he exploded onto the fashion scene with a youthful, fresh and sexy collection of microscopically short bandage dresses, trimmed with neon lace and zips, he’s been the darling of the fashion industry ever since. Cited as an inspiration by young wannabe designers everywhere and hand-picked by Versace to design their diffusion line, Versus, his career has been a total fairytale so far. With the help of his sister Tammy Kane, together they’ve created a legacy.

Neon lace, cosmically starry prints, knife pleats and gingham – these are all trends that you saw at Christopher Kane first. In the gallery above we’re taking a trip back through his best collections to show you our favourite pieces that he’s designed. Our favourite is the floral-embroidered leather miniskirt – check it out here.
