Today's prize up for grabs in assocation with High Street Fashion Week is this chic chakra bracelet worth £86. Read more below

High Street Fashion Week has gone off with a big, sparkly, ticker-tape rainbow bang as the beginning of the week’s celebration of fashion’s best high street stores was ushered in with circus performers and models scaling the sides of buildings in the latest fashions. We’d never thought that abseiling and stilettos would ever go hand-in-hand but hey, we love to be surprised.

High Street Fashion Week, which honours our much-beloved British high street in a week-long slew of fashion parties, meet and greets and sales, takes place in the shopping mecca which is Oxford Circus and will continue until Friday.

Today kicks off with an absolute monster sale in the Debenhams department store with 25% off in ALL THE DEPARTMENTS. AND IT’LL LAST ALL WEEK. There’s also a 10% discount at the Oxford Circus Benetton store when you spend £50 – it’s time to max out your store card, girls. Meanwhile, fashion sightseers should head on over to the John Lewis where they’re housing Osman Yousefzada’s latest collection.

One of the other good things about the High Street Fashion Week is their sensational giveaway prizes and competitions, which will be going on all week. If you want to channel your inner world traveller, enter the competition to get your mitts on this elegant gold chakra bracelet (pictured above left), which as well as being boho-chic is supposed to make the wearer “articulate, resonant of voice, a good listener and thrive on creativity”. That’s a good enough reason for us! Enter the competition on the website here.

Trend Alert: Brothel creeper shoes

By emilyborrett on August 11th, 2011

Brothel creepers were all over the catwalk this season

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

They used to solely be the footwear of Camden goths and cyber-clubbers, but bizarrely brothel-creepers are the only shoe to be seen in this season if you’re a close follower of hipster fashion. We’ve seen quirky London girls Pixie Geldof and Agyness Deyn wearing them – and now even Katy Perry is getting in on the act, as she’s been spotted in a posh pair of punk-style creepers by Jeffrey Campbell.

Dolce & Gabbana’s excellently slick androgynous trend has had us all suddenly getting complete shoe-lust for creeper styles. It seems now that girly, delicate styles are out, and masculine, tough footwear is in. In the past brothel-creepers have been dauntingly unwearable, unless you’re a fifteen year-old girl in a tutu and a Marilyn Manson T-shirt. but now designers are teaming the shoe with long, tailored cigarette pants and sharp-collared blouses. They’re not all decorated with cobwebs and spiders anymore either, thanks to the likes of Asos who have created the “Monroe” creeper which comes in both patent pink and silver metallic. J’adore!

The bravest of the brave have been wearing these shoes with absolutely everything, to mixed receptions, but we think there is definitely an easy way to rock this shoe. All you need is a sharp pair of creepers (plain black ones are classic if you’re not feeling brave) with tapered trousers, a high-necked blouse and an elegant draped blazer. Just add some muted makeup with slicked-back hair and you’ve got a look fit for Fashion Week.

Check out our favourite brothel creeper shoes in the gallery above.

Spotted: Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana, Kylie Minogue and Anne Hathaway

At the première of "The Help", Emma Stone opted for a beautifully girly drop-waisted 1920s dress in soft pink

While we try to forget all the scary stuff that is happening in the UK at the moment, celebrities over the pond have been carrying on as usual. God bless ‘em.

At the world première of new film “The Help”, the Easy-A actress Emma Stone looked beautiful and serene in a very feminine mauvey-pink 1920s drop-waisted dress with nude satin heels and an old-school Hollywood white chain purse. Emma is seriously our beauty crush right now, so it’s no wonder she’s just been snapped up by Revlon.

Meanwhile at the “One Day” première, we spotted our favourite actress Anne Hathaway looking pretty and simple in a black taffeta prom dress with beautiful gold shimmer detailing around the neckline. The understated make-up and loose hair went perfectly with the look. Also there was the supermodel Coco Rocha, who was rocking 70s glamour in a white and silvery-grey strapless maxi with huge Halston-style diamond earrings.

Snapped by the paps in Manhattan was our favourite celebrity wife, Katie Holmes, looking impeccable in the most perfect pair of jeans (we suspect J Brands) with a slouchy white T-shirt and nude patent heels. We loved her vintage wavy hair, too. Zoe Saldana was rocking a tough utility look in LA, wearing a ruched khaki miniskirt with grey wedges and aviator heels. We love!

Also spotted was Ashley Tisdale coming out of a salon in LA, toting not one but TWO giant handbags, swishing her incredibly blonde and tousled hair about and looking cool in pale-blue skinny jeans and a cable knit sweater.

