I confess that I would be much, much more comfortable if we all just used foundation. It’s all got so fiddly. There’s special primer for your eyes, now. We have to clean our faces with giant electric toothbrushes. We’re romping down the alphabet, giddly inventing more problems, more solutions, more stuff. Our bags, bathrooms and bodies are crammed full of products, teetering islands of cosmetic torture glistening under Radon.

Dr Brandt CC Mat, £34, available exclusively from Feelunique.com
But when I calm down, take a deep breath and stop riffing on Daisy Steiner’s Ode To A VCR, I realise some stuff is invented to make our routines simpler, not more complicated. And so it is with Dr Brandt CC cream. I do like a BB cream, but they can be a little lightweight for me. (For what it’s worth, esteemed coeditor Lauren Bravo swears by nothing but BB cream and a little powder, and she has skin like a duchesses’ freshly plumped peach satin pillow case.) Dr Brandt was the CC cream pioneer - stop laughing, that’s a thing! – and invented an all in one, oil free, mattifying formula created to even out your skin tone, so you can look as smooth and evenly toned as someone in an advertisement.
The cream feels quite heavy – hardcore BB fans might be alarmed by this, but I loved the fullness of the coverage – it was reassuringly textured, like an enevelope full of birthday money. And as well as instantly mattifying your skin, the formula reduces oil production over time, so you’re investing in future non-shininess. (Obviously we are PRO Shinyness – but no-one likes face shininess). It’s perfect for summer as it has an SPF of 30, and it has staying power – you could probably wear it during Bikram and it wouldn’t slide off your face.

Ever had an epiphany at the make up counter? Writer Amy Jones tells us how Benefit’s Posie Tint lip and cheek stain became the best thing in her life
A few weeks ago, I was in Boots and paused in the Posh Make-Up bit. After roughly 2.3 nanoseconds a small, terrifying woman appeared and asked if I’d like my make-up done. I was feeling sad and ugly that day so, thinking a make-over would cheer me up, I said yes.
Never say yes. Especially not when you’re feeling sad and ugly. She rubbed potions on my face for half an hour, repeating “Don’t you think that looks good?” in such an aggressive tone I was too frightened to do anything but nod meekly, and when she’d finished she bundled me off to the counter and talked me into spending £60 on three items of make-up in a month I was struggling to make bus money.
It was one of the most uncomfortable experiences of my entire life, but I would gladly go through it a hundred times more because it led me to one of my most favourite beauty things in the world. Hell, one of my favourite things in the world full stop — if there’s ever a fire in my flat, my boyfriend and photo albums can sod right off as I’m coming back to save my Benefit Posie Tint.
Ah, Posie Tint. It’s a teeny-tiny pot of bright pink lip and cheek stain that makes my pale, lifeless complexion looks sweet and rosy in just a few swipes. I put it on before taking some photographs last weekend and, genuinely, it was the first photograph in two years where I didn’t look like a reanimated corpse.
That’s not even getting started on what it’s done for my lips. I love the idea of lipstick but I’m crap at putting it on – it comes off quickly, looks weird on my thin lips etc. Not this stuff. Smear it on, let it dry for 30 seconds, I’ve got beautiful pink lips that last ‘til lunch. It doesn’t even clash with my ginger hair.
I’ve always been one of those women who was a bit crap with make-up and loathed putting it on, but since Posie Tint has entered my life I actually looking forward to it. It makes me look so pretty that I’m happier and more confident in my own face. I’ve become one of those people that carries a little make-up bag around with them so they can touch it up.
The tiny pot costs £24.50, which made me splutter at first but actually I think it’s going to last for absolutely ages as you need such a tiny amount. For the confidence and joy in make-up it’s given me, it’s worth every penny.

Beauty fans, here’s some exciting news: Lancôme has announced it is working with Lavin designer Alber Elbaz on an exclusive make-up range that will launch later this year.
Very little has been said about the Lancôme x Alber Elbaz limited edition range so far, but we’re sure it will be a pretty one! Lancôme has released a self-portrait illustration by Elbaz as well as a teaser video.
We can’t wait to see the result!

Surely if you try hard enough, all foundations can be removed with a bucket splash of water? Of course having a proper make-up remover gel or face wash is considered best, but if finding yourself without such things water ought to help.
Determined to make your skincare regime a bit easier, Japanese brand Shiseido has created a foundation that can be removed with just warm water. And any make-up you apply on top can also be easily washed off without a make-up remover.
The foundation is said to help smooth fine lines and unevenness, hydrate and illuminate skin with a natural glow, among other things. With claims of creating a flawless finish, we’re not sure how ground breaking the ‘Fullmake Washable Base’ (was something lost in translation?) is, but we’d love to try it! The foundation is set to hit shops in Japan from March. We’ll let you know if /when we find a UK stockist. If not, it might be time to dig out our passports and head East.

