Asos Marketplace highlight: Poppy Valentine

We’re massive fans of the relatively new Asos Marketplace here at ShinyStyle, where young independent fashion and jewellery designers can have a platform to showcase and sell their work. Today it’s pin-curls and court heels at the ready for Poppy Valentine, the vintage-inspired independent label we’ve just discovered that specialises in 40s and 50s designs.

The high street is brilliant for vintage-style pieces, but sometimes you just can’t beat a handmade piece made from genuine vintage fabrics where a lot of love and care has gone into the garment – and that’s what Poppy Valentine is all about.

Our personal favourite design from the collection is their 40s-style wrap dress, which comes in a variety of different prints and isn’t completely unlike the kind of thing Miu Miu has been making lately. They’re completely elegant and perfect for channelling your inner Dita Von Teese with some coiffed hair and red lipstick.

Check out the gallery above to see Poppy Valentine’s designs – just one of many good reasons why you should give Asos Marketplace a go.

ShinyStyle loves: Vintage-style swimwear for the beach

Cupped Bandeau Spot Bikini

As we continue to gratefully bask in this amazing Spanish weather that’s sweeping over Britain, ShinyStyle’s thoughts have turned to swimwear. Something so simple, but so easy to get wrong; as I type I have about ten different bikinis lying forlornly unworn in my knicker drawer, that have been bought on the internet on a whim and then never worn.

But this spring, all the trends are working in swimwear’s favour – florals, fruit and bold digital prints are the things to be seen wearing, and we have high hopes for swimwear on the high street this year. Will 2011 be the year that Britain (especially me) finally gets it right?

Our mantra for this summer, we’ve decided, is going to be “flirtation and glamour”. With designers referencing the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Diana Dors and Jane Fonda at the moment in their collections, now is the time to discover your inner sex kitten. Our favourite place for beach-siren swimwear is Urban Outfitters – they have a gorgeous selection of Marilyn Monroe-esque bikinis and one pieces, which we guarantee will make heads turn.

Our other favourite shop for pin-up swimwear is the excellent What Katie Did, who have an expertise in tailoring their bikinis and underwear to create the illusion of a perfect film-star hourglass silhouette. So even if you don’t think you’ve got it, you can flaunt it. Be prepared to pay a little more for their designs, but you’ll get beautiful contour tailoring for your money and a well-made piece that will last forever.

Our number one pick? The cool plaid bikini from Urban Outfitters – we think the grungy tartan print gives an otherwise retro style a cool and modern edge. Check it out along with our other star buys in the gallery above.

Kristen Stewart gets all dolled up, but what do you think of her look?

By Andrea Petrou on May 21st, 2010

We’ve had a little bit of a dig at Kristen Stewart in the past. Not because of her style but because she always looks so darn miserable. However her natural, sassy and slightly grungy look is really what makes her stand out from the other cutesy smiling celebs.

So you can imagine how surprised we were when we spotted these pictures of the Twilight star, which were taken for Slovakian magazine Eva.

The actress has been completely transformed into a typical looking cover-girl complete with a fake Marilyn Monroe beauty spot and lots of airbrushing.

Frankly we’re quite disappointed in these shots, which totally strip Kristen of her original style and we really hope this look doesn’t stick. View our mini gallery of the photos for Eva and our pick of Kristen in more natural surroundings and tell us which look you prefer by voting below.

ShinyStyle watch: Scarlett Johansson for D&G make-up

By Andrea Petrou on April 30th, 2010

Scarlett make up D&G.jpg
It was only yesterday that we featured Scarlett Johansson in our models versus celebrity face-off after some designers said they would go back to using models over A-List stars in their campaigns.

However, we think perhaps we were a little bit too hasty to agree because Scarlett looks amazing in this latest campaign for Dolce & Gabbana Makeup campaign.

The star looks every inch the 50s chick with her Marilyn Monroe curls and we love the blue metallic shade she wears on her eyes. And she’s proved she’s most definitely a muse for the brand. D&G have named a colour in their Roses Lipstick collection Scarlett.

She said of the campaign: “I try to be inspired by old Hollywood glamour, whether that’s Rita Hayworth or Lauren Bacall.”
Watch behind the scenes footage and see what else Scarlett has to say about the campaign by viewing the video below.

First looks: Lindsay Lohan’s new designs for her 6126 range

By Andrea Petrou on April 9th, 2010

One actress, come designer, who has not been as successful as the Olsen Twins in her foray into fashion is Lindsay Lohan, whose collection for Ungaro two seasons ago bombed.

However she’s not giving up. Earlier this week we told you that LiLo was planning on extending her 6126 line from leggings to handbags and tops, and we’ve managed to get hold of some pictures from the lookbook, which also seems to include minidresses and leather vests.

According to NY Mag the lookbook’s intro, which tells of Lindsay’s inspiration, reads: “The iconic Marilyn Monroe and the timeless, confident glamour she represents.”

Hmmm we’re not sure about this but we want to know what you think of the first shots of the collection? Are they great or are they grim?

Let us know by leaving your comments below.

Lindsay Lohan’s Marilyn-esque Vogue España shoot, August ’09 issue

By Kimberley Foster on July 17th, 2009

Check out Lindsay Lohan’s latest cover for Vogue España‘s August issue. The actress has surprised many, myself included, when she decided to don a Marilyn Monroe platinum wig again to channel the screen icon for the glossy shoot. After her previous disaster, when she recreated Monroe’s “The Last Sitting” for NY Magazine, you can’t help but wonder why?

No doubt she’ll cop even more flack for this latest effort, although having now seen the finished results I’m not quite so dark on her. For example, the image (above, right) where she is dressed in Thierry Mugler is actually quite fierce. Almost Gaga-inspired.

YouTube Watch: Walk the Catwalk promotes size diversity in the fashion industry

By Andrea Thatcher on October 1st, 2007

Walk%20the%20Catwalk.JPG
Check out this inspiring video on YouTube from Walk the Catwalk. It sends a great message to the fashion industry and consumers about how we view voluptuous women. The average size in the U.S. is a 14, which is what knock-out Marilyn Monroe and other famous models wore. And honestly, I don’t know a single man who wants a stick-thin girl with absolutely no ‘meat’ on her. So, why are women standing for this so-called ‘fashionable’ look, that only an extremely small percentage of women can even achieve?

Houndstooth dress from Banana Republic

By Elaine LaPersonerie on September 19th, 2007

Last night I suffered a bit of a fashion emergency. I had to run uptown to an engagement party and just figured I’d surely have something to wear. Yeah, well I didn’t. Or at least nothing that was working for me. So, I went for the quickest and closest solution: Banana Republic. I prayed all the way there they would have something fun, a little dressy and not tack another huge charge on to my credit card. And surprise!! I found this brown and beige knit jersey houndstooth dress for $138. Not bad, right? With the gathered sleeves and sexy neckline I really felt feminine and a bit Marilyn Monroe-ish. The straight pencil skirt is very trendy and paired with a brown pump, I was out the door! This dress has now made an easy, affordable home in my closet.
