Mario Testino pushed for Gisele Bundchen to have a modelling career

By Andrea Petrou on October 6th, 2011

Mario Testino “fought” for Gisele Bundchen.

The legendary photographer says he saw something special in the Brazilian supermodel as soon as he met her when she was a rising star even though others didn’t.

He told Grazia magazine: “When I started, Bruce Weber was the big star photographer, so all the models were the ones he liked; sporty and outdoorsy. I couldn’t find anyone, so I would go to the street looking for people who suited my aesthetic. When I met Gisele in New York, I liked her immediately. No one was using her. I fought for her.”

Although Mario, 56, is one of the world’s most sought-after snappers, he still worries it could all be taken away from him.

He said: “It wasn’t until this September that I felt I had finally arrived. I had six covers and 180 pages of editorial. For once, I felt I was accepted everywhere.

“But I still worry that nobody will call me for the next job.”

Kate Winslet couldn’t refuse posing naked for “magician” Mario Testino.

By Andrea Petrou on June 1st, 2011

Kate Winslet couldn’t refuse posing naked for “magician” Mario Testino.

The ‘Revolutionary Road’ actress paid tribute to the legendary fashion photographer’s ability to present women in the nude for shoots, and his ability to make them feel at ease with their bodies.

Presenting the photographer with a Lifetime Achievement award at the El Museo del Barrio gala in New York last week, Kate said: “You know that his biggest strength without fail is making women look beautiful. When Mario turns to you and says, ‘It’s beautiful, but I think it would work better naked, no?’ How can one refuse?

“No matter what insecurities about oneself a subject may have, Mario makes them go away like a magician.

“One moment you are in the hair and makeup chair fully clothed and wishing you had smoother skin, longer legs and smaller feet and then Mario comes in and in that charming way he takes you by the? hand and says, ‘Don’t worry it’s going to be amazing.’”

The photographer – who, in addition to his celebrity work, was behind the lens to take the official engagement photos of Britain’s Prince William and Kate Middleton – said he has built up a certain level of trust in his industry which he believes makes it easier for him to convince people to pose au naturel.

According to People.com, he said: “I said to [Kate], I want you to pose nude for this exhibition. And she was like, ‘Oh, OK, Mario.

“She said yes right away. Most of them, I think, trust me. I would never let them down.”

Kate Moss hires Testino for wedding pictures

By Andrea Petrou on May 31st, 2011

Kate Moss has hired Mario Testino to be her official wedding photographer.

The 37-year-old supermodel is set to tie the knot with Kills rocker Jamie Hince on July 2 and has asked the acclaimed fashion photographer – who she has worked with for almost 20 years, most recently for a near-naked photoshoot for Brazil’s Vogue magazine – to take pictures at the ceremony and reception.

Mario – who took the official engagement portraits of Prince William and his now-wife Princess Catherine – told iPad newspaper The Daily he wants to “capture the happiness that Kate is going through at the moment.”

Among the moments the photographer could be capturing at the wedding reception is a spectacular performance from legendary singer Dame Shirley Bassey after Kate asked her friend if she would provide the entertainment for guests at the reception.

A source said recently: “Kate wanted high-end glamour and good old-fashioned entertainment, and Dame Shirley was the perfect choice. She agreed to play the gig immediately and Kate can’t wait for the big day. It will be a real highlight.”

It was recently claimed that Kate – who has an eight-year-old daughter, Lila Grace, with ex-boyfriend Jefferson Hack – is planning to turn her wedding into a “small festival”, with the celebrations set to continue for several days.

A source said: “Kate wants it to be a party to remember and like a small festival.

“She doesn’t want her guests to leave for days so she’s making sure there is plenty of food and entertainment. It’s a no-expense spared do – thought most of her budget will probably go on alcohol.”

She’s been signed up as the face of Louis Vuitton and now we’ve come across this gorgeous fashion shoot she’s done for the December edition of UK Vogue.

Shot by Mario Testino, Lara wears a range of satin, silk and feathered ball gowns with fitted bodices, which we think really brings home what Christmas party outfits are all about.

We can’t wait to get hold of a copy, but here’s a few of the pictures to keep you going until then.

