Top five classic hair trends given a Spring/Summer 2012 twist

By Andrea Petrou on February 1st, 2012

We’ve cleared out our make up bags ready for the S/S beauty trends and will soon be shoving our snoods and scarves to the back of the wardrobe. And that leaves us with just one more thing- our hair.

Next season there’s a huge range of hairstyles, many of which have been given a little twist from the 80s.

Rebecca Taylor amongst others showed off the 80s slicked back look, whilst Chanel reinvented the classic chignon.

Over at Louis Vuitton the slim sparkly hairband made an appearance and Valentino showed us how braids can be worn bang on-trend next season.

See the gallery below for the top five reinvented styles of SS 2012.

Top five SS 2012 looks from Paris Haute Couture week

By Andrea Petrou on January 25th, 2012

Yesterday we bought you all the fashion fun from the Versace Haute Couture show and today we only thought it fair that we included a range of the other gorge designs shown off at this event.

We’ve therefore decided to put together what we think are the best five looks from a range of designers at this year’s fashion shin ding.

Of course we couldn’t compile a list like this without including Chanel, which amongst other great designs gave us a very 50s sequined blue shift frock with a hint of 80s styling in the shoulders.

Dior gave us a stunning girly net tea length dress, while Louis Vuitton went all lacey and 60s with a cute cream frock.

Over at Giorgio Armani the tone was all glam, with our fashion eyes landing on a metallic fishtail frock and bolero, while Stephane Rolland went all out with a flamboyant twisted white skirt and black bodice. We heart.

See the gallery below for our top five.

Top five new models to watch in 2012

By Andrea Petrou on January 11th, 2012

Move over Miranda Kerr and Karlie Kloss, there’s a new model pack in town.

Whilst we adore you, it seems designers are slowly moving the bar, introducing younger, fresh faced ladies with a different look to showcase their creations.

This year it’s all about haughty, willowy gals such as Maja Salamon who was a hot face on the Balenciaga catwalk and Dempsey Stewart who captured the fashion world’s hearts at Louis Vuitton’s SS 2012 runway.

See our top five new faces in the gallery below.

Gallery: Statement tights and socks for Autumn/Winter

A double-breasted trench coat in a caper green that hits the spot.

Even though it’s only the end of August, it’s getting colder in the UK and all of my lazy-student instincts are telling me to go and get under the covers and sleep until winter is over.

I have to say, I hate the cold weather, with a passion – I am definitely a summer girl. So one of my little pick-me-ups when summer is over is to start planning new, fashionable ways to wrap up warm, and nothing can update or transform an outfit like a pair of great fashion tights or socks.

Marc Jacobs used a lot of polka dot hosiery in his Autumn/Winter collection, something that the high street has picked up on and copied. For a girlish Minnie Mouse look, team a pastel-coloured midi skirt with Asos’ nude polka-dotted ankle socks with a pair of high heels in the milder months – when it gets colder, go for a pair of polka-dot tights instead.

Another sexy hosiery trend is the sex-siren look that we saw on the fetish-inspired catwalk of Louis Vuitton, where it was all about peekaboo black underwear with tight corsetry, fur and terrifying heels. Asos have an amazing pair of 40s-style seamed stocking with tiny sparkle details on them for a pin-up feel. Just wear them with a leather skirt and a prim blouse and you’ve got a sizzling hot fashion look to go.

Or if you just want to keep your tootsies warm during the evenings, try a cute pair of statement socks – we absolutely adore Urban Outfitter’s lace mohair ankle socks, which are just so pretty and feminine.

Check out the gallery above to see our favourite tights and socks for this Autumn.

Marc Jacobs praises Kate Moss for being “unique”

By emilyborrett on August 18th, 2011

The designer Marc Jacobs has gushingly spoken out about his admiration for the supermodel Kate Moss, who closed his fetish-inspired Louis Vuitton  runway show this season to much applause.

Marc puts Kate’s enduring success and popularity as a model down to her “unique” and “huge” presence – according to the designer there are not many models like Kate.

Jacobs told Vogue: “I mean Kate is, besides being physically beautiful and an incredibly charismatic and extraordinary personality, just very rare – if not totally unique. Kate can be just Kate, and the presence is just huge. She fills space, indoor and outdoor, studio space and pages, with such life. That energy really comes through in any and everything that she does.”

It sounds to us like Marc’s got a bit of a girl-crush on Kate, but can you blame him? This is one of our favourite friendships within the fashion industry.

Rumours rife that Marc Jacobs is to leave Louis Vuitton to work at Dior

By emilyborrett on August 11th, 2011

BREAKING FASHION GOSSIP! The Brazilian website Glamurama claims to have spoken to sources close to Bernard Arnault, the chairman of LVMH, and gleaned the gossip that super-designer Marc Jacobs is hotly tipped to leave his position at Louis Vuitton to become creative director of Christian Dior

There’s been an awful lot of speculation over who would take over Christian Dior following John Galliano’s disgracing – Azzedine Alaia and Riccardo Tisci have both been considered – but we have to say the idea of Arnault encouraging Marc to take over Dior is an incredibly exciting thought.

