Beyonce Knowles is not nervous about being a mother

By Andrea Petrou on October 18th, 2011

Beyonce Knowles is not nervous about being a mother.

The 30-year-old singer is expecting her first baby with husband Jay-Z – who she married in April 2008 – and feels “blessed” that everything in her personal life is going well.

In an interview with new! magazine, she said: “It’s going really well, I am so happy with everything right now.

“I am not nervous because I know it’s happening at the right time. I felt I got married at the right time for me, and now we are having the baby at the right time. I feel like we didn’t rush anything, and now we are being blessed with everything naturally.”

Beyonce has also praised Jay-Z – whose real name is Shawn Carter – describing him as her “best friend” and says she can always rely on him for support in every part of her life.

She said: “He is my best friend, and I am so blessed to have him as my husband. We have been together since I was 20, and he is my rock during everything.”

As Jessica Alba becomes a mum for the second time, we look at her effortless maternity style

Earlier today we reported that one of our favourite celebrity mummas, Jessica Alba, had finally given birth to her second daughter – congrats to her etc etc – and in tribute to one of our most beautiful and stylish heroes, we’re taking a look over her mum-to-be style over the past few months.

Jessica has taken on the challenge of fashionably dressing a bump with determination, and we think she totally succeeded. Pregnant ladies, take note of how the actress teamed floaty, comfortable maxi dresses with costume jewellery and hippy-inspired hair for a beautifully effortless look. We particularly loved her outfit at the 2011 Costume Institute Benefit Gala (a place where we can imagine baby bumps aren’t exactly en vogue), where she teamed a gorgeous floor-skimming silver chiffon gown with romantic, soft hair for a look that was pure Midsummer Night’s Dream.

We’ve put together a gallery of Jessica’s best maternity outfits, which you can see above. The best dressed mum in Hollywood? Oh, we think so.

Natalie Portman has a baby boy

By Andrea Petrou on June 15th, 2011

Natalie Portman has become a mother for the first time.

The Oscar-winning actress – who is engaged to choreographer Benjamin Millepied – gave birth to a baby boy, although no further details have been released.

The couple met on the set of ‘Black Swan’ and while they were thrilled at the news Natalie was expecting, she recently revealed they refused to buy any baby stuff until the tot arrived because of her Jewish upbringing.

She said: “I think it’s a Jewish thing to be kind of superstitious. You don’t do any of the baby stuff before the baby arrives.”

However, one thing Natalie did do during her pregnancy was give up veganism.

The 30-year-old star became vegetarian when she was eight, and further eliminated all animal products from her diet in 2009, but re-introduced dairy to her diet since falling pregnant.

She said: “I actually went back to being vegetarian when I became pregnant, just because I felt like I wanted that stuff.

“I was listening to my body to have eggs and dairy and that sort of stuff. I know there are people who do stay vegan, but I think you have to just be careful, watch your iron levels and your B12 levels and supplement those if there are things you might be low in your diet.”

Throughout her pregnancy Natalie paid tribute to her parents Avner and Shelley Hershlag, saying she hoped to look after her child in the same way that she was brought up.

She said: “If I am a shadow as good a parent, an echo, then I will be the best in the world, so thank you.”

Natalie Portman feels like “a clown” in bold lipstick

By Andrea Petrou on March 10th, 2011

Natalie Portman feels like “a clown” in bold lipstick.

The ‘Black Swan’ actress – who is pregnant with her first child – is slowly agreeing to make-up artists’ requests for her to wear a more dramatic colour on her mouth, but still doesn’t feel entirely comfortable.

She said: “I feel like a clown if I put on strong lipstick, but recently I’ve experimented with reds. Make-up artists have been urging me to try stronger lips, but it still doesn’t feel like me. I’m working on it.”

The brunette beauty also relies on help doing her hair as she claims she doesn’t know how to stop it looking like a “triangle”.

She said: “When you see me, a professional has done my hair – I don’t know how to. As a family, we have very curly ‘Jewish’ hair, when it’s long, it comes out in a triangle.”

Natalie also revealed she developed an interest in perfume from her mother and believes it is important to include scent when “dressing up”.

The Oscar-winning beauty added to Britain’s InStyle magazine: “My mum taught me to spray fragrance and walk into it. She has a sensitive sense of smell, so I’ve grown up with a great awareness.

“A scent that sets you apart makes you feel glamorous and elegant and gives you a different way of walking into a room – it’s part of dressing up.”

Shiny Style loves: Lily Allen’s “chic mummy” maternity style

By Andrea Petrou on September 22nd, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

London-girl Lily Allen has been a familiar face on the front row of pretty much all the London Fashion Week shows showing off her beautifully shiny dark bob and her new baby bump. Far from shying away from the fashion week events that would be inevitably be filled with supermodels and every size 6 in the country, she stepped out in some sharp maternity fashion and looked prettier than anyone else anyway.

Despite the bump she’s managed to maintain her classic, Lily Allen sixties style of smoky eye-makeup sweet little smock dresses, tailored coats and very opaque black tights to make her as leggy as possible.

In the past I’ve always thought that when I was pregnant all sense of style would go out of the window, and that I’d just wear literally whatever would fit over my stomach, be it a lycra tube top or a burlap sack. But Lily’s inspired me. Why should we start dressing like we got dressed in the dark just because we’re the size of a house? If you’re pregnant and looking for a bit of Lily’s London-girl style in your maternity wardrobe, check the gallery below for some of her best outfits since the appearance of her bump, and some of our favourite maternity pieces on the high-street.

Trend Alert: Top five maternity must-haves

By Shiny writer on August 5th, 2010

With the news that Lily Allen is pregnant we’ve decided to dedicate a few of today’s posts to the lovely lady and of course the subject of preganancy.

So it was an obvious choice to choose maternity wear for our daily trend alert post.

Over the past few years maternity wear has blossomed. It’s no longer all about baggy pants (think Pheobe from Friends), your other halves trackie bottoms and old tees or elasticated waistbands.

In fact, maternity clothing has become so popluar that highstreet store Topshop has opened up an arm dedicated to this fashion, and Asos has a special section on its site for this. Add to that speciality stores such as Mamas and Papas and pregant ladies have a great choice of clothing to chose from.

The growth of this style could be put down to the celebrity culture, where yummy mummies to-be are embracing their bumps and showing them off in on-trend outfits.

Here’s our top five.

Gwen Stefani loves Isabella Oliver

Trust me, trying to be fashionable while you’re pregnant is like trying to give a cat a bath — it most likely ain’t going to happen.

And, yes, while there are more fashionable maternity clothes out there than in years past, I’ve found it hard to find a good fit as well as an outfit that looks cute on the hanger.

Most days I just end up opening my closet and looking longingly at my pre-pregnancy jeans — kind of makes that old statement “a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear” actually true.

Another maternity-wear maven? Jessica Alba pregnant

By Andrea Thatcher on December 12th, 2007

Jessica%20Alba%20awake.jpg

Could the announcement today that Jessica Alba is pregnant be the reason for her more covered up, less slinky style at last month’s Awake premiere? We love the short black dress with scalloped edges and lace detailing, but it definitely is less sexy than the star usually goes for red carpet events. And the gathered detail at the waist would help conceal a tiny baby bump. It will be really interesting to see how Alba handles her pregnancy, fashion wise, during the upcoming awards season. She is having the baby with boyfriend Cash Warren and is due in late spring or early summer.