The Harry Potter star has made her modelling debut for the label’s autumn/winter 2009-10 campaign alongside four very handsome young men.

“Having known and admired the lovely Emma Watson for quite some time, she was the obvious choice for this campaign,” said creative director, Christopher Bailey. “I felt [she] would be strong enough to hold the campaign as the only girl, and I loved the idea of her being surrounded by these young, cool British guys.”

Beyonce does her thing for Vogue’s April ’09 issue

By Kimberley Foster on March 16th, 2009

Representing the “Shape issue” is Beyonce, who has been photographed by Mario Testino for the April ’09 cover of Vogue. It’s the second time this year that Anna Wintour has chosen a black woman for the cover (Michelle Obama was the first for the March ’09 issue). With the headline “Real women have curves, Beyonce at her best”, it’s great to see the 27-year-old land the cover, but might I casually remind Ms Wintour that real women come in all wonderful shapes, and not solely of the curvy variety.

Lily Donaldson, Eden Clarke & co. star in Burberry’s blooming spring 09 campaign

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on December 10th, 2008

burberry_springsummer08campaign.jpg

Catwalk Queen‘s Kimberley Foster writes…

Burberry has long been about doing things in big electic groups, consisting of a mixture of models, musicians, and other various It-kids.This spring/summer looks no different, with Christopher Bailey luring his cast to Petersham Nurseries, outside of London, for a greenhouse-style shoot. As far as who stars, well it appears that the whispers were correct for once. There is no sign of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley this time, after she was reportedly dropped from the label due to that drug scandal a few months back. Oops!

To discover who has taken her place, read on…

Keira Knightley behind-the-scenes for US ‘Vogue’

By kelly on August 21st, 2008

Love or hate the September ’08 cover of U.S. Vogue, you will still want to watch this behind-the-scenes look at Keira Knightley‘s shoot with Mario Testino in Berlin (if only to restore your faith in Mario and Keira, that they can, in fact, take a good photo between them!) It’s also interesting to hear Keira talk about getting “into character” and coming up with a “scenario in her head” before she shoots a photo. Watch to find out who she’s channeling in her September Vogue editorial…

Keira Knightley’s September ’08 cover for Vogue U.S. – revealed!

By Kimberley Foster on August 11th, 2008

Following dwindling sales in April and May, the pressure riding on the September ’08 issue of American Vogue has been fairly high. As previously reported, Anna Wintour chose Keira Knightley for the cover, which has been shot by Mario Testino. So far, public reaction to the cover hasn’t been favourable. Fashion fans don’t seem to be warming to the British actress and her messy hair, and not even her Balenciaga outfit is winning her much praise. This, coupled with the fact that the issue has slimmed down from 725 pages, from the same time last year, to 674 pages due to a drop in ad sales, and things don’t seem to be sitting too pretty right now for Wintour and co.

Can Mario Testino’s September ’08 issue save Vogue from a sales slump?

By Kimberley Foster on July 8th, 2008

Mario Testino’s three-week diary for The Independent has revealed that yes, those photos of him and Keira Knightley taking happy snaps in Berlin, will form the September ’08 cover of Vogue US.

mariotestino_sepcovervogue.jpg

Now that we know this, we can’t help but wonder whether the pressure is now on Testino and co. to get this next cover right after it was reported that Vogue’s April and May issues suffered poor sales. Just 350,000 copies were sold of that controversial April issue featuring Gisele Bundchen and NBA star LeBron James, a la King-Kong style, making it the worst selling April issue since 2001.

Versace’s McDreamy new spokesman: Patrick Dempsey will front S/S campaign

By Andrea Thatcher on December 5th, 2007

Patrick%20Dempsey.jpg

If the writer’s strike continues and we have no more Grey’s to keep us warm during cold winter nights, we can at least stare at pictures of a Versace-clad Patrick Dempsey soon. The star of Enchanted, a screening of which he is pictured at, left, has signed on as the new face of the Italian fashion house.

“Patrick represents everything that is great about this collection — he has that confidence, he is completely comfortable in his own skin, which is so attractive. He is the modern man of today and of course looks fantastic in the clothes,” said Donatella Versace.

The campaign was shot by Mario Testino last month and will begin print circulation in February next year.