The site claims: “The two have met often in recent weeks to discuss the matter. Jacobs, the current creative director of Louis Vuitton, renewed his contract with LVMH in January – and it is possible for him to continue in his current position even if he takes over Dior. More likely, however, is that he’ll end up choosing between one of two. Arnault would prefer him to go to Dior – as the billionaire sees it; Jacobs image will only be good for the fashion house, which was considerably shaken by the Galliano scandal.”

As we all know, the position of creative director at Christian Dior has been standing empty ever since John Galliano made an unfortunate racist slur in Paris. We’ve been absolutely dying to find out which direction the iconic fashion house will be taken in, and who will take it there. Hopefully it won’t be long now until we find out.

Marc Jacobs for Dior? Who knows. Watch this space..

Angelina Jolie has Core Values for Louis Vuitton

By Andrea Petrou on June 14th, 2011

Angelina Jolie is the latest celebrity to appear in Louis Vuitton’s Core Values campaign.

The 35-year-old actress follows Bono and his wife Ali Hewson, Sean Connery and Francis Ford Coppola and his daughter Sofia in posing for the luxury brand and Pietro Beccari, Louis Vuitton’s executive vice president, is looking forward to showing a different side to the star.

Of the campaign which shows Angelina barefoot, wearing her own clothes and carrying her personal monogrammed Alto bag, he told WWD: “People are not used to seeing Angelina in this situation. I like the fact that it’s a real moment. This travel message we give through personal journeys is a fundamental one for the brand.

“This campaign is about a very special person and a very special journey.”

Although the Alto bag featured in the campaign is no longer in production, Pietro explained “we are considering to re-edit it”.

The pictures – taken by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz in Siem Reap, Cambodia – will be released internationally on Wednesday (15.06.11).

Angelina has donated an undisclosed portion of her fees to a charity.

Angelina Jolie to front the Louis Vuitton campaign? We take a look at her style

By Andrea Petrou on April 26th, 2011

The rumour mill is buzzing this morning with news that stunning starlet Angelina Jolie could be the new face of Louis Vuitton.

The actress is said to be taking on the role, which will net her a record pay check for endorsement – a huge $10 million. It is claimed that Angelina had some help from her friends with the latest ad campaign starring the likes of Freja Beha Erichson, Raquel Zimmermann and Kristen McMemeny.

According to reports from E!, the campaign will be shot by Annie Leibowitz in the next two weeks. She’ll join the likes of Madonna and Jennifer Lopez who have also taken on this role.

We’re actually quite surprised it took this long for the starlet to get a deal like this. Her 50s style reflects the classic nature of Louis Vuitton and her elegant red carpet dresses are also a perfect match to the brand. See the gallery below for a mini style spotlight on Angelina Jolie.

Designer Spotlight: Best of Louis Vuitton

Autumn/Winter 2010

Picture 1 of 11

Carrying on with our archive galleries of our very favourite designers and their best designs, today we’re going to look at Louis Vuitton, one of France’s most loved and celebrated design houses. Even if you’re not familiar with their collections, you’ll probably know what their luxury handbags and luggage looks like – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to some truly gorgeous work.

We’ve got a lot to thank Louis Vuitton for – three cheers for the fashion house that brought womanly curves back into vogue with a now unforgettable Autumn/Winter 2010 collection, which featured the likes of Lara Stone and Elle MacPherson wiggling down the runway in staggeringly sexy nipped-in 1950s dresses and two-piece suits. And thus the ladylike trend was born, one of the most flattering trends to have surfaced for a while.

We also fell hard for their 2011 spring/summer collection which showed an opulent range of oriental-inspired silk prints, and their delightfully silly 2010 collection filled with florals, bows, fluff and afro wigs galore. This is truly a fashion house that never fails to surprise us. Have a look at our favourite LV moments in the gallery above.

Kate Moss closes Louis Vuitton show at Paris Fashion Week by smoking a cigarette.

By Andrea Petrou on March 9th, 2011

Kate Moss closed the Louis Vuitton show at Paris Fashion Week today by smoking a cigarette.

The supermodel – famed for her love of smoking – looked stunning in a sexy black creation from the fashion house’s fall/winter 2011/12 collection as she strutted down the runway while puffing away.

The 37-year-old is scarcely seen in the catwalk anymore and her appearance was met with cheers from the glamorous audience.

Yesterday (08.03.11), Sarah Burton showcased her second collection for Alexander McQueen and impressed with her “exquisite” presentation.

Speaking of the show and Sarah – who was named as the label’s creative director following the suicide of Alexander McQueen last February – British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman said: “It was, the workmanship was wonderful and so was all that lovely corsetry in contrast to the amazing pleating. It wasn’t angry or aggressive – I thought it was even more confident than last season when she [Sarah Burton] obviously used a lot of the heritage of the house. This time she’s adapted it. It’s different – even the way the girls walk is different.”

Earlier in the day, Alexa Chung and Florence Welch were in the front row for the Valentino show where delicate beading, ruffles and sheer lace adorned dresses, skirts and knits.

