Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have created a luxury handbag collection under their fashion label The Row.

By Andrea Petrou on July 14th, 2011

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have created a luxury handbag collection under their fashion label The Row.

The 25-year-old twins will launch a nine-bag line including a day tote, backpack, doctor bag and shoulder bag made from python and alligator in Barneys department store, New York in August.

The siblings don’t rely on a specific era for inspiration with Ashley revealing she is influenced by different times while Mary-Kate struggles with ever repeating trends.

Ashley said: “There are important style contributions from almost every era. Drawing on the right references at the right time is the key.”

Mary-Kate added: “My problem is not with the trends themselves but the fact that trends are constantly repeating themselves.”

Averyl Oates, buying director for Harvey Nichols, who stock The Row, recently claimed the success of the label is due to its “timeless generational appeal”.

She explained: “The label carries timeless generational appeal while still remaining directional.

“Mary-Kate and Ashley recently achieved their ambition of dressing Michelle Obama. Lauren Hutton has also worked with the brand and I think the ageless appeal lies with the fact that the collection has a crystal-clear DNA.”

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen deliberately distance themselves from celebrity brands.

By Andrea Petrou on May 31st, 2011

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen deliberately distance themselves from celebrity brands.

The twins – who rose to fame as young children appearing in TV and film stars – have not used their faces or names to promote their fashion brand, The Row as they don’t want it to be labelled a celebrity clothing line.

Mary-Kate said: “We were aware of [the growing trend of] celebrity brands. We were trying to get away from that because we’d already done it with Wal-Mart, and we did it well. We’d been there, we’d done that.”

Ashley, 24, was also adamant about moving the focus away from her and her sister with The Row, so that the focus would solely be on the work they produce.

She added to WWD.com: “I was looking at it as I’m switching careers. I’m no longer going by my face. Who knows what I’ll do in the future, if I act again or if I don’t? My point at the moment was, I’m literally disappearing.

“I’m not going to be in front of the camera. I want to do something created with my hands and with my thoughts. It wasn’t about being a face. It was about being able to create something.”

Mary-Kate has not ruled out ever returning to acting however, saying: “Right now we don’t have the time. I was thinking about this recently. We don’t use that form of expression anymore. But it’s still ingrained in us.”

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s fashion label The Row is successful because it is “timeless and directional”.

By Andrea Petrou on May 18th, 2011

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s fashion label The Row is successful because it is “timeless and directional”.

The 24-year-old twins – who have recently been nominated for Best Newcomer at the forthcoming CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) awards – have seen their upmarket range go from strength to strength since its launch, which Averyl Oates, buying director for Harvey Nichols, who stock the range, believes is due to its enduring appeal.

She said: “The label carries timeless generational appeal while still remaining directional.

“Mary-Kate and Ashley recently achieved their ambition of dressing Michelle Obama. Lauren Hutton has also modelled for the brand and I think the ageless appeal lies with the fact that the collection has a crystal-clear DNA.”

Mary-Kate and Ashley – who had a clothing range in Walmart at the age of 10 and launched their first own label, Elizabeth and James, in 2007 – have also done well with The Row because they knew how the fashion industry worked.

Averyl added: “We exclusively launched The Row with a dinner for the Olsens back in 2007. Even though it was a new brand, it was an immediate hit. And even then, the girls were not new to the commercial aspect of business.”

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen launch sunglasses range for spring 2010

By Andrea Petrou on October 14th, 2009

mary-kate-and-ashley-olsen.jpgAfter Lindsay Lohan’s tragic fashion design debut, we should be wary of child actresses who have expanded into the fashion world.

However there is one team of successful actresses showing Lindsay how it should be done and that’s Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen.

The twins, who found fame on various sitcoms when they were young, have built up the Row, a successful fashion line, which includes shoes, accessories and a variety of clothes that we would be proud to be seen in.

They have now announced they are expanding their range into sunglasses.

They have teamed up with luxury eyewear maker Linda Farrow (other collaborations include Dries Van Noten and Sofia Kokosalaki) to create a range of sunnies that will be out for spring 2010.

The styles are said to be classy, chic and more John Lennon than Jackie O. We’re not sure we can wait until next summer to wear them.

Elizabeth & James Steve Madden collaboration.jpg

It looks like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are continueing the expansion of their Elizabeth and James line.

After doing a line of jewelry with Robert Lee Morris, the twins are now teaming up with Steve Madden on Elizabeth and James shoes.

The question our friends at Fashionista are asking is will they be affordable shoes a la Madden’s usual sold alongside $700 dresses, or will we be seeing the advent of $500 Steve Madden pumps?

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on May 5th, 2008

We have a feeling Christian Louboutin actually had more than two girls – in terms of who was wearing his footwear. But in terms of dates he graced the red carpet at the Met Costume Institute Gala with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

The girls were the guests of Diane von Furstenberg who created custom gowns for Hollywood’s first twins.

PETA’s Trollsen twins mock the Olsen twins

By Andrea Thatcher on December 12th, 2007

Trollsons.jpg

Wow, that is one harsh graphic. I’ve certainly thought the Olsens were too skinny, or God-forbid looked a little trashy on occasion, but I’d never come up with something like that. But PETA did. The Olsen twins have felt the full force of PETA’s wrath over their decision to wear fur, with a new online campaign which features a creepy spoof dress-up game nicknaming them ‘Hairy-Kate’ and ‘Trashley’ Olsen. ‘Dress up the Trollsens’ asks users to dress the girls with ‘fatal fashion’ items including dead dogs, bleeding fur coats, choked chinchilla caps and murdered mink miniskirts. Unnecessary and harsh it may be, but no doubt it will help secure PETA even more publicity. Furthermore, a video parody of a Full House episode is also available to watch – but beware of graphic scenes of animal cruelty.

Why are sunglasses so expensive?

By Andrea Thatcher on December 3rd, 2007

Bulgari%20sunglasses.jpg

Nonprescription sunglasses sales totalled $2.12 billion last year with 112 million pairs sold, but they’re largely a very small, very plastic accessory. While the vast majority of sunglasses sold cost less than $30, the remaining 11 million pairs make up more than half of the business. I doubt anyone’s surprised, having seen price tags like the one on the Bulgari pair at left which retail for $650. But what’s the deal?

7th on Sale Gala brings out celebrities like the Olsen twins, Kate Bosworth and Kate Moss

By Andrea Thatcher on November 16th, 2007

The girls over at sister-site Catwalk Queen have been busy choosing their favorite dresses from last night’s 7th on Sale gala, and we’re ready to do the same. The three day sample sale was kicked off in glamorous style with Elle Macpherson, Valentino Garavani, Iman, and Kate Moss on the red carpet. It was classic black for these fashion big names, no toying with colours. Elle wore a simple strapless black dress, with pleated detail on the hip, while Iman’s dress featured tiers of ruffles, with metallic silver accents and a sheer top. Valentino and Kate prefered sleek black blazers, well Valentino is actually wearing a three-piece suit.

The excitement surrounding their first collection ‘The Row’ has barely even settled and yet the hardest working twins in Tinsel town, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, are busy unveiling their latest fashion line ‘Elizabeth and James’ .

The tiny siblings officially unveiled their newest range in L.A. before heading to Neiman Marcus in New York this week. “It was amazing, because it’s something we worked so hard on, and for the first time, we actually got to see a response,” Ashley told USA Today.
