Alexa Chung favours 60s styles for her figure

By emilyborrett on September 5th, 2011

Alexa Chung says that 60s-style clothes flatter her slender figure best.

The model and TV presenter has a fondness for classic 60s fashion because it was a decade that favoured leggy, gamine girls such as Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy who have a similar figure to Alexa’s.

Alexa told Harper’s Bazaar magazine: “My ex-boyfriend [photographer David Titlow] showed me Antonioni’s 1966 film ‘Blow-Up’ in my late teens. I remember seeing Jane Birkin. And I couldn’t believe it. She even made just wearing a pair of tights look sexy. . . I think the 60s vibe suits my body type, which is skinny legs and a boyish frame. It’s the groupie vibe that I’m attracted to. They had these amazing love affairs, and both the men and the women were made amazing by them. The girls in the 60s were never overshadowed by the men they dated. You can talk about Jean Shrimpton without having to mention Bailey or Terence Stamp first.”

Alexa understandably tried to distance herself from her classic 60s dress sense because every teenage girl in the UK began copying her – oh, the perils of being a style icon! She said about the Alexa copycats: “I fell out of love with the 60s for a while. I think because I was so identified with it. It’s like Sienna Miller when she did boho, then suddenly stopped because she was like, ‘F**k. What else can I do, because I’ve done it?’ Everyone copied my sodding coat for a while too. It was my Harrods kid’s vintage one. Every girl suddenly had one and I was like, ‘Arrgh!’ I got really bored of smock dresses and loafers for a while. But I feel like I’m ready to fall in love all over again.”

Yeah, I feel like that whenever thousands of teenage girls suddenly start dressing like me too, Alexa. I totally feel your pain.

Fashion Wishlist: ShinyStyle’s dream buys for the week

Bow Pleated Soft Shift Dress

This dress is so Marc Jacobs it's untrue - the ultimate first-date dress. With a chunky cardigan and a pair of vintage ankle boots, you're good to go. Find it here.

I absolutely love putting together Shiny’s fashion hot-list for the week, because for me it is basically an excuse to go window-shopping and compile a mental list of all the things that I want, nay, need the most. This week the hot-list is a merry mash of different prints, textures and styles – but did you expect any different from me?

I’m in a bit of a “back to school” mode this week which is looking towards Autumn and the weather getting colder, so I’m daydreaming about new tights, new knitwear and new bags to put all off my books in. I was especially taken with Oasis’ dreamily soft-looking pale pink tea dress with a sparkled collar detail, which is so like the Marc Jacobs design that it’s untrue. That dress is going on my list, along with a chunky cardigan and some cute ankle boots to go along with it.

My ultimate buy for the week? It has to be the Sam Edelman slipper shoes from Urban Outfitters. Slipper-style loafer shoes are massive this Autumn because they spell luxury and comfort, and you can’t get any more luxurious than this designer pair, which is covered in black gemstones and studs. So delightfully rock and roll.

Check out the gallery above for our top buys for the week.

Trend Alert: Top 10 loafers and brogues

Madison Animal-Print Loafer

With starlets everywhere choosing to chop off their looks for boyish styles and spurning evening gowns for tuxedo jackets and suits, androgyny has never been hotter than it is right now. Thanks to Dolce & Gabbana and Stella McCartney, this Autumn it’s going to be all about doing it like a dude, and we want in.

Luckily there’s a cool and easy way to go androgynous without having to wear a zoot suit, if that sounds a little daunting to you – forget your trusty ballerina flats and trade them in for a masculine, classic pair of brogues or loafers a la Alexa Chung, because within a month or so they’ll be the only flat shoe that matters. They’ll look good with anything, whether it’s a floaty summer dress or a pair of skinny jeans and a band shirt. (Especially good with skinny jeans and a band shirt).

The high street is allll over this trend – I particularly recommend Topshop, whose scarlet leopard-printed loafers are a quirky and colourful take on the trend and will look great with a pair of leggings and a slouchy jumper for a laid-back look. Another favourite pair is the metallic pewter pair from Asos, which will jazz up a pair of jeans or an old dress.

This is a great trend for us Brits because classic masculine footwear is what we do best. It’s quirky, old fashioned and cool – get on board with this season’s It shoe and check out the gallery above.

SS2010 Trend: Loafers

By Andrea Petrou on April 14th, 2010

Like them or loafe (sorry) them, loafers are making a huge come back this season.

They were hot at London Fashion Week catwalk shows back in September and a range of top designers have already begun launching these styles into the retail space.

One example is Miu Miu, which has launched a capsule shoe collection for Spring 2010.
The range will hit stores in May and has taken it’s inspiration from classic men’s shoes (hence the loafer).

Now we know they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but we’ve decided to put together a gallery anyway for those who will be donning these this summer, and remember there’s sometimes nothing better than a flat shoe, especially when it’s in-trend.