And finally, not everyone is terrified and miserable in England, as some celebs rocked up to the West End in Piccadilly Circus to see the new “Ghost” musical. Kylie Minogue was there (we’ve just done a piece on the daring clashing animal-print outfit she wore – check the site to see) and so was the Saturdays’ Rochelle, who looked sexy and polished in a pale grey-blue bandage dress. Herve Leger perhaps?

Check out the gallery to see who we’ve been spotting.

Best of British: Countdown of the best-dressed celebrities in Britain

By emilyborrett on August 2nd, 2011

All this tweed, men’s tailoring and classic English footwear that’s on trend at the moment has totally got me all patriotic and proud of the United Kingdom’s style, from Vivienne Westwood and the birth of punk through to the happy acid-neon world of Henry Holland. As the fashion industries go, Britain’s is amazing. And on that note, it’s about high time we paid tribute to the UK’s sense of style with a countdown of our best dressed celebrities. Here we go…

10. Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley

Picture 1 of 10
Picture 1 of 10

Good old Rosie is a recent addition to our style radar, following her pretty sensational entrance into the modelling world. Men want her and women want to be her - but we also want her wardrobe too. Never without a literally jaw-dropping red carpet outfit (such as the one pictured above, which made even me fancy her a little bit) to show off that killer body, she also knows all about cool day-time dressing, supermodel style, in leather trousers, skinny jeans and cool khaki separates for a look that's laid-back and effortless. Welcome to the list, Rosie.

Spotted: Rosie Huntingdon-Whitely, Julia Roberts, Freida Pinto and Alexa Chung

By emilyborrett on June 29th, 2011

Fearne Cotton looked cool and laid-back yesterday leaving work in a simple floral shirt teamed with tight black denim and killer leather heels

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

Yesterday was a good day for the paparazzi, as it seems there were celebrities out in full force all over the place for swanky bashes. Well, besides Fearne Cotton – as always we spotted her on her way out of the Radio One studios where she works, looking cute and dressed-down in a slightly wrinkled floral shirt teamed up with some Mad Max-style wedges and jeans so tight they could have been sprayed on. We love Fearne for keeping it real. I know if I was aware of paparazzi photographing me all the time, I’d probably wear a ballgown every where.

Further across London, in leafy Hyde Park, a party thrown by the Serpentine Gallery had guests in attendance such as Alexa Chung, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and Grayson (who we have to say, looked very pretty indeed in his party dress). Alexa Chung was on full fashion form, wearing a beautifully cut and tailored navy dress with one of her trademark puritanical white collars, with a pair of the highest black leather heels we have ever seen. Seriously, we are in awe of Alexa’s heels – full props to her for wearing those anywhere. Meanwhile, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld came to the party looking quite sexy and French in a sheer black blouse teamed with a curve-hugging black skirt. Who knows if we’ll ever see her wearing any colour, but moody dressing does suit her.

Diane Kruger looked very ooh-la-la on the arm of her current squeeze, Joshua Jackson, at a party thrown by Jaeger in Paris wearing a striking lace and brocade midnight-blue dress with a raspberry-pink clutch and simple accessories. Diane Kruger will always and forever be one of our favourite celebrity dressers.

Across the pond in New York, the scarily, horribly gorgeous Rosie Huntingdon-Whitely made an appearance at the première for Transformers: Dark Side of The Moon, in which she has a starring role. The supermodel looked statuesque in a floor-sweeping scarlet gown to  match her sizeable pout. Anyone who wishes Megan Fox was still the pin-up of the Transformers franchise is probably saying “Megan who?” after yesterday. We also saw Julia Roberts outside filming for an appearance on the David Letterman show looking AMAZING in a pair of aviator sunglasses worn with a delicate white shift dress and a baggy masculine blazer that worked the hard/soft angle perfectly.

And finally, some of the silver screen’s fashion darlings were in attendance yesterday at an intimate showing of Salvatore Ferragamo’s 2012 Cruise Collection. Pretty young actress Emma Roberts (niece of Julia! I wonder if they hung out in NYC yesterday), who is rapidly becoming a hot commodity amongst stylists and designers, looked pretty with soft wavy hair and a sumptuous purple velvet wrap dress. Freida Pinto, “Slumdog Millionaire” star and a renowned fashion lover, was there looking chic in a knotted graphic-print silk halterneck with a neat white skirt and tan accessories. We love that she’s giving nods to the 70s trend right now.

