We heart these great items from QVC which embody everything about Marylin’s style, from diamond cocktail rings to beaded necklaces to wrist watches. And what’s more they also give a nod to the vintage look, which of course is hot right now.

Michelle Williams involved in choosing My Week With Marylin costumes

By Andrea Petrou on November 22nd, 2011

Michelle Williams was involved in choosing the look of her character Marilyn Monroe for new movie ‘My Week With Marilyn’.

The actress plays the troubled started in the new movie and costume designer Jill Taylor reveled she was impressed with Michelle’s opinion on what she should wear.

She told Vogue.co.uk: “Michelle has this real vulnerable quality to her – she’s like a little girl. She’s almost fawn-like, a real Bambi. I think that’s something she brings to each film she does, but it was especially helpful in ‘My Week With Marilyn’ because it meant she really understood and captured the essence of the Marilyn we were trying to convey. You work with so many people in film who give you nothing, but that just wasn’t the case with Michelle. I’d be round hers late at night to do fittings and she always had an opinion on the costumes.”

Jill also revealed she used fashion to represent the “private” of the tragic actress in the film and discovered that Marilyn was ahead of her time when it came to fashion.

She said: “What we wanted to represent was the private side of her. She’s known for her show-stopping glamorous gowns, but after studying hundreds of books and photographs we found out that actually Marilyn dressed for comfort. She was ahead of her time in terms of style. The Fifties look was very much based on structuring and tailoring, but she was often chose quite American sporty clothes to wear. She was the Calvin Klein girl before there even was Calvin Klein. In private, she kept to very simple lines and silhouettes.”

Lindsay Lohan’s nude Playboy shoot was inspired by Marilyn Monroe

By Andrea Petrou on November 8th, 2011

Lindsay Lohan’s nude Playboy shoot was inspired by Marilyn Monroe.

The troubled actress – who was released from jail yesterday after serving just four-and-a half hours of a 30-day sentence – has posed naked for the iconic men’s magazine and its founder Hugh Hefner says it pays homage to her idol – who died in August 1962 aged 36 from a suspected drugs overdose.

He told ‘The Insider’: “It’s a classic tribute inspired by the original Tom Kelly nude pictorial of Marilyn Monroe, a portion of which was the original playmate in the very first issue of Playboy.”

Hugh also confirmed Lindsay, 25, bared all for the shoot but it was done in a “classy” way.

He said: “Oh, yes, she’s naked. And classy, very classy.”

The ‘Mean Girls’ star was paid almost $1 million to strip off for the publication, but she is due to re-shoot some photos later this week.

Lindsay was initially offered $750,000 by Playboy, but turned it down until she was given a higher price.

Previous stars who have posed for the magazine include Pamela Anderson, La Toya Jackson and Drew Barrymore.

Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress from ‘The Seven Year Itch’ has fetched $4.6 million at auction

By Andrea Petrou on June 21st, 2011

Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress from ‘The Seven Year Itch’ has fetched $4.6 million at auction.

The white dress – which the late actress wore during a scene where a gust of wind from the subway blows through a grate in the pavement, puffing up her dress and exposing her underwear – vastly exceeded expectations as it was sold along with a host of other memorabilia belonging to actress and collector Debbie Reynolds this weekend.

The dress had been designed by William Travilla and was made from rayon-acetate to give it sharp pleats.

Describing it, he once said: “I wondered what could I do with this most beautiful girl that Marilyn was to play to make her look clean, talcum-powdered, and adorable.”

At the opening of the auction Debbie had joked to the room of bidders, “I’ve been collecting for 45 years and I’m only 40,” although by the time the lots had closed she was left in tears.

Debbie had acquired the dress in 1971 when she bought all of Marilyn’s wardrobe from studio 20th Century Fox. She had held onto the memorabilia of the late star for as long as possible, but upkeep of the items had driven her into debt and she had failed to find a museum which would look after the whole collection.

Among other items to be auctioned were racing clothes worn by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1944 film ‘National Velvet’, which went for $60,000, her headdress from ‘Cleopatra’ and a dress and a pair of ruby slippers worn in a screen test for ‘The Wizard of Oz’ by Judy Garland, which sold together for $1.75m. Charlie Chaplin’s bowler hat, as worn in ‘The Little Tramp’ fetched $135,000.

The identities of the buyers are largely unknown, but several are said to have been based in Saudi Arabia and Japan.

Audrey Hepburn’s ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ hairstyle named most influential style ever we have a look at the top five

By Andrea Petrou on May 24th, 2011

Audrey Hepburn’s ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ hairstyle has been named most influential style ever.

The late actresses’ French pleat in the 1961 film – in which she played lead character Holly Golightly – has been given the honour after hairdressers voted it top of their list in a Hairdressing Council poll, revealing it is the most requested style in salons.

Other vintage cuts in the list included ‘Some Like It Hot’ actress Marilyn Monroe’s trademark blonde curls, which were second, and model Twiggy’s crop in third.

Jennifer Aniston made the top 10 for her ‘Friends’ character Rachel Green’s hairstyle aptly named ‘The Rachel’, while Victoria Beckham’s bob cut was also among the frontrunners.

Audrey’s accolade comes after she was voted the most beautiful woman of all time in a poll held by TV channel QVC last year.

Once again she saw off competition from Marilyn, who was third, and Jennifer, who came 10th in the survey.

Modern stars such as Cheryl Cole, who was second, Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson were also outdone by the ‘My Fair Lady’ star.

See  the gallery below for the top five.

Marylin Monroe tops “best blonde” list. We give you a gallery of the top 20

By Andrea Petrou on August 27th, 2010

Many of us have dyed our hair blonde at some point in our lives in a bid to adhere to the famous saying “blonde’s have more fun.”

Some of us have had some bad experiences (my hair once went a very unfetching shade of ginger) while others have been lucky enough to shine.

And there are celebrities that seem to have been blessed with the latter, making it onto a list of all time best blondes.

Unsurprisingly Marilyn Monroe was named as the greatest blonde of all time beating off competition from Cameron Diaz and Scarlett Johansson.

She pipped other fair-haired women to take top slot judged be a poll of 3,000 people.

Actress Grace Kelly came second while Brigitte Bardot was third and Cameron Diaz was the highest placed modern day star, making it into fourth.

Other women named in ‘Greatest Blondes of All Time’ list were Holly Willoughby (5th), Madonna (11th), Tess Daly (18th) and Paris Hilton (20th). We’ve put together a gallery of some who made it onto the list.
