Bow-tie blouses for a chic scarf alternative

By Andrea Thatcher on October 5th, 2007

With the retro looks for fall upon us, romantic ruffles and feminine touches abound in dresses and shirts. The bow-tie blouse offers a fresh alternative to scarves and turtlenecks of the season, featuring a built-in accessory for a twist on the classic button-up. This year calls for a range of sheer and 3/4-sleeve styles, mixed up with multi-button closures, buttoned sleeves, and even miniscule polka dots for a little fun. What’s nice about these light shirts is the freedom to layer with a tank or camisole underneath as temperatures drop, as well as an easy pick for the season’s high-waisted skirts, pants, and jeans. The high-waisted look requires an attention-grabbing top, and the bow-tie blouse is a perfect match to pull off the look in style. This Marc by Marc Jacobs Nora print twill top ($228) is just one example of a clean and classic look with the addition of ruffles and tie at the neck. With puffy short sleeves and a semi-sheer fabric, it’s a great transition into fall for day or night.

Model citizen: Iekeliene Stange

By Andrea Thatcher on October 1st, 2007

Iekeliene%20Stange_edited.jpg
Looking like a mixture of otherworldly alien and parody of a model, with her sharp cheekbones and broom-thin body, Iekeliene Stange (pronounced Ee-kel-een-ah) has quickly become a member of the new batch of top models. A favorite of big names in the fashion industry, photographer Steven Meisel picked her for a Vogue Italia shoot and Marc Jacobs had her open his spring 2006 show, where she removed her Lucite heels half-way down the runway. Calling Snow White and Japan’s Harajuku girls personal style icons, Stange’s outfits backstage are sometimes more impressive than her outfits on stage. She regularly shows up to events wearing lens-free glasses and dresses usually only suitable for four-year-olds or cartoon characters.

Taste of Paris with a Marc Jacobs Trompe L’oeil dress

By Andrea Thatcher on September 25th, 2007

If plans for Paris travels aren’t on the schedule for this year, decking yourself out in Parisian colors can be just as satisfying. Marc Jacobs seems to have a taste of European refinement on his mind this season, offering a fresh lineup of exaggerated silhouettes and streamlined dresses and coats. The Trompe L’oiel dress is a smashing contrast of red and navy, a clean-cut number with an illusion of a waistcoat sewn on the front.

Fashion Week roundup

By Andrea Thatcher on September 14th, 2007

Spring and summer ’08 look to be wonderful seasons for fashion, with plenty of styles to choose from. Half the designers went with more muted colors–gray, white, black, and beige–and longer hemlines, while the other half went for a more bright, colorful look ranging from bright yellow to red to green to blue and shorter hemlines. But overall, the trend for spring is waist-defining dresses with light, flowing skirts, and lots of belts–from skinny to wide. Not to mention hats! I love that hats are back–from floppy wide brims to porter hats to straw hats. Take a look at the summary of some of our favorite designers’ shows and more pictures from their shows, after the jump.

Marc Jacobs considers leaving New York Fashion Week

By Andrea Thatcher on September 13th, 2007

According to WWD Marc Jacobs is pretty perturbed about the rumors going around about him having drinks at the Mercer hotel Monday night while everyone was waiting for two hours for his show to start. “Marc and I were up from Friday until Monday,” said Robert Duffy, Marc Jacobs’ business partner. “Marc wasn’t drinking, he wasn’t doing drugs, he wasn’t at the Mercer Hotel having a cocktail while everybody was at the show waiting. He was with me backstage.” After all the upset, Jacobs is seriously considering taking his show to London or Paris, instead. “I don’t really feel a part of the American fashion community,” he said. “I really feel like an outsider, I think we all do, and we feel unloved here, so we want to go somewhere else.” All I have to say is: please don’t leave us, Marc–we love you!

Puffy handbags are in

By Elaine LaPersonerie on September 7th, 2007

Texture is in this fall and, if you’ve noticed, there seems to be a lot of puff. From Chanel to Miu Miu to Louis Vitton to Cynthia Rowley, everyone seems to be into this quilted look. Net-A-Porter is showing this black leather Marc Jacobs Mayfair shoulder bag with gold hardware and a chunky chain link strap. I think it’s really classy, but for $895 I’m not sure it’s worth it. But with some quick internet surfing I found a similar bag at Fashion Flaire for $49.99. It’s not leather, but so what–it’s so hard to notice the faux half the time, anyway! Plus with the number of bag peddlers on NYC streets, everyone in the world is carrying a faux something! So, if you can’t swing for the pricier styles–look for something similar before you break the bank.

Fall ’07 is all about the proper woman in hats and gloves

By Andrea Thatcher on September 5th, 2007

marc%20jacobs.jpgOn fall runways from Marc Jacobs to Proenza Schouler, long gone were the little-girl looks and grungy street wear of past seasons, instead, this fall, women are women. Or really, women are women from the 1920s to 1940s–in hats and gloves, with defined waists. There was Gatsby-esque cloche hats at Proenza Schouler and Marc Jacobs, and bucket styles at MaxAzria and Abaeté. Gloves ranged in length from wrist to elbow, some even fingerless, in a variety of colors…

Marc Jacobs fall 2007 gives us wide hats and sleek coats

By Andrea Thatcher on August 31st, 2007

When Marc Jacobs sent his models down the fall runway, gone were the billowy fabrics and layers of his past collections. Instead, Jacobs introduced us to sophisticated women’s wear. Long coats with stiff shoulders, loose trousers, and wide-brimmed hats were inspired by 1970s menswear for women and pants-wearing 1930s screen siren Katherine Hepburn. To copy the look for less, continue reading after the jump.

Rubber Rainboots AKA Life Savers—Wellington, Target, Marc Jacobs, J.Crew

By Elaine LaPersonerie on August 28th, 2007

collagepile_edited2.JPG

When the rubber rainboot trend first hit the streets, I was a bit skeptical. Mostly because a lot of stores were carrying styles that put me back to grade school. Clouds, rainbows, and pink boots with a kitty-cat face at the toes—I could go on and on. Eventually though, I got sick of dodging puddles in heels, (not to mention I ruined some serious shoes) so, I bought a pair of Marc Jacob All Weather Boots. They were rubber, olive green, up to my knees and Lord have mercy they saved my life! No more drenched jeans, wet feet or ruining great shoes. It really made sense why people loved rubber boots. Coincidently, the NY Times did a little slide show this week of New Yorkers battling recent rainy weather. And guess what the focus was? Rainboots!
