Style spotlight: Sarah Jessica Parker

By emilyborrett on September 1st, 2011

At the after party for Sex and The City 2's premiere, SJP looked sexy and seventies in a peacock-blue maxi

Many well-dressed celebrities come and go without us particularly noticing, but we do certainly have at least one true style icon for our generation: Sarah Jessica Parker (or Carrie Bradshaw if you refuse to believe the Sex and the City character isn’t actually a real person).

I don’t know about you, but the character of Carrie Bradshaw has been there for me in the good times and the bad with her oversized corsages and couture McQueen. And SJP is just as chic and stylish in real life as she is on the screen. Her trademark wavy hair, smoky eye make-up, diminutive frame and penchant for Vivienne Westwood have made her one of the red carpet’s most-loved celebs – it’s no wonder her wardrobe is so full of couture. If we were Lagerfeld we’d give her everything we’d ever designed.

We’ve noticed that the star has a bit of a thing for vintage-look maxi dresses recently. Maybe it’s her passion for Halston Heritage or just that the look is in this season, but SJP definitely has got a flair for working the high-glamour, Jerry Hall 1970s look. We’re pretty much obsessed with the outfit she rocked for Cannes this May: a purple high-necked maxi dress with a train, and a lace neckline. J’adore.

Check out the gallery for our favourite Sarah Jessica Parker looks.

Marchesa is set to design model Petra Nemcova’s wedding dress

By emilyborrett on August 8th, 2011

Petra has a great relationship with Marchesa and often wears their creations to events

Another day, another impossibly glamorous celebrity wedding to get excited about as the sumptuously decadent fashion house Marchesa has been named as the designer who will be in charge of designing Petra Nemcova’s wedding dress.

The model is marrying the actor Jamie Belman next summer and thinks it is “nice” to have a wedding dress by a British designer – she already has a great relationship with Marchesa, having worked with them for years.

Petra opened up to the Daily Telegraph about her big wedding plans. “There are some things set in stone. The date, June 2012, is set, and it will be in England – because we both love England – and it will be in the countryside. And the dress will be designed by Marchesa. The relationship with Marchesa for me has been for many, many years, since they started, and it’s nice to be able to wear them on that special day. We still have one year to prepare so we are working on the other details.”

We absolutely can’t wait to see Petra’s dress – Marchesa has long been one of our absolutely favourite British labels for ages.

Marchesa to resurrect the traditional Playboy bunny costume for new London club launch

By emilyborrett on April 21st, 2011

Marchesa's sketch for their planned revamp of the legendary "Bunny Girl" costume

An unlikely marriage of two worlds is about to happen as luxury fashion house Marchesa, home to a million frills and jewels fit for a fashion princess, reveals their sketch of a one-off design of the iconic 70′s playboy bunny costume in honour of the new opening of a Playboy Club in London.

Designers Georgia Chapman and and Keren Craig are reinventing the classic bunny-girl one piece, but not as we know it – expect ruffles, jewels and (we hope) a solid-gold tail. (As I said – we hope.)

Georgia Chapman said of the label’s design for the Playboy franchise, “We’ve taken our inspiration from the original costume but added Marchesa’s signature details, such as hand draping and embroidery, while staying true to the Playboy Bunny’s classic corset silhouette. The result is a modern, yet feminine interpretation of this legendary look.”

Playboy was a suave gentleman’s lifestyle magazine back in the day (with some pretty nude bunnies thrown in for good measure) but in recent years the whole thing has become a bit, well, seedy. Can a magical sprinkling of fashion dust change the face of Playboy again? Forget the cheap pink satin and white fluffy mules of yesteryear – Hef’s girls are about to get a luxury makeover. We’re a little bit jealous, actually.

Golden Globes 2011: Olivia Wilde wears Marchesa

By Andrea Petrou on January 16th, 2011

The  Golden Globe red carpet fashion has already begun.

Olivia Wilde was our first celebrity spot and set the scene for the night in a gorgeous Marchesa strapless chocolate brown beaded net frock.

However, we were a little bit disappointed to hear her tell E! presenter that she didn’t really eat.

We hope she was joking and that gorgeous figure is down to healthy food and exercise.