Our final best-dressed celeb spotted yesterday was sultry mama Eva Mendes, who was also at the Ferragamo show in an elegant wrap dress that combined both cream and camel tones. She looked like a movie star from the 1970s.

Check out the gallery above for our best-dressed celebs spotted yesterday.

Marchesa to resurrect the traditional Playboy bunny costume for new London club launch

By emilyborrett on April 21st, 2011

Marchesa's sketch for their planned revamp of the legendary "Bunny Girl" costume

An unlikely marriage of two worlds is about to happen as luxury fashion house Marchesa, home to a million frills and jewels fit for a fashion princess, reveals their sketch of a one-off design of the iconic 70′s playboy bunny costume in honour of the new opening of a Playboy Club in London.

Designers Georgia Chapman and and Keren Craig are reinventing the classic bunny-girl one piece, but not as we know it – expect ruffles, jewels and (we hope) a solid-gold tail. (As I said – we hope.)

Georgia Chapman said of the label’s design for the Playboy franchise, “We’ve taken our inspiration from the original costume but added Marchesa’s signature details, such as hand draping and embroidery, while staying true to the Playboy Bunny’s classic corset silhouette. The result is a modern, yet feminine interpretation of this legendary look.”

Playboy was a suave gentleman’s lifestyle magazine back in the day (with some pretty nude bunnies thrown in for good measure) but in recent years the whole thing has become a bit, well, seedy. Can a magical sprinkling of fashion dust change the face of Playboy again? Forget the cheap pink satin and white fluffy mules of yesteryear – Hef’s girls are about to get a luxury makeover. We’re a little bit jealous, actually.

The Olympics gets a fashion fix as the help of Zandra Rhodes is enlisted

By Andrea Petrou on March 16th, 2011

By Emily Borrett.

Zandra's sketch for the 33-foot puppet which will be unveiled at the 2012 Olympics in London

I have to admit that sports are not my thing. When it was announced that London would be hosting the 2012 Olympics, my first thought was how pointlessly showy and expensive the whole thing will be, and how jam-packed the tubes will be full of tourists. But now the event has piqued my interest, with the news that British fashion veteran Zandra Rhodes is going to be contributing to the celebrations with a 33-foot puppet of Lady Godiva. Yep – that’s right, a giant fashion puppet. That’ll shut up anyone who tries to claim that Brits have no sense of fun.

The lucky Lady Godiva puppet will be decked out in a Medieval-inspired one-of-a-kind dress designed by Zandra Rhodes herself, and made with the helping hands of fashion design students in Coventry, where the legend of Lady Godiva originates from. In the original tale, she rides naked through the city on horseback – so it’ll be probably a nice change to be covered up for once.

The puppet will then be transported from Coventry to the site of the Olympics with a fleet of cyclists. It all sounds a bit mental, but amazing. The Olympics just got a bit more interesting.

London celebrates Yohji Yamamoto with an exhibit at the V&A Museum

By Andrea Petrou on March 13th, 2011

By Emily Borrett.

Yohji Yamamoto has long been a much-loved designer in all of the fashion capitals ever since his Fashion Week debut in the beginning of the 1980s, a decadent and exciting time for fashion. Since then he has consistently pushed the boundaries of avant-garde and created collection upon collection of exciting fashion.

In a way of thanks, London has made space in the much-loved Victoria & Albert Museum which will showcase his most loved designs, including menswear from his POUR HOMME line.

If you’re a textiles/fashion student the exhibition is a must-see. It’s an opportunity to see some of the most experimental work of one of our generation’s most mysterious and elusive designers; the exhibition features the designer’s exploration into the concept of cut and tailoring, as well as playing with traditional features of Japanese kimono to create edgy, innovative fashion.

The exhibition, which opened to the public yesterday, is at the Victoria & Albert Museum in central London.

Get the look: Katie Waissel

There’s been a lot of fashion rivalry between the three X-Factor female finalists (well, not Rebecca so much, she’s just being lovely and keeping her head down – it’s all that RUDDY KATIE AND CHER). If you’ve decided that you’re team Katie all the way, and love her mash-up between London street-punk style and vintage glamour, then read on.

Katie seems to be a firm believer in mixing things up, never rocking the same look twice – she’s like an Asda-version of Lady Gaga. For her first appearance on the X-Factor she appeared complete with crazy blonde perm, headscarves and studded leather a la Madonna circa-1980s, for her performance at bootcamp she opted for a more subtle outfit of a silver shirt-dress (of which we found a very similar one that you can see in the gallery above), and then at Cheryl’s home in Surrey a very dainty “My Fair Lady”-esque outfit complete with white lace and parasol. So yeah, unlike her Liverpudlian competitor Rebecca who’s already developing a classic “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” style, Katie doesn’t like sticking to one trend.