Doutzen Kroes looked hot in a red sleeved mini dress at this weekend’s Victoria’s Secret What Is Sexy? event pink carpet.
The model was joined by a range of celebs including Alexa Vega who went for a cute leopard print frock and Sasha Pieterse who looked girly and cute in a flowing pale pink number.
Beauty wise Mena Suvari showed off her blonde locks in a bob and went all Californian with her choice of bronze make up. Emma Roberts on the other hand kept her makeup simple with a choice of pastel colours, and her hair up.
See the gallery below for all the fashion and beauty pics.

We must admit we’ve had a bit of a girl crush on Adele for a while now. So when we saw her looking all glamorous and gorgeous when performing at the BRITs the other week, we couldn’t help but wish we kind of looked like her.
Adele has made the flirty 50s flick her trademark and we’re sure many ladies out there are wondering how they can copy the singer’s look for their own time in the spotlight – that’s every day, any day. Well wonder no more! With the help of international celebrity and bridal make-up artist Helen Kalli, here is a step-by-step guide on how to re-create Adele’s beautiful make-up (just scroll down below the image).

Face:
Firstly use Shu Uemura’s UV under base BB mousse £29 for smoothing out the skin and helps hold onto makeup.
Chanel ‘s Vital Lumiere Satin finish Foundation £33 is great for giving a dewy, fresh faced skin. It has a medium buildable coverage and works well when applied with a brush! This is giving Adele that beautiful fluid skin – perfection!
Always set your foundation with a translucent powder, I love Ben Nye colourless powder; this will give you longevity and a shine free face!
Eyes:
Apply Lancôme’s Ombre Absolute Momo Radiant Smoothing Eye shadow in Moonlight £16.50 all over the lid and under the brow, then use Laura Mercier’s Fresco on the crease to give definition.
Then use a gel liner like Maybelline’s Eye Studio Lasting Drama £5.99 to create a sultry feline eye. I would apply with a flat liner brush rather than a pointed brush, as this will help you to get a straight line. Always do the eye you find harder to do first, as this will help when matching them up!
Lash on with Eylure Naturalites False Eyelashes Glamour £5.35 for the ultimate red carpet finish!
Cheeks:
Use Shu Uemura’s Glow on Blush £9.75 Pearl Pink on the apples on the cheeks.
Brows:
Adele has perfectly groomed brows! This is key to frame the face. I would recommend using a powder as it gives a softer look and is easier to use rather than pencil. Laura Mercier’s Brow duos are fab!
Lips:
Use Chanel’s Rouge Coco Shine Hydrating Lipshine in Aventure £23 Adele’s kept it soft which is perfect, but you could go for a soft red if you prefer!

Bright lipsticks and smokey eyes were the beauty orders of the evening at this weekend’s Oscars.
Angelina Jolie gave a nod to the classic Hollywood red lips and ensured they stood out keeping the rest of her make up minimal.
Miley Cyrus also went for a bright lip colour but also gave a nod to this season’s cat eye trend, while Michelle Williams mixed vibrant lips with smokey eyes.
Moving away from this trend was Victoria Beckham who went for a dewey look to accentuate her bold smokey eyes, as did Natalie Portman who went for a bold eye colour and thick liner completed with a splash of bold lippy.
See the gallery below for our top five make up looks of the night.

Like the frocks at this year’s National Television Awards, the make up did us proud.
There was hardly any over tanned Orangutans in sight and no streaky legs of faces. Instead stars from the TV world looked to next seasons hottest make up trends to make their beauty stand on the red carpet.
Tulisa redeemed her disastrous pink frock with bronzed skin and pale pink lippy, while Elle Macpherson and Michelle Keegan kept it clean with their minimal make up looks.
Showing off that bright red lippy was Fearne Cotton who went for a vintage feel, while Lydia Bright teamed up hers with vampish eyes.
See the gallery below for our top five beauty trends of the night.

Metallics are no strangers to the fashion world, often making an appearance on clothing, in hair and of course eye make-up and next season they make more than just a cameo.
For Spring/Summer 2012 this trend has a leading role in the eye make-up show. However, unlike this season where metallics were dark and bold, next season is all about pale shimmery hues.
Copy the look seen on the Chanel, Ralph Lauren and Gucci catwalks and go for an almost white metallic eyeshadow to make your eyes stand out.
To combine this, and the smokey trend gently brush lower lids with this hue, but not too much- this trend is all about softness.
See the gallery below for our top five designer looks.