NYFW highlights: Kelly Brook and Kelly Osbourne at the Marchesa party

By Andrea Petrou on September 16th, 2010

Kelly Osbourne has been a busy lady this week, showing her her face at a range of New York Fashion Week  events.

She made the front row at Jeremy Scott’s catwalk show and she also turned up to the Marchesa party, dressed in a ruffled dress, which looked very much like a Marchesa design, teamed up with peep toe shoes.

Red and ruffles were pick of the day for Kelly Brook who turned up in a short one shoulder satin frock, and Olivia Palermo who opted for this colour in a shift frock with detailed sleeves.

Molly Sims went for a cute white dress, teamed up with peep toe boots, while Natasha Bendigfield went for a sheer black frock for her night out.

New York Fashion Week: Marchesa Fall 09 Gallery

By Kimberley Foster on February 19th, 2009

For lots of pretty, floaty, fabulous frocks it is imperative that you swing by the Marchesa show during New York Fashion Week. Sticking two fingers to the economy was co-designer Georgina Chapman, who didn’t disappoint in offering up an array of delicate whimsical creations for eveningwear. Fairytale-inspired red carpet gowns were aplenty in layered tulle and draped Grecian-style jersey. These filtered out into ruffled candy cocktail dresses and sparkly black and red minidresses, all tied up in a satin bow. As always it is a true pleasure to watch the fruits of Marchesa’s labor, and take a moment to escape the realities of life. And with Sir Philip Green lurking around the room, one can’t but help wonder whether we might see a Marchesa/Topshop collaboration in the future.

New York Fashion Week: The Heart Truth’s Red Dress Collection Fall 2009

By Andrea Thatcher on February 13th, 2009

The Heart Truth once again kicked off the official Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week schedule in New York’s Bryant Park this morning. The usual smattering of A-to-C listers paraded down the runway in red dresses by various designers, though Michelle Obama did not follow in Laura Bush’s footsteps as many had hoped she would.

My favorite was Carmen Marc Valvo’s dress, too bad Katie Couric puts on such an annoying show of “OMG, like I can’t believe I’m DOING THIS! I’m a serious journalist!” Yeah, right. Joining Ms. Couric were Jenni Garth in Badgley Mischka, Brittany Snow in Marchesa and Tori Spelling in Betsey Johnson, among others.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2009: Marchesa

Messiahs of the red carpet gown, Marchesa, presented their spring/summer ’09 collection not on the catwalk but at an installation this week. As some have put it, it seems a shame not to see these pieces of artwork float about on the runway, but still, they are more than worth the pause in an otherwise too-hectic-for-words fashion week schedule.

Philip Bloch hosts exclusive Marchesa fashion show

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 17th, 2008

Philip_Bloch_Headshot_1[1].jpg

By exclusive they mean that you have to pay to get in. But we’ll debate their definition of exclusive another day since the event is being held for charity – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Design Cares is presenting the event called A Night of A Thousand Lights. In addition to the live Marchesa runway show, the evening will include restaurant, wine and spirits tastings, a silent auction, music and dancing.

It’s all going down April 23 at 7 p.m. at the Roseland Ballroom. It would certainly be a ritzy, tax-deductable evening for any fashion fan. Stylist Philip Bloch will be on hand, which is sort of ironic considering how uncharitable some of his fashion commentary is.

Oscar trend report: strapless

By Andrea Thatcher on February 25th, 2008

Since we kind of burned out on the Oscar blogging last night, our UK team has been providing some trend reports today on what were the most popular styles on the red carpet. Up now? Strapless and fabulous.

Renee Zellweger wore a silver Carolina Herrera gown, embellished with sparkles it really shone on the red carpet, requiring minimal jewellery.

Heidi Klum, Helen Mirren, Anne Hathaway, and Katherine Heigl don red for the Oscars

By Andrea Thatcher on February 24th, 2008

red%20dresses.jpgClick image to enlarge.

Red was definitely the stand-out color on the red carpet, and the dresses were so different that each of the ladies really stood out as well.

Heidi Klum was one of the first out of the gate in a dramatic Galliano gown. Maybe either the collar or the big train would have been enough, both together seem a little bit much. But Heidi carries it off regally.