If you’re looking to get a little bit of her mixed-up quirkiness into your daily wear, it’s all about the details. Team a studded biker jacket with some glamorous retro-sunglasses and some old-school over-the-top costume jewellery, or go inject a little 1930s Hollywood glamour into an otherwise plain, more contemporary outfit with a vintage hat or fascinator. We trawled the internet and found some pieces that would be right up Miss Waissel’s street- check the gallery above to see what we found.

Liberty: brighten up your day with their trademark prints

By emilyborrett on July 9th, 2010

Just as Audrey Hepburn famously declared that she was “simply crazy about Tiffany’s”, I’m equally crazy about the Liberty store in Carnaby Street, London. For a few years now its been an annual tradition for me, my mum and my sister to go there in our Sunday best for hours of window shopping, followed by tea and cake in one of its’ tearooms. And it really does take hours to fully do the rounds. If you’ve never been before, it’s worth the train into London – it’s a huge, grand, multi-storey building full of beautiful things to gawp at, from hand-made jewellery, stationary and clothes, to chandeliers, rugs and other homeware. Unfortunately I’m not really to be trusted on the higher floors where the most expensive items are kept, because I’m so clumsy (if I remember correctly, last time I was there I almost knocked over a crystal bowl worth about £1,000 with my bag). However, whilst many of the items on sale in Liberty are way beyond any budget of us little folk, you can still pick up something in one of their iconic prints for a reasonable price.

The famous Liberty prints, which have been in production since the 1960s, are a riotous explosion of psychelic paisleys that have never gone out of fashion; they’re completely evocative of the spirit of 1960s Carnaby Street, one of the most famous sites in London. Even a little piece from Liberty is an exciting splash of colour – some of my favourites of their smaller, more affordable pieces were their luggage tags, keyrings and notebooks (I’m a sucker for a pretty notebook) in the shop’s unmistakeable prints and patterns. My personal favourite out of their prints was the pink peacock-fan print, as I felt girly and summery just looking at it.

If you want to inject some Liberty-style splashes of colour into your life, look at the gallery below for the best of their little bits, perfect for a Carnaby girl on a budget.

Spotted: Stars turn up for the Elephant Parade auction and BNTM 6 launch

By Andrea Petrou on July 1st, 2010

Yesterday the stars were once again out for various events across the country. Notably the Elephant Parade auction held at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, which saw the model elephants, which have been scattered around the capital, being auctioned off for charity.

Liz Hurley attended the event in a pink long frock while Goldie Hawn also made an appearance in a gorgeous floral maxi dress. And it was also a night for royal fashion with Princess Princess Beatrice and Eugenie making an appearance. Both opted for short dresses, however, while Beatrice went for a strapless summer yellow ruffle frock, Euginie played it safe in a white scoop neck.

Across the capital Elle MacPherson stepped out in PVC black trousers and a white cropped tee for the launch of Britain’s Next Top Model 6, which is due to hit our screens very soon and we also got a quick glimpse of the girls who will be competing.

However, it wasn’t all free booze and partying for every celeb, Carly Zucker, wife of Joe Cole was also spotted enjoying a leisurely stroll before her England player hubby returned home.

Spotted in London: Kylie Minogue, Davina McCall and Victoria Beckham

By Andrea Petrou on June 9th, 2010

London saw a huge range of A-listers descending last night for the Glamour Women of the Year Awards, however, that’s not the only reason why some hit the town yesterday and this morning.

Last night Victoria Beckham caused a great commotion after stepping out of the Metropolitan Hotel where she was staying. The fashionista looked chic and stylish (we wouldn’t expect anything less) in a black tafetta longsleeved frock and trademark skyscraper heels.

Earlier in the day we spotted Kylie Minogue looking cool and casual in jeans and ballet pumps. She finished off the look with a statement bag.

Katherine Heigl also went for jeans when she stepped out of her hotel yesterday, while Fearne Coton opted for denim on her way into work this morning looking a little bit dishevelled – we can only imagine that this was due too a little bit too much champagne last night at the Glamour Awards.

We just hope Davina McCall’s blue shoes weren’t too bright for Ms Cotton when she interviewed her this morning ahead of the last series of Big Brother, which launches tonight.