Trend Alert: Best midi-skirts on the high street

The Louis Vuitton AW10 show that sparked the trend

Picture 1 of 6
Picture 1 of 6

Earlier this year Louis Vuitton showcased their ladylike, Mad Men-esque Autumn/Winter collection at Paris Couture Week to worldwide applause from the fashion world – it was revolutionary! Women don’t have to worry about squats and leg waxing anymore, because all of a sudden it’s become cutting edge to dress demurely and cover up your pins with an elegant below-the-knee midi skirt. Celebrities who in the past have opted for hemlines as short as they get, such as Alexa Chung, are now sporting the ladylike midi with fashion gusto. The Queen must be delighted.

However, us regular people have been a little more hesitant to embrace the trend in the worries in the fear of looking dowdy, or not pulling the look off. But as temperatures continue to drop as winter approaches, I predict that you’ll be feeling pretty bitter when you’re stuck in miniskirts come December – which is why the midi is a trend we should all try to embrace.

The trick to the midi is moderation. Just because your skirt has suddenly got longer, it doesn’t mean that you can’t look sexy any more, especially if you get your hands on one that nips you in at the waist for a 50s bombshell figure – it’s all about striking the balance between sexy and ladylike. For example, if you’re wearing a midi and a cosy winter jumper, make sure that you’ve got some viciously fierce heels on your feet to remind everyone that no, you’re not a prude. Or, for true Louis Vuitton understated sexiness, wear yours with a vampy corset top for a party look. Check the gallery above for the top 5 midi-skirts that I’ve found on the high street.

Lara Stone sues French Playboy and we put together a gallery of some of her week

By Shiny writer on July 29th, 2010

Lara Stone is suing French Playboy, claiming it has published unauthorised pictures.
Our favourite model is furious that pictures taken by photographer Greg Lotus last year, have ended up on the pages of the magazine without her permission. However it is not known how the snaps, which include topless and full-frontal fashion images, made their way into the June/July issue.

Lara has now asked her lawyers to begin proceedings. She said in a statement: “It’s not the kind of publication I would ever choose to appear in. Playboy had no right to publish these unauthorised photographs. I feel I have no option but to take steps to protect my reputation.

We totally agree with Lara, she may not be adverse to appearing in the buff, doing so for a range of magazines in the past, but it’s wrong for Playboy to just steal these images.

We’ll keep you updated but in the meantime we’ve put together a gallery of some the photos that appeared in Playboy and some of the work Ms Stone should be proud of. Let us know what you think about this, and of her campaigns by leaving your comments below.

Five key pieces to carry you into Autumn/Winter this year

By emilyborrett on July 13th, 2010

While summer could hardly be considered drawing to a close – I mean, it’s only July – it’s that transitional time of year for fashion when the new Autumn/Winter lines arrive, and we begin to idly plan what we’ll be wearing next season once the sun’s finally gone away. To prevent any of you ladies getting into a flap about what you should be buying for your autumn wardrobes when you still haven’t sorted out your wardrobe for your impending summer holiday, here is your Autumn wish-list, courtesy of Shiny Style.

Those whose summer diets haven’t really gone the way as planned will be happy to know that they don’t have to stress about body-con this year, as the maxi-dress will still be going strong once the holidays are over. Richard Nicolls’ collection is an example of how we should be rocking floor-lengths this Autumn/Winter. Trade in bright, summer-friendly prints and fabrics for something a little more luxe; think rich velvets, lace, chiffon and feathers. After all, winter is the party season.

However, if you’re looking for something a teensy bit more form-fitting, be on the lookout for more 1950s dress shapes in the shops this autumn. The full-skirted dresses as seen on the Louis Vuitton catwalks were sexed up with corset tops, creating the perfect balance between ladylike and sexy.

You should also get ready to dress for sub-zero temperatures as the hot trend for the upcoming fashion season is.. sheepskin! Perfect for cold winter weather, Phillip Lim showed us on the catwalk how to make sheepskin work for us: opt for leather jackets with a sheepskin collar and lining for an instant update on the biker-girl trend. Sheepskin will also be a strong presence in footwear once summer is past. Keep an eye out for workman’s boots with sheepskin this winter as seen on the catwalks of Burberry Prorsum – a coolier, grungier version of the shoe boot that will keep your tootsies warm all winter.Caramel and camel tones will continue to be stylish, as seen on the catwalk for Chloe’s ready-to-wear show. If you don’t want to go head-to-toe caramel, an easy way to incorporate the trend into your wardrobe is a tailored camel coat that will keep you snug during the winter.

Check the gallery below for this year’s A/W trends.

Louis Vuitton designs carry case for the World Cup Trophy

By Andrea Petrou on June 2nd, 2010

Louis and Naomi.jpg

Like it or not the World Cup is very nearly upon us. And if you thought you could escape it by sticking your head in the fashion mag sand then think again because footie fever has hit even the biggest designers. One example is Louis Vuitton who has created an 18ct gold travel case to hold the World Cup trophy until it is handed to the winning team in July.

The designer unveiled the travel case, which is covered in Louis Vuitton’s iconic monogram canvas and fitted with the company’s signature brass lock and corners, alongside Naomi Campbell.