Yesterday it was all about the fab frocks at the Golden Globe awards, but today we’ve decided to focus on something equally important and that’s of course hair and make-up.
Trending at this year’s awards was the bronzed face and smokey eyed look channelled by Reese Witherspoon – who completed the look with luscious waves- and Lea Michelle who decided to finish the look with an up-do.
Also following this trend was Nicole Richie who bought the look bang into this season with a high ponytail. However, there were other trends also spotted when it came to beauty.
Angelina Jolie and Claire Danes emulated classic Hollywood chic with pale foundation and statement red lips, while Zooey Deschanel went all 60s with a blunt fringe and heavy eyeliner.
See all the Golden Globe 2012 beauty in the gallery below.

Kylie Minogue tries to go make-up free as often as possible.
The singer says it’s important to have a break from wearing cosmetics as it allows the skin to breath, although she admits it’s not always easy.
She said: “I often go without make-up, but these days it does depend on the paparazzi situation. They used to use camera film and weren’t so in-your-face, but now it’s just all high-definition and sometimes you just know it isn’t going to be good. My secret is a top knot and sunnies!”
Kylie says she tries to stay true to her own style and not be influenced by trends.
She told Britain’s more! magazine: “When I think of timeless style icons like Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn, I wonder how they would have coped with the pressure of today’s world, where very few months there’s a different trend. Somebody like Sarah Jessica Parker really inspires me. She’s a modern fashion icon.”

Dita Von Teese thinks her look will “work at any age”.
The 39-year-old burlesque model explained she had an “epiphany” at a recent shoot, and discovered she can still maintain her “classy” style when she gets older, as her hair, make-up and clothing choices have become like a “uniform” to her.
She said: “I was doing a photo shoot and the make-up artist had made me up to have grey hair but I was still wearing the same clothes and had the same make-up. I was scanning me in the mirror and I just had this epiphany that I was perfect – I looked like a classy, old lady.
“I won’t have to change my look when I get older, it’ll work at any age. I’m not sure what Paris Hilton will be wearing when she gets to 70.
“My look is like a uniform to me, I know each morning what I’ll be doing with my make-up and hair, how long my hem line will be. I like to evolve my look, but I don’t feel compelled to update it.”
However, the raven-haired beauty – who has appeared in campaigns for the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood in the past – admitted she isn’t naturally blessed with a trim figure and “works hard” to look so glamorous.
Dita added in an interview with Vogue.co.uk: “I don’t try to tell people I’m naturally anything, I’m not going to tell you that I eat pizza all day and look like this – I don’t.
“I work hard to maintain a glamorous look, and to tell women that they can achieve it too. We all want to have a plump, juicy and luscious figures – I just try hard to stay fit.”

Emma Watson has become more “experimental” with make-up since cutting her hair.
The ‘Harry Potter actress chopped off her long locks last year and says it has made her become more bolder with her cosmetics choices as her face is now every exposed.
She told Stylelist: “I’m more experimental make-up. There’s no way to hide when you have short hair. You really have to go for it.”
Emma, 21, also says once she finds a product that suits her, she will stick with it.
She said: “I’m a creature of habit. I like to find what works and keep buying it. I like a bronzer or blush because I am so pale and English.”
Emma – who is the face of Lancome – also says she likes to highlight her eyes by wearing Lancome’s Hypnose Doll mascara.
She explained: “I’m big into Twiggy so I do bottom lashes and top lashes. This is really cool because it is specifically designed to get that look.”
Emma recently revealed she worries about her looks but is determined not to conform to Hollywood’s ideal appearance.
She said: “I do worry about the expectation to look a certain way. I find LA quite scary because of that – all those young people having plastic surgery. But the thing is, I don’t want to look like everyone else.
“I don’t have perfect teeth, I’m not stick thin. I want to be the person who feels great in her body and can say that she loves it and doesn’t want to change anything.”

Lady Gaga likes her boyfriend to dress up as a vampire in the bedroom.
The You and I hitmaker gets “turned on” by the blood-sucking creatures and has a pair of fangs she makes ‘Vampire Diaries’ actor Taylor Kinney wear when the couple are getting down and dirty.
An insider told The Sun newspaper: “Gaga gets very turned on by vampires and loves being bitten by her partner. She likes to dress up and has a set of fangs which she’ll often get out in the bedroom.
“She calls herself the ‘Kinky Queen’ and has an entire wardrobe of sexy dress up clothes for her sex sessions.”
However, it’s likely Taylor had to wait some time before indulging in bedroom antics with the 25-year-old singer – real name Stefani Germanotta – as she has revealed she likes to make her boyfriends wait for sex and would never “put out” too soon.
Gaga recently said: “It’s always been important to me, as it’s for my generation, a most relevant consideration when you’re growing up. Sex doesn’t mean nothing; sex means so much.
“I hope that young women know that sex is still a big deal, and they don’t have to put out soon. If they want someone to court them for a while before they give it up, that’s wonderful and beautiful, and a man will only respect you more for honouring your body. I am that way.”
